New Maryland Law Bans Reading Texts While Driving

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Motorists in Maryland will be prohibited from reading text messages while driving and may be pulled over by police under a new state law taking effect Saturday - one of a variety of new laws being added to the books.

A first offense of reading or sending a text while behind the wheel carries a fine of $70. A second-offense fine will be $110.

I noticed that the law affects those who are "behind the wheel" --

I suppose that if one were to read and/or sent a text message while stopped at a long red light, that person would be in violation?

The abuse of this can get substantial folks.

Notice how these laws always result in a money grab for the government. Everything is a fine payable to the government.
Someday we will take our country back. By force if neccessary!

Wait til they start labeling texting and driving as "agressive driving" and the fines triple. Maybe even call it "reckless driving" and REALLY get serious with the fines. Then the insurance companies bribe the "leaders" into putting "points" on your record and the fun begins. BUT--- citizens LET these "leaders" do this. "They know whats best for us", right? We can no longer think or act for ourselves without their help and the really terrible thing is that so many people go right along with that thought. The REALLY REALLY terrible thing is that our "leaders" believe it. too.

What is up with this laws every time I look out there is a speed limit sign that says doubled fine or the prices of the fine just increased and the police are really unreasonable because some of them are racist because there are cars pulled by a police officer look there different race or color and this is 9/10 of the time i see them pulled over. Also when I see a cop looking for fines to write I see a lot of them going fast or skipping stop signs and they are same color so the cops act like nothing happened.

9:54, you are correct. The new law bans texting even when stopped for a red light. I used to think that such laws were intrusive, but a couple of years ago I damaged my car by running into the car ahead of me, who I thought was turning right. I was fooling with my cell phone at the time. I am no teenager; I am in my late 60's with a clean driving record. Now I can see that the new laws make sense.
