A Letter To The Editor: Complaint

Recently read a complaint about a local dentist office in Salisbury. Well I’d like to tell your readers about an office in Berlin. Worcester County Dental Clinic for their County’s low income children and pregnant women under the age of 21.

My friend took her boy there and I went along because the first time he went he had a really bad panic attack. During the visit they wouldn’t let her or I go back with him and I didn’t like that considering what has happen in Delaware with that Pediatric Doctor. I mean children sometime become more afraid around people they don’t know duh…Then I noticed something there was a door I think might have been the mangers office with a sign on it that read “Kids are for people who can’t have Dogs” I even took a picture. WTF is that supposed to mean??? If this person doesn’t like kids then she doesn’t belong to be managing a Clinic for children. Or does this mean she is comparing children to dogs?? I cannot believe Worcester Co. let’s them have that sign on a door.

Besides that problem when they started to work on my friend’s son we could hear him screaming in the lobby. She also didn’t get any kind of consult with the dentist, just this dental assistant with a poor attitude bring him out in tears. Even the person that made his next appointment, who was constantly looking at her cell phone, had a non-caring attitude. When my friend got him home he was numb for about 6 hours. I don’t think that is normal either for fillings. Needless to say she will not be taking him back there. We are worried that he will now have a fear of going to a dentist anywhere. Thanks Worcester Co. good help is truly hard to find as they say.

So don't take him back there. I'm quite sure they won't miss him, you or your friend. BTW, nobody likes going to the dentist.

Anonymous said...

what do you want when you get it for free

Anonymous said...

First of all 6 hours is completely normal post any local anesthesia...

Anonymous said...

Try going to a dentist you have to pay for. I'm sure you'd be treated much better.

First time visits should be made fun for children if it is a pediatric office. I know mine was balloons toys education and a great caring fun staff. Going to the dentist is no ones favorite thing to do true. But people need to take care of their teeth or they might be wearing dentures in the future. On another note there are a few county employee's who just feel entitled to their jobs and don't care how they treat the public.

I have had a lot of dental work done in my life and never been numb that long. Dam!

Why are YOU writing this letter? You don't have a damn dog in the fight. You would not be allowed back there in any other situation. If there is a complaint it needs to come from the mom and to someone who cares.

To 9:23...I hope you don't have a child..it sounds like you should get a DOG! This office has no compassion and to work in this field, you must have compassion. Having a sign like that is totally obserd! My dental office does not allow parents in the treatment room either, however you may walk your child back. The reason being is infection control and the privacy of the other patient's receving treatment. The assistant explains everything to me prior to the visit and gives me and my child verbal instructions when done. If a child is not cooperative nothing should be forced on them. when my child was a younger I did take her to strictly a pediatric dentist because of the child - like atmosphere. Dental treatment forced can be very taumatic if if not approched with care and understanding ...that trauma will carry over to adulthood. By the way it sounds, I am sure you are someone who truly doesn't give a rats ass about their dental care.

I have many filling and I can say I'm numb for a good 4 hours afterwards. How I know is I always schedule my visits for 1pm right after the office reopens after lunch and I make sure I eat before appointment. I'm still sometimes a bit numb by the time dinner rolls around which is around 5 or 6 for us. 6 hrs for a child wouldn't be anything to me to worry about because the last thing anyone would want would be for it to hurt the child.

It is absouletly not normal to be numb that long. The dentist would of had to use more than the recommended dose for their age. also, I can certainly tell you that all front staff should have complete knowledge of dentistry. Not just a paper pusher. A responsible Dentist would send his staff to seminars and continuing education. I you have a bad attiude about that, then you shouldn't be employed in that postion. There is nothing better when you can call an office and ask a question about a procedue and actually get an answer that is ligit because of their knowledge.

Simply put, if you did not like the experience don't go back. If you have limited options because Uncle Sam is paying your way then get off Uncle Sams back and provide for yourself. Dental insurance is one of the cheapest insurances around and anyone can get it.

The reason for so many negative comments is because we work hard to provide for ourselves and our families and we are sick of people complaining about what they don't pay for.

Anonymous said...

To 10:14....How dare you make a comment like that. I myself do not have chidren of my own because I cannot! and will accompany best friend to some of her childrens appointments because I CARE FOR THERE WELL BEING AS IF THEY WERE MY OWN! We are very close and for you to respond to whoever made this post sounds like trailer park trash who probably has kids that we are paying for! So suck it.

Anonymous said...

TLC is not much better but at least the dentist or the assistant comes out to explain what needs to be done or has been done. It is said for us people who don't have that extra money to go to a better dentist 9:57 you don't get it.

Anonymous said...

It is NOT normal for any child to be numb that long...only and adult. And four hours if it is a lower block, and two hours if it is an upper tooth.

Anonymous said...

This is the shore. There is no professionalism here. And just read the comments. These are the same type of folks you are complaining about. No diamonds here, just coal.

Let me guess... You're an expert in this field. NOT!! I noticed you didn't sign your name. Don't worry I will sign it for you.

We were not allowed to have signs up like that in out offices when I worked for Wicomico Co. That is disrespectful to parents and patients.

Don't ever let a doctor or nurse be alone with your child. When I was little (I'm female and this was in the 70's) my dentist was sexually abusing boys in the dental chair while the parents were out in the waiting room. I always hated going to him because he was really mean. We found out years later what was going on when the boys started coming forward. Don't let your kids out of your sight.

Another know it all who doesn't know jack sh!t.

"It is absouletly not normal to be numb that long"

Not true 10:23. It depends on several factors including the person. It wears off in some faster than in others. The amount of carpules used wouldn't necessarily make a difference in how long numbing lasts either because they would have been administered at around the same time and would wear off at around the same time, not extended the amount of time.

10:46 if you don't like it here then take your diamond ass and leave PLEASE!

Anonymous said...

TROLL....LOL I didn't sign my name because we do see each other within the field. But since you threw yours out there discuss it at the next continuing education course.

Just looked up Dr. Troll on Healthgrades....sorry my friend ...your ratings suck.

so what I went to food lion and they actually expected me to pay for my food. damn what's up with that?
Guess delmarva power is going to expect the same!
you get what you pay for and in your case that's what you are not paying for. IT's FREE!

Anonymous said...

The whole point of this complaint was how we were all treated in that office. This boy could be terrified for a long time now. Kids get cavities sometimes I get that and they have to be filled. But I am sincerely just letting others know what they might expect when going to that office. I did use to work in the field and I don't give a dam what you say he shouldn't have been numb for that long, period for a small filling. Yes its free and you certainly do get what you pay for but some people have no other choice. Respect and knowledge from staff goes a long way so true.

Anonymous said...

To those of you saying you get what you pay for......this office is using your tax dollars to help children. I would expect you all to be outraged over this patients treatment. If you are going to do a job do it right! People in all areas including retail need to figure out that they are there to work. Not chit chat with a coworker about their life while the customer/patient waits for them.

Anonymous said...

It shouldn't matter how the child's parents are paying for it, children should be treated with kindness and compassion. I have private insurance and I've seen "nurses" (probably CNAs) jerk my kids' around and yell "IT DON'T HURT" at them when they cried during shots (at age 3). These trolls weren't qualified to empty bed pans and you bet I complained.

Anonymous said...

To 11:31.....Great choice of words for someone who just gave up that they work there !!!! Real professional. You just made that office look worse! LOL

Anonymous said...

Excuse me I never said I worked there I worked in a Wicomico County office a long time ago.
No personal signs allowed at that time.

12:41 PM I am pretty sure they meant the shore Dunce-ski.

What part of FREE don't you you understand. If you have time to get on this internet and complain about nothing then you have time to get a job. By the way how can you afford a computer and the internet?

How do we know the patient was treated badly? Remember there are 3 sides to a story, your side, his side and the truth. Get a grip you freeloader.

Anonymous said...

This office just doesn't see non paying freeloaders..they do take regular insurance as well so don't assume that the person who posted this was getting services for free.

12:20 Ever think I might be retired idiot...

she said this dentist office was for low income and pregnant women under 21, so we all know what she's talking about. total bs, if you don't like the free service then your friend could always get a job and upgrade to a better dentist! that's amerika. Now stfu and quit your crying!

Cool smiles in fruitland is a nightmare. Unsanitary as hell! Very unprofessional and forceful to children. They used an adult wedge on a child because they ran out. Damn near broke the kids jaw. Its sad the poor can't receive good health care. Especially children where a healthy smile can make or break their livelihood and self esteem.

I go to that office...i receive state assistance because my child is handicapped. I am a single mother with a full time job and pay for my Obama care. Her dead beat father doesn't help. I am educated also have attended classes at work wic. I am not a loser but if u are single it is hard to make ends meet. I am grateful for this post because I do care about my daughter. So before all of u jump on the band wagon about sucking off the state...get the facts!

I have taken my kids to the one in Fruitland (next to Apple, for Medicaid patients)and have always been in hand holding distance of them during treatment. Always top end friendliness and anti- anxiety talk. That "infection" story is the most bogus one I've ever heard! I mean, really, anything floating across the room from me has already floated across the room in my car and in the waiting room to my kid on the way to the appointment, right? And if there is a hygiene problem on the treatment room, well, that's for them to correct.

You need to report this one, and find another provider.

I have a complaint too Joe.Or rather a commentary.Does ANYONE know how to spell and use the proper form of words anymore?? 2/3 of these comments are just horribly misspelled! This why people talk bad about the Eastern Shore, because of the simpletons who cannot master elementary school level grammar and spelling.Stay in school! And don't even get me started on "there, their and they're".

There you go again. Putting others down. Read your own comment.

"This why people talk bad about the Eastern Shore"

Did you forget something?

Anonymous said...

Ever heard of the adverb "badly?" And yes, I'm from the Eastern Shore.

Anonymous said...

I take all of my kids there regularly and never experienced what you described. I've also never been denied access to them during treatment & have never witnessed them refuse anyone access (& my youngest is a screamer!). I had to sign a paper listing what would be done after the doctor talked to me about it all at their cleanings. Sounds like your friend conveniently left out a few details when telling you what else has happened at earlier visits! I am thankful for being able to get dental care close to my home!!

Kool Smiles sucks. Period. The staff members I've encountered were rude. They would not let me go back with my child. I never went back.

Anonymous said...

Wow I did not realize that accepting free care for my children meant;

I should expect to be treated rudely.
My and my child's rights do not matter.
There is the potential that my children could or may be molested.
I should expect poor care/treatment.
And that I should be prepared and except the fact that I will be labeled as lazy scum.

Thank you to all that have so kindly cleared that up for me.

Anonymous said...

ha ha ha , I meant - "ACCEPT" to be labeled as ...

Ok spelling nazi? I caught it before you did.

Anonymous said...

No comparison between Kool Smiles & Worcester! We tried KS first & will NEVER go back!!! Like I said in my earlier post, nothing but good visits in Berlin. Maybe the letter writer was the one having the bad day. And nothing like hiding kids from their fears to teach them how to deal. Heaven forbid he might learn something. That's what's wrong with this country. There's no taking responsibility for actions anymore (like take care of your teeth so you don't need fillings!). Too bad you or your friend didn't talk with the Dr before you left cause now you're just whining!

Anonymous said...

but it's always about the kids! ain't that how libs and demoncrats work? They want us to feel bad since it's always for the kids. How about being an adult and making proper life choices! sounds like just another typical lib loser! I do feel sorry for the kid but not because of what the dentist office may or may not have done. I feel bad fo the kid because they have an idiot for a parent! good lucking breaking out of that mold!

Anonymous said...

Some people just have issues that dental facilities just can't fix.

Anonymous said...

I would not have allowed my child back there alone..period..I would have left and gone to another office. Sorry the kid went through this.

I take my kids to the Worcester County Dental Clinic, and so do a number of my friends with their kids, we have never had an incident close to what is described in this complaint. I must say, I find this post hard to digest. I have taken my children to several facilities in the area before Worcester County, and I must say I always felt like my kids were a number and just pushed through. Worcester County actually takes the time to make my kids get comfortable and I must say it works. I have never heard of a child having a tooth pulled or a filling placed and the kids walk out smiling. My kids do. I felt like a bad parent when two of my children needed extractions, and all four needed fillings, but the staff took the time to explain to me the things we as a family needed to improve on with dental hygiene and eating habits. I went to every appointment and was allowed back to the work rooms each visit. I admit, I get squimish at the site of blood and asked if I could leave during the extractions, but by that point I had seen the staff at work and knew my kids were in good hands. My child did cry a little when the doctor gave him a shot twice for a minute or two, but I never heard anything other than laughter any other time. I cry at the thought of a shot or blood being drawn and I am surprised that my kids can get it in the mouth and tell me they hardly felt it when the appointment was completed. I like many are thankful for this office. My only complaint is that they are not staffed to be open more than two or three days a week, and they do not take adults. We are told that they plan on being back to five days a week soon, but for now my children are scheduled for their six month hygiene appointment 8 months from now.

I find it insulting that some of you associate free care as being sub standard. My kids are pain free and love going to the dentist.
