Sinclair Broadcasting Group, America’s largest television station owner, announced Friday that they will join a slew of other large U.S. companies in using the savings from the just-passed Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to give employees bonuses.
Almost 9,000 Sinclair employees will get $1000 bonuses, according to an accompanying press release.
“We are grateful to our President and legislature for passing the landmark Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and are excited about the benefits it will provide for our country’s economy, our Company, and our employees,” Sinclair Broadcasting President and CEO Chris Ripley said in the press release. “We recognize that our employees are our most valuable resource, truly appreciate their combined achievements for our Company and look forward to a very bright future.”
Sinclair has become something of a bogeyman to the left-leaning press over reports some of its owners and managers are supporters of President Donald Trump and are choosing to broadcast content not sufficiently critical of the administration. New York Magazine’s Gabriel Sherman, for example, has sounded the alarm this summer that “Sinclair really wants to build the future of a conservative media empire” as they entered talks with ousted conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly.

Sattler College will, instead, focus on three c’s: core academics, Christian character and keeping education costs down.
Boston-area businessman Finny Kuruvilla, who founded Sattler, appeared on "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday to preview the new school.
“The modern educational system is too expensive, it’s academically weak and it’s hostile to faith,” Kuruvilla said. “These institutions are very resistant to change, and so we decided to create our own college in Boston, Massachusetts.”

Religious Group Brings 5,600 Immigrants to Israel in 2017
In 2017, the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews facilitated the immigration of 5,600 immigrants from 27 countries to Israel, a 25-percent increase from its 2016 numbers, according to a press release reported in The Jerusalem Post.

9 Year-Old Points Pellet Gun at Suspect’s Head, Stops Alleged Carjacking
According to WTHR, Kevin Cooksey pulled up to the One Stop Express and went inside, but he left his son, Larry Larimore, in the truck with the vehicle running. Looking at the truck from inside the store, Cooksey noticed that his door had been opened and became nervous. He said, “When I saw my truck door open, I was like, ‘oh my God, what am I going to tell my wife?’”
It turns out that a man allegedly attempting to steal the vehicle opened Cooksey’s door, but the theft was stopped when young Larimore pulled his BB gun and pointed it at the suspect’s head..

Four Ohio teens charged with murder of man hit by sandbag
Four teenage boys have been charged with murder in an Ohio juvenile court in connection with the death of a man struck by a sandbag thrown from an interstate overpass.
Prosecutors filed the charges Tuesday in Toledo against the boys, ages 13 to 15,The Toledo Blade reported.
The teens initially were charged with the juvenile equivalent of felonious assault.

Time to update records, check accounts and make notifications
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - As tax filing season approaches, the Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers that there are things they should do now to get ready for filing season. Here are some tips to get ready:
For most taxpayers, Dec. 31 is the last day to take actions that will affect their 2017 tax returns. For example, charitable contributions are deductible in the year made. Donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2017 count for the 2017 tax year, even if the bill isn't paid until 2018. Checks to a charity count for 2017 as long as they are mailed by the last day of the year.
Taxpayers over age 70 ½ are generally required to receive payments from their individual retirement accounts and workplace retirement plans by the end of 2017, though a special rule allows those who reached 70 ½ in 2017 to wait until April 1, 2018, to receive them.
Most workplace retirement account contributions should be made by the end of the year, but taxpayers can make 2017 IRA contributions until April 18, 2018. For 2018, the limit for a 401(k) is $18,500. For traditional and Roth IRAs, the limit is $6,500 if age 50 or older and up to $15,500 for a Simple IRA for age 50 or older.
Taxpayers should be careful not to count on getting a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying other financial obligations.
Taxpayers who have moved should tell the U.S. Postal Service, employers and the IRS. To notify the IRS, mail IRS Form 8822, Change of Address, to the address listed on the form’s instructions.
For name changes due to marriage or divorce, notify the Social Security Administration so the new name will match IRS and SSA records. Also notify the SSA if a dependent's name changed. A mismatch between the name shown on your tax return and the SSA records can cause problems in the processing of a return and may even delay a refund.
Some refunds cannot be issued before mid-February. By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards starting on Feb 27, 2018, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.
Some Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers must be renewed. Any Individual Taxpayer Identification Number not used on a tax return at least once in the past three years will expire on December 31, 2017. Additionally, all ITINs issued before 2013 with middle digits of 70, 71, 72 or 80 (Example: 9XX-70-XXXX) will also expire at the end of the year. As a reminder, ITINs with middle digits 78 and 79 that expired in 2016 can also be renewed. Only taxpayers who need to file a U.S. federal tax return or are claiming a refund in 2018 must renew their expired ITINs. Affected ITIN holders can avoid delays by starting the renewal process now.

Coast Guard medevacs man from bulk carrier near Annapolis, Md.
BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard medevaced a 41-year-old crewmember from the bulk carrier Kang Hong in the Annapolis anchorage Tuesday.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region command center received a report from the ship stating a crewmember was experiencing stroke-like symptoms.
Sector MNCR watchstanders launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Annapolis to respond. Two paramedics from Anne Arundel County Fire Department accompanied the RBM crew.
The crewmember was removed from the ship and transported back to Station Annapolis, where he was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center via ambulance.
"The communication and cooperation between our fellow life-saving agencies in cases like this one helped us conduct a timely response,” said Seaman Colt Coffman, coxswain for the case. “The vessel also maintained good radio communication on Channel 16, which kept us well aware of their location and the situation throughout the medevac.”

Norfolk CBP Officers Recover Stolen Vehicles Headed to Africa
NORFOLK, VA— As 2017 comes to an end, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers assigned to the Outbound Enforcement Team at the Port of Norfolk intercepted and recovered nine stolen vehicles bound for Africa since December 1st.
The vehicles were all to be exported from the Norfolk seaport with a majority destined for West African countries. The stolen autos recovered included a variety of high priced makes and models such as a 2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2017 Infinity QX80 and a 2018 Mercedes GLE. Since October 1, the CBP Norfolk Outbound team seized a total of 16 vehicles making the overall value of the stolen automobiles in three months over $691,000 dollars.
“We work with various federal, state and local law enforcement authorities to ensure unauthorized exports are not allowed to leave the country,” said Mark J. Laria, CBP Area Port Director. “CBP is the last line of defense in the export control process, and we do use our authority to inspect, search, detain and seize goods being exported illegally or without proper authorization.”
The recovered vehicles will be turned over to Virginia State Police Special Agents who will return the vehicles to their rightful owners.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:20 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2017, in the 21000 block of Acorn Way, Oakwood Village at Lewes, as a suspect was observed running up to a front porch, removing packages, and then fleeing in a white Kia Optima. Through investigative measures, the suspect identified as 55-year-old Mary E. Murphyof Lewes was arrested on Felony Theft, Theft, Tampering With Physical Evidence, Falsifying Business Records, Hindering Prosecution, Conspiracy 3rd, Criminal Mischief, and two counts of Criminal Trespass 3rd. Murphy was arraigned out of Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released on $3351.00 unsecured bond.
The second suspect in this case has been identified as 32-year-old Derek J. Rice of Lewes. Through investigative measures, it was discovered on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 that Rice was at Murphy's residence located in the 22000 block of Dogwood Lane, Angola by the Bay. As Troopers approached the residence, Rice attempted to flee and was subsequently taken into custody without further incident. Rice was arrested on Felony Theft, Tampering With Physical Evidence, Theft, Falsifying Business Records, Hindering Prosecution, Conspiracy 3rd, Criminal Mischief, and two counts of Criminal Trespass 3rd. Rice was arraigned out of Sussex County Court of Common Pleas and released on $3450.00 unsecured bond.

Pittsville’s Beloved Christmas Display Ending 20-Year Run
Since the 1990s, homeowners Bill and Ginger Morrison have welcomed community members onto their Parker Place property each Christmas for a free, walk-through holiday display that features lights, decorations, figurines, hot chocolate, popcorn and appearances by Santa.
While the number of lights and visitors has grown over the years, the homeowners have announced that this year’s display – known to many as Christmas at Parker Place – would be its last.
Bill said he and his wife purchased their Pittsville home in 1990 and for the first few years would string lights around the windows, banisters and other outdoor areas. All of that changed, however, soon after the family took a trip to Disney in the mid-1990s.

The article cited investigative reports on a lawyer who allegedly groped two female attorneys and a top U.S. Marshals official who had sex with “approximately” nine women in his office.
Though fresh complaints have been filed as recently as August, the IG said some of the worst alleged offenses happened several years ago in the department’s Civil Division.
Ian Prior, a spokesman in the Trump Justice Department, would not comment in detail about the allegations but described the problems as largely occurring during the prior administration.

At some point, neighbors heard her screams and came to her aid. Her attacker – described as a Somali man in his early 20s, about 5-foot-7 with a slight build and wearing grey stone-washed jeans – fled.

1. The federal government pays its disclosed workforce $1 million per minute, $66 million per hour, and $524 million per day. In FY2016, the federal government disclosed 1.97 million employees at a cash compensation cost of $136.3 billion.
2. Over a six-year period (FY2010-2016), the number of federal employees making $200,000 or more has increased by 165 percent; those making $150,000 or more has grown by 60 percent; and those making more than $100,000 has increased by 37 percent.
3. On average, federal employees are given 10 federal holidays, 13 sick days, and 20 vacation days per year.If each employee used 13 sick days and took 20 vacation days in addition to the 10 federal holidays, it would cost taxpayers an estimated $22.6 billion annually.

5 arrests after up to 1,000 teenagers and juveniles cause disruption at Cherry Hill Mall
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (WPVI) -- Police say up to 1,000 juveniles were causing a disruption at the Cherry Hill Mall on Tuesday night leading to some arrests.
The incident began around 7:30 p.m. at the JC Penney entrance of the mall located on Route 38.
Arriving officers found approximately 700 to 1,000 unaccompanied juveniles at the mall.
Shoppers described the chaos:
"I was scared just because there were so many and they were unsupervised," said Daija Qualis. "It looked like a hostile situation."

Maryland State Trooper Breaks Record For Number Of DUI Arrests
(PIKESVILLE, MD) – A trooper has made Maryland State Police history by breaking the record for the number of DUI arrests made in a year.
For the past four years, Trooper First Class Anthony Wallace has made at least 100 DUI arrests each year, thus breaking a statewide record for the Maryland State Police. Prior to 2017, TFC Wallace and one other trooper on the SPIDRE team were the only ones who had surpassed 100 DUI arrests for three consecutive years.
While working targeted enforcement with the SPIDRE team this past weekend, TFC Wallace made his 100th DUI arrest for the year in Baltimore County and he is on point to make more as the New Year approaches. TFC Wallace makes on average, 120 to 140 impaired driving arrests annually as a member of the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort, or SPIDRE team.
After graduating in the 140th Maryland State Police Academy Class in December 2013, TFC Wallace was assigned as a road patrol trooper to the Golden Ring Barrack where he quickly demonstrated his ability to locate impaired drivers on Maryland roads. Within his first six months, he was recruited by the SPIDRE team, an elite team of state troopers focused on reducing the number of alcohol related crashes in Maryland.
Funded by the Maryland Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Highway Safety Office, the SPIDRE team was the first of its kind on the east coast and has proven to be extremely effective. The team is deployed in areas of Maryland with high crash rates involving impaired drivers. The goal is simple – to find and arrest alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers before they cause crashes. To date, the team has been responsible for more than 7,600 traffic stops, resulting in over 2,500 DUI arrests since inception in May 2013.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh is shifting the violence prevention program from the supervision of the Health Department to be run directly out of her Office of Criminal Justice.
Safe Streets is not a law enforcement effort. Calling themselves violence interrupters, Baltimore's Safe Streets workers try to de-escalate incidents in four city neighborhoods before violence erupts. They follow a public health model and have long operated under the Health Department, but soon they'll be under the control of the mayor's office.
"We are going to be very careful about how we roll the program out because we believe the model does work and we are not trying to change the model," Pugh said.

There are still at least six weeks to go before the public unveiling of the federal budget for 2019, but the Navy is already sending strong signals that it’s planning for the sort of personnel growth it might need in order to eventually field a fleet of 350 ships and to fill the manning shortfalls it has today.
Over the last two weeks, the service has pushed out several policy changes designed to hold onto as many of its existing sailors as possible, reversing programs that culled personnel from its ranks in prior years.
In one of the changes, the Navy told sailors last week that it was relaxing previous rules under which servicemembers could be kicked out by reason of physical fitness. The service ordered commands to put a stop to any actions they’ve taken to separate sailors simply because they’ve failed the Navy’s physical fitness assessment (PFA), a twice-a-year screening process that combines medical checkups with the Navy’s physical readiness test and body fat limits.
Instead, those servicemembers will be allowed to fail the PFA at least twice. Although they will be ineligible for promotions until they pass a PFA, they will continue to serve until they’ve lived up to their previously-agreed-on military service obligations.

Voting-rights activists have long accused GOP officeholders of racism or political expedience in fights over voting laws, but the study suggests that at least for average voters, Republicans’ support is a good-faith assessment of dangers they see in illegal voting.
Republicans respond to even small reports of voter fraud, seeing them as a reason to back stricter voting access, according to the research by John V. Kane, a professor at New York University, whose study was published in the latest Public Opinion Quarterly.
Democrats, meanwhile, generally support voter-ID but their support is less firm. If told the GOP would suffer from stricter voter-ID laws, Democrats become more supportive, Mr. Kane found.
“There’s different concerns in both camps. Republicans really do appear to be super-concerned about fraud and Democrats not so much. Democrats really appear to be concerned about the electoral implications, not so much fraud,” Mr. Kane told The Washington Times.

A Vanity Fair video suggesting that Hillary Clinton should “take up a new hobby” for 2018 has sparked liberal outrage on Twitter.
In the video posted over the weekend, Vanity Fair writer Maya Kosoff recommended that the failed Democratic presidential nominee take up “volunteer work, knitting, improv comedy,” or anything that doesn’t include running for office again.
The seemingly lighthearted video received only 800 re-tweets, compared to a whopping 7,000 responses. It was panned by Clinton supporters as sexist and demeaning, spurring the hashtag #CancelVanityFair.

Governor Larry Hogan announced more improvements to the Vehicle Emissions Inspections Program Friday.
New improvements to the program would extend the amount of time before owners of new vehicles must get a new inspection, and eliminate the requirement for pre-1996 light-duty vehicles.
Effective January 1, 2018, owners of new vehicles will not have to get their vehicles tested for 3 years instead of 2. This is expected to save residents more than $2 million a year.
Also, the inspection requirement will be eliminated altogether for all pre-1996 light-duty vehicles. That means 24,000 drivers will now be exempt.

It's one of some 300 mosques and prayer rooms serving 700,000 Muslims who live in Austria and who've enjoyed the same rights as Christians and Jews since Islam was made an official religion there in 1912.
A few mosques, like Vienna's Islamic Center, even have a minaret. But they are silent these days, a metaphor of sorts for the low profile many Muslims are keeping because they no longer feel welcome in Austria. One of the worshipers at Schura Mosque on a recent Friday was Viennese Councilman Omar al-Rawi. He said Muslim asylum-seekers are especially afraid to enter mosques nowadays.
"They say, 'We won't go to pray because maybe they will think we are radicals so it's better not to pray'" until their refugee status is approved, he explains.

Man killed after being hit during a Florida softball game
A newlywed died on Sunday, two weeks after he was taken to the hospital because he was hit in the head with a softball.
Greg Fusco, from Palm Harbor, Florida, was struck in the left temple by a line drive while he was pitching during a softball tournament near Jacksonville on December 2, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
The 37-year-old softball fanatic was first knocked out by the hit, but regained consciousness before an ambulance arrived.
Nevertheless he was airlifted to the University of Florida Health Jacksonville for what doctors first thought would be non-life-threatening injuries.

That means, he said, they are out of the classroom while sick or on “personal leave” at least 10 days for each 180-day school year.
Hawaiian schools have the worst problem, with a “staggering 79 percent” of teachers are chronically absent, he said.
In Florida, it’s 40 percent and in Nevada 50 percent.

The IRS has received a number of questions from the tax community concerning the deductibility of prepaid real property taxes. In general, whether a taxpayer is allowed a deduction for the prepayment of state or local real property taxes in 2017 depends on whether the taxpayer makes the payment in 2017 and the real property taxes are assessed prior to 2018. A prepayment of anticipated real property taxes that have not been assessed prior to 2018 are not deductible in 2017. State or local law determines whether and when a property tax is assessed, which is generally when the taxpayer becomes liable for the property tax imposed.
The following examples illustrate these points.
Example 1: Assume County A assesses property tax on July 1, 2017 for the period July 1, 2017 – June 30, 2018. Texas teen shot dead trying to sell marijuana
A 17-year-old Texas high school student was shot and killed while trying to sell marijuana to two suspects on Christmas Eve, police said.
The incident took place shortly after 9pm on Sunday when officers with the Irving Police Department responded to a shooting report in the 200 block of Red River Trail.
Arriving at the scene, the cops found 17-year-old Brett Adkins, of Plano, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the left chest.

Bar Drinks
A union boss walks into a crowded bar next to the factory and is about to order himself a drink, when he sees a guy close by wearing a "Make America Great Again" cap and a TRUMP for President button, and a beer in front of him. He doesn't have to be an Einstein to know that this guy is a Republican.
So, he shouts over to the bartender so loudly that everyone can hear, "Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, but not for the Republican."
Soon after the drinks have been handed out, the Republican gives him a big smile, waves at him then says, "Thank you!" in an equally loud voice.
This infuriates the union boss.
Later, the union boss once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Republican. As before, this doesn't seem to bother the Republican.
He continues to smile and again yells, "Thank you!"
The union boss says to himself, "Damn Republican!"

Viktor Orbán has used his annual Christmas message to call on Europeans to protect their Christian culture, and vowed Hungary will not “retreat behind concrete blocks” at Christmas and watched its women and daughters “harassed in the New Year’s Eve crowd” like its multicultural neighbours.
“Christianity is culture and civilization. We live in it. It is not about how many people go to church or how many pray honestly. Culture is the reality of everyday life… Christian culture defines our everyday morals,” wrote the Fidesz leader, in an article published in Magyar Idők.
