Traffic On Chesapeake Bay Bridge Reopens After Earlier Fire

WASHINGTON - Lanes reopen in both directions on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge after an earlier fire caused traffic to stop Sunday evening.

WTOP has received reports that construction materials are burning underneath the bridge, sending a plume of smoke into the sky.

A Maryland Transportation Authority official said she had no information about what caused the fire or what was burning.

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE MOCKS OBAMACARE IN HILARIOUS SKIT

(Editor’s note: The video contains some mature content)
Late night comedy show Saturday Night Live turned the tables on President Barack Obama and devoted an entire skit last night aimed at mocking his signature healthcare law.

The roughly seven-minute skit depicted an actor playing the president delivering a speech dedicated to showcasing the supposed benefits of the healthcare law.

However, as individuals were called up one-by-one to testify in favor of Obamacare, they instead delivered some surprising news.

America’s Largest Gun Shop Abruptly Dropped By Credit Card Co. – And The Reason Will Have You Shaking Your Head In Disbelief

The Hyatt Gun Shop of Charlotte, N.C., has been doing business for the last four years with a subsidiary of Visa — a key Obama campaign donor — that specializes in credit card transactions.
But the subsidiary, Authorize.net/CyberSource, reportedly has ended its relationship with the nation’s largest gun store for a reason that might get you scratching your head.

Because the Hyatt Gun Shop sells, well, guns.

The Authorize.net email said that gun sales violated a section of the service agreement it signed with the gun shop, reportedly after Hyatt detailed its sales and products — and, you know, its name – according to the Washington Examiner.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Justin Anderson, Hyatt’s marketing director, who added it took a week and thousands of dollars to line up a “gun friendly” credit card processor for online sales.

More from the Examiner:
The brushoff of Hyatt’s business has sparked a national boycott effort against Authorize.net and parent company CyberSource organized by the website Grass Roots North Carolina. “It looks like the small but noisy anti-gun crowd has gotten to what must be a jelly-spined PR department at CyberSource and Authorize.Net. Either that, or leadership at these companies have simply become anti-gun all on their own,” said the website in announcing the boycott.

Anderson suspects that the company, purchased by Visa in 2010, got cold feet dealing with a leading gun seller and he said that he’s heard of other gun stores being dropped. The company had no immediate comment.

Muslims: We Want Schools Closed On Our Holidays

Muslims in Montgomery County, Md., are petitioning local school officials to add two Islamic holidays that vary from year to year to the school calendar, and if needed, to shorten the “winter break” to make up for the days off.

“There is no need for any MCPS students to miss classroom instruction time if schools were to close for Eid holidays,” their petition argues. “There is a state law that mandates at least 180 classroom instruction days per year. That won’t change. If schools were to close on Eid holidays the missed days could easily be made up by slightly shortening the lengthy winter or summer breaks.

Shhhhh!!!!! There's A Town Election No One In PITTSVILLE Wants You To Know About

You know, if Paul Wilbur was an HONORABLE man he'd EXPOSE the alleged embezzlement BEFORE the Town of Pittsville held their next election.

On the other hand, Wilbur is a LAWYER, sorry for such a far reach.

Here's the deal. There's some serious problems in Pittsville right now and quite frankly the taxpayers are getting screwed. You have a majority of firefighters on the Council and that just needs to end. There's nothing wrong with one representative but we all know what might happen if you had, oh, let's say your DAUGHTER running the books and Daddy closing BOTH eyes and signing off on a two party check time and time again.

However, Pittsville is one of those Towns very similar to Salisbury where the citizens want to bitch and complain but they don't get off their rear ends to volunteer to run and or vote.

Then we heard from a citizen who called Town Hall to ask where the election is being published. Their reply was, we'll be posting it around Town, (image above) and in the Daily Times. That citizen was furious because with the 15 homes on their block, only TWO get the Daily Times. HOW CONVENIENT AGAIN! They, (of course) didn't send anything to Salisbury News because they know everyone reads us.

They don't want you to know about this election. They don't want new candidates stepping up to the plate to compete. In fact, we at Salisbury News can't wait for this election to be over so we can publish the fact that we have another Washington, D.C. right here on the Eastern Shore where the citizens are so dumb they voted another Marion Barry back into office.

I can see the hits going through the roof now. Well here's what I can tell you. Salisbury News is by far the most read new source on the entire Eastern Shore, hands down. I couldn't care less how many homes get the Daily Times, they're a joke any more and people should be laughing at their neighbors every morning when they go out to pick up that piece of junk someone just paid all that money to read in 5 minutes.

Pittsville, you are the center of attention right now. MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES and get that Town back in order before it goes bankrupt.

Shutdown Impact: Tourists, Homebuyers Hit Quickly

If the government "shuts down" next Tuesday, your mail will still come. Doctors will see Medicare patients. NASA will keep talking to the astronauts circling Earth on the Space Station. In fact, the majority of government will remain on the job.

The closings would hit random Americans first: vacationers hoping to take in Mount Rushmore or a Smithsonian museum. Homebuyers seeking government-backed mortgages. Veterans appealing the denial of disability benefits. Perhaps on the bright side -- for some -- tax audits would be suspended.

Troubles would spread the longer a shutdown lasted.

POLLITT ANNOUNCES NEW EQUIPMENT TO REPAIR WICOMICO COUNTY ROADS

Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt and Department of Public Works – Roads Division crews unveiled new equipment to help preserve county roads and make them safer for the traveling public.

The new aggregate recyclers allow County crews to more effectively and economically fill potholes using hot mix asphalt. The equipment keeps the asphalt at an appropriate temperature to settle and bond to the surface, allowing for permanent, pothole repair.

“We can install a permanent pavement repair any season of the year, thereby reducing the need to continually maintain a temporary repair in the winter when hot mix is not available,” said Lee Beauchamp - Director of Public Works, “This also saves the County in trucking costs to deliver small batches of asphalt from the plant. It’s like having a mobile asphalt plant available all year long.”

County Executive Pollitt commented, “This machine allows us to take the rubble from old roads, heat it up, mix it up and turn it into a strong, solid patching material for repairs. It recycles old materials, extends the life of our County roads and saves the taxpayers money in the process. It’s a good deal all around.”

Previously, crews used a “cold patch” – a temporary fix that required routine maintenance. The cost of cold mix asphalt was approximately $125 per ton. The new equipment will allow the department to produce its own quality hot mix from leftover asphalt millings at a fraction of the costs and also allows crews to repair more potholes each day.

To report a pothole on County roads, please contact the Roads Division at 410-548-4872.

Gun-Rights Activists Sue Maryland To Block New Firearms Law

Gun-rights activists in Maryland have filed a federal lawsuit to block the state's new gun law before new requirements on assault weapons and large magazines go into effect Oct. 1.

In the lawsuit in filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Maryland, the plaintiffs argues the the Second Amendment and case law protect their right to own assault rifles and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The plaintiffs include the Maryland Licensed Firearms Dealers Association, the Maryland State Rifle and Pistol Association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Associated Gun Clubs of Baltimore, and several other organizations, individuals and gun shops, according to the report.

Maryland State Police In A Jam For The Next Seven Years

If your considering joining the Maryland State Police, get very used to their current salaries because Governor O'Malley has frozen them for the next seven years.

Not only that, in Salisbury many Officers are driving around in vehicles with 250,000 + miles on them and there's no relief in sight for new vehicles since O'Malley refuses to be proactive.

There are more of us who want you than those who don't! Thank You Lord, I Love You.

Maryland Could Lose $5 Million A Day In Tax Revenue From Federal Shutdown, Memo Says

Furloughs of federal workers during a government shutdown could cost Maryland $5 million a day in income and sales tax collections and hinder the state’s economic recovery, according to a memo circulating in the office of Gov. Martin O’Malley (D).

Federal employment is a key component of Maryland’s economy, with annual wages totaling about $25 billion, according to the memo, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post. It was prepared by O’Malley’s budget advisers in preparation of a congressional budget stalemate continuing into next week.

Officials say the park has a responsibility to make that land available for citizens to exercise their right to freedom of speech, even if the views expressed are contrary to those of most Americans.

‘TRULY AMAZING’: HERE’S WHAT ENDED UP HAPPENING WITH KIRK CAMERON’S NEW MOVIE ABOUT GOD, SUFFERING AND THE BIBLE

Actor and producer Kirk Cameron’s one-night only showing of “Unstoppable” lived up to its name earlier this week when the documentary, which was shown in 700 theaters across the nation, brought in a stunning $2 million in sales.

When the numbers are officially in and solidified, the film will likely rank first or second for Tuesday night revenue, either beating — or coming close to — Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal’s new movie, “Prisoner.”

By all accounts, the faith-based documentary was a major success. And Cameron excitedly conveyed this sentiment to TheBlaze this week.

Court Rules On Right To Attorney At Bail Hearings

Maryland's highest court ruled on Wednesday that poor defendants are entitled to have an attorney present at bail hearings.

The 4-3 ruling marked the second time the Maryland Court of Appeals decided that defendants are entitled to state-furnished counsel at those initial hearings before a district court commissioner, because the defendant's liberty is at stake. The judges in the majority noted that suspects, unless released on their own recognizance, will remain incarcerated until a bail review hearing before a judge. That can take days in some cases.

"As numerous briefs to this court pointed out, the failure of a commissioner to consider all the facts relevant to a bail determination can have devastating effects on the arrested individuals," the judges wrote in the majority decision.

Wicomico Oversteps Boundaries

The Wicomico County Board of Education recently sent a letter to area homeschool families that misquoted and misapplied the Maryland homeschool regulations and made improper demands.

The letter referred to the annual verification incorrectly as a “notice of continuation,” and asked families to submit their verification on a form when no form is required. The letter also asked families to submit the verification and any change of status to the school system, even though families in umbrella programs are required to submit these only to their umbrella program—not the school system.

The letter asked families to submit “proof of enrollment” in an umbrella program, but there is no such requirement under the Maryland homeschool regulations. The form enclosed in the letter sought to obtain a great deal of information from families that they are not required to submit.

HSLDA Senior Counsel Scott A. Woodruff faxed a response to the board of education and asked the author to send a letter of correction to homeschool families. Woodruff’s response, which includes a complete analysis of the many ways the letter and form overstepped the boundaries of the Maryland homeschool regulations, can be read here.

School Official Tells Students Trayvon Martin Case Proved It Is 'Legal To Hunt' Children

An email sent to students by a University of Maryland official that cites the Trayvon Martin shooting as evidence "it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida" is being blasted as the latest evidence of a left-wing bias on campus.

The email, from William Dorland, director of the school's Honors College, starts by welcoming students back to campus, but then quickly veers into politics.

"This year, we learned that it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida," it reads, in a reference to the trial of George Zimmerman, who was cleared of all charges in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. The email went out to all students in the Honors College.

Be Careful Of Rabid Fox

Thought you might want to post a note on your blog --- my son told me he saw a red tailed fox in our back yard yesterday afternoon exhibiting typical rabid animal symptoms --- erratic behavior and movement, snapping & pacing in circles, running 5-6 steps to the left, then running to the right in the same manner. All this done in the open, in broad daylight (foxes rarely run around in the open for very long). He went to get one of my rifles to kill it, but it ran back into the woods. I live next to the golf course in Delmar.

A Letter To The Editor: PRMC 9-26-13

Those who would have us believe Peninsula Regional Medical Center’s current problems are due to Obamacare are trying to deflect our attention from the real culprits: the current and former PRMC executives who created this mess by continually expanding inpatient capacity while ignoring the changes that were taking place in health care.

Members of the hospital board who allowed themselves to be fooled by fancy Powerpoint presentations must share the blame.

It’s not as though they didn’t have other hospitals which might have served as models. Western Maryland Health Systems in Cumberland, which serves a population similar to ours and operates under the same cost constraints, is thriving because its leaders had the foresight to anticipate the direction health care was moving.

Rather than constructing a grander and grander building at exorbitant cost to the community, Western Maryland has “taken services outside its walls,” according to Eduardo Porter in The New York Times on Aug. 27. In the last three years, it has opened a diabetes clinic, a wound center and a behavioral health center, all at pre-existing remote locations around the area. It also provides in-home follow-up care for older and sicker patients, so there have been fewer re-admissions due to complications.

The result of this forward thinking has been a $15 million profit for the fiscal year which ended in June.

What a contrast to our local hospital. Despite more and more highly paid administrators and planners — CEO, CFO, COO and vice presidents for planning, human resources, facilities management and more — these leaders keep feeding their egos and purses by continually expanding PRMC’s downtown palace. It reminds me of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

Now the community must pay. As a former employee of 27 years, it makes me sick.

Safety Without Speed Limits?

Moving over to allow faster-moving traffic to get by is a wonderful concept. But I’d take it a step farther: If you’re not passing, you should not be in the left lane at all.

That, at any rate, is the way it’s done in Germany. There is a reason why. It is called closing speed. If a Porsche turbo doing 140 is bearing down on a Fiat 500 doing 70, the Fiat driver had better notice the headlights getting much larger, much faster in his rearview – and get the hell out of the way in time.

Which he usually does. Which is why the German Autobahn is a safer place – without speed limits – than U.S. highways are with speed limits.

German drivers are taught to use the passing lane only to pass. They don’t set the cruise control and zone out or gabble on their cell phones like so many American drivers unfortunately do. Instead, they use scan their rearview and side mirrors so that they are always aware of the ebb and flow of traffic around them. They anticipate the need to yield to a faster-moving vehicle such that the faster moving vehicle’s driver does not have to abruptly slow then maneuver to get around a dawdler. Traffic thus flows. And, high-speed traffic can mingle with lower-speed traffic safely.

In advance of the signing, a State Department official said the treaty would "reduce the risk that international transfers of conventional arms will be used to carry out the world's worst crimes," while protecting gun rights.

"The treaty builds on decades of cooperative efforts to stem the international, illegal, and illicit trade in conventional weapons that benefits terrorists and rogue agents," the official said.

Interesting comment by Mr. Outten about the "missing" MDE obligation. Wonder what the elusive funding obligations are that MDE is promising Fruitland if they serve water to the residential areas with the tainted wells? You have any thoughts?

TWO POLLS SHOW GUN CONTROL EVEN LESS POPULAR AFTER NAVY YARD SHOOTING

On September 21, the Huffington Post revealed results from two polls taken after the Navy Yard shooting which show that support for more gun control continues to slide.

The two polls—one from HuffPo/YouGov and the other from Gallup—show less-than-majority support for gun control in response to questions that once garnered solid majority support.

The HuffPo/YouGov poll shows only 48 percent of poll respondents supported more gun control. This is down from 60 percent support one month after the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary. The Gallup poll shows a drop from 58 percent in favor of stricter gun control to only 49 percent.

Can Inner-City Gangsters Be Stopped?

Gang violence is afflicting some of our major cities, Chicago chief amongst them. As I write, there are reports coming in regarding a shooting of 13 people at a basketball court in the Second City. Fortunately, no one was killed in this episode. But a three year old boy is now in critical condition as a result of being shot, and the not unreasonable expectation is that retaliation from the aggrieved gang toward the perpetrators of this particular act will soon follow. According to USA Today, this bout of gunfire was due to a dispute between the Gangster Disciples and the Black P Stone Nation gang. Neither is likely to sue the other in a court of law to settle their grievances with each other.

The purpose of the present essay is to offer the libertarian solution to this problem of inner city gangs, shootings, violence. How can we radically reduce if not entirely eliminate these acts of barbarism? But before we offer the correct (e.g., libertarian) analysis of this situation, let us consider those offered, and now often implemented, by our friends on the left and the right. (We libertarians fit into neither of these categories. We are neither “liberals” nor “progressives” nor “socialists” nor “communists” nor “neighborhood organizers” nor “left-wingers” nor “Democrats.” Nor are we “conservatives” or “right-wingers” or “fascists” or “constitutionalists” or “Republicans.” We are something apart and separate from both of them. We are libertarians. Hear us ROAR! )

The new law also expands the prohibition of handheld devices while in the “travel portion of the roadway,” according to a release from Maryland State Police.

First-time violators are subject to a $75 fine, an increase from $40. Second violations will cost drivers $125 and $175 for subsequent violations.
