Longing For The Carefree Parenting Style Of Yesterday?

When Betty Draper of "Mad Men" lit a cigarette on her son's school bus during a class trip in a recent episode, I cracked up. After all, the prospect of a 2014 mom smoking around her child's classmates is about as likely as teens giving up their smartphones.

Motherhood has changed a lot since I grew up in the 1960s.

Back then, women smoke and drank during pregnancy. (My mom says she even smoked in the hospital after delivering my sisters and me.) Today, expecting women add sushi and lunch meat to their alcohol and smoking bans.

Back then, Dr. Spock was the only guide for child-rearing. Today, there are too many manuals to count and Google is just a click away from parental questions answered.

Today's Survey Question 5-8-14

Preface: Yesterday Superintendent John Fredericksen stated that it would cost anywhere from $1,000.00 to $5,000.00 to install cameras at Parkside High School.

Now, considering Salisbury News has been delivering FACTUAL spending figures from Gift Cards and such, (1,600+ charges at more than $160,000.00 over the last two years) here's my Survey Question...

Do you believe the STUDENTS would be willing to forego the "Gift Cards" to help purchase new/additional cameras AND do you think the Board of Education could easily STOP spending so much money FOR THE CHILDREN at local Bars and Restaurants to help purchase these cameras?

PUBLISHERS NOTES: I want ALL of you to understand something here.

First of all, we have delivered this information for four weeks straight now. IF you thought what you have seen is BAD, let me educate you to something you didn't know.

On the Board of Education alone, there are more than ONE THOUSAND, SIX HUNDRED similar charges and a total of more than $160,000.00 in similar expenses.

We can continue to publish this information for months to come every week, (if you like) or we can simply say that we are the ONLY source within the local media that was willing to step up and provide such EDUCATIONAL information to the TAXPAYERS.

Mind you, I'm only talking about the Board of Education and NOT the County Executive. There's plenty more to come from both departments.

The choice is yours. Should we continue to deliver this information every week or have you seen enough?

Ron Pagano: Here's Looking At You

More than a month has passed since we first asked Mr. Pagano to level with Wicomico County residents about his past, and we have repeated, more than once, our invitation for him to do so on this blog. We have concluded that a cat has latched onto his tongue. Or is it his campaign manager, Michael Pretl?

We have been searching, and now have some details – this is from an article we found on the Internet that indicates that it appeared in the New York Times in July 2006 and discusses “Ron Pagano, 53, of Pasadena, Md.,” who is described as having degenerative arthritis as a result of inherited dwarfism:

In the 1970’s and 80’s, Mr. Pagano sold life insurance, started an electronic parts distribution company and worked in estate planning services, but eventually his arthritis got so bad that some days he couldn’t get out of bed, he said.

He went on disability in 2000, and later the RISE program provided him with eight weeks of training to evaluate the demographics and finances for a Coffee News franchise. He submitted a business plan for Coffee News — a one-page coffee-colored sheet that features human interest articles along with local advertising and is distributed to restaurants, coffee shops and motels — and received a $15,000 start-up grant for his franchise in Howard County, Md.

Since his mobility is restricted, Mr. Pagano takes care of the inside jobs, including accounting and billing, as well as the layout, design and printing. His wife, Karen, who is not disabled, handles the marketing, the sales and the distribution to 180 locations weekly.

So far, Mr. Pagano does not make enough — he declined to say exactly how much — to forgo federal disability and health care, but says, “We’re building something neat.”

What's interesting is the absence of any mention of practicing law in Ohio or elsewhere. And, possibly even more interesting, assuming that this is about the "Ronald A. Pagano" named in that federal tax lien filed last year for over $1 million, is how he went from being too poor "to forego federal disability and health care" to having huge unpaid tax liability just two years later.

Maybe Mr. Pretl will tell us – Pagano surely is not going to do so.

Maryland court records indicate that "Ronald Anthony Pagano" and his former wife, Karen, were divorced in 2009, when she was authorized to resume using her former name.

France Definitively Bans Genetically Modified Corn

France definitively banned the growing of genetically modified corn on Monday after its highest court and Senate both confirmed an existing ban.

A grouping of leftist senators including members of the ruling Socialists, Greens and Communists approved a law banning MON810, a type of GM corn produced by US firm Monsanto, that had already been passed by the lower house of parliament, overcoming opposition from right-wing members.

At the same time, the Council of State rejected a request from corn producers to overturn the ban on MON810.

The council said the applicants from the General Association of Corn Producers (AGPM) had failed to make the case that they faced an urgent economic crisis as a result of the ban, pointing to the fact that only a small portion of French corn is grown with GM seeds.

With Paris having twice put temporary bans on GM crops -- in 2011 and 2013 -- AGPM said Monday's verdicts were "not a surprise".

DON'T EAT THE MEATBALLS AT DELMAR PIZZA

Let me be the first to warn you, do NOT eat the meatballs at Delmar Pizza any time soon.

While I have always enjoyed eating at Delmar Pizza, I met with a friend there earlier this week and I ordered a meatball sub. I took my first bite and thought, this doesn't taste right. I took another bite and I said to my friend, this tastes like crap. It was disguised with Italian spices but let me tell you, by that evening I had become so sick I almost went to the Hospital and I probably should have. The next day was even worse.

I just received word this morning from another friend that they were extremely sick today. They had eaten meatballs from Delmar Pizza last night and they too are experiencing very similar problems.

I've tried calling Delmar Pizza but they didn't answer their phone this morning. Before anyone else gets sick, stay away from their meatballs.

I Have A Question About BOE Protocol

OK, you have a kid in your school who has been removed from two other schools.

The day begins and the troubled kid checks in to Home Room. First period comes along and the troubled kid doesn't show up for class.

Now, is it protocol to immediately contact the Main Office to let them know a particular kid hasn't shown up for class?

Let's say that is the case. Was protocol followed and did the Sheriffs Deputy immediately start searching the school to see where he/she might be?

In the case of Parkside, something really stinks about the whole thing. Why didn't anyone realize at least TWO students weren't in class?

PLEASE READ THIS IN ITS ENTIRITY IF YOU ARE AN ANIMAL LOVER

I live in Prinsess Anne, Somerset County. I have lived at the same address for 14 years and owned any where from 2-4 dogs this entire time. Animal Control has never been called to my house. Today I get a call from AC that my dog got out and was hit. She did not make it. I asked where I needed to come to pick her up. They stated that they were sorry but it was too late. Too late!? You have her collar? Where is my dog. I left work immediently and went to AC. I asked the lady what gave them the right. Why didn't you call me before instead of after. I still have no idea what they did with her. Yes, I was very upset as I believe any animal lover would be. I was yelling and cursing because they would give me no answers. I asked who was in charge and she pointed to a man that I would later find out is Donald Ford. All he seemed to be concered about was why she was out. You know what...things happen. All I wanted was my dogs remains. I asked where she was hit at and all he wanted to know was where I lived. Once I told him and asked again where she was when she was hit he told me to leave. I came home and spoke to an eye witness and found out that it was directly in front of my property. Based on where I live and my last name Donald may have thought that I was black. I wonder if that is why?
I want this Donald Fords job even though I know that won't happen. I will be happy to just find out what they did with my loved Jazmine and I don't want this to happen to anyone else. Please contact Doug Taylor at 410-651-0320 so that we can assure that this never happens to another pet owner. Thank you. RIP Jazine. We love and miss you

The Eastern Shore's Most Elite Are Losing Everything

What you are not hearing in the local Eastern Shore Media is just how bad things are here financially.

In beautiful and quiet communities the foreclosure rates are skyrocketing. I was told by a close friend, Joe, they aren't even putting up For Sale signs in communities because it would look like every home on every block was for sale.

Lighthouse Sound and the Riddle Farm are being hit the worst. Homes are falling into foreclosure at an alarming rate, many of them formerly worth more than a million dollars.

Troopers Investigating Deadly Pit Bull Attack

Felton, DE - The Delaware State Police are currently investigating a deadly pit bull attack that tragically killed a 4-year-old boy.

The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon as a 4-year-old Camden boy and his 24-year-old mother were visiting with a female friend in the 900 block of Edwardsville Road, west of Felton. The mother, who is several months pregnant, and her friend were inside the residence while the 4-year-old was outside playing in the yard around her friend's three pit bulls of whom he'd been around numerous times in the past. At one point, the mother looked out the window and observed her son being attacked by the dogs. While her friend called 9-1-1, the mother immediately ran out in an attempt to save her son and was also bit numerous times on both arms. Two HVAC repairmen working at the house also attempted to save the young child by fending off the animals with PVC piping and assisting the mother from the attacking dogs.

EMS and troopers responded to the scene and began first aid on the young boy before he was soon pronounced dead. He was turned over the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who will conduct an autopsy to rule the exact cause and manner of death.

The 24-year-old mother was transported by EMS to Kent General Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries as well as observation.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing and the three pit bull dogs were removed from the residence by the SPCA. The status of the dogs is unknown at this time.

The name of the 4-year-old victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Worcester County To Evaluate Excursion Train Trips

SNOW HILL — The County Commission agreed this week to finance a feasibility study that could lead to a Strasburg Railroad franchise coming to the shore. The railroad would feature excursion train trips between Berlin, Newark and Snow Hill.

A train tying together three parts of the county appealed to the commissioners who saw the potential for long-term tourism revenue far exceeding any start-up costs that would fall to Worcester.

“It would definitely be a feather in our cap to pull these guys in here,” said Commissioner Virgil Shockley. “This, to me, is one of those studies where we have to put in a little bit of money and hopefully get a lot and a lot of people. I’m all for this.”

Ron Pagano Is Pandering For Sarbanes

In a public message Mr. Pagano has declared his support for Spyros J. Sarbanes as the new judge in the Wicomico County Circuit Court and made a comment that some regard as slandering M. J. Caldwell. According to Pagano, Sarbanes was rated “highly qualified” by the "Bar Assoc.", which rated "his opponent" (Mr. Caldwell) as being "unqualified." The vote by Wicomico County’s bar association was almost the exact opposite – see the tally sheet from the vote, which we are posting again to provide the actual facts.

This shameless shilling for Sarbanes is not surprising. Pagano’s campaign chairperson is Michael Pretl. Because both candidates for the judgeship appear on each party’s ballot in the primary election in June, more mudslinging at Mr. Caldwell can be expected soon.

You Won’t Believe This Budget Proposal By Rick Pollitt

Yesterday we discussed Mr. Pollitt's proposed $250,000 funding for the vague purpose of "economic development" to be administered by unidentified "business advisors" and dispersed as "grants" to unspecified recipients to use for unspecified purposes. See our earlier post here: http://sbynews.blogspot.com/2014/05/bigger-wicomico-county-slush-fund.html.

Since then we have learned that the actual use of the some of that money and how it will be dispersed has already been decided. At last night's Wicomico County Council meeting, Joe Holloway mentioned that they have learned Mr. Pollitt proposes to use $100,000 to pay the County's impact fee on residential development – currently about $5,000 for a single-family home.

Instead of suspending the impact fee tax as other counties and towns including Salisbury and Fruitland have done – which Bob Culver has requested -- Mr. Pollitt wants the taxpayers to pay the fee, using money generated by the tax increase that Mr. Pollitt has also proposed in his latest budget that the County could apply to road repair, and other public benefits.

This proposal is unbelievable, but true. It is like, to mask the pain from shooting yourself in the foot, shooting yourself in the other foot. Mr. Pollitt must consider the impact fee "too good to stop” and want Wicomico County taxpayers to have the pleasure of paying it. They should be outraged.

That leaves $150,000 of the proposed funding. When Joe Holloway asked if the administration could let the Council know about Mr. Pollitt's plan for spending that, the response suggests that the money is already earmarked. What else is being hidden from public scrutiny by Mr. Pollitt?

HuffPo Informs Us: 93 Percent Of Straight Men Have 'Cuddled Or Spooned' With Another Man

We're all gay now!

I can't decide whether to laugh harder or really dig into the numbers. But Huffington Post is pretty excited about this:

That’s according to a new study out of Britain on the changing social habits of heterosexual males. Published in the journal of Men and Masculinities in March, the study revealed that 98 percent of the study’s participants -- all white, college-age male athletes -- have shared a bed with another guy. In addition, 93 percent also reported having spooned or cuddled with another man.

Study co-author and sociologist Mark McCormack, of Durham University, says the study’s results exemplify changing conceptions of masculinity in contemporary culture. As homophobia decreases, McCormack says, straight men are acting “much softer” than those from older generations -- something he and Eric Anderson, of the University of Winchester, set out to examine.

FYI, I called the BOE this am to find out if that kid was suspended or expelled and I was told "Mam there is no reason to worry about that because he is in jail." I explained that he was out on bail and if he was not formally suspended or expelled that I believe he can be in school today. She tried to transfer me to the Director of School Safety , but he was in a meeting.

Calif. Bill Banning State Sale Of Confederate Flag Passes

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California state government departments will be prohibited from selling or displaying items with an image of the Confederate flag under a bill that passed the Assembly on Monday.

AB2444 by Assemblyman Isadore Hall, D-Compton, is headed to the Senate after passing on a 72-1 vote. Hall introduced the bill after his mother saw replica Confederate money being sold at the state Capitol gift shop.

He called the image a symbol of racism meant to intimidate.

Fox News star unleashed: Impeach Obama

'You, Mr. President, have defrauded the American people'

Fox News host Judge Jeanine Pirro has launched a scathing, on-air indictment of President Barack Obama, calling for his impeachment from office.

On Saturday night’s broadcast of “Justice with Judge Jeanine,” Pirro uncorked a blistering verbal assault on Obama in connection with his handling of the fatal onslaught of the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, on Sept. 11, 2012, and the subsequent cover-up.

“Mr. President, it’s called an abrogation of duty,” Pirro said. “You have not taken your oath to honestly and faithfully execute the duties of your office. As commander in chief, you have NOT protected us. This dereliction of duty as commander in chief demands your impeachment.”

Watch a 90-second clip of Judge Jeanine Pirro calling for Obama’s impeachment:

UN: Botched Okla. Execution May Have Violated International Human Rights Law

The United Nations human rights office says U.S. death row inmate Clayton Lockett’s suffering during his botched Oklahoma execution this week may amount to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment under international human rights law.

A spokesman for the office, Rupert Colville, says Lockett’s prolonged death on Tuesday is “the second case of apparent extreme suffering caused by malfunctioning lethal injections” reported in the United States this year, after Dennis McGuire’s execution in Ohio on Jan. 16 with an allegedly untested combination of drugs.

Colville told reporters Friday in Geneva that “the apparent cruelty involved in these recent executions simply reinforces the argument that authorities across the United States should impose an immediate moratorium on the use of the death penalty and work for abolition of this cruel and inhuman practice.”

Norm and Jim’s 2014 Pork – for the Willards Lions Club

We recently posted an article about Maryland’s Consolidated Capital Bond Loan of 2014, which has a link to the actual loan usage list that includes a “grant” of $50,000.00 to the Willards Lions Club. As we previously reported, that state spending was sponsored by Norman Conway in the House of Delegates and Jim Mathias in the Maryland Senate. Oink, Oink! The Lions Club got the $50,000.00.

If you’re a Maryland taxpayer, feel free to comment about this outrage.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post 5-5-14

Alex Guerrero displayed he is indeed an incredible contender for a championship belt with his 11-0 record.

On Friday night in Dover he won every round including one knock down. He earned a unanimous decision by the Judges.

Always humble, Alex will continue intense training sided by side with up and coming hopefuls at the Main Street Gym in Salisbury. He's a great role model and a great boxer.

Pope Demands 'Legitimate Redistribution' of Wealth

Pope Francis called Friday for governments to redistribute wealth to the poor in a new spirit of generosity to help curb the "economy of exclusion" that is taking hold today.

Francis made the appeal during a speech to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the heads of major U.N. agencies who are meeting in Rome this week.

Latin America's first pope has frequently lashed out at the injustices of capitalism and the global economic system that excludes so much of humanity.

On Friday, Francis called for the United Nations to promote a "worldwide ethical mobilization" of solidarity with the poor in a new spirit of generosity.
