Is It Not A Conflict Of Interest For The County Executive To Ask For A Raise For His Cousin?

The Wicomico County Executives Office put in a request of support from the Wicomico County Council to support a massive pay raise for the Orphan Court Judges recently.

As we mentioned yesterday, the Council rejected Rick Pollitt's request. However, regardless of whether or not Rick Pollitt moves forward with his own letter of support to the state, wouldn't it be a conflict of interest either way since one of those honorable Judges is his 1st Cousin?

Some have even said this may be an abuse of his power. Would any anonymous local attorney like to chime in on this matter?

I am not an attorney nor do I play one on TV. Things like this happen all the time in places like Baltimore, Chicago, New Jersey, etc. If we want to be a truly progressive county we have to follow the examples of our leaders. Not!

Judge of Orphans Court is a "feel good" legal job. There is no legal training required and the only requirement is that the person be over 21 and a resident of the county. They sign papers handed to them by the Register of Wills, thereby certifying that a will is valid. When someone dies without a will they sign papers certifying that the Register of Wills followed the law in distribution of assets.

You people have no idea what Orphans Court does. They are the ones that settle all the disputes when people argue over wills, people die without wills. If you think that is a feel good job, try mediating feuding families and see how good you feel. And NO, it is NOT a conflict of interest. Pollitt was not requesting a raise for his cousin, but for the position and whomever might win the election next year. It has nothing to do with current judges. Get a grip people.

I believe all these raise requests are for the next election winners. It can't be a conflict when no one knows who the judges will be who will benefit. Will you post this, or does it not fit the answer you are looking for?

Do you think that all the other counties that are asking for an increase are abusing their powers as well? The increase would not apply to current terms and thus, current judges. Not an abuse and not a conflict.

No need for an attorney to tell you something using common sense. No conflict here.
