A Letter To The Editor: Fox News Debate

I want to make a comment that's sure to stir the proverbial sh**.

I am a long time fan of Fox news - that is until last night.

To me, fair and balanced means exactly that. But I saw a side of Fox News last night on the debate that opened my eyes. The most significant thing about it is that I almost fell for it. After the debate I went to bed changing my mind from one who supported Trump to one who was disappointed in his performance. I had converted to a position that maybe Trump wasn't educated enough on the issues to be POTUS. But as I laid in bed considering the debate there were things that didn't rest well with me that I couldn't put my finger on. I woke up at 4:00 am like I always do and made coffee to start the day. As the cobwebs cleared, my thoughts drifted back to last nights debate and again the things that troubled me as I was drifting to sleep last night resurfaced.

As I compared the questions in my mind that were posed to Trump and compared them to those posed to other candidates it hit me! It was the way the debate was structured from the beginning that bothered me. The underlying effort of this debate was designed to discredit Trump in order to eliminate him early as a viable candidate.

From the very first question fox news decided to exploit an honorable trait (telling it like he sees it) in order the put him on the wrong side of the voters. And for many it was successful. It may be that Trump is unpolished as it relates to debates but he is a quick study and you never have to wonder where he stands on an issue. In my opinion fox news has exposed itself as a Republican Party hack. They can talk about the liberal main stream media all they want but the way they picked, chose, and created questions geared toward insulting and discrediting Trump and literally singling him out for ridicule in a public forum clearly shows that they are pro Republican Party- not neutral. Certainly not fair and balanced.

In my opinion, after looking past the actual questions and answers it became painfully obvious that the media - to include fox news, are puppets to political parties via party supporters who advertise with them or have powerful positions with in their corporate structure. Fair and balanced? No. But now that I've opened my eyes I can see the transparency as plain as day. We need someone like Trump to negotiate our way back to a respected global superpower. I don't think there is anyway to bring us back from the debt created by Obama but if there is a way, Trump will find it.

gave up all cable TV 5 years ago - we can all live without Fox News - just like politicians, network news outlets are only out for themselves

i saw that from the beginning they were attacks on Trump +1

Spot on, his questions were loaded and did not give him any chance to tell the public his policy positions. This was a pure hatchet job done by the media industry. They are afraid of a president who can not be controlled.

Mr. Trump's response to the first question shows one of two things...:

He's either a "my-way or the highway" kind of guy - not a team player....

Or,

He has such a low opinion of the rest of the candidates that he is the only one that could take this country out of the socialist pit the professional politicians have put us in.

I'm fairly certain the first one is right - and based on what I have seen about career politicians, the second one is correct also.

Sooooo, unless the republican establishment can coalesce around a single alternative candidate that everyone backs - he will split the vote...and the socialists will finish this country off!

Ross Perot did the exact same thing when the first President Bush ran for reelection...a rabble-rousing businessman whose intent was to prevent President Bush from getting reelected. The results of that are still haunting us to this day!

I believe that you are correct!

Carson sounded like an infomercial for his books. Guess we know why he is running.

I felt exactly the same way. It was like a set up to attack Trump with the Stupid questions Megan and the two others. Even Ben Carson when asked a question mentioned that he was glad they did not forget about
him. Have always enjoyed watching Megan until last night .......she even had Debbie Wasserman Schultz (whatever her liberal name is?????) after the debate come on and "blabber on" about nothing!

Megyn Kelly embarrassed herself and Fox right out of the box with her rudeness and obvious vitriol toward Trump.
She obviously thinks of herself as pretty hot stuff, but showed her lack of character. Zero class. Zero. She's all about Megyn.
At least Brett Baier has some humility about him in his questioning, but, like this poster has stated, the whole debate questioning structure was a setup designed to sift the candidates the way Fox wanted them to look.

I don't particularly care for Trump, but Fox's attempt to skewer him on stage will backfire on them. It looks like it already has.

I have to firmly agree with this message.

I could not believe how they ignored Ben Carson like they did.

I also couldn't believe how they dug very deep into the candidates past and used it against them.

One of the things I enjoyed was when the candidates complimented each other and discussed unity.

I think Rubio won the debate hands down. However, to this date I still support Trump and let me explain why.

Do I believe Trump will be our next President, no. What I do believe, (similar to my own run for Mayor) is that Trump will open the minds of Americans and challenge right from wrong.

I also firmly believe SOME of the candidates last night were fed their questions in advance and some were not. In fact, at one point after the debate Fox News mentioned some of the candidates has scripted answers, hmmmm.

Finally, the debate last night was disgraceful based on the moderators actually attacking each and every candidate. HOW was this in the American peoples favor, rather then questions looking for solutions to the current leadership and or liberal candidates.

We want to know what the hopefuls platforms are, NOT what Fox News wants. I'll say more later.

Well first, Fox is barely a news network. Second, if you think they structure a debate to be fair and to not be as profitable as possible, you need to rethink it. Choose who you think is the right person. Fox, and all the other networks, are there for one reason, to sell product. Period, end of sentence.

I figured out right from the start that they were gunning for Donald Trump. Then the fat women question coming from Kelly to Trump set the tone of the debate. It became a circus.
I was appalled that more time wasn't given to Ben Carson.

NOBODY could possibly be as unknowledgeable as Obama was in 2008. People have forgotten what intelligence sounds like.

Go Donald!

I didn't see it - only tough questions. However, I will say this. If the GOP, conservatives, whatever you want to call yourselves don't collectively get behind a candidate Hillary and the liberals will win again. That is a sure thing. Too many people on entitlements that will vote for them. If those who work remain divided then there won't be enough votes.

We should go for the best but once someones up there it is in our best interest to support them. Holding them accountable once they are in office should be the priority.

I noticed a similar thing during the debates in the last election cycle. The questions and the format was designed to highlight Romney and his positions. Jon Huntsman struck me as someone who was extremely thoughtful and interested in solving problems but we were never able to get to know him through the debates.

You spent way to much time thinking about it. Stopped watching debates 8 years ago. It's all manufactured propaganda machine. I'm voting Trump. Don't care what anyone has to stay. Trust me it will cut stress 80 percent during election process.

I thought they did a good job of asking the tough questions, and not lobbing softballs.

Prior to the debate, I was intrigued by Trump and what he was saying. Now, not so much. Trump had an opportunity to show that there's more substance to him, than just his popular catch-phrase lines.

Unfortunately, he missed the opportunity. Maybe he'll redeem himself in the next debate.

sounds like hillary is going to win.... God protect us!!

It took you that long to figure out that these "news stations" are run by respective political parties?

Trump will not win the presidency. He's not a team player in any regard. Go along to get along Rino's are ticking all of us off and that's no secret.
We need someone that Can work will both sides of the isle to make America work again. Someone like Reagan. President Reagan was able to knit races and classes together. If the congress wouldn't work with him he would take the issues to the people. It seemed to work and much good came out of the Reagan years.

Trump is too much like Obama; my way or the highway. We don't need this again. Period...

Spot on!! Megan Kelly made a complete and utter ass of herself and fox. If she is on again I will not watch.
Even this morning watching fox news you could see that they ALL knew Kelly screwed up but they were afraid to acknowledge it. They mentioned it briefly then moved on.

Meg is a cute puppet on a string shark. She does what she is told to do. She's a pretender. Very little was spoken on issues good or bad affecting this country.

So you detemined this on one questionable debate, narrow-minded 101.

Hillary is not going to win, if I can help it. That would just be another Liar in Chief and we are in bad enough shape without another dishonest liar in there.

I saw the same thing. Looked like a hit job on Trump from the start. Then the luntz group afterwards piled on. Looked like a setup. Hoping Trump hits back and looks bad. Hope he plays this smart. I'm anfox fan but am disappointed in Megan. Won't watch her anymore.

Megan Kelly was terrible last night, almost as bad as Rachel Mad-Cow from MSNBC. Very combative and aggressive towards Trump, right from the start, which I believe was part of the Fox plan - hammer down on Trump and discredit him from the rest of the candidates. And there us a reason for that, they don't like Trump, he doesn't fit in their scheme of things.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree. It was a very unfair debate.

No one else on the stage had made the claim that they had proof of a Mexican government conspiracy, so no one else had the challenge of proving a falsehood, which he couldn't.

I don't particularly think Hillary has a lot of support. I just think that she is a very recognizable name and a lot of people are too lazy to investigate the other candidates. There are many people who don't watch the news or follow politics and probably couldn't name very many of the candidates of either party. Voters need to get educated!

The only surprising thing about this post is that it took so long for anyone to realize Fox is nothing more than the media arm of the Republican Party. Wake up, sheeple!

Trump for pres and Carson for vp.

Rush Limbaugh said that the big donners got a hold of the Fox News questioners and told them to discredit Trump due to the fact they can't control him. The other candidates they can control due to their donations.

Yes.

Fox News was, is and apparently always will be in the pocket of "certain" Republicans. "Fair and balanced" is a joke.

I don't watch Fox and the behavior of Megan Kelly just confirmed why. She was too snarky and too full of herself. Trump could have done better, too. However, Fox chose to set the tone with their first question. Everyone knew that Trump wouldn't agree to promise not to run as a third party candidate. So what was their point, to make him a target right from the start?

The "fix" was in. Fox News is a sham.

9:38, agreed. If people think these were "tough" questions, God forbid Trump have to answer to the Iranians and ISIS. You all are as big a joke as he is.

They were not tough per se, they were inappropriate in that setting. That was not the place to ask those assinine questions, that's what made them tough.

WTH cares if Trump will run as an independent, or when anyone became a Repub?
Was there anyone from another party on that stage? And boo hoo, women got called some names. That's the issue bimbo wants to bring up to discuss national problems and possible solutions? If he called them all princesses that would be deemed degrading too. Get over it already.

How about focusing on the economy, jobs, police brutality, wars, crime, etc. You know stuff that REALLY matters.

Keep those pigs alive, safe and employed. Then they can go buy some makeup.

The GOP and Fox better wake up if they want a conservative candidate to be our next president. Regardless of what they do to force Trump out he IS going to file as an Independent and that may backfire and F*** up the entire race giving the Presidency back to the Liberal Democrats. This country is circling the drain and the establishment GOP and Fox needs to let the Primaries run it's course.

I will support Trump even and an Independent so the bottom line is 3rd party candidates F*** up elections. Let the people decide who they want as their Republican Nominee for the Primaries.
