Frank Calcaterra was in his 80s in 2008 when his family hired a home care company to help the former metro Detroit funeral home owner look after his ailing wife Jonnie, who had dementia.
The company — Kentucky-based ResCare — sent Tangie Coleman, who, at the time, had a warrant out for her arrest, records show.
Jonnie’s jewelry soon began to disappear, as did Frank Calcaterra’s sizable fortune — estimates from court filings put the loss at anywhere from more than $500,000 to more than $1.5 million. When Jonnie Calcaterra died in a nursing home in January 2012, Coleman and her mother were living in Frank Calcaterra’s lakefront home in Waterford and he was sleeping in the basement.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance video from one of two restaurants where police were called early Saturday, Chief Tim Brinkley told The Associated Press on Monday. He said they’re also trying to find out why it took so long for anyone to call 911 about the fight outside the Huddle House

'Race Hustlers' Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton Trying to 'Monetize' Ferguson Unrest
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) slammed "race hustlers" like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for trying to "monetize" the civil unrest in Ferguson and raise their profiles.
"They're race hustlers," King said this week on Iowa's WHO radio. "Tawana Brawley, the one who falsely accused rape that Al Sharpton made the beginnings of his career off of, he's never apologized for that." Jackson was reportedly booed when he asked for donations during a Ferguson rally.
"All the violence that was perpetrated in the name of a rape that never existed," King said, while speaking of Sharpton, who is reportedly the White House's man on the ground in Ferguson. "So, when people pit people against each other on the basis of race, Jan, that is a sin to do that. It costs lives in this country and it causes social unrest and it keeps this country from healing together."

Buchanan: Obama Will 'Set the Country Completely on Fire' with Executive Amnesty by Labor Day
On the Friday broadcast of “The McLaughlin Group,” columnist Pat Buchanan predicted that President Obama would grant amnesty to illegal immigrants via executive order by Labor Day and that such an action would “set the country completely on fire.”
After Washington Examiner Chief Congressional Correspondent Susan Ferrechio argued that “Democrats could gain from Hispanic voters turning out, especially if the president decides to take key executive actions in this summer that would help Hispanics who are here in the country, perhaps living here illegally. That could boost popularity for the party,” Buchanan responded “executive amnesty will set the country completely on fire. I do agree, it might get out the Hispanic vote, but you will have red state Democrats denouncing the president for doing it, for engaging in unconstitutional action. It would be a tremendous firestorm which would really polarize the nation.”

Al Sharpton Rips ‘Policing’ At Brown Funeral

"America, it’s time to deal with policing,” Sharpton said Monday at funeral services for Brown at Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church, addressing a crowd that included politicians, civil rights activists and celebrities, as well as many members of the Brown family. “We are not the haters, we’re the healers."
Sharpton has been a vocal activist against police brutality within the African-American community, and has been in Ferguson during the weeks following Brown’s death as protests broke out and sometimes turned violent. Sharpton was also among the thousands of protesters who marched against police brutality in Staten Island on Saturday.

In a state wracked with clashes over its explosive expansion of fracking, residents of Lafayette, Colorado just outside Boulder, have filed a motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent the state of Colorado, Gov. John Hickenlooper and the Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA) from taking away the town’s right to ban the practice....
The plaintiffs are ... represented by the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund, a Pennsylvania-based group that provides affordable representation to communities clashing with deep-pockets corporations. CELDF executive director Thomas Linzey said of the Lafayette lawsuit:
“The right to local, community self-government serves as the foundation for the American system of law. Yet the people’s right to self-governance has been routinely ignored by our elected representatives and overridden by the courts in favor of corporate rights. This class action lawsuit is merely the first of many by people across the United States whose constitutional rights to self-govern are routinely violated by state governments working in concert with the corporations that they ostensibly regulate. The people of Lafayette will not stand idly by as their rights are negotiated away by oil and gas corporations, and by their state government.”

Worried About Date Rape? These Guys Have the Nail Polish for You
While the pundits and policymakers debate the issue, four guys at North Carolina State University are doing something proactive (and unorthodox): inventing a nail polish that can detect date rape drugs.
As the Triangle Business Journal reported, the four undergraduate students started “Undercover Colors.”
They developed a prototype nail polish, which works like so: Dip your finger into your drink, and if someone has spiked it with date rape drugs, the nail polish will change colors.

Obama hatches plan to explode welfare
More than one-third of Americans are now receiving means-tested federal benefits, and Heritage Foundation analyst Rachel Sheffield says the Obama administration is planning to vastly increase spending on welfare and now measures the success of public assistance programs by the number of people signed up for benefits.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Census Bureau released statistics showing nearly 110 million Americans lived in households receiving benefits from one or more welfare programs at the end of 2012. That amounts to roughly 35.4 percent of the population. The data show the programs with the most beneficiaries include Medicaid (nearly 83 million people), food stamps (more than 51 million) and the Women, Infants and Children program (22.5 million).
Sheffield said while the 2012 numbers do not represent a huge leap from recent reports, they do confirm the sheer size of U.S. public assistance expenditures.

Philly's first Spanish immersion preschool opening 2015
Filling a needed niche for families seeking a space for comprehensive bilingual early education, Philadelphia’s first Spanish immersion preschool is set to open January 2015.
The preschool aims to develop children into multicultural students with a staff of mostly native Spanish speakers with strong backgrounds in early childhood education. The school will teach through an all-Spanish curriculum that encourages learning through play, literacy, and math development.
Currently it will serve students 18 months to 4 years old. The project seeks to support total Spanish immersion that will allow a child to optimize his or her language learning potential.
“Research shows that students who study a second language score higher on average than their monolingual peers. Bilingualism can also benefit in the workplace. Research shows that bilingual workers earn, on average between 5 percent and 20 percent more than their monolingual counterparts,” states the school in its website.
The program also highlights the proven immediate cognitive advantages of multilingualism to help kids’ brains to work more efficiently. “For some families, it helps keep cultural and ethnic heritage alive; others are drawn to the promise of personal and professional opportunities in the future,” stated the educational institution.

“Kings Dominion Law” Still Reigns in Virginia
Virginia prohibits city and county school districts from starting class before Labor Day, thanks to a 1986 law designed to give an extra week’s worth of busy crowds to the state’s tourism industry, especially theme parks like Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens. Despite many attempts by some legislators to allow local school systems to set their own calendars, the law survives, largely thanks to regular donations from amusement park operators, giving the statute its nickname of the “Kings Dominion Law.”
Between 2001 and 2013, Kings Dominion gave $226,544 to candidates and political action committees around the state, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. The park is equally generous with free admission. Over the same period, it gave at least 324 free tickets—current face value $54—to lawmakers. (The actual number is much higher, as several finance reports did not disclose how many free tickets the park gave.) The roller-coaster lobby was even more prolific before Anheuser-Busch sold Busch Gardens. Between 2001 and 2009, when it dumped the Williamsburg amusement park, the beer giant gave nearly $1 million to Virginia lawmakers, political parties, and campaign funds, along with its share of free tickets.

INCIDENT: Motor Vehicle Crash with Injuries

SYNOPSIS: Officers responded for a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a car and a motorcycle. The motorcycle operator was found to be trapped under the car. Officers, EMS and witnesses were able to elevate the vehicle off of the motorcycle operator and immediately began CPR. The motorcycle operator was transported to PRMC and stabilized for transport to The University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and is currently in critical condition. The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is assisting with the reconstruction portion of the investigation. The Fruitland Police Department would like to thank the citizens that stopped to assist at the crash scene and ask that other witnesses please contact the Fruitland Police Department at (410)548-2803. Neither drugs nor alcohol are known to be a factor at this point in the investigation. Charges are pending.
