Breaking News: Fruitland Town Manager John McDonnell Resigns

While a formal announcement is expected to be made this coming Tuesday at the regularly scheduled Council Meeting, Salisbury News has confirmed, John McDonnell is out.

The formal announcement will state that Mr. McDonnell resigned and while this may be true, Salisbury News has come to learn that enough Council Members pretty much said you either resign or you'll be fired.

John McDonnell was the former Mayor of Delmar and took on the Town Manager position a few years ago in Fruitland. The position is quite different than being Mayor and from what we have come to learn Mr. McDonnell simply didn't follow the rules as expected by Council.

This was the same position current County Executive Rick Pollitt held for many yeas in Fruitland and after speaking to several residents of Fruitland they're torn between Rick's current status as County Executive and scared to death he may return to Fruitland, should he lose this election as County Executive.

I've been told, I don't want Rick as County Executive but we sure as heck don't want him back in Fruitland either.

My guess is that you won't read about this anywhere else for several days, if at all.

Come on Joe. I don't agree with all Rick Pollitt's decisions, but he is an honorable stand-up guy. You have said it yourself. It is easy to criticize anyone in government these days. I boom times, politicians get too much credit (Bill Clinton). In bad times they get too much blame. I know I don't want his job. Given the economy and less tax revenue, no matter what he does on any issue, somebody is not going to be happy. At least he is willing to study the issues and make a decision.

The other good thing about Rick is that you can disagree with him on an issue, but that doesn't mean that he won't listen, and he does not "hate" those that disagree with him like Barrie Tilghman did. He respects other opinions, which is unlike many elected officials today.

Joe, tell me, do you agree with the above? You have personally dealt with him.

For those who want to throw him out of office, you might want to consider "be careful what you wish for..."

It's about time they dumped this dude.
What in the world took so long? Are they blind?

I would take Rick back in Fruitland! Or keep him as Executive for our County. Heck, I am all for him becoming the next Governor!

John is a good man. I hope this is not true.

Rick Pollitt did a good job in Fruitland and is doing a good job now.
I would vote for him again in a heartbeat.

I wonder if they will stall and stretch the hiring process, waiting to see if they can keep the job open for Rick.
You think Rick is doing such a great job, Bill?
Overpaying for parking lots while announcing furloughs and layoffs?
let's see who gets laid off.. how about the PIO..
Oh, no. Too essential.

John McDonnell and Rick Pollit are both nice guys, but neither of them were doing their job in Fruitland. Take a look around Fruitland-- start with the mess directly across the street from city hall that's been there for many years-- ignored by both of them.
Many of the zoning violations are long-standing, as a result of being overlooked as a favor.
And what about the council(s) that have allowed this to occur?
That's where the ultimate blame lies.
Who hired McDonnell? Who allowed this mess to go on for 3 years?
The election is coming up in October-- 3 seats.
We need some new blood. Some people with the wisdom and courage to do what's right for the town, not what suits them or their buddies.

John,

Thanks for all you did for Fruitland. Your a good man with a huge heart.

Rick,

Don't make plans on returning to Fruitland, I already have plans to vote for your re-election.

I think Fruitland has made a huge mistake!

Confused in Fruitland

Come on people, learn to read. Joe didn't say he doesn't like Rick, he said some people in Fruitland don't want Rick back. Time for hooked on phonics!

Rick is doing a good job as County Executive. Who would want to go back to that sh-- house, called Fruitland.

Rick is doing a good job.

I bet this was done in secret session and none of the councilmen will own up to it or admit how they voted. The public is always the last to know.

rick is "ok" however i have higher standards. I'm waiting for someone to stand up and run agaist him. where is that someone?

Rick is doing a good job?
Creating positions that are not necessary upon taking his office. Doling out 6% pay increases to top level county employees while denying others a pay raise. Working every way he can to remove the cap.
Threatening a decrease in services instead of dissolution of unnecessary positions.
Spending millions while mandating furloughs.
Letting Rai Sharma off the hook in a half million dollar theft is a good job? What about the 13 other arrests that were to be made in that theft?
Spending $1.5 on a parking lot that was supposed to be 5 acres then Natelson and Dzaman say oops we're only going to sell you 4.6 acres for the same money. Spending millions on another park on the west side.
Firing the charter mandated auditor and not replacing her. Wanting to spend $30 million on a new library that is not needed at this time.
All Rick does is straddle the fence. If this is what you call a good job, God help us all.

Rick won because our only other choice was Ron Alessi, remember? I like Rick as a person but if there is a better choice running I will vote for accountability. It won't be Cannon or McCain either!

The county continues to lack that aspect proven by all the county thefts. No attempts to hire a county auditor is a step for no future accountability.

9:16 The county charter makes it the Council's job to hire an auditor, not the County Executive's job. I agree this should be done, but your attempts to imply that it is Rick's fault is just another example of someone spouting off on a subject they know nothing about.

Rick needs to go. Lets put someone in that is not considered a good old boy!

Between the Fruitland City Council and Andrew Mitchell, Jr., John McDonnell was a lame duck. Not to say he was not capable; it's just that the other two named parties operate in a perpetual state of heads up their a - - - -. I might move to Fruitland just so I can unseat one of them. First motion: Fire Andrew!
