Atlantic City Fire Dept. - Expiring Grant = 51 Layoffs

ATLANTIC CITY - The expiration of a federal grant is forcing the fire department to layoff dozens of firefighters.

Atlantic City Fire Chief Dennis Brooks tells NBC 40 that come December 4, the expiration of the Federal S.A.F.E.R. grant will force the department to lay off 51 firefighters. Eight more will be demoted.

The grant, awarded in May 2011, allowed the department to maintain a staff of 264 firefighters.

Chief Brooks says the department has had no word from the federal government on whether or not the S.A.F.E.R. grant will be renewed.

Remember Salisbury's b.s. on this?

Salisbury wouldn't be smart enough to lay them off. Also, they said they wouldn't need layoffs because enough FF's would be retiring over the grant period to equal it out.

Let's see how true that was.

anonymous 9:31, the Firefighters lied, or should I say they mislead the public.

None of the Firefighters that claimed they'd be retiring will actually do so. None of them can financially afford to walk away from their high paying jobs.

Yet they want to be respected and honored.

Actually I believe that 3 have left. Dodd due to an injury, Rathel did his time and Bragg, who was fired for stealing comp. time from the city, than reinstated by the Mayor because they were party buddies. Not sure if any others are retiring any time soon.
