Ocean City Police Provides Home Security Check Program

OCEAN CITY — With many resort residents planning holiday travel or winter-shortening vacations, and thousands more using their beach property as second homes, the Ocean City Police Department has a residential security check program available to help ensure private property is protected, but it appears few are taking advantage of it.

With the arrival of the holiday season, numerous Ocean City residents will travel to see families over the next few weeks and countless more will take much-needed vacations to warmer climates after another busy season. For years, the OCPD has offered an invaluable program in which local residents can register their properties for random security checks by officers when they are not at home for extended periods of time.

Dear Officers of the OCPD,

For years, many of us on the Delmarva Peninsula have noticed that during the winter months, the population of Ocean City and other beach resort towns diminishes radically. Driveways are empty, stoplights are put on flashing mode, 3/4 of the stores are closed. In fact, 90% of the residences here are vacant. My lights are in "away" mode, my driveway is inactive, and I'm not waving at you on my way to the store each day.

If this is something you need written notification of each year from 90% of the population here, the other 10% of the citizenry probably is not in need of your services, as solving crime vs. looking at a vacant home are different things.

Therefore, I will deduce that not notifying you of my vacation time is probably the biggest exercise in futility I could ever imagine, and will probably not be wasting my time with it.

Good luck in your next job.

If citizens won't voluntarily submit to the police roaming around their property, looking in windows and "inspecting" it, the we will have to FORCE them to like it. I'm thinking a new "Orwell" tax. Maybe a yearly fine. Some liens on the property. Confiscation of property for those who fail to "comply". Civil convictions and community service for first time offenders and JAIL time for honest citizens who refuse to "toe the line". And PRISON for homeowners who actually shoot someone appearing in their bedroom at 3AM....you WILL comply, even if they have to bankrupt you or give you a little time in the pokey to convince you to "comply".
