Watching Man Rip Up Homeless Veteran’s Sign Might Anger You at First — but Just Wait for It

In a YouTube video that has gone viral, magician Rob Anderson walks up to a homeless U.S. Army veteran and rips his sign to pieces. If the video stopped there, it would be a despicable act.

Fortunately, it doesn’t. In fact, it gets much better.

Even as Alan McCracken watched a stranger destroy the sign he uses to collect money, he remained as respectful as you’d expect a military veteran to be.

“Can I keep the magic marker to make another sign?” McCracken asks in the video.

CNN Reporter Returning from Liberia 'Shocked' and 'Horrified' by Lax Screening

On Monday on HLN, CNN medical reporter Elizabeth Cohen said she was aghast at the lax screening procedures at airports for passengers who might have been exposed to Ebola. She said that even after she told agents she was coming back from Liberia and had been covering the Ebola epidemic, the screening agents did not seem to care and could not even tell her what symptoms were Ebola warning signs.

"I expected that they were going to take my temperature, they would ask me lots of questions, but they didn’t," Cohen said on HLN on Monday. "I said, 'I'm a journalist. I’ve come back from Liberia. I was covering Ebola.' And the gentleman who was helping me--the officer--he started to hand my passport back and say, 'welcome home.'"

Philadelphia Teachers Furious They Must Now Contribute Toward Their Own Benefits

To combat a brutal, deficit-plagued balance sheet, Philadelphia’s School Reform Commission has unilaterally canceled the current contract negotiated by the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, the city’s teachers union.

The city officially canceled the contract on Monday morning, Philadelphia ABC affiliate WPVI reports.

The contract cancellation will not reduce teachers’ salaries one iota. Going forward, however, teachers (and some retirees) will be asked to fund part of their own health coverage. Specifically, starting in December they will be asked to pay between $21 and $200 each month for coverage.

Drug War Asininity: Cops Raid Georgia Man’s Home After Mistaking Okra for Weed

Heroic Georgia police task force, in an effort to keep the citizens of Cartersville safe from a plant, descended onto the house of a man who’d dare grow vegetables in his own yard.

Dwayne Perry was awaken Wednesday night to a helicopter hovering over his house and deputies and a K-9 unit in his front yard.

“They were strapped to the gills,” Perry said. “I was scared actually at first, because I didn’t know what was happening.”

The chopper belonged to the heroic task force created by the Georgia governor’s office which is setup to kidnap and cage those who’d dare try to do with their own bodies as they wish.

The overzealous and highly incompetent task force mistook an okra plant, which has five leaves for the cannabis plant which has seven.

“We’ve not been able to identify it as of yet. But it did have quite a number of characteristics that were similar to a cannabis plant,” said Georgia State Patrol Capt. Kermit Stokes.

Crony Capitalism Is Kryptonite To Democracy And The Real Economy

When the machinery of governance is ruled by the highest bidders, democracy is dead.

Last week I described the sources of America's America's terminal political dysfunction. The engine of this terminal dysfunction is crony capitalism, the incestuous and oh-so-profitable marriage of the Central State and monied Elites.
Gordon T. Long and I continue our discussion of the perverse incentives and consequences of crony capitalism in a 25-minute video program.

Gordon argues that America's Crony Capitalism closely resembles the Roman Tribute System, an arrangement that skims wealth and concentrates it at the top of the power pyramid.

OBAMA'S WATCH: 90% OF 20K TOTAL U.S. WARRIORS WOUNDED IN AFGHANISTAN WAR

At least 17,316 American soldiers have been wounded in the Afghanistan war theater since Obama was inaugurated for his first term, according to a count maintained by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Overall, according to the Pentagon, 20,017 United State troops have been wounded in action (WIA) since Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) began 13 years ago today.

OEF is the official name of the Afghanistan war theater, which also involves military operations in Guantanamo Bay (Cuba), Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.

Most, just about all, OEF-related activity has taken place in Afghanistan.

Temples to Cronyism?

The NFL is running one of its own games on the public, and as one of the most subsidized non-profit organizations in American history, the NFL excels at tackling the American taxpayer. It should be of no surprise that with its religious-like following, the NFL receives the same tax-exempt status as a church, exempted under the IRS 501 (c) 6 code from paying federal taxes. The legislation puts the NFL as a non-profit trade association which it has been under since 1942.

But over the past twenty years, 101 new sports facilities have opened in the United States — a 90-percent replacement rate — and lately there has been a rising tendency for renovation costs to skyrocket into the hundreds of millions, which, according to Harvard University urban planning professor Judith Grant Long, the taxpayer foots on average 70 percent of the bill, with often not a penny coming out of the pockets of the team or its owners. The rest of the funding comes from tax-exempt municipal bonds supported under the G4 stadium loan program, which provides loans in return for revenue generated from ticket sales and premium seating.

As is the case with “too big to fail” financial institutions, the NFL is given politically-favored status, and protected by a trench of antitrust exemptions. But unlike the overpaid (read: taxpayer-subsidized) CEOs of Goldman Sachs and Chase Bank, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell earns twice as much as them, thanks to an NFL flush with taxpayer cash. Goodell earned more than $44 million in 2013, and in the past five years he has made over $105 million.

AVERAGE BEDTIME BY US COUNTY

A few months ago, Jawbone explored how people move and sleep in the cities of the world. We saw the ways that our lives are shaped by culture, work habits, and holidays, among other factors. One question came up repeatedly: what about the rest of us, the ones who don’t live in cities? Here, we’ll dive into a more geographically complete picture of sleep in the US.

Good Grief: NY Times Op-Ed Deems Pedophilia A “Disorder, Not A Crime”

THINK back to your first childhood crush. Maybe it was a classmate or a friend next door. Most likely, through school and into adulthood, your affections continued to focus on others in your approximate age group. But imagine if they did not.

By some estimates, 1 percent of the male population continues, long after puberty, to find themselves attracted to prepubescent children. These people are living with pedophilia, a sexual attraction to prepubescents that often constitutes a mental illness. Unfortunately, our laws are failing them and, consequently, ignoring opportunities to prevent child abuse.

We really shouldn’t be surprised by this attitude: liberals have long shown tolerance for NAMBLA, the North American Man/Boy Love Association. We’ve seen Liberal judges give extremely lenient sentences to child molesters. And Liberals have created an “if it feels good, do it” mentality. And they seem to have this base reaction to turning criminals and potential criminals into victims.

Part of this failure stems from the misconception that pedophilia is the same as child molestation. One can live with pedophilia and not act on it. Sites like Virtuous Pedophiles provide support for pedophiles who do not molest children and believe that sex with children is wrong. It is not that these individuals are “inactive” or “nonpracticing” pedophiles, but rather that pedophilia is a status and not an act. In fact, research shows, about half of all child molesters are not sexually attracted to their victims. (snip)

The Virtuous Pedophiles website is full of testimonials of people who vow never to touch a child and yet live in terror. They must hide their disorder from everyone they know — or risk losing educational and job opportunities, and face the prospect of harassment and even violence. Many feel isolated; some contemplate suicide. The psychologist Jesse Bering, author of “Perv: The Sexual Deviant in All of Us,” writes that people with pedophilia “aren’t living their lives in the closet; they’re eternally hunkered down in a panic room.”

After Being Fined for Refusing to Host Gay Weddings, Christian Farm Owners Are Fighting Back With Stunning Decision

The owners of a family farm who are being fined $13,000 for refusing to host a gay wedding ceremony are taking action in an effort to overturn the state’s ruling against them. An attorney for the Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative legal firm, filed a petition in New York State court Thursday on behalf of Cynthia and Robert Gifford, owners of Liberty Ridge Farm. The petition asks that the “sexual orientation discrimination” ruling given by the New York State Division of Human Rights in August be reexamined.

The legal battle touched off after the Giffords, who are Christians, told Jennifer McCarthy and Melisa Erwin, a lesbian couple from Newark, New Jersey, back in 2012 that they were welcome to hold their reception on the property, but not the actual wedding ceremony, according to Religion News Service.

McCarthy and Erwin, angry over the rejection, took their grievances — and audio from their conversation with the farm owners that was reportedly secretly recorded — to New York’s Division of Human Rights, claiming that they were discriminated against as a result of their sexual orientation. A judge agreed and the farm owners were fined $10,000 plus an additional $3,000 in damages for violating anti-discrimination regulations under New York’s Human Rights Law.

The conservative legal firm’s appeal argues in Gifford v. New York State Division of Human Rights that the state “did not consider Robert and Cynthia’s constitutional freedoms and religious beliefs,” according to a press release.

Md. Police Officers Learn Better Ways To Handle Domestic Abuse Cases

The meeting comes just weeks after the inside elevator video surfaced of Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer.

Officials say unfortunately, it takes a case like that sometimes to help raise awareness across the country.

Voice-activated Phones, Car Dashboard Technology Worsen Distracted-Driving Problems, Studies Say

Just because you can talk to your car doesn't mean you should. Two new studies have found that voice-activated smartphones and dashboard infotainment systems may be making the distracted-driving problem worse instead of better.

The systems let drivers do things like tune the radio, send a text message, or make a phone call while keeping their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel, but many of these systems are so error-prone or complex that they require more concentration from drivers rather than less, according to studies released Tuesday by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and the University of Utah.

One study examined infotainment systems in some of the most common auto brands on the road: Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai and Mercedes. The second study tested the Apple iPhone's Siri voice system to navigate, send texts, make Facebook and Twitter posts, and use the calendar without handling or looking at the phone. Apple and Google are working with automakers to mesh smartphones with infotainment systems so that drivers can bring their apps, navigation and music files into their cars.

Obama Administration Provides Money and Praise to US Mosques

In light of the recent ISIS-style beheading committed by Alton Nolen/Jah’Keem Yisrael, who had evidently been indoctrinated into the ways of Islam by his local Oklahoma City mosque, it would be good to see that our rulers are doing something about these terrorist incubators that are sprouting up like toxic weeds throughout the country, funded by Islamist supremacists in the Middle East… except that what they are doing is this: spending our money to provide extra security — not for us but for the mosques:

A recent announcement from the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) / Masjid Al-Rahmah advised that it will be receiving a grant from theNonprofit Security Grant Program administered through the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA):

ISB will be receiving $74,675.00 which will go towards upgrading, enhancing and adding to our security infrastructure. Over the next several months you will see contractors on-site conducting these security enhancements.

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) is nationwide and overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Part of DHS’s Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI), it has been in effect since 2005. To be eligible the organization must be, “determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security to be at high risk of terrorist attack due to their ideology, beliefs, or mission.” For fiscal year 2014, $13,000,000 was set aside for NSGP. The maximum amount that can be awarded to a single group is $75,000.

Is that all? I guess we infidel taxpayers can count ourselves as lucky.

Four Armed Men Enter a Bar and Demand Money; One Patron Hands Them Something That Leaves Two Men Running Off and Two Men Dead

Score one for the gun rights advocates. When four armed men came into a bar demanding cash, they probably weren’t counting on one of the patrons there also being armed, and killing two of the would-be robbers, with the other two running for their lives.

Four men entered EJ’s Place in Houston around closing 2:30 a.m. Saturday — but they weren’t paying customers.

The were armed and demanded money from the folks inside the bar.

But one customer decided to give these crooks something different.

The patron pulled out his own gun and began firing at the four men, KHOU-TV reported, adding that the intruders also fired weapons.

He had been in critical condition after being diagnosed with the virus in mid-September. People who have had contact with him have been isolated and are being monitored for symptoms.

Brown to Raise Our Gas Tax – Again

ANNAPOLIS, MD – On January 1, 2015, Marylanders will pay an additional 3.5 cents or more per gallon for gas and diesel as a result of Anthony Brown’s largest-ever motor fuel tax hike which includes automatic increases twice a year for years to come.

“Once again, career politician Lt. Gov. Brown proves to Maryland’s struggling families that he will say and do anything to get elected. Even before he is sworn in, Brown will break his promise to hardworking Marylanders by increasing the gas tax,” charged Hogan. “Gas prices continue to remain high and Marylanders feel real pain every time we fill up at the pump. We can’t afford another tax increase, but Lt. Gov. Brown will turn his back on the rest of us and increase them anyway.”

AAA-Mid Atlantic says Maryland is ranked 25th in the nation for the highest state motor fuel tax rate on gasoline purchases. By the time all of Brown’s gas tax increases go into effect, Maryland will have one of the highest motor fuel taxes in the country.

Democrats Will Pay the Price for Obama in November

Democrats are panicking, and rightly so. Going into the November congressional elections, voter opposition to Obama is worse than it was for George W. Bush and for Bill Clinton at their respective six-year marks, and Democrats can't unyoke themselves from him.

It's not just that Gallup's latest polls show Obama's policies are unpopular but that voters are planning to make a statement to that effect in November. Since 1998, Gallup has included a question to determine whether the voters are intending to use their vote to "send a message" that they either support or oppose the sitting president.

Gallup found that 32 percent of voters want their vote to communicate their opposition to Obama, whereas only 20 percent want it to reflect their support for him. This is the highest such "no vote" for a sitting president in the past 16 years.

ISLAMIST VERMIN WAS CASING A HIGH SCHOOL IN OKLAHOMA JUST FOUR DAYS BEFORE NEARBY BEHEADING

Just four days before the beheading of a White Christian lady by a Muslim wild animal in a food processing plant in Moore Oklahoma, another shifty Islamist piece of garbage showed up at a nearby high school asking suspicious questions. Common sense says he was casing the location for an attack on the innocent youngsters.

The man is described as in his forties with a heavy Arabic accent. If authorities are to be believed, he just happened to wander into the school which is only blocks from the site where Alton Nolen beheaded his victim and wounded another defenseless Christian lady before he was shot.

The thug was curious about the safety precautions taken by the school and how close it was to the nearest police station. Since there is no reason to believe he has a child in the school or was actually making inquires preparatory to enrolling a child, he was obviously on a scouting mission. If he actually was there innocently asking questions to insure the safety of his own child, that information would have been immediately offered by the police and the frightened principal. They would have used it to reinforce their, “Move along folks; nothing to see” ruse to “make this all go away.”

Obama on the ballot, to Democrats' chagrin

The Democratic embrace of coal and guns won’t fool anyone

President Obama can be credibly accused of many things, but not of an excess of modesty. With the control of the Senate on the line less than a month from now, Mr. Obama is turning the spotlight on himself. Disbelieving Democrats are terrified.

“Make no mistake,” says Mr. Obama, “these policies [of mine] are on the ballot, every single one of them.” Since he was at an taxpayer-funded event at a business school in Evanston, Ill., he made a ritual disclaimer. “This isn’t some official campaign speech, or political speech,” he said with a broad grin. “I’m not going to tell you who to vote for — although I suppose it is kind of implied.”

The only incumbent to file for re-election for council is Council President Lloyd Martin, who has been in office in 2002. Councilman Brent Ashley, elected in 2010, and Councilwoman Margaret Pillas, elected in 2006, have decided not to seek another term, and last week Councilman Joe Mitrecic submitted his resignation as he runs unopposed to represent Ocean City on the Worcester County Commission. Mitrecic served on the council from 2002-2010 and after losing in 2010 was elected back to the council in 2012.

FEMA Approves Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (S.A.F.E.R.) Grant Extension

Salisbury Mayor James Ireton, Jr. and Fire Chief Richard A. Hoppes are pleased to announce that FEMA has approved a performance period extension for the Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response (S.A.F.E.R.) Grant. The new grant performance period deadline is set for November 26, 2014. The original end date for the S.A.F.E.R. grant was October 16, 2014.

In 2011 the SFD applied for and was awarded $1.4 million, to fund twelve (12) uniformed firefighter/emergency medical technicians. Three of the grant funded positions were to hire three (3) personnel whose positions had been frozen since 2010 for economic reasons.

Over the two years since the grant was accepted, the department has hired nine (9) of the grant funded positions to full time permanent status. These opportunities came because of retirements and other forms of attrition experienced during the performance period. Throughout the grant performance period the department has been able to continually fill the S.A.F.E.R. positions and currently has twelve (12) filled positions.

The City will apply for additional grant funding from FEMA. However, the timing for applying for and receiving these grants has been delayed at the federal level; which has caused a significant gap between the end of the S.A.F.E.R. grant performance period and the ability to apply for and hopefully be awarded a new grant to fund these positions.

“Salisbury will be able to use unspent funds to run the S.A.F.E.R. grant for an additional 6 weeks" noted Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton. “The city is proud to have been able to hire many (9) of the original grant-funded positions to be permanent city firefighters. I have always made clear that these FEMA funds were grant monies, and would not be available in perpetuity. We are applying in the new FEMA S.A.F.E.R. grant round, which will begin in early 2015. I applaud the work of Chief Rick Hoppes for spending the grant money wisely and securing the extra 6 weeks of service from our FEMA firefighters.”

Woman Has Abortion Because She Couldn’t Fit Into Her Wedding Dress

In 2005, the Los Angeles Times ran a story by Stephanie Simon entitled “Offering Abortion, Rebirth.”

Simon interviewed an abortion provider named Dr. William F. Harrison and observed abortions at his clinic. Harrison died in 2010, after closing down his clinic because of health reasons.

The article quotes Harrison saying, “I am destroying life.”

Simon described witnessing an abortion on an 18-year-old girl. The author says the girl had not told her parents about her pregnancy. The unborn baby was 13 weeks along. At 13 weeks, the child has fingers, complete with fingernails. If female, the child has a uterus of her own. He or she can respond to touch and has both a heartbeat and brain waves. He can also suck his thumb. (See ultrasound pictures of 13-week-old babies here.)

It’s Not Unnatural for Republicans to Want the President Protected

"Even opposition lawmakers who have spent the last six years fighting his every initiative have expressed deep worry for his security."

So wrote the New York Times' Peter Baker in the lead paragraph of a story on the congressional hearing on the Secret Service.

Baker is an excellent reporter and a good writer, and so it's useful to consider the implications of his framing of the story. And let's leave aside his hyperbole about Republicans opposition "every initiative" -- some presidential initiatives are uncontroversial and widely supported -- and look at that word "even."

Contained within that word and in the snarky tone of the story is the assumption that if you are politically opposed to a president, you won't mind seeing him or his family murdered. After all, you're against him, so why would you feel "deep worry for his security"?

ISIS, Ebola — Americans can handle the truth

The Ebola virus is not a threat, but ISIS is. That’s what some of our leaders tell us. Should we believe them? Do they have a track record for truth-telling that would lend them credibility?

ISIS hasn’t (yet) invaded America, but Ebola has. We are bombing ISIS in Syria, but treating Ebola here as an interloper that can be controlled. There is nothing to worry about. No need to panic. Pay no attention to the disease behind the curtain. Experts are in charge and we must always trust our experts. Do you? I sure don’t.

Sometimes it seems the priority of our elected officials and experts is self-protection rather than the protection of the public, which they are supposed to serve. We only know what they tell us. We presume they have access to accurate information, but we only get their version of the truth.

Government officials testify before congressional committees and either deny responsibility for their own incompetence and malfeasance, blame others, hide behind the all-purpose “mistakes were made,” or take the Fifth. A few accept “responsibility,” but only in rare cases does anyone lose their job, unless their transgressions are so glaring they can’t be ignored, like Julia Pierson, former director of the Secret Service. If politicians and bureaucrats protected us the way they protect themselves, there would be no need to fear Ebola, ISIS or anything else.

In the case of Ebola, our leaders want us to remain unconcerned. They have it under control, they say. And yet infected people keep popping up. Not to worry, they say. We can trust West African nations to examine those leaving their countries, even though it appears we can’t. Thomas Eric Duncan managed to get out of Liberia and travel to the U.S. with relative ease.

Teacher Indoctrination

Students at several Jefferson County, Colorado, high schools walked out to protest the school board's recently proposed curriculum review committee that seeks to promote patriotism, respect for authority, free enterprise, plus the positive aspects of U.S. history.

The teachers union, whose members forced two high schools to close by calling in sick, is against the implementation of performance-based pay. The union has encouraged and applauded student protests against what it's calling academic censorship.

The average parent and taxpayer has little idea of what is being taught to our youngsters. In February 2006, I wrote a column titled "Indoctrination of Our Youth," followed in March with "Youth Indoctrination Update." Both columns focused on rants that a student secretly had recorded of a geography teacher at another Colorado school — Overland High School in Aurora. The teacher was Jay Bennish. He told his students that President George W. Bush's State of the Union address sounded "a lot like the things that Adolf Hitler used to say."

State of Maryland Gubernatorial Debate - Anthony Brown versus Larry Hogan

In case you were unable to view last nights debate here it is. The debate starts at about the 2:30 time mark.

Be Compassionate

I had a patient a number of years ago in my career as a heart surgeon who was 101 years old. He lived on a small farm in Port Townsend, WA, on the other side of Puget Sound from Seattle, with his 96-year-old wife. This fellow, George Crosby, kept up his farm work, which included looking after some cattle and tending a stand of fruit trees and a bean field, until he had so much trouble breathing that he had to be admitted to the hospital. He was in the hospital’s intensive care unit when I met him undergoing treatment for congestive heart failure caused by severe aortic stenosis. His aortic valve had become extremely thickened and scarred, blocking the flow of blood out of his heart. With blood backing up into his lungs, he was now unable to breathe comfortably even with continuous intravenous medications and oxygen. Despite his advanced age I agreed to perform open heart surgery on him and replace the valve. This was the only way he would be able to leave the hospital, alive. Some of my medical colleagues argued that this patient was too old to undergo heart surgery and that he shouldn’t have it. To their surprise, however, this indomitable centenarian came through his aortic valve replacement without any trouble. He left the intensive care two days after his operation. On the 3rd postop day, asked how he was feeling as he walked down the hall unaided, George replied, “I’m not tip top.” He made a smooth, uncomplicated recovery and was discharged from the hospital eight days later. Six weeks later he resumed all his farm chores with renewed vigor.

Awed and inspired by his incredible resilience and spirit, I asked George Crosby to please tell me, if he could, how he had done it. How had he been able to maintain such good health that would enable him to withstand open heart surgery at his age? Without missing a beat, George told me that his philosophy of life was this: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you—and do it first.” He accepted life as it is and was not given to judgmental thinking. He did not harbor regrets for the past or concerns about the future. He lived in the eternal present. He said that he had wanted to be an engineer but his father put him out to work after the eighth grade, and he worked contentedly at a Pacific Northwest lumber mill. He was quick to forgive but, as his wife later told me, slow to forget. When his son was having difficulties in high school he pulled him out and put him to work logging their property. After a year of this backbreaking work and the boy happily resumed his education, graduated from college and became a bank executive. (This now 76-year-old son was sitting with his mother in the surgical family waiting area when I came out to speak to them after the surgery.)

These Are The 10 Worst States to Retire In

Maryland and Vermont rank among the worst places to retire on Bankrate's list for a variety of reasons.

Both have relatively high costs of living and high state and local taxes. Maryland's crime rate also is worse than the national average, and Vermont's weather could be tough on a lot of retirees. Temperatures have been an average of 43.1 degrees in Vermont from 1981 to 2010, making it one of the coldest states in the country.

Of course, those drawbacks may not be enough to dissuade lovers of Maryland crab cakes or Vermont's rolling blue-green hills.

School Board Criticizes First Lady for Lunch Regulations: ‘It’s a Broken System’

More public schools are voicing their distaste for the new federal restrictions on kids' lunches and snacks set forth by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

The new regulations, championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, were intended to improve "the critical nutrition and hunger safety net for millions of children." The standards have been criticized, however, for failing to take into account how diets differ from student to student:

"Recommended calorie intakes differ from child to child based upon their weight, height and level of physical activity," argued the Tonawanda News. Lunch entrees are not to exceed 350 calories and snacks, just 200 calories.

Maryland Toll Revenues Surge

Toll revenues have increased close to 75% in the past 4 years, according to data released by the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The Maryland Transportation Authority reported $276.6 million in toll revenues from in fiscal year 2009 from seven facilities and $308.5million in FY2010. In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 after toll increases were in place, revenue from the same facilities had increased to $411.5. Budget forecasts predicted these facilities would produce $540.3million in FY2014, a 75% increase since 2010.

MDTA estimates that recent toll increases have reduced the number of transaction (ie toll road use) by 6.2%. The higher rates more than made up for the lost revenues.

Paris isn't the happiest place on earth for Disney right now.

For the second time in three years, Walt Disney (DIS) has been forced to ride to the rescue of Disneyland Paris -- this time by leading a billion euro ($1.25 billion) refinancing of park operator Euro Disney.

Since opening in 1992, the theme park east of Paris has become Europe's top tourist attraction by visitor numbers.

But the dream has turned into a nightmare for Disney and other investors.

Attendance has been hit by Europe's economic crisis, leaving the company struggling to invest in new attractions while servicing its massive debts.
