Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ Is the Most Iconic Song Ever, According to Science
Science hath declared that Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the most iconic song of all time. The seminal grunge track — a cut from SPIN’s Best Album of the Past 30 Years, Nevermind — was placed at the top of a list of 50 songs by researchers from Goldsmiths, University of London, according to the Daily Mail. Computer scientist and musician Dr. Mick Grierson examined songs featured in seven ‘all-time best’ lists from sources like Rolling Stone and NME, and ran them through analytical software to compare their key, BPM, chord variety, lyrical content, timbral variety, and sonic variance. John Lennon’s “Imagine” took second place. U2’s “One,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” rounded out the top five.
“We found the most significant thing these songs have in common is that most of them use sound in a very varied, dynamic way when compared to other records,” Grierson explained. “This makes the sound of the record exciting, holding the listeners attention. By the same token, the sounds these songs use and the way they are combined is highly unique in each case.”
“Ultimately,” Grieson added, “there is no ‘formula’ for this, other than to make your song sound as different, diverse and exciting as possible.”

New Invasive Fly Shuts Down $700 Million Florida Fruit Industry
A tiny fly has forced a sizable and productive agricultural area in Florida’s Miami-Dade County to grind to a halt. The creature, known as the Oriental fruit fly, is capable of feeding and laying eggs upon 400 different types of fruit crops. It was first spotted in Miami weeks ago and has since spread to Redland, a community in Miami-Dade that is home to many fruit growers raising crops such as papaya, tomatoes and dragon fruit.
The finding led Florida's agriculture commissioner, Adam Putnam, to declare a quarantine around 85 square miles of land in the region, an area larger than Manhattan and the Bronx combined. At this time, most crops cannot leave the area; much of the fruit will soon go to waste. Some crops can be shipped after being irradiated, but that is an expensive process.
The quarantine went into effect two weeks ago, just as farmers were preparing to harvest a variety of fruit crops, according to NPR.

LINTHICUM, Md. (AP) — An eight-legged creature that escaped in the cargo hold of a passenger flight from BWI to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International grounded the plane and sent passengers onto another flight.

Father: Daughter was in car when teens attacked
Anthony Japzon said teens attacked his car while his daughter was inside. He described the attack as unnerving, unprovoked and totally random.
"Everybody surrounded the car, and they started kicking the car," Japzon said. "I picked my daughter up from school, and we were coming over here to get her a Slurpee."
Japzon said he and his daughter were in the parking lot of the 7-Eleven near Mondawmin Mall around 3 p.m. Wednesday, just after city schools dismissed for the day. If it were not for the shelter of their car and the coincidence of a patrol officer stopping by, Japzon believes they would have been physically harmed.

Hogan budget chief resists calls from Democrats to relax austerity measures
Appearing before the House and Senate committees that handle fiscal matters in the Democrat-controlled legislature, Brinkley shot down a question from Sen. Richard S. Madaleno Jr. (D-Montgomery) about whether Gov. Larry Hogan (R) would be open to raising property taxes to help offset the state’s rapidly growing debt.
Madaleno noted that former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican during whose administration Hogan served as appointments secretary, reluctantly supported such a move in 2003. But Brinkley wasn’t swayed.
“No, this governor will not support a property-tax increase,” the budget chief said of Hogan, who won an underdog victory last fall by promising to roll back many of the tax and fee increases enacted by then-Gov. Martin O’Malley, who is also a Democratic presidential candidate.

Francis says that every life is sacred and society can only benefit from rehabilitating those convicted of crimes.
The pope noted that U.S. bishops have renewed their call to abolish capital punishment. That idea is unpopular, however, with many American politicians.
The pontiff did not specifically mention abortion — a particularly contentious issue in Congress at the moment that threatens to force the shutdown of the U.S. government next week.

Judge: Maryland prison mistreated transgender inmate
Neon Brown, who goes by Sandy, said in a grievance that she was sent to the state prison at Patuxent in February 2014 for a psychological screening.
Brown said she was placed in solitary confinement, and kept there for 66 days despite a directive from the jail warden that staff shouldn't segregate her from the rest of the population.
During that time, she was routinely harassed by guards who made fun of her while she showered, including one who told her to commit suicide, Brown said in the complaint.

Military Blimps Floating Over Baltimore Area Labeled A ‘Failure’
The military blimps floating over the Baltimore area since December are being labeled a “failure,” according to a newly released investigation by The Tribune.

A dad frustrated with Common Core wrote the best check to his kid's school
Herrman recently posted a photo on Facebook of a check he wrote to the school in Painesville, Ohio, in which the dollar amount of the check was expressed as a nonsensical string of Xs and Os.
The school uses the Common Core, Herrmann says, the standardized (and often criticized) curriculum designed to level the playing field in American education.
Though Herrmann admits he never sent the check in, he does joke that the school should be perfectly capable of deciphering the correct amount, given its use of the Common Core.
