City Administrator Julia Glanz Marries On The Downtown Plaza

On Saturday, May 20th, Salisbury's City Administrator Julia Glanz married her long-time partner, Lindsey in an intimate Spring ceremony on our Downtown Plaza.

Officiating the event was former Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton in front of the reflection pond near WMDT's headquarters.

Afterwards wedding party, family and guests celebrated the couple at their reception at Headquarters Live.

We're OUT!

By Thornton Crowe

In the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump has announced we are officially out of the monetary quagmire of the Paris Climate Accord. After the announcement, the market immediate escalated as the NASDAQ, S&P and DOW demonstrated the market's approval of the US leaving this heavy handed mandate on our economy.

Closing at 21,144.18 the market reflects confidence in the President's economic plans and strategies, meaning more investors are willing to push money back into the market, correlating into job creation and a push towards a booming economy.

In the speech, President Trump reiterated the importance the American people, stating, "I was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris."

In a detailed announcement, he spoke of the nuts and bolts, showing the Paris Climate Accord was a bad deal for American and our economy all the way around as it promised the US would pay billions and yet, no other large country has obligated to do the same. This was a redistribution of wealth and we were on the losing end of the deal.

Furthermore, he assured that he was open to a renegotiation of another deal but was willing for the US to "go it alone" if need be.

UPDATE: The UN has issued a statement of their disappointment the US has decided to leave the Paris Climate Accord. They should be prepared, this will not be the last disappointment the UN will experience under this presidency because he doesn't buy the misinformation they've been propagating on America for many years.

It's a  funny thing about the Internet! It has a way of recording things for posterity and reminds us of promises we usually forget as time blows forward.

This morning while trying to figure out this week's musing, I came across an old article in the Daily Times from the day after Jake Day's election on November 5, 2015. Interestingly, this article about Jake's big plans for Salisbury illustrates just how much voters were lied to during his election.

A brilliantly horrific ruse of so-called development for Downtown Salisbury was amusing to read as it contained all the fantasies fairy tales are made of - so much so, it put pulp fiction to shame. You know, the same downtown where community leaders and Salisbury University president make idiots of themselves by saying "It's all happening," in some dippy, waste-of-taxpayer money commercial even though its been a hot bed for crime.

One quote really summed it all in a spectacular package:
"City officials have said they want to see a multi-use development plan for the 3.5-acre site that includes retail space, apartments, park areas and parking," states the Daily Times article.
Low-Income Project disguised as 'apartments'

There you go, folks, apartments. Does the word apartment mean the same thing as low-income housing otherwise referred to as Projects in bigger urban areas? Hardly. The word, Project, brings forth a much different image; however, many who think of downtown, think of the fancy Metropolitan Magazine-type lofts with Stainless Appliances. They would never envision an urban concrete jungle complete with section 8, low-income families shooting up the place after a night out boozing and losing on their welfare checks.

Incidentally, in the same article, Day brags how he has a passion for home ownership. If this is true, why build 'apartments' at all in a town that already has a 80% rental rate? Isn't this a contradiction of purpose?

Retail Space

Did Jake not see all the vacant retail space along West Main? Buildings like the old Vernon Powell are decaying from lack of use but we're gonna build new spaces!

Given the low-income housing (Project), I can't fathom Betty Sue from Nithsdale will be able to convince hubby Biff to invest in some chi-chi store in the middle of the "Hood." Therefore, it's safe to assume this so-called retail space would be filled with unsavory businesses, bringing yet more crime to the 'it's all happening' neighborhood.

Parking

Everyone in Salisbury, at one point or another, has dealt with its parking ills so how does anyone think we will get more parking with less parking areas? Are they going to build some 50 floor parking structure?

Day told one of my sources a couple months ago, he's only obligated (by law or statute) to provide one half of a parking space per low-income apartment in his spiffy new housing plan. What about all the shoppers he sees coming coming to downtown and the courthouse workers and participants? All this means is now the low-income residents will be fighting lawyers to park their junkers next to shiny Mercedes in the hood. Talk about a scratch & dent extravaganza!

Arts & Entertainment

Day's dream don't stop at housing and retail either. He claims he wants to compete with other small Maryland hamlets like Frederick's "lively downtown arts and entertainment district." We've watched Headquarters Live crash and burn along with several bars opening and closing in short amounts of time so its safe to assume that pipe dream won't ever happen. Who wants to party in the Hood?

Who needs bank when you have dreams?

Nowhere in the article does Jake address Salisbury's job shortage, creating some incentives for new businesses to open or the fact that SU gobbles up property around Salisbury, leaving even less taxpayer money for his grand schemes. Those details are just too inconvenient to mention. Besides, in Day's world, voters either think money will fall from sky for it or don't care about their property taxes (the 20% who actually own) will escalate. Right?

In essence, Salisbury, you elected an illusion -- Jake Day, a man whose grand dreams never factored in a thing sane people refer to as, reality!

Just another day in the Delusion a la Jakester... Ain't life grand?

Jim Ireton Seeking Government Dole....Again?

By Thornton Crowe

Some professional candidates just don't know when to call it a day...

Through many sources it has come to our attention former Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton is planning to run for the Wicomico County Clerk of the Court position next November when Mark Bowen retires from the position he's held for several years.

It's troubling Ireton, once again, feels the need to continually run for elected offices in this area when he doesn't do a good job once elected. Look at his tenure as Mayor where he made many promises but none were kept adequately.

The big unkept promises were as glaring as a bright red neon light. First, he promised to clean up the Wicomico River around the downtown area but you still cannot stick your toe in much less swim in the pollution infested waters. Second, there's the sewage plant Salisbury residents paid a hefty multi-million dollar price but has never worked correctly.

His reputation well-known throughout the Shore

Furthermore, no one can forget his failed run against a missing-in-action candidate during the Congressional primaries to challenge Dr. Andy Harris, which ended in a disastrous poor showing at the polls. Also, keep in mind, this primary run was after stepping down from his newly elected council position in order to run his failed campaign. Thus, proving Ireton's past is history even folks in Easton have heard about.

Don't forget, folks, it was Ireton who urinated in a ladies' bathroom sink at MoJo's in front of three female patrons. Additionally, his situation in Rehoboth with beach parties which had behavior unbecoming of a mayor for one of Delmarva's largest town.

This kind of infamy is not desirable for such an important county position where the clerk must work with law enforcement, judicial courts and county executive on a daily basis.

Learn from the past so it's not recreated in the future

Judging from his past personal faux pas, bad judgement calls and non-existent legislative achievement record, to say he would be a competent Clerk of the Court is a gross overstatement of his abilities and completely ignoring his past. It is most assured he could never serve our community with the same dignity and integrity we're use to with Mr. Bowen (and we deserve.)

Let's hope someone will challenge him should he actually run for this position because we wouldn't want the same fiasco like the city mayor position which ran unopposed and ending in a subpar nightmare.

Mr. Bowen has served us well and will be missed when he retires in November after the election. We can only hope we find someone with his caliber of professionalism befitting the office. Unfortunately, for Ireton, he doesn't come close to fitting that tall order in any manner.

Crisis of Conflictual Interests?

By Thornton Crowe

On May 30th in the Independent, it was reported that Wicomico County home/landowners would be given a reduction in their property taxes, prosed by Council President at Large John Cannon. The article indicates the reduction is one that hasn't occurred in a long time and gives owners a much-needed tax break in this economic climate.

The Independent states the plan to be, "...mean county property owners will receive their first tax cut in memory, lowering the property tax rate by slightly more than a penny, down from the current 0.9516 cents per $100 to 0.9398 cents."

Creative ways to work around the system...

Interesting that Cannon would forward this proposition at this time when you consider Salisbury Mayor Jake Day's just approved budget, where he is looking to the landlord class to foot the deficits created by property tax reduction he's giving own-occupied dwellings in the city. It is all about timing and when you look closely, it was no altruistic gesture on Cannon's part to propose such a cut to county residents.

Owning Cannon Management & Rentals LLC, which owns and manages approximately 229 properties throughout Wicomico/Salisbury, this reduction gives him plenty of reasons to off-set his own property tax burden. By reducing the county taxes, it essentially washes any tax increase leveled by the city.

Pretty Clever but not entirely Flawless

Two unfortunately things about this tax reduction proposal are glaring obvious for quick dot connectors. First, while this will save Cannon literally hundreds of thousands of tax dollars, for the average one-home resident in the county, it means roughly $6.00 to $7.00 per year in savings. Yep, that's it. Not even a cool Hamilton. So much for altruistic gestures and all other such rubbish.

Second, when this vote occurred, Cannon failed to recuse himself from said vote. Can you say, "Conflict of Interest?" Much like a doctor voting on increased medical payments on a hospital board, this is nothing short than a massive ethics violation on his lot. It is such a blatant ethics snafu, it cannot be ignored even by the most causal observer.

Why do we continuously allow this kind of 'insider trading' in our county's governance? Isn't this like leaving a fox in charge of the hen house?

What say you?

Smash Cash

By Thornton Crowe

Good morning everyone. It has come to my attention that a very interesting arrangement has been instated at City Hall taxpayers should be made aware of as its a blatant misappropriation of your money. Instead of paying to have potholes in the roads fixed, adding lights to troubled intersections and solving the on-going dilemma of our fire department, Mayor Jake Day has a staff of six to do nothing but surf the internet for negative articles about him!

Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, my sources from City Hall relay, there is a group of six employees dedicated to defusing negative press about the Mayor's initiatives. In an interview with the editor here on Salisbury News, it is one of the reasons why Albero chose to start moderating comments with more scrutiny because this so-called 'staff' writes in comments that either contained fake news to counter the original article or issue personal smears against him and his family. Childish use of time it would seem, these people are doing this on your dime, folks.

When an article was published a few months back about a brutal gang rape here in Salisbury that was only reported on SBYNEWS, Day himself took to Facebook, personally slamming the blog as "fake news" when in fact, Albero had proof of the incident. It seems Day will stop at nothing to keep his low-crime in Salisbury myth alive.

As taxpayers who work hard for your money, is this acceptable use of the City's tax revenue? How is this type of propaganda spinning really helping you, the resident? Is it making your lives better to be paying for this type of fodder?

Granted, having a (one) public relations person is always a given with any office dealing with news but a staff of 6? Even if they were paid a paltry $20K a year plus benefits salary each, that's $120K a year. What else could be done with this money to make your lives better instead of pumping up the Mayor for some future run for a higher office?

It is no secret that since his election, Day has re-organized the staff at City Hall; i.e. letting older vested people go so he could hire young people at a much cheaper rate; however, this goes far beyond acceptability for most voters who elected Day to improve the city not defend it's demise. Your money is being flagrantly wasted to the point of lunacy.

Here's a brilliant suggestion for the Mayor: Perhaps if you would bring forth meaningful initiatives that make your residents' lives better and our town more appealing for people to start small businesses, you wouldn't need a staff to deflect bad press about you! Why? Because there wouldn't be that much bad press in the first place if you were really doing your job properly!

Men's lacrosse wins 12th national title in program history with win 5-28-17

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Salisbury University men's lacrosse team played Rochester Institute of Technology in the 2017 NCAA men's lacrosse national championship game and won the program's 12 national title with a 15-7 win over the Tigers at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

It is Salisbury's second title in as many years and moves the Gulls all-time record at Gillette Stadium to 3-0 with all three wins coming in the title game.

Salisbury was led on the offensive end by Kevin McDermott and Carson Kalama. McDermott posted a career high in points with four from one goal and three assists and Kalama made his presence felt by posting four goals and one assist for four points. Also coming up big on the offensive end was Josh Melton as the freshman posted his frist-career hat trick. Colin Reymann made 12 stops in cage and in front of him Cory Berry posted three caused turnovers.

Be sure to check www.suseagulls.com later tonight for the full game recap.

Remembering When There Wasn’t a Chesapeake Bay Bridge

William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge History

This content is sponsored by Maryland Transportation Authority

A dream in 1908, a financial impossibility in 1929 and a war-postponed plan in 1940, what now is known as the Bay Bridge became a reality in 1949, when construction began and the first dredge started pumping the bottom of the Chesapeake Bay to make way for the bridge.

The world’s largest continuous over-water steel structure when it opened in 1952, the William Preston Lane Jr. Memorial (Bay) Bridge provides a structural link that did not exist in the days when colonial Marylanders traveled by boat, with the Chesapeake Bay as their highway.

Along with the many private boats sailing the Bay prior to the Industrial Revolution, records show a regular ferry running between Kent Island and the Annapolis shore. However, as the population grew and spread inland, the wagon road, the railroad and, later, the automobile and the motor-truck, gradually relegated the Bay by boat to obscurity, and the Chesapeake Bay became a barrier rather than a bond between Eastern Maryland and the rest of the State.

There are recurring stories that, in the 1880s, preliminary studies explored building a bridge across the Bay. In 1907, Peter C. Campbell, Baltimore businessman and State Senator, told his associates that more of the Eastern Shore trade, which had been coming by boat to Baltimore, was going north by highway and railroad to Wilmington and Philadelphia.

County Executive Culver Sends Letter To Council President Cannon

John T. Cannon
Wicomico County, Maryland
P. O. Box 870
Salisbury, Maryland 21803

Dear John,

I am disappointed that my staff and I were not afforded the opportunity to discuss the Council Budget Amendments during the May 30, 2017, Council Meeting. As stated in Wayne Strausburg's letter of May 30, 2017, the Council Budget Amendments have resulted in an unbalanced General Fund Budget. A detailed explanation from acting Finance Director Dawn Parks is attached for your review. I have also attached the applicable Charter sections provided by Paul Wilber.

I believe that the County taxpayers will be best served by passing a Budget Bill which complies with the Charter and will allow the County to operate with a balanced budget starting July 1, 2017. My staff and I can meet with you at a mutually convenient time to negotiate a balanced budget, which will allow an Amended Budget Bill to be passed by the Council at the June 6, 2017, Council Meeting.

Respectfully,

Bob Culver

Obamas purchase their DC rental house for millions

WASHINGTON (CNN) —It's only been little more than four months, but it appears Barack and Michelle Obama are so enamored with their posh Washington, DC rental home, they've plunked down a whopping $8.1 million to purchase it.

The sale was first reported by the Washington Post. Obama's spokesman, Kevin Lewis, confirmed the sale to CNN: "Given that President and Mrs. Obama will be in Washington for at least another two and a half years, it made sense for them to buy a home rather than continuing to rent the property."

The Obamas have said they were committed to remaining in Washington while their youngest daughter, Sasha, completes high school at Sidwell Friends School, where she is scheduled to begin her junior year in September.

One family. Four generations of disability benefits. Will it continue?

PEMISCOT COUNTY, Mo. — The food was nearly gone and the bills were going unpaid, but they still had their pills, and that was what they thought of as the sky brightened and they awoke, one by one. First came Kathy Strait, 55, who withdrew six pills from a miniature backpack and swallowed them. Then emerged her daughter, Franny Tidwell, 32, who rummaged through 29 bottles of medication atop the refrigerator and brought down her own: oxcarbazepine for bipolar disorder, fluoxetine for depression, an opiate for pain. She next reached for two green bottles of Tenex, a medication for hyperactivity, filled two glasses with water and said, “Come here, boys.”

The boys were identical twins William and Dale, 10. They were the fourth generation in this family to receive federal disability checks, and the first to be declared no longer disabled and have them taken away. In days that had grown increasingly tense, as debts mounted and desperation grew to prove that the twins should be on disability, this was always the worst time, before the medication kicked in, when the mobile home was filled with the sounds of children fighting, dogs barking, adults yelling, television volume turned up.

And so went another morning, loud and chaotic, right up until the moment someone dropped the puppy.

Man carrying infant on motorcycle causing a stir on social media

A photo of a man riding on a "crotch rocket" motorcycle with an infant lying on the gas tank is making its way around social media. Facebook posts with the photo purport that the man was seen on SH 321 in Liberty County on or before the Memorial Day weekend.

Just hours after the Cleveland Advocate posted the original story Tuesday morning, numerous calls to the Liberty County Sheriff's Office provided investigators with the man's identity, 30-year-old Anthony Braddick Welsh.

Welsh was arrested Tuesday afternoon at his home in Tarkington for an outstanding traffic warrant for the City of Deer Park but he could face additional charges related to the alleged motorcycle ride with his child, authorities say.

A Viewer Writes: Fight on site Fridays 6-2-17

Hey Joe, I just got an email from a teacher at SMS and she asked me to try to get the word out as she cannot. I am going to copy and paste her message.

So 2-3 weeks ago students were posting on social media about "fight on site" Friday where on every Friday students fight for no particular reason other random students. Now teachers are being threatened by students that the attacks will include them on Friday so there is an emergency staff meeting after school today to address it. I need this information to get to the media somehow but I can't be the one to report it. Can you contact news or something? Leave my name out of it? The Sheriff's department knows about it and the flight on site story was on Salisbury News but it needs to be updated and more coverage.

That was her message. Can you get the word out for her.

KATHY GRIFFIN LOSES MORE GIGS

Kathy Griffin is still feeling the aftershocks from her pic with a fake bloody Donald Trump head -- 2 more venues have canceled her shows.

Griffin's Celebrity Run-In Tour gig at St. George Theatre in Staten Island on November 2 has been axed ... and the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ pulled the plug on her November 3 show.

Both venues posted their decisions to cancel online and will be issuing full refunds to ticket buyers. St. George Theatre says ... "Ms. Griffin’s recent actions have severely inhibited our ability to fulfill our mission as a non-profit theatre serving the Staten Island community." Jersey's State Theatre also cited safety concerns.

This makes 5 shows officially canceled on Kathy's tour ... Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque nixed her show Wednesday and 2 California venues followed.

Constructions About To Begin on Route 13 (South Salisbury Blvd)

Peninsula Regional Medical Center
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is about to launch a massive drainage improvement project on Business Route 13 (South Salisbury Boulevard) that will have a significant impact on traffic around Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC).

The construction will begin in early June and is expected to last 9 to 12 months; however, the project could possibly be extended once state highway crews begin work and are able to more thoroughly assess the infrastructure.

The construction that is to be conducted consists of replacing inefficient storm water drainage and adding new inlets, which will reduce flooding along the Business Route 13 corridor. In addition to the drainage system, state highway crews will also construct new sidewalks that will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). These improvements will result in safer walkways and a more superior drainage system, thus providing better roadways for motorist, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Setting the Record Straight

West Main Street, Salisbury, MD
Yesterday we got a comment from someone who seemed to have intimate knowledge of the City Administrator Julia Glanz wedding. We didn't publish the comment because the rest of it contain language we reject, we did take issue with something they said about the wedding. They claimed no street was blocked off for the wedding, however, as you can see from the picture, the chairs are in the middle of the street. There are also businesses all around the intersection where the wedding took place, when the commenter said there weren't any businesses right there.

These two images show clearly the entire street is brick at this point, a leftover from the brilliant person who made it a plaza sometime in the seventies or eighties and then turned it back into a drivable road.

If this was one of the Glanzs this is the reason we didn't post your comment because it was untrue. Why do officials in this area lie to the public in order to hide their activities? The road being closed for a short ceremony probably wouldn't be a big deal but lying about it is a huge deal. This is the reason why we posted these pictures to set this record straight.

Some comments from yesterday expressed upset about the road being closed and worried city services were used to clean up the mess afterwards. As taxpayers, this is a valid complaint because most citizens, unless friends with city hall don't have the luxury of being able to have our weddings anywhere we want without any regard to other people's situations.

If you didn't want the wedding to be public then why have it in the middle of the street. If you didn't want people to see the images don't post them on Facebook. If you don't want comments then don't be a city official. We're amazed at the protest about the post because we didn't get the same kinds of protests when we posted John Cannon's wedding picture a few months back in a derogatory article about his relationship with Sheriff Mike Lewis (who officiated his wedding at Headquarters Live).

If you're a pubic official using a public street for your wedding then chances are eventually some press will cover your wedding. The problem here it is Salisbury News who covered the Glanz wedding which for some reason pisses city hall off even though we wrote nothing negative in the post, we just announced it like any other media in town.

A Letter To The Editor: Princess Anne Police Dept. 6-1-17

Can you tell me what I can do about a police officer from the Princess Anne Police Dept. abusing an elderly man? This man who is 65 yrs old with health problems was sitting on the ground and the officer hit him and then proceeded to use the butt of his gun and hit him in the back of the head, and broke his eye glasses. The officer told him after this man asked him why he was doing that, that he could kill him and stuff him in a trunk and no one would ever find him. They have also added unfounded charges when it should have only been a trespassing charge. What can we do? We have never experienced something this bad. We need Help.

Barron Trump thought Kathy Griffin actually beheaded his father: Report

President Trump's 11-year-old son Barron reportedly thought a gory image of comedian Kathy Griffin holding a bloody head was actually his father.

TMZ reported Wednesday that Barron was at the family's New York City penthouse with first lady Melania Trump when the photo appeared on TV.

Barron saw the image and panicked.

"Mommy, mommy!" he reportedly screamed.

The first lady said in a statement that the photo "makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it."

Debate raging over removing Confederate statues and names

Coe joined to fight for the Confederacy "because he was a North Carolinian and North Carolina was invaded by the federal army," he explained.

Coe, one of many reenactors participating in Fairfax Civil War Day on April 29, 2017, is angry about the movement underway to remove Confederate statues and names from public places.

"A statue is signifying a part of the history of this country. Whether you agree with it and what the side fought for, or whether you disagree with it," said Coe.

There have been protests over the decision to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee from a Charlottesville park. The General's reenactor, Al Stone, says people don't know the full story.

Pugh to explore removing Confederate monuments in Baltimore 5-29-17

New Orleans recently took down its Confederate monuments. Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh says she is considering doing the same thing in the city.

“The city does want to remove these,” Pugh told The Baltimore Sun. “We will take a closer look at how we go about following in the footsteps of New Orleans.”

Before former Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake left office last year, she added signs in front of four Confederate monuments in Baltimore. The signs said, in part, that the monuments were “part of a propaganda campaign of national pro-Confederate organizations to perpetuate the beliefs of white supremacy, falsify history and support segregation and racial intimidation.”
