Virginia Legislators’ Salaries Below National Average

In today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch, Tyler Whitney examines the salaries of Virginia legislators in contrast to their colleagues around the country.  We decided to look at the three (3) DelMarVa states.  Here is what we found:

Delaware $41,680 / year
Maryland $43,500 / year
Virginia (Senate) $18,000 / year
Virginia (House) $17,640 / year

Looks like voters in the Commonwealth are getting a pretty good deal.

Looks like 49 other states need to follow this path.

Can you believe that the annual session for the Maryland Assembly lasts but three months (90 days) and that the pay is $43,500? According to the World Almanac, however, Virginia's assembly meets just in January, so the per diem pay is actually higher in VA, if would appear. In addition, both states pay expenses.

Those types of salaries make it so only wealthy or people with other primary jobs can run for office. That is not a very good representative population of the states.

proper comparison would be Pay vs. In Session Days vs. Expense Accounts for each.

And if under the table money is included, those in Maryland make 5-10 times more.
