Md. Senate Committee Considers Transgender Anti-Discrimination Bill

The gay marriage bill has been enacted in Maryland with Gov. Martin O'Malley's signature Thursday evening, but the next civil rights battle has only begun.

A Maryland Senate committee is considering an anti-discrimination bill for transgender people.

In Maryland certain laws prohibit discrimination, but transgender people don't have those protections. But by the end of this legislative session, that might change.

Dr. Dana Beyer, a retired eye surgeon from Chevy Chase, was raised as a man, but always felt like a woman. And like many transgender people she faced discrimination. Twenty years ago during a workplace lawsuit, she says a judge called her a pervert, and attorneys said she didn't deserve respect. She says she didn't get a fair trial.

TEARFUL EIGHTH GRADER DEFENDS CONTROVERSIAL ESSAY ON GBTV: NOT A ‘RACIAL ISSUE,‘ IT’S A ‘LEARNING ISSUE’

When 13-year-old Jada Williams was given a copy of Frederick Douglass’ book “The Narrative Life of Frederick Douglass,” she was inspired. So inspired that she decided to write an essay that drew a parallel between the abhorrent illiteracy in city schools and slavery. And she took aim at her teachers.

But that, apparently, is where she went wrong. The teacher took exception to the essay — which was supposed to be for a contest but was never submitted — and even confronted her. And according to her mother, that started a chain of hostility by the school — located in Rochester, NY — which eventually forced the mother to remove Jada from the school.

“My advice to my peers, people of color, and my generation, start making these white teachers accountable for instructing you,” Jada wrote. “They tooled this profession, they brag about their credentials, they brag about their tenure, so if you have so much experience then find a more productive way to teach the so called ‘unteachable.’”

Wear Blue to Raise Awareness about Colon Cancer

Salisbury, MD – The Wicomico County Health Department is encouraging residents to observe National Dress In Blue Day on Friday, March 2nd as part of National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Dress in Blue Day takes place on the first Friday in March and encourages individuals, businesses and community groups to wear blue clothing and talk to each other about the importance of colon cancer screenings.

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the country. “Everyone age 50 or older should talk with their doctor about being screened,” said Lori Brewster, Health Officer for Wicomico County. Wedding Industry Readies For Md. Same-Sex Marriage

WASHINGTON - The announcements went out last week, and the setting has been arranged: Maryland's same-sex marriage bill will become law in a signing ceremony Thursday.

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, who sponsored the bill, will do the honors at the State House at 5 p.m.

The law will take effect in January 2013 -- unless it fails in a likely referendum in November -- and business owners like Tracy Callahan of Bethesda Florist are ready.

He saw an immediate spike in business after the District of Columbia legalized same-sex marriages.

"Right off the bat, we had about six or seven weddings," he says.

Wedding planners also saw business increase.

Energy Secretary Chu: Administration OK With High Gas Prices

President Barack Obama's Secretary of Energy Stephen Chu uttered the kind of Washington gaffe that consists of telling the truth when inconvenient. According to Politico, Chu admitted to a House committee that the administration is not interested in lowering gas prices.

Chu, along with the Obama administration, regards the spike in gas prices as a feature rather than a bug. High gas prices provide an incentive for alternate energy technology, a priority for the White House, and a decrease in reliance on oil for energy.

The Heritage Foundation points out that hammering the American consumer with high gas prices to make electric and hybrid cars more appealing is consistent with Obama administration policy and Chu's philosophy. That explains the refusal to allow the building of the Keystone XL pipeline and to allow drilling in wide areas of the U.S. and offshore areas.

Arpaio Investigates Obama's Birth Certificate

PHOENIX (AP) - America's self-proclaimed toughest sheriff finds himself entangled these days in his own thorny legal troubles: a federal grand jury probe over alleged abuse of power, Justice Department accusations of racial profiling and revelations that his department didn't adequately investigate hundreds of Arizona sex-crime cases.

Rather than seek cover, though, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is seeking to grab the spotlight in the same unorthodox fashion that has helped boost his career as a nationally known lawman.

Arpaio scheduled a news conference Thursday to unveil preliminary results of an investigation, conducted by members of his volunteer cold-case posse, into the authenticity of President Barack Obama's birth certificate, a controversy that has been widely debunked but which remains alive in the eyes of some conservatives. Last year, Donald Trump most prominently revived the issue while entertaining a possible bid for the presidency.

Judge blocks part of Arizona immigration law

PHOENIX (Reuters) - A federal judge blocked Arizona on Wednesday from enforcing a part of its immigration law that prohibits occupants of vehicles from stopping traffic to pick up day laborers.

In a preliminary injunction, U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton ruled that plaintiffs seeking to overturn the law were "likely to succeed on the merits of their claim" that the rules violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

"Plaintiffs have also shown that they are likely to suffer irreparable harm in the absence of an injunction ... and that the public interest favors injunctive relief," Bolton said in the ruling.

Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed the state's tough immigration law in April 2010, seeking to clamp down on illegal immigrants in the Mexico border state.

Something is Wrong when a U.S. Soldier Costs $1 Million a Year

According to CNN, the Pentagon comptroller said during a congressional budgetmeeting that it cost "about $850,000 per soldier" per year in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments reached a more expensive conclusion: $1.2 million per soldier per year. The estimate is supposed to increase for 2012.

The Pentagon comptroller, Department of Defense undersecretary Robert Hale, said higher weapons operating costs were "a good part that's probably 50 percent of the budget" when explaining the $850,000 per-soldier statistic.

Something is wrong when the U.S. is spending around $1 million per soldier per year to fight in Afghanistan. It's more wrong when we're getting "probably" and "a good part" and other ambiguous terminology. While I'm struggling to pay my rent on a public school teacher's salary, I want to know why the Department of Defense lacks hard-and-fast figures on its overseas spending.

U.S. Lawmakers Challenge Iran to Spare a Christian Pastor’s Life

(CNSNews.com) –The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday will take up a bipartisan resolution calling on Iran to spare the life of an Iranian Christian pastor sentenced to death for “apostasy.”

Sponsored by a conservative Christian Republican and a liberal Muslim Democrat, the list of bipartisan co-sponsors for the resolution – introduced on Feb. 17 by Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) -- has climbed to 46.

The resolution condemns the Iranian government for the “state-sponsored persecution of religious minorities” in violation of international covenants, and it calls on Iran “to exonerate and immediately and unconditionally release Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani and all other individuals held or charged on account of their religious or political beliefs.”

Sex-Crazed Co-Eds Going Broke Buying Birth Control, Student Tells Pelosi Hearing Touting Freebie Mandate

A Georgetown co-ed told Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s hearing that the women in her law school program are having so much sex that they’re going broke, so you and I should pay for their birth control.

Speaking at a hearing held by Pelosi to tout Pres. Obama’s mandate that virtually every health insurance plan cover the full cost of contraception and abortion-inducing products, Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke said that it’s too expensive to have sex in law school without mandated insurance coverage.

Apparently, four out of every ten co-eds are having so much sex that it's hard to make ends meet if they have to pay for their own contraception, Fluke's research shows.

A Letter To The Editor 3-1-12

Joe,

I know your passion for Sex Offender Laws here in Md. But at the same time we must not allow our hearts to build and lead our fears. And allow laws to be written hastily and pushed through the system to give the public a false sense of security , when in fact it does nothing to protect the public other than gaining votes for those who pushed the hastily written bills to laws. We all know we need laws in our country ,but at the same time the laws needs to be fair and just and have meaning and bring proper justice for all. As we all know the Md.'s Sex Offenders List is flawed badly and is growing in record numbers and the cost of running the complete program in Md. is raising just as fast. Sooner or later the budget will crash and where will it end and how will it effect the Sex Offender Program. The list is growing to the point that we no longer know who the real threats are to the public and some are on it for life with no way off of it. That to me is crazy and amounts to a death penatly and causes the list to grow even larger and takes up law enforcement time to register them every three months and the time to visit their homes for life and that could be 10-70 years of work per registrant that could be cleared if those on it for life be allowed at some point to go in front of a board and prove they are no longer a threat and be pulled off the list.Even is this is not a option, maybe after a x-amount of years of no new convictions of any type these on for life could be pulled off the public access list and be put on a Law Enforcement only list to allow the more recent offenders to be tracked better. This would free up Law Enforcement time to track and watch those who are a more recent and possible threat to the public.

One of the biggest myths that is told to the public to keep them scared and to back any new Sex Offender Laws is the so-called recidivism rate of sex offenders. Well studies have been done in many states and with the d.o.j. to prove that this is not the case and in fact the recidivism rate for sex offenders is well under many if not most other offenders.This myth needs to be researched here in Md. and the truth be told to the public and then maybe the right changes can be done regarding not only sex offender laws , but changes to the sex offender list so the public can be properly informed and not just giving a false sense of security as they asre now being giving at a high cost to taxpayers in Maryland.
