Hole y Crap!

When I received a call telling me there was a hole the size of a 55 gallon drum on the Rt. 13 overpass bridge heading south bound I thought, come on now, no way! This is the overpass over Rt. 50. I got there and truly couldn't believe my eyes. Clearly the photos don't lie.

I wish I had the time to look up the bridge ratings because I asked about this particular overpass and they said it was rated a "4" which sounded like that's pretty bad. This overpass is expected to be refurbished this year by the state but as you can see in the 4th & 5th pictures they have already made the same kind of repair right next to the new pothole.

I was told the patch repair will be 4 ft wide by 10 ft long! Vehicles have been driving over it all morning before someone finally came out and saw it was a serious issue and pulled crews from other locations to get right on this problem. Expect delays on your way home from work too because they had to block off Rt 50 below as well.

You mean, Gary did not find this. I guess its hard finding something when your truck was parked in your yard.

I dont blame you Gary, I would do same thing if I could get away with it.

Folks. . . I worked for a large A&E firm in Virginia Beach, Clark, Nexsen. It is a full service A&E firm whereby I worked side-by-side with Structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, fire protection engineers.

One day while going to visit a site one of the Structural engineers told me to pull off the side of the road near an overpass . . .similar to the Rt. 50overpass that just collapsed. He said look up at the disintegrating pan decking. He then showed me pieces of concrete on the roadway whereby it had been reported where several passing motorist had their windshields shattered from falling concrete debris above.

When I walked under the overpass, he pushed me aside and said don't go under it as he didn't trust the structural steel. Right about then a large semi-passed over the overpass and I kid you not I could actually see the concrete pieces falling down upon the roadway.

I said to the structural engineer, what are you going to do? He said he submitted his report and that the State Highway of Virginia had ordered some plywood to be attached to the underside of the pan decking to keep the concrete from falling onto passing cars.

Deteriorating bridges like these are everywhere case-in-point RT. 50overpass. The one that really scares me is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I DEFINATELY DO NOT TRUST IT! CHECK OUT THE HUGE HUMP AT THE EXPANSION JOINT NEAR THE PEAK. . . THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

This happened often to the old Rt 50 bridge over the Choptank River at Cambridge before the new bridge was opened. I used to go under it by boat and be able to see daylight up through the holes.

Must have been another Missing In Action job by Lord Comegys. His bosses should all be fired for allowing such rape of state taxpayers.

You think he's disgruntled now? Wait until he and Louise both lose in 2011! 2011 will be the time to take some more trash out.

Perhaps the SHA needs to provide an update to the citizens/taxpayers regarding the safety of this "bridge".

Push for it Joe. You're tenacious enough to get it done.

on main street under the train track, where you drive under. have you seen all the cracks there? they have been patched up. this is where the homeless hang out and beg for money when you drive by. its a matter of time before that falls in. God help us if there is a train going overhead.

The job was bid March 5th. Came in at a little under $4M. Should be starting soon.

Lets tear up and grind up that crap on Isabela St. and fill in the holes. I still cannot get over that waste of money.

These types of failures are not all that uncommon. SHA did an emergency repair in the left lane of the westbound US-50 overpass at US-301 in Queenstown about 3 months ago.

Similar deck failures were repaired on the old Woodrow Wilson Bridge prior to it's 1983 redecking. I remember seeing through one of the holes near the Virginia shoreline back in 1982.
