Ocean Floor Mapping Initiative Underway Off Coast; Six-Week Effort

The next major step in the future development of a vast offshore wind farm got underway this week with the launch of a research vessel carrying teams of scientists that will spend the next month or so mapping and surveying the ocean floor in the designated area for the project.

On Monday, the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) was on hand at the commercial harbor in West Ocean City for the launch of the “Scarlett Isabella,” a 136-foot research vessel that will spend the next six weeks in an area about 10 to 30 miles off the coast of Ocean City designated as the Maryland Wind Energy Area (WEA). The vessel will host teams of scientists charged with mapping and surveying the ocean floor in Maryland’s designated WEA that could eventually be home to as many as 40 turbines off the coast of the resort.

The thorough geophysical survey of the ocean floor in the designated WEA is being conducted by CB&I/Coastal Planning and Engineering Inc., a private firm contracted by the state to conduct the study. The project comes with a $3.5 million price tag, which is being funded out of the state’s Offshore Wind Development fund. The $30 million fund was created out of the merger between Exelon and Constellation to provide research and development money for Maryland’s offshore wind energy project.

Why? Aren't we all with the global understanding that these windmills kill more birds than energy produced? Have we not said no to this already, publicly" Is there absolutely no support for this plan in the State of Maryland, except for O'mallethead? Will we just knuckle under to this waste of money?

Pi$$ off. O'Mallet. you are a buffoon.

Actually, I think there is a lot of support for projects such as these. There are many success stories already from small scale projects to huge projects already running in the US and abroad. In Europe, both Spain and the Netherlands derive a huge portion of their energy needs from wind in an environmentally and ecologically conscious manner. Do we need further study? Of course. Do we just stand firm and outright ignore the huge potential of wind energy? I hope not.

Unbelievable waste of money!

828, I'm with 1221, waste of money at this point. The big blades kill birds, and with providing the only place to land 15 miles offshore, will kill more. Also, electricity and salt water don't mix; I have known this for 50 years, and I'm sure I learned it from older folks back then who knew it from Alexander Graham Bell's time! You are correct, though, there is more work to be done, and redesigns to be done. O'Taxi is putting the cart before the horse here.
