Speaker Boehner Refuses To Back New Restrictions On Firearms

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is rejecting gun-control legislation offered by the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in response to the weekend shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and 19 others in Arizona.

Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.) announced plans Tuesday to introduce legislation prohibiting people from carrying guns within 1,000 feet of members of Congress.

King, who has previously called for the removal of illegal guns from the streets, made the announcement alongside New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the nation’s loudest voices for stricter gun laws.

King said the legislation is not intended only for the safety of government officials but also to protect the public. He said elected officials are not necessarily more important than constituents, but by protecting them in this way, they would feel safer in meeting federal officials at public events.

“The fact is they do represent the people who elect them, and it’s essential, if we’re going to continue to have contact, that the public who are at these meetings are ensured of their own safety,” King said.

King’s legislation got the cold shoulder from Boehner and other Republicans after it was announced.

Boehner spokesman Michael Steel said the Speaker would not support King’s legislation.

Representative King, your knee jerk reaction is inappropriate. Throughout the 2008 political campaign in states which have the lowest violent crime rates in the country and which also have legislated open carry and, or, concealed carry of firearms for law abiding firearms owners, the media plastered the airways with pictures of openly armed citizens in attendance at political rallys. There is little doubt, those were the safest environments in which political rallys could have been held. The axium rings true, "An armed society is a polite society."
No gun laws can prevent the perverted action of a crazed individual. If all of society were disarmed, criminals would still be armed. The rest of the population would sooner or later be...victoms.

Just another knee jerk reaction in Washington! C'mon officials and get a grip!
Be proactive instead of reacting to everything after it happens so you rush it through without simple thought process!
Keep an eye on these people everyone and take notes on the idiots we have in Washington. There's still a whole bunch more that need to be voted OUT - both Republican AND Democrat!
The idiocy is on BOTH sides of the aisle!

Joe no disrespect, Maryland has a restricted right to carry law. I could not get one when I worked as a Correctional Officer, which is just as dangerous if not more than a Police Officer's job. I had to deal with convicts, their families during visiting times, on a daily basis. Police has nowhere near this type of interaction. Look at the qualification on the application and you will see what I mean. Virginia and Delaware has right to carry laws. If I can buy a weapon, I should have the option to carry it without concrete probable cause such as in Maryland. If retired Police can carry, I should have that same option.

we may have the right to carry ,just try to get a permit and see what happens

no, maryland does not have a right to carry, if you have a gun in your car you better have the shells somewhere else and be on your way to from the range, gun show or hunting.
learn the law! Maryland is one of the most hostile states to personal firearms!
