Announcement from Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Fredericksen:

Several field trips to metro areas have been cancelled or postponed this week due to Wicomico Schools learning of threats to several major cities in our area in the aftermath of the Paris attacks. We’re sorry for the scheduling problems that this last-minute change creates, but feel we must act out of an abundance of caution when we get information that our students might be exposed to increased danger. The safety of students, staff, and chaperones outweighs any inconvenience from postponing or cancelling a field trip.

As a safety precaution, we have cancelled trips for Tuesday and Wednesday to get better information regarding student safety (much as we did last spring with the Freddie Gray aftermath in Baltimore). We will be seeking rescheduling, refunds, and other learning activities that are aligned with the curriculum and of similar stature. The trips affected so far are for Fruitland Intermediate School, Fruitland Primary School, and North Salisbury Elementary. For now we’re holding back on a decision on Thursday and Friday trips – and beyond – to get more information. Thank you for your understanding and your patience with this change in plans.

Smart move. Now give that money back to the tax payers.

412 It is quite obvious that you don't have children in the local public schools.
Let me enlighten you on who pays for field trips.
PTA does...
Parents do...
Some bus companies often donate their time and business often give discounts for schools.

There is a rare trip that is funded by grants, which is taxpayers, but the buses (if not donated)are still paid for by the parents and PTA. These would be the Assateague Island every 1 rst grader gets in the county, and things like this. Not to worry, I am certain your part is very small, if any at all.

Now, I would love to hear from parents from these schools to see how much they will be refunded, just to see you eat your words.

Awwwww, those muslims are just like us.....
Lets all get together and sing.
Just don't send my kids anywhere the muslims might blow them up. Not Christians. Not Chinese. Not Buddhists. MUSLIMS. Read that again.
And these ninnie sissy braindead liberals don't see the irony of their position.
THEIR line of thinking is "as long as its YOUR life at risk, we would let SATAN get a visa.
But when it's OUR life, well, uh, ummmmmm, "can we exercise a little caution?".
I wonder if they'd go into a D.C. museum if they saw a busload of muslim men, age 18-35, going in just before them?
That's what I thought.
Dumb ace liberals. Always willing to let you die for THEIR ideals.
Keep cheering.

Dr. Freddy may be an idiot in the eyes of many but I have to give him and the BOE credit on this one. Good call. There are plenty of places around here that our kids could go and get an educational field trip.

so if they brought in refuges to one of these other places around here it would be ok for our children to go there

You couldn't be any further from the truth. Not only do I have a child in the school system I have a very high ranking position.

If you think the PTA pays for school trips to Baltimore, Washington, etc. you are an IDIOT!

The County tax payers have to pay for fuel, hourly pay, insurance, tolls, etc. I am also am member of the PTA and I know we don't raise money for field trips.

By the way if you are a product of the Wicomico County Public Schools you are an embarrassment. Your grammar is atrocious.

At least 31 Governors in the country have demanded no Syrian Refugees and that is at the will of the people. They listened to us and they know their job is to protect us. 31 out of 50 states? What do you say about that. And now Obama's administration is saying we can't stop refugees. What is that telling you? It says Obama is going to bring them regardless to what we say and he is setting himself up for a damn Civil War. The man is crazy and he has a few nutcase Democrats supporting him.

The Maryland Democrats are using this opportunity to attack our Republican Governor. If O'Malley had done this they would be loving and praising every move. Democrats are nothing but fence swings and go with the wind direction. Stupid Kool Aid drinkers.

Now can Frederickson address the terror threat in one of the county high schools? Why are we hearing it from our children and not the principal or the board?
