HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 3-30-13

The Vote

A lot of us take for granted the many amenities we enjoy every day. Many have given up on voting because they think their one vote won’t matter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Local elections are sometimes won by just one vote. The results impact our financial future.

I have among my many historical letters and documents a letter dated October 18, 1909 from the Democratic State Central Committee, M. V. Brewington, Secretary, appealing for Democrats to get out and vote. A hundred years ago, most people who voted did so down strict party lines. Either you were a Democrat of a Republican. This letter goes on to say that the Democratic party in Wicomico County stands for progress, good roads, good schools and low taxes and entreats fellow Democrats to get out and vote or else the election could fall into Republican hands with their 1400 negro voters which control the destiny of that party. Apparently, much unlike today, the Afro-American community was largely behind the Republicans. Much of this was because Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.

This shouldn’t make any difference at all these days. We should vote for someone with a proven track record that is going to be fiscally responsible with our tax dollars. The campaign brochure accompanying this letter has ten short biographies of the candidates vying for the various offices. Most fall into the “windbag” category of heralding their virtues. Nowhere in there is mention of past accomplishments beneficial to the taxpayers. We should be very careful of “false prophets” with their promises. What should matter is looking back on their accomplishments and deciding if that is the best path to a prosperous future for us.

Politicians have not changed much over the years. They make great promises; tell us what we want to hear. But we should be keenly aware of who has been a truly financial watchdog and has a proven track record. No matter how good a politician has been, they can’t help us if we do not vote them back into office. I think we have all had a bellyful of “change”. Sometimes the fresh face and smooth talk are not the change we want or need. Politicians want power and that doesn’t always mean their constituents will get a better life. Look at past accomplishments to see what a candidate has brought to the table and will more than likely continue to do so.

But the important thing is that everyone casts their vote. It is a freedom and a right that many men have fought and died for. The turnout at the polls in this country is abysmal. We should be ashamed that so few people exercise this precious right. Remember, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the state of affairs.

My sentiments as well. Good going, George.

What you say is correct but frankly I believe that there are many that are just to stupid to vote. Others vote for only what will benefit them and not what is best for the country. Our system is broken and corrupt and the future doesn't look very bright to me.

George , you hit the nail on the head. The reason Obama is in office is because of the people who didn't vote , they are the ones who do the most complaining.
Of course we all know that many of the democrat votes were illegal.
If we have a good turn out for the city , maybe Debbie and Joe will when , I hope so!

I have to agree with you to an extent, but I seriously believe that the election was stolen. The Democrats have worked hard to steal elections and intimidate voters. You can't tell me that there were no votes cast for Romney in many of the precincts as reported. Also there were a lot of precincts that had over 100% voter turn out.

I do truly feel that Obama would have and should have lost the election if it wasn't stolen, but there was a low voter turn out as well.

4:22 ,I think I did say that some of the votes were illegal , we will never know how many. However , save your ammo , we may find out soon!
All's fair, in love and war!

Too stupid to vote? Save your ammo? Lemme guess, you're both 'smart' voters right?

First of all, we need someone worth voting for. Always picking the lesser of two evils still leaves you with evil. What have you accomplished really? The same crap still happens, maybe with a different face but nothing changes. Just electing someone isn't an end-all. You have to keep check on what they do after they get in office. As you should know, they lie and tell you anything to get into office and do whatever they want and what others tell them to do once behind that desk.

Remember, if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the state of affairs.

EVERYONE has to right to complain or not to complain about the state of affairs current and past. I don't know why people insist on spreading this falsehood around, other than trying to force people to vote. If one votes or not, they are still partly responsible for whoever is sitting in an office. People absolutely have a right to demand more from their elected servants. Most vote once and that's all they know or care about politics until the next election. It is an ongoing process. Both a voter and a non-voter have the right, read duty, to march into an elected officials office and ask questions and demand answers. Telling others to be quiet, they have no right to speak up is contrary to everything this country and the political process are founded on. People should be encouraged to get involved not to be quiet and lay down for anything that comes down the pike. You are really doing a disservice when you suggest that.
