Ohio Police K-9 to be auctioned off despite handler’s request to keep him

Officer Matthew Hickey retired on Monday after serving 30 years in law enforcement, NBC affiliate WTAP-TV reports. He wanted to Ajax to retire with him, but the city told him that wouldn’t be possible.

News quickly spread in the small community, and they started a GoFundMe account which raised $3,500 – the amount Officer Hickey was told Ajax was worth.

This story seems incredibly hard hearted and sad. If this man was great to this dog and the dog grew up in this family it seems cruel to separate the dog from his family. Dogs have incredible hearts and attach to their loved ones. In the end we will be judged by how we treated animals.

Is it always about money?????

Couldn't believe the town would do
something like this!!! They're Nuts
to think such a thing after this man
had the dog as his partner for 4 yrs.!!
He is a part of that mans' family!
Shame, shame on them for stating
such a thing!!

A K9 is a police tool! Not a partner, member of the family or a cop for the matter! The difference in the dog and a baton!and here in Wicomico the tool is a drug sniffer! Not a search and arttack dog. One that may save its handlers life! A tool to generate money!

So a retired police officer on a publicly-funded pension can't afford a dog? Why doesn't he buy the dog, himself? Why does the public have to support the retirement of a canine with four years of service?

I'm not trying to be cruel or heartless but we talk all of the time about wasted government spending and this is a perfect example of a government employee wanting special treatment at the expense of the public.

Would you pay $3500 for a dog?
