There are fears that the world is on the precipice of turning back the clock on globalization. In some ways, the case can be made globalization has been retreating since the financial crisis.
One of the strongest supporting data points of that argument is world trade data.
According to the CPB World Trade Monitor, the value of world exports (volume * price) has increased by less than 1% annually since making a high on 7/31/2007 compared to more than a 5% annualized growth rate since 1991 (beginning of the data series).
If we look at just volume data, the story doesn’t improve very much.
World export volume has increased at less than 1.5% annually since 7/31/2007. This is about 1/3 of the annual growth rate world export volumes has increased by since 1991.
Even with extraordinary global monetary easing in the post financial crisis world, world trade has been unable to find the extra gear it hit during the pre-crisis era.
So next time the mainstream media, economists, and liberal left blame Trump for collapsing world trade, let's look in that rear-view mirror of reality... and see what global trade did during Obama's "free trade is awesome" reign.

Some observations on recent negative trends in productivity, employment mismatch, and labor training and education from the increasingly more bearish David Rosenberg, who notes that the Trump's proposed policies may end up helping growth on the margins, but fail to focus on what is really important, making tens of millions of US workers competitive and qualified for today's jobs market.
I don't think we have a productivity problem — in fact, the demise of productivity is vastly overstated and that is because the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is likely vastly overstating labor input, and I’m talking here about how hours worked are estimated.
But the real travesty, and what I think deserves top priority (but I don’t see it), is that we have, in addition to 7.5 million officially unemployed (a number that is closer to 15 million when all the hidden unemployment is accounted for), 23.5 million Americans aged 25-to-54 who reside outside the confines of the labor force.

At the end of Trump's speech to a room filled with 400 employees of the CIA, Trump said, rather cryptically, that maybe he'd build them a bigger room 'by someone who knows how to build and we won't have columns, do you understand that?'

Trump tweets about Chicago 'carnage,' says he may 'send in the Feds!' if not fixed
President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday night about Chicago’s violence, saying he will “send in the Feds!” if the city “doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on.”Trump’s tweet refers back to a line in his inaugural address Friday about “the crime, and the gangs, and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.”
The tweet cited numbers — “228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016)” — that come from Chicago Tribune data used in a news story Monday about violence in the city so far this year. Our new favorite satire website, The Babylon Bee, headlined the weekend’s women’s march more appropriately than any (ahem) real news outlet did: “March Defends Women’s Right To Choose Conformity With Only One Political Viewpoint.” Of course, we noted a similar theme last week — that Some Women Are More Equal Than Others. So you get the point: Saturday’s march wasn’t about empowering all women, but rather about a bunch of aggrieved leftist loudmouths with nothing productive to do on a Saturday.

Some estimated that more than one million people marched in Washington, with millions more in other cities. Judge: ‘Nothing Short of Stunning’
The Texas judge presiding over the Obama’s Administration’s executive amnesty case has issued an order saying that the unethical behavior from the federal government’s attorneys has been “nothing short of stunning.”
Breitbart Texas reported in May of 2016 that U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen slammed U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) officials, writing that their “conduct is certainly not worthy of any department whose name includes the word ‘Justice’.” He added, “Suffice it to say, the citizens of all fifty states, their counsel, the affected aliens and the judiciary all deserve better.” He opined that the DOJ “purports to represent all Americans—not just those who are in favor of whatever actions the Department is seeking to prosecute or defend. The end result never justifies misconduct.” Hanen issued a 28-page memorandum opinion and order and lambasted federal government officials for misleading the Court during the executive amnesty litigation.
At the time of the May 2016 order, Hanen noted that the DOJ “has now admitted making statements that clearly did not match the facts. It has admitted that the lawyers who made these statements had knowledge of the truth when they made these misstatements.” The DOJ provided only the explanation that its lawyers “lost focus” or that the “fact[s] receded in memory or awareness.” He opined that the misrepresentations were made on “multiple occasions” and started at “the very first hearing this Court held.” He said he was mislead both in writing and in statements made in open court.

Macy's is Unloading a Bunch of Real Estate
With mall traffic declining steadily, department store giantMacy's is looking to downsize to a more defensible footprint. Back in August, the company announced plans to close about 100 stores. Last week, it identified about two-thirds of the locations that will be shuttered. Most of those will close within the next few months.
The main goal of closing stores is that it will better align Macy's brick-and-mortar footprint with consumer shopping trends. However, a secondary benefit is that these store closures will free up a lot of excess real estate that Macy's can sell. That process has already begun and is likely to continue at a rapid pace this year.

Michigan Man Whose Drug Sentence Commuted By Obama Is Shot Dead
SAGINAW (WWJ/AP) – A man whose drug-related prison sentence was commuted in November by President Barack Obama has been fatally shot at a federal halfway house in Michigan after two men with assault-style rifles sought him out, police said.
Two men wearing masks went into Bannum Place in Saginaw on Monday night with plans to kill 31-year-old Damarlon Thomas, a former Saginaw gang member. Lt. David Kaiser said Thomas was shot several times by one of the men as some of the roughly two dozen people at the home were held at gunpoint.
“One person watched over a group of them while another subject located the victim and executed him,” Kaiser told The Saginaw News. “They were looking for this person.”

The Anti-Semite Who Organized the 'Women's March on Washington'
A leading organizer of the Women's March was the Palestinian-American activist Linda Sarsour, executive director of the Arab American Association of New York. This group was founded shortly after 9/11—not to condemn the attacks, of course, but rather, to lament “the heightened sense of fear and the acts of blatant discrimination aimed at [the Muslim] community” in the racist wasteland known as America.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President-elect Trump’s job performance. Forty-three percent (43%) disapprove.
The latest figures include 42% who Strongly Approve of the way Trump is performing and 33% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of +9.
