23 Maryland Parks and Playgrounds Receive Funding

Department of Natural Resources Now Accepting Grant Applications for Next Year

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is now accepting grant applications from cities and towns looking to rehabilitate or enhance local parks and playgrounds in their communities. Funding from the Community Parks and Playground Program can be utilized to restore existing areas and features or to develop and expand new green spaces. Applications for Fiscal Year 2018 funding are due on Aug. 17.

“Creating and improving public access to parks and play areas, especially those in more densely-populated areas, is a top priority for the department and state,” Land Acquisition and Planning Director Emily Wilson said. “That is why we continue to work to expand opportunities for our citizens and children to experience the great outdoors and all that nature has to offer. The program provides a recreational oasis in an otherwise urbanized setting. We encourage municipalities to take advantage of this grant opportunity.”

The department recently awarded 23 grants in Fiscal Year 2017 – totaling $2.5 million – to communities throughout Maryland, from Baltimore City to Trappe. Each grant was evaluated by the department and included in Governor Larry Hogan’s capital budget. Every project will be presented to the Board of Public Works for final approval.

More minority on minority crimes. But they don't look at it as criminal, only business as usual.

This is a bunch of baloney. The parks department is blowing through huge sums of money going to what were formerly nature areas and covering them with oversized parking lots, extensive lighting and other projects that take the nature out of our parks. This is just more wasteful spending. Where the new library just went into Crisfield (5 times bigger than it needs to be) there is a dock, trail, gazebo and a playground about 1/4 the size of the one I grew up with at Showell Elementry. IT HAS BEEN IN CONSTRUCTION FOR OVER 4 YEARS NOW!!! Judging by the pace at which they move from one phase to another it should be finished around the time that Crisfield finally sinks into the Chesapeake Bay.

As a resident of Wicomico county and a taxpayer I was totally disgusted by what I witnessed today in one of the county sports parks.I was walking my dog in the early afternoon in the park on Naylor Mill road were the ball games are held.I heard slam bang bang and here comes a newer ford utility truck wirh a bobcat style loader on a trailer .Driver is moving excessively fast and has a cigarette in tow as he comes to a stop. As he proceeds to unload the machine from the trailer the trailer ramps were not horizontal to the ground so what does he do. HE DRAGS THE TRAILER WITH THE RAMPS DOWN 70 FEET UNTIL THEY BREAK EVEN PLANE WITH THE GROUND.I do not know were the county gets these incompetent employees but it sure does not make me feel good when I read on here they are getting a 3% salary increase and treating taxpayer equipment in such a manner.
