Ocean City Fire Department Reminds Ocean City Residents: Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives!

 Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire. That’s the message behind this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!”

Along with firefighters and safety advocates nationwide, the Ocean City Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) during Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, to remind local residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home and testing them monthly.

According to the latest NFPA research, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Obama administration moves to keep hearing into treatment of force-fed Guantanamo inmate secret

The White House wants a court hearing into a Guantanamo Bay prisoner held without trial since August 2002 held in secret.

Abu Wa'el Dhiab, from Syria, has been on hunger strike and claims that attempts by medics to force feed him are abusive.

However, the Obama administration claims that much of the information about Dhiab is highly classified and cannot be discussed in open court.

The Justice Department claims that 'an open hearing risks unauthorized disclosure of classified or protected information. The record in this case is large, with classified and protected information often inextricably intertwined with unclassified information'.

Dhiab's legal team claims that their client has to be forcibly removed from his cell by guards, and strapped to a chair where the force feeding is carried out.

The Defense Department counters that they only force feed patients against their will to keep them alive.

WHO: NO EBOLA VACCINE BEFORE MID-2015

NEW YORK – The World Health Organization said Wednesday that the manufacture, financing and distribution of a large-scale Ebola vaccine is not possible until the middle of next year at the earliest.

WHO is expediting Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials on two highly promising experimental Ebola vaccines, hoping to obtain approval next February.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control reported the first case of the current strain of Ebola brought to the U.S. by a traveler.

“The Ebola outbreak currently ravaging parts of West Africa is the most severe acute public health emergency in modern times,” WHO said in a statement issued from Geneva.

Texas Girl Kidnapped 12 Years Ago Rescued During Secret Mission In Mexico

A Texas girl abducted 12 years ago was rescued Tuesday during a secret, multi-agency mission in Mexico, MyFoxAustin.com reported.

Sabrina Allen, now 17, was located in a town southeast of Mexico City with her mother Dana Llorens, who has been taken into custody. The mom, who was reportedly last seen with the girl on April 19, 2002, was extradited to Texas and charged with aggravated kidnapping.

The secret mission to find the girl involved operatives with the FBI, U.S. Marshals and Mexican Authorities.

"Central Bankers have moved from being 'nudgers' on monetary policy to basically managing fiscal policy," warns Rick Santelli, adding that "in the West, it's now basically the same." As Santelli points out so accurately, the central bankers have admitted as such, noting "they have to dabble in that direction because nothing can get done in 'politics'" in the US or Europe "for the people - the voters." What this has done, Santelli chides calmly is "take the voters out of the game." U.S. Ebola Patient May Have Flown Through Dulles

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- The man who was diagnosed with Ebola in Texas may have flown through Dulles airport when returning to the U.S, United Airlines said in a release on Wednesday.

United released the believed flight itinerary based on information provided by the CDC:

"Brussels to Washington Dulles, Flight 951 and Washington Dulles to Dallas-Fort Worth, Flight 822."

Sheriff Exam in Texas

A young Texan grew up wanting to be a lawman. He grew up big, 6' 2", strong as a longhorn, and fast as a mustang. He could shoot a bottle cap tossed in the air at 40 paces.

When he finally came of age, he applied to where he had only dreamed of working: the West Texas Sheriff's Department. After a series of tests and interviews, the Chief Deputy finally called him into his office for the young man's last interview. The Chief Deputy said, "You're a big strong kid and you can really shoot. So far your qualifications all look good, but we have, what you might call, an "Attitude Suitability Test" that you must take before you can be accepted. We just don't let anyone carry our badge, son."

Then, sliding a service pistol and a box of ammo across the desk, the Chief said, "Take this pistol and go out and shoot: six illegal aliens, six lawyers, six meth dealers, six Muslim extremists, six Democrats, and a rabbit."

"Why the rabbit?" queried the applicant.

"You pass," said the Chief Deputy. "When can you start?"

President Barack Obama has taken a lot of flack since his Sunday night “60 Minutes” interview, in which he blamed the intelligence community for his failure to tackle the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. And that is right and proper. Because not only was his excuse of blaming us a lie, but when questioned on his lie, White House press secretary Josh Earnest doubled down with a whole new lie — both of which are easily, publicly proven false.

On Sunday, Obama said the intelligence community had underestimated the rise of ISIS, saying in an interview with CBS, “Our head of the intelligence community, Jim Clapper, has acknowledged that, I think, they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria.”

But we know that isn’t true, as nearly a dozen administration officials have testified to the threat posed by ISIS publicly over the last year.

How Your Body Keeps You From Getting Sick

The immune system is critical for protecting against illness-causing organisms, such as viruses, bacteria and fungi, which are collectively known as pathogens. Without it, we would quickly become infected, sicken, and die.

Immune cells are constantly on the lookout for pathogens, patrolling the blood by moving around in the blood. Around half your blood volume is fluid known as plasma; the remainder is made up of millions of different types of cells.

The majority of cells are red blood cells that transport oxygen around. A minority are white blood cells, or immune cells that act as the body's army. The immune system produces many different types of these white blood cells, each with a specific role.

The Factory

All blood cells start their life in the bone marrow, which is the hollow part of the bones; every cell type originally comes from blood stem cells. While blood stem cells produce all of our blood cells, other types of stem cells in the bone marrow produce organs, the bone itself and so on.

Stem cells are able to replace themselves, but must also constantly produce new cells to replace old ones. Red blood cells are replaced after several months, while different immune cell lifespans range from days to years.

Surveillance System Helps To Monitor Poachers On The Bay

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — They go largely unseen, but 24 hours a day, there are eyes on the bay. They’re looking for boats in trouble and boats breaking the law.

Alex DeMetrick reports they’re also watching out for police.

Natural Resources Police have 1,200 miles of the Chesapeake and its tributaries to patrol—meaning NRP officers’ eyes can’ be everywhere but still they find poachers in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.

“It’s kind of surprising a lot of the times. How did we know they were here?” said Natural Resources Police Officer Greg Jilek.

CDC Warns Funeral Homes in U.S. to Prepare For Ebola Victims

Recommendations caution workers not to embalm corpses

The Centers for Disease Control is advising funeral homes in the United States on how to handle the remains of Ebola victims, although officials are keen to stress that the development is not a cause for alarm.

A three page list of recommendations instructs funeral workers to wear protective gear while handling Ebola victims, as well as warning them not to carry out autopsies or to embalm corpses.

“If the outbreak of the potentially deadly virus is in West Africa, why are funeral homes in America being given guidelines?” asks WFSB.com.

Last night it was revealed that a Dallas hospital is holding a potential Ebola victim in “strict isolation” after the patient was admitted based on symptoms and “recent travel history.”

Alysia English, Executive Director of the Georgia Funeral Directors Association, dismissed suggestions that Americans should be alarmed by the recommendations.

“Absolutely not. In fact, if they weren’t hearing about it, they should be a whole lot more concerned,” said English.

Tougher Domestic Violence Law Takes Effect In Maryland

WASHINGTON -- A law that stiffens penalties for certain acts of domestic violence has officially taken effect across Maryland starting Wednesday.

"I think this is a very important step," says John McCarthy, State's Attorney for Montgomery County.

Under the measure, a person convicted of committing domestic violence may have up to five extra years added to their sentence if the crime happened in front of a child.

Reports have been flooding the West in recent months of Muslim terrorists beheading Christians in the Middle East, imposing crucifixion as a penalty, killing children and abducting women for the purpose of sexual slavery.

But those are the “radicals” who don’t represent Islam, Obama administration officials and others repeat. President George W. Bush said Islam is a “religion of peace,” and Obama frequently has defended Islam, most recently insisting the brutal ISIS army that has taken over portions of Syria and Iraq has nothing to do with the religion.

Secret Service chief quits amid scandal

Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned on Wednesday, after a security breach at the White House and other high-profile incidents raised widespread concerns about the safety of the president and his family.

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson announced the resignation in a written statement, and the White House confirmed her decision shortly afterward.

"Today Julia Pierson, the Director of the United States Secret Service, offered her resignation, and I accepted it," Johnson said. "I salute her 30 years of distinguished service to the Secret Service and the Nation."

Maryland Looks At Ending Lifetime Casino Ban

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - The agency that oversees Maryland's casinos is considering eliminating a program that allows gambling addicts to sign up for a lifetime ban from casinos.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency says it's planning to examine how the program is working and study changes. No timetable has been set.

Agency Director Stephen Martino tells The Capital Gazette that if the voluntary self-exclusion program is axed, gamblers would still be able to sign up for a two-year ban that includes counseling for problem gambling and a healthy-lifestyle program.

A Man With A Gun Stopped The Oklahoma Beheader From Murdering Another Woman

Anti-gun liberals of the world please take note – it was a man with a gun that stopped the Oklahoma beheader from beheading another woman. If a man with a gun had not been there and had not shot 30-year-old Alton Alexander Nolen, he would have finished his attack on his second female victim. And after that, Nolen would have probably kept beheading people for as long as he could before the authorities arrived. Of course this detail has been greatly played down by the reports in the mainstream media. They never want to say anything good about men with guns. But I’ll bet 43-year-old Traci Johnson sure is thankful that there was a man with a gun there to prevent her from losing her head.

The hero in this situation was an Oklahoma County reserve deputy named Mark Vaughan. But because he was a man with a gun, he is getting very little attention from the big news networks. The following is from a local news report that described what happened when Nolen went after his second victim…

At that point, Lewis claims Nolen met 43-year-old Traci Johnson and began attacking her with the same knife.

Officials say at that point, Mark Vaughan, an Oklahoma County reserve deputy and a former CEO of the business, shot him as he was actively stabbing Johnson.

“He’s, obviously, a hero in this situation,” Sgt. Lewis said, referring to Vaughan. “It could have gotten a lot worse.”
