Mismatch Between Jobs, Job Seekers Contributes To Unemployment

Maryland has 210,000 unemployed residents searching for work. Maryland employers have 70,000 job openings they're trying to fill. The unemployment rate would drop overnight, state officials say, if many of the jobless people had the skills needed to fill those empty positions. Unfortunately, it's not working out nearly that neatly.

It is true, the unemployed workers who used to do carpentry, road construction, electricians, plumbers, etc are not well qualified for the jobs available to them.

They need to be "re-trained" to do the new jobs.

Some employers will train them on the job with pay! For example McDonald's will teach each of them how to push the buttons on the touch screen register and how to use the deep fat fryer for french fries.

Subway will also teach these folks how to bake bread and apply all the veggies the customer wants!

these are good paying jobs where the unemployed can earn up to 1/4 of what they used to make.

8:45 maybe you mean they can earn 1/4 of what they are pulling down off welfare, free housing, free electricity, free health care, free cell phones?
why work?

I'm thinking that employers look at their applications (and like them, I see several hundred or more per year) and wonder what the hell they wrote. Most of them can't spell words of five or more letters, can't write legible enough to be understood, don't understand basic grammar rules (no, black English or urban grammar does NOT work out well on applications or in an interview). But liberals want to blame US (employers, teachers, society) because THEY (the so-called students) skipped class, wanted to be a sports star (epic fail), joined a gang instead of the science club, and basically were coddled and excused from any standard of behavior or performance so they didn't feel bad about themselves. See prior article on Greenspan's comments. So much for building self esteem...

9:11 I was on unemployment once for about four months and I can promise you that none of those things you mentioned were free.
