New plan could bring tolls to Virginia interstates
Federal funding for Virginia highways is set to expire at the end of May. Part of President Barack Obama’s solution is to open all of Virginia’s interstates to tolls.
The state’s massive fund for fixing highways is about to run out of money, with a deadline at the end of the month. If that happens, with short-term band-aids used up by the fall, 43,000 construction jobs in Virginia are at risk, and 400 state projects will be put on hold or reassessed.
“Tolling existing interstate lanes — which drivers already pay for through their tax dollars — is the worst possible option for paying for roads and for raising road revenue,” said Julian Walker with the Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates.

Princess Anne, MD, May 5, 2015– On Thursday May 7th at 7 pm, the Somerset County Planning Commission will be addressing the extremely contentious discussion about the expansion of poultry CAFO complexes and public health concerns, as they decide if the county should adopt a Public Health Ordinance. The meeting will be held at 11916 Somerset Ave. in Princess Anne, MD.
Residents of Somerset County had met with their PlanningCommission members in November 2014 about their concerns related to the expansion of new industrial scale Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) complexes in their rural communities, and are now concerned that their request for a stakeholder workgroup to discuss the human health impacts from large scale animal operations close to residential neighborhoods has been ignored.
They are concerned the Planning Commission has by-passed their request to let residents, county health department, county staff, and agriculture representatives work together to make recommendations to county planning staff for changes to county zoning codes related to public health and CAFO developments.
Lisa Inzerillo, a resident of Backbone Road near Princess Anne, expressed her concern, “We asked specifically for residents and the county health department to be part of a stakeholder group that would make recommendations to the County Commissioners. As a fourth generation farm owner, I have serious concerns about the Delmarva Poultry Industry’s credentials when dealing with public health.”

Two years ago, I highlighted the case of Daniel Chong, a California student who was thrown in a holding cell and forgotten about for 5 days without food or water. His situation became so desperate, he was forced to drink his own urine in order to survive. The post was titled, Student Forgotten in California Jail Cell by the DEA for 5 Days Without Food or Water. Here’s an excerpt:
While a cash payout should be part of any sort of justice for Daniel, I wonder if any of the individuals responsible for this will be held accountable? That to me is the key point. Just as bankers simply pay a fine for egregious crimes that represent only a small part of their profit from the activity (but almost never face criminal charges), so too it seems the police and government bureaucrats almost never face serious repercussions for any their actions, no matter how heinous or unconstitutional.

Cop Gets Slap On Wrist For Slugging Handcuffed Woman
MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) – Security video from the garage of the Miami Beach Police Department shows a group of officers milling about, a petite, handcuffed woman standing among them. The woman reaches out her foot, as if to trip one of the officers, who then slugs her in the face and kicks her.
Miami Beach police released the video, along with more than 500 pages of investigative documents Monday, after a lengthy investigation of the incident that occurred in July, 2013.
The woman, Megan Adamescu was left with a swollen face and concussion. The fist-swinging, kicking cop was Officer Philippe Archer. Earlier, he had karate-kicked and punched 50-year-old Andrew Mossberg, leaving Mossberg’s face, cheek and forehead bruised and bloody.
Mossberg had come upon the cop, who was wearing a casual shirt and jeans, rummaging through an inebriated Adamescu’s purse.
He thought he was seeing a robbery, dialed 911 and shouted out that he was calling the police.
“Apparently that really infuriated him, because he rushed me, kicked me in the head, the left side of the head, and knocks me on the ground,” Mossberg told CBS4 News shortly after the incident in 2013. “While I’m on the ground he punches me twice, and I’m knocked out.”

Couple guilty of sex on beach, now ‘sex offenders’
A jury Monday found a couple guilty of having sex on Bradenton Beach after only 15 minutes of deliberation.
The convictions carry a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
Jose Caballero, 40, and Elissa Alvarez, 20, were charged with two counts each of lewd and lascivious behavior for having sex on a public beach on July 20, 2014.
Video played in the courtroom during the 1- 1/2-day-long trial showed Alvarez moving on top of Caballero in a sexual manner in broad daylight. Witnesses testified that a 3-year-old girl saw them.
Both Caballero and Alvarez will now have to register as sex offenders.

An Auburn woman claiming to be an ambassador for God and his son, Jesus Christ, is suing all homosexuals.
Sylvia Driskell, 66, asked an Omaha federal judge to decide whether homosexuality is a sin.
Citing Bible verses, Driskell contends “that homosexuality is a sin and that they the homosexuals know it is a sin to live a life of homosexuality. Why else would they have been hiding in the closet(?)”

IRS watchdog: Only 39 percent of IRS workers who cheated on their taxes had to leave the agency
And while the law says the IRS must fire anyone who willfully violates federal tax law, only 39 percent of those people were fired. The rest of the cases — representing 960 employees — were “mitigated to lesser penalties such as suspensions, reprimands, or counseling.”

Why No Discounts For ALL Americans?
A new bill would make prescription drugs cheaper for those covered by the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) introduced the bill. It would change contracting requirements for prescription drugs. Right now, FEHBP is planning to contract with pharmacy benefit managers. They will act as middlemen to negotiate prices with drug companies. The new law gives the Office of Personnel Management more oversight over pharmacy managers. They'll have to return any rebates or discounts back to FEHBP. The National Treasury Employees Union said it supports Lynch's bill.

Do We Really Need Libraries?
A new campaign, Invest in Libraries, puts forth that in the past 10 years, the city government has reduced funding for public libraries by nearly 20 percent and 1,000 workers or so have been trimmed from the payroll. The campaign calls on the city to increase its support in various ways, such as restoring $65 million in operating funds.
The New York Times reports that "the city's three public library systems — the New York Public Library, the Brooklyn Public Library and the Queens Library — are seeking $1.4 billion in city funds over the next decade to bring all 217 public library branches up to modern building standards."

ACLU asks feds about air surveillance of Baltimore protests
The American Civil Liberties Union is asking federal agencies about the use of airplanes to monitor protests in Baltimore over the last week.
The ACLU filed Freedom of Information Act requests Wednesday with the FBI and other agencies seeking details about the flights of Cessna aircraft over Baltimore that the ACLU said were “indicative of surveillance activity.”
The issue was first reported in The Washington Post.
Baltimore police regularly used helicopters to monitor protests throughout the city and broadcast instructions to protesters about implementation of a curfew and other issues. But privacy advocates say fixed-wing aircraft could potentially be used to conduct more sweeping surveillance.

Just like we turn to our smartphones and tablets for on-the-go or on-the-couch entertainment, so are we picking up mobile devices to search the Internet more, both here and in other parts of the world, according to the Associated Press reporting on a digital advertising conference today.
While some computer and technology companies tied to PCs have struggled to survive in the new smartphone/mobile-focused world that Apple kicked off with the first iPhone in 2007, Google has been surfing along pretty well because its search engine and other services come standard in its Android mobile operating system, which is used on most non-Apple devices.

“We are part of the problem,” Batts told CNN’s Evan Perez in an interview.
“The community needs to hear from us that we haven’t been part of the solution, and now we have to evolve,” Batts said. “Now we have to change.”
