New Berlin Apartment Complex Gains Site Plan Approval; Seahawk Road Widening Part Of Developer’s Plan

BERLIN – With site plan approval from the Berlin Planning Commission last week, developers of the apartment complex proposed for Seahawk Road say construction could begin as soon as the spring.

Blair Rinnier of Rinnier Development said that though the project — known as Oceans East — still needed approval from the State Highway Administration and the Maryland Department of the Environment, he hoped construction would begin in early spring. Members of the Berlin Planning Commission gave the project their approval — contingent on the town council’s support of a related text amendment — last Wednesday. They were optimistic that the widening of Seahawk Road that would come with the project would benefit the community.

“I think the roadway is going to be a huge help to the school system,” commission member John Barrett said.

Rinnier, who has been looking toward development of the Seahawk Road site for years, plans to build a 700-plus unit apartment community across from Stephen Decatur Middle School. This month’s approval from the planning commission is for the roughly 150-unit first phase of the project. The initial phase will include construction of a community clubhouse, pool, pond, park and garages in addition to the apartments.

One needs only to look at Virginia Beach to see where this is all headed.

Virginia Beach used to be a great place, but they let development run wild, and soon they were stacked 3 and 4 high along every ditch and creek in the area.

I loved it when I lived there in the late 70's, but I can't stand the place now. It's a slum with a beach.

Yes well there were only two council members (Gulyas & Hall) who had the balls to vote against this.

There already seems to be enough of these units just about everywhere. Where are the people going to come from to rent them and where will they find work. Maybe these are designed for retirees. I think we have enough of these units everywhere including Salisbury which seems to have thousands of them and more under construction.

Taxpayers, you know, the ones trying to pay their own mortgages and rents, are going to be forced (again) to start helping OTHER people to pay theirs, too.
Is that white privilege?

Another project like the one at the intersection of Beaglin Park Drive and Old Ocean City Road: another Rinnier Property. The Rinnier family much like Gillis Gilkerson have one motive in mind: MONEY! They don't care about anything but MONEY! This area is flooded with apartments that remain vacant. The prices that Rinnier will charge will be in the $1200.00 to $1500.00 a month price range. None of these developers wants to build affordable housing.

What good is building more so-called "affordable housing" when the first ones that get to move in and fill it up, are Section 8 and housing assistance takers, who don't have to worry about whether they can afford the rent?

There needs to be "affordable housing" built for working people.
