Anti-Drone Blimps To Fly Over APG

Not the Goodyear blimp. Not the Met-Life airship.

The Army is bringing two huge blimps of its own brand to Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Or far above the APG, more accurately.

The military calls them aerostats. Each one is about 80 yards long - nearly as big as a football field.

we had one tethered to Cudjoe Key in the Florida Keys for may years in an attempt to combat drug smuggling. It took a lot of bullets and was always undergoing costly repairs. It "got away" 2 or 3 times when I lived there, and was finally taken down for good in the mid to late 80's. I'm not sure how many smugglers it caught, but it was obviously too costly to fly it!

They will be huge targets.

I'm also wondering if this is just another version of drones, but cheaper to operate! In the Fla. Keys, it's a National Wildlife Preserve where it's illegal to discharge a gun. (I have witnessed full auto fire out in the gulf mangroves there!) I think 8:35 may be correct, as here everybody has a rifle and loves target shooting. This may become an expensive experiment for the Feds, but, of course, it's not their money!

Remember, shoot at the tether right where it connects with the blimp. If everybody cooperates, this drone will disappear!

This causes the area to also be a no-fly zone for most aircraft. Previously the airspace was only restricted to 6000' now it will be 10,000...till someone hits the tether.

I'm not saying they are big, but I think even a cop could hit one of them if he had a full clip.
