Ocean City Take Home Vehicle Abuse

There has been controversy regarding take home vehicles for town of Ocean City workers.

This picture was taken Saturday March 24th @ 4:00 p.m at the Super Fresh in West Ocean City. I am pretty sure the driver wasn't coming from work as he was dressed in jeans, sweatshirt and sneakers. If that's the case then why don't they use their own vehicles.

On another note- Have you noticed that advertisers on this site are thriving and expanding, while advertisers on another certain site keep going out of business?

I could honestly care less. He could be on-call or headed to/from work. I can think of a lot more things that Ocean City does/doesn't do that waste much more money than any employee stopping by Super Fresh. If he/she is grabbing something for dinner after a long day at work then who the hell cares? If you're jealous then find a job that allows you to use a company vehicle.

It's terrible to try and get someone fired in this economy.

It could have been an "on-call" worker, emphasis on the word 'could'. In this day of tight budgets & high gas prices, Worcester County - along with Ocean City - should seriously examine their take home vehicle policy.

The abuse by Worcester workers is amazing. One deputy drives back & forth from Tyaskin every day & he is assigned to Stephen Decatur High as a school resource officer. According to Google Maps, that's 41.5 miles each way. Think about that - 83 miles just top get to & from their workplace on the County's gas.

If they're not "on-call", then their vehicles should be left at the Court House. Let them use some of their own gas...

@ 4:11 - It's not about getting someone fired, it's about saving City taxpayers $$$.

Most LE Agencies, give take home and personal use vehicle privileges to their officers as part of the benefits package. Many departments feel that a police vehicle in sight, doesn't matter if the officer is on duty or not, is a help in crime prevention.

It does not matter if this complaint was sent in by a reader or not. Joe you have been around long enough to know the in and outs of personal use of take home vehicle by LE. It is a shame you feel the need to slam another cop, instead of telling the viewer about the rules of a benefit package.

At least the officer was in his home town spending money. One thing I wish, is an officer had to at least live in the county of employment. Go to Ocean Pines and see the number of out of county vehicles.

How do you know the person was not working? They are not even 1/4 mile off the island.

No story here. Just a passing attempt to stir something up.

Maybe this employee is on week-end call and is required to use the vehicle in case they are needed.

What the beef anyhow? If you think they are wrong then report it to O.C. Don't be a cry baby here.

The municipal golf course superintendent lives in West Ocean City and the golf course itself is in West Ocean City, as well. And he works on Saturdays, too. This is probably not his vehicle but it's bad to make generalizations without knowing all the possibilities.

It ended up costing the people of Ocean City a quarter-of-a-million dollars when the Town decided to fire City Manager Dennis Dare, and someone is worried about THIS? The anger is misdirected, to say the least.

This is Hal Adkins truck, director of public works. Hal is one of the most efficent and honest employees you will ever find, and lives (as the crow flies) couple hundred yards from where this was taken (Food Lion, west Ocean City) So, he stopped by the store on the way home. God people, get a life!

No, the "quarter million dollar" city manager allowed EVERYONE (almost) a take home vehicle, and DOUBLED the total payroll to employees in 10 years, thats a FACT!

The only reason it cost tax payers so much for a new city manager 5:22 was because some jerks whined and it was decided to do a "nation wide search". So stupid considering OC has some wonderful employees who could do that job.
It's was the so called "minority" council who started this money spending search BS. Vote them out!

I concur and nothing more needs to be said.

Isn't that illegal? Or at least an infraction or rules violation? Cheese and crackers, seems like no one, and especially the government can follow the rules anymore.

@4:22 pm. lets assume the car in question is a Crown Vic and I am guestimating 21 mpg. That is about 4 gals per day X $3.88 = $15.52 per day. Multiply that X 5 days per week @ $77.60 and 52 weeks would be a whopping $4,035 per year in gas alone.

$4,035 per year is a lot of money. How much is the wear and tear on that vehicle? How much is the insurance? Nice perk I must say.

By the way who is the deputy? Name names!

Ok we will stop with the perk. And just pay them money instead. We saved wear and tear on the vehicle.

If it is Hal Adkins then knowing where he lives in relation to FoodLion and all the city owned property there is nothing wrong with him stopping at Foodlion. The only thing is the perseption which in this era should be avoided by government employees who have take home cars.
In my opinion Hal Adkins should be the city manager. He knows the city backwards and forwards and we have called him on occasion and I have nothing but praise for him.
Cymek, Knight and Lewis are the ones who didn't want him as city manager nor did that group calling themselves citizens for oc. Remember this at election time.
It's all their fault that OC had to spend all that money looking for a city manager. Those 3 council people have the mentality that it's not my money so lets spend it. They have no business looking and overseeing the people's money with their spend spend spend attitudes.

So he stopped at food lion on his way home. Big whoop! I bet no body on here can even qualify for his job. If he wants to stop somewhere on his way home so be it. And YES I am an ocean city tax payer. Give it a rest. It is people like @7:47 that make me pray for 2012.
