Area Jobs Aren't Paying the Rent!

By Thornton Crowe

A couple weeks ago in the Daily Times, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity, Molly Hilligoss, wrote a telling opinion piece stating clearly, "...convenience store jobs can't lift Wicomico residents out of poverty." Unfortunately, she is absolutely spot on and yet local politicians continue to ignore this truth over and over again.

In the piece, she broke down the reality of convenience store economics as a way to answer the news of the new Royal Farms slated for the corner of College and South Salisbury Boulevard. However, if you really think about it, it also explains the working model of both City and County politicians when they speak of things like folk music festivals, which only produce jobs during show dates. These temporary jobs don't offer voters anymore certainty or stability than a traveling circus, yet, they (the local politicians) think it's a grand boost to our economy as if the 72-hour ordeal will makeup for all the other times of the year when local workers can't pay to survive.

The only benefactor of a permanent position from this festival extravaganza is the gal who is the supposed manager because surely Day will make her position permanent, even when she's ill-equipped to handle something as massive as a festival. This doesn't help the local economy in the big picture but who cares as long as it looks good in the now. Warm fuzzy moments abound!

If the local politicians had been all that concerned about the economy, why didn't they do more to keep Steel Services or Brainwave Computers open?

Need you be reminded of Labinal, Crown Cork & Seal, Chris Craft and Dresser -- all companies that provided good paying, permanent local positions whom for one reason or another, moved out of the area? Our so called leaders are partially responsible for not finding workable solutions which would woo companies into staying here and employing their voting base. Instead, they are now looking for the short-term booster shots which offer no long term solutions which only produce temporary work not career jobs in the area.

Hilligoss states these low-paying jobs available now in Salisbury don't even meet their lowered standards for homeownership but this doesn't seem to inspire the local political class into creating a fertile business environment for new companies to give the area a chance. While there may be lots of openings, most local companies don't last long due to high taxes, local political red tape and over-regulation. In the end, economy-boosting companies always choose to go to more business-friendly areas, leaving both City and County residents high and dry.

All the free college tuitions in the world won't stop this mass exodus if the local government doesn't get a handle on how to solicit quality companies to come and stay in the area. Better yet, isn't it time for you to expect your elected officials to do more traditional efforts for their voting base and quit pinning all their hopes on fly-by-night ventures like festivals?

Low-paying jobs don't buy voter confidence...

One would think local politicians would want their constituents to be satisfied with their lots in life because happy voters don't usually switch horses. Statistically speaking, 86% of the time, incumbents keep their day job but it's only contingent on if the voters are happy on a long-term basis. Therefore, why are local politicians playing political roulette with midterms so close on the horizon?

Remove the Ray Lewis statue in front of Ravens stadium

I want the Ray Lewis statue at Ravens Stadium removed because of his refusal to stand during the National Anthem. That song honors our country and our veterans who fought for it. To kneel during it is disrespectful, regardless of what you are protesting. I will not stand for that kind of disrespect towards our country, especially from a legend such as Ray Lewis. You stand for the National Anthem as a salute to those who can't stand because they fought for this land.

Go Here for petition.

Wicomico County Announces Changes to Local Fire Marshal’s Office

At the Salisbury City Council meeting of October 9, 2017, new ordinances were passed that will directly affect and change the way business is conducted within the corporate limits of the City of Salisbury. As determined by the Mayor and City Council, Wicomico County will no longer be performing the fire safety functions and duties typical of the local Fire Marshal’s Office within the corporate limits of the City of Salisbury.

All business dealings for these functions will now be handled by the following Departments within the City of Salisbury government structure: Department of Infrastructure and Development (410-548-3170); Housing and Community Development Department (410-341-9550); and the Salisbury Fire Department (410-548-3120). Any questions should be directed to these City Departments.

A Viewer Writes: Another Lost Opportunity

Joe

I'm forwarding this article for you and your readers to see what Salisbury is missing out on. I know some of the people who were involved in this decision by Dixon Valve. Now mind you Dixon Valve has had a long history with the town of Chestertown.

My argument is we have an industrial park that is vacant. We have very few good paying jobs. Where is our mayor? Why isn't he out meeting with folks like this to sell Salisbury. Salisbury would have been the ideal location for this new facility. So now we have another missed opportunity to bring good paying jobs to our town while our mayor plays tiddlywinks and promotes music festivals that aren't going to happen.

Thank you for giving the average Salisbury citizen a place to voice our concerns in our community.

Richard A. Henson Foundation Announces $2.5 Million Gift for SU Science and Technology Programs

SALISBURY, MD---The Richard A. Henson Foundation, Inc. today reaffirmed its commitment to Salisbury University, announcing a $2.5 million gift for SU’s Richard A. Henson School of Science and Technology.

A pioneer in the commuter aviation industry, Henson endowed the school bearing his name with another multi-million-dollar donation in 1987. This latest marks the 30th anniversary of that initial commitment.

“The Richard A. Henson Foundation continues to uphold its namesake’s values and philanthropic beliefs throughout the community and specifically at Salisbury University,” said SU President Janet Dudley-Eshbach. “Mr. Henson’s support made possible the outstanding science and technology programs we offer today. We are proud that his legacy continues not only on campus, but through the many students and alumni who have benefitted from his generosity over the past three decades.”

Ten years after his initial endowment, Henson donated another $1 million for new science equipment. In 2011, the Henson Foundation announced an additional $1 million gift to establish the University’s Richard A. Henson Medical Simulation Center. Today, that legacy continues.

“The Richard A. Henson Foundation is extremely pleased to continue and expand our commitment to Salisbury University and the Henson School of Science and Technology,” said Victor Laws, chair of the Henson Foundation’s board of trustees. “Our new gift will establish or enhance the following programs: student scholarships, a science and math honors program, undergraduate and faculty research, and student conference travel. Our gift will also help fund a new high-performance computer lab, and assist in the repair and replacement of critical Henson School instructional equipment.”

A Viewer Writes: Riverwalk Pictures

Joe,

I was sitting at the drive up at Suntrust bank today remembering this Spring’s “Investment” in the Salisbury Downtown Riverwalk, when they dressed up the banks, made rip-rap shorelines, then built the berm, brought in rounded river rock borders , mulched and planted decorative plants to “enhance” the banks of our river downtown. Then I looked up and saw the results the summer maintenance brought us.

Why was any money spent at all?

Obama’s Chicago Presidential Library Has No Records for Scholars to View

As Chicago gears up for the opening of President Barack Obama’s new presidential library, news has leaked that Obama doesn’t intend to move all his records, manuscripts and papers there. The announcement has sparked questions of just how useful a presidential library is if there isn’t anything for scholars to research.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Obama library seems more like a playland, than a presidential archive.

The facility will house, “a children’s play garden, sledding hill, green spaces for picnics and outdoor gatherings, basketball courts and even a recording studio,” the paper reported.

The Truth Behind WBOC & WMDT's Recent Cable Issues

I especially liked this part from the FCC regarding television licensing:

FAIRNESS DOCTRINE’

According to a fact sheet on the FCC website, when reviewing licenses the agency must determine if a renewal is in the public interest.

The FCC said in the fact sheet it expects “station licensees to be aware of the important problems and issues facing their local communities and to foster public understanding by presenting programming that relates to those local issues.

Publishers Notes: We've all seen it, especially lately. Local television stations are spending more time on news from California, Chicago and elsewhere. They are not providing enough local content and even when they do cover local content it's all BS fluff stuff and not even news. It certainly isn't "fair and balanced". While these television stations cry that they are being treated unfairly, THERE ARE RULES. WBOC's local Fox News station broadcasts mainly OTHER Liberal stations news and when do you ever see a FOX Affiliate/Reporter reporting on that station?

Crime is obviously important to locals, especially rapes. NONE of this is being covered. It's about time someone stand up to our local mainstream media.

U.S. Attorney General Says Cannabis Is Not a Gateway Drug

On Tuesday, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch acknowledged that the consumption of cannabis does not lead a person to use harder drugs. Lynch’s public statement may be the clearest repudiation yet of the mythical “gateway theory” originally fabricated by drug czar Harry Anslinger in the 1950s.

Lynch made the statement during a town hall meeting in Richmond, Ky., where she discussed the dangers of opioid abuse with a group of high-school teens. In the course of that discussion, talk soon turned to the question of cannabis. Tyler Crafton, a student at Madison Central High School, asked Lynch whether she thought that recreational use of cannabis among high school kids would lead to opioid abuse.

“There a lot of discussion about marijuana these days,” Lynch responded. “Some states are making it legal, people are looking into medical uses for it, and I understand that it still is as common as almost anything. When we talk about heroin addiction, we usually, as we have mentioned, are talking about individuals that started out with a prescription drug problem, and then because they need more and more, they turn to heroin. It isn’t so much that marijuana is the step right before using prescription drugs or opioids.”

Titans’ Rishard Matthews: I’ll Leave Football If They Make Me Stand For Anthem

Careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Liberals are infamous for threatening to leave the country if the wrong person is elected as president. They almost never do, sadly. Now, that threat has moved to the NFL. Tennessee Titans wide receiver Rishard Matthews is threatening to quit the NFL if he is forced to stand for the National Anthem. Oh, please do! Just do it! Then don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. He made the threat yesterday when asked by Matt Parker, a local Nashville producer, on Twitter whether he would stay in the locker room, or take the fine or penalty for kneeling during the anthem. Matthews’ profile picture on Twitter features his half-brother, Christopher Ruiz, who died in Afghanistan in 2015.

Matthews said this in answer to the question… it was captured by Clay Travis of Outkick the Coverage, before Matthews deleted it: “No I will be done playing football.” Let’s see if he’s man enough, or radical racist enough, to stand by that statement. I double-dog dare him to quit. He’s vowing to throw a tantrum and quit if he doesn’t get his way. How mature. Should he keep his word, it will cost him millions. He would be walking away from football permanently like Colin Kaepernick. If he’s that repulsed by America, he needs to go and stay gone. He’s paid over $6.3 million and hates his country. Go figure.

Salesman Who Sold Gun To Las Vegas Shooter: 'Could I Have Stopped This? No'

Like many Americans, Chris Michel woke up Monday morning to the horrific news of the massacre in Las Vegas, which left 58 people dead as well as the shooter Stephen Paddock and nearly 500 injured.

Michel, who owns Dixie GunWorx, tells NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro that he remembers Paddock coming into his store on three occasions earlier this year. Michel says he spends a lot of time talking with his customers, so he can screen them. To him, Paddock didn't seem suspicious, or off in any way. So Michel sold him a gun.

Authorities have identified 47 firearms owned by Paddock — and one of them, a shotgun, was sold to him by Michel.

Now in the aftermath of the mass shooting, Michel is doing some soul searching. He discusses with Lulu all that has been going through his mind since he heard the identity of the shooter.

Resort Officials Call Route 90 Dualization ‘Critical’ For Public Safety

SNOW HILL – The Town of Ocean City came before the Worcester County Commissioners and state highway officials this week to make a case for prioritizing the dualization of Route 90.

On Tuesday, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan and other resort officials appeared before the commissioners following an annual visit from the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to request the dualization of Route 90 be placed at the top of the county’s priority list.

For years, Ocean City officials have advocated for expanding the highway and its bridges from two lanes to four to facilitate the flow of traffic both entering and exiting the resort.

Meehan said the dualization would address public safety concerns along Route 90.

There Were Not Seven Murders In Salisbury, I Was Wrong

There were seven people charged with murder.

While I had stated we hadn't confirmed the information, I was wrong. We are not afforded the convenience to speak directly with Chief Duncan, Sheriff Lewis or Mayor Day, our source was inaccurate and got the numbers wrong.

SOME STATES (Maryland, Michigan & Arizona) ARE ALLOWING MUSLIM STUDENTS TO PRAY DURING SCHOOL HOURS

IF THEY ALLOW THAT, THEN WE SHOULD BRING BACK OUR FLAGS INTO THE CLASSROOMS AND ALLOW OTHERS TO PRAY TOO!
TIME FOR THE CHRISTIANS TO SPEAK UP & DEMAND THEIR RIGHTS.

When we get 100,000,000, that's one hundred million, willing Christians to BOND together, voice their concerns and vote, we can take back America with God's help.
Become one of the One hundred million.
Then let's get 200 million. It can be done just by sending this email to your friends.
Do the math.

It only takes a single willing heart and a fed-up SOUL.
God Bless America and Shine your light on Her!
In 1952 President Truman established one day a year as a "National Day of Prayer.

In 1988 President Reagan designated the first Thursday in May of each year as The National Day of Prayer.
In June 2007, then Presidential Candidate Barack Obama declared that the USA "Was no longer a Christian nation.
In May 2009 President Obama dismissed our 21st annual National Day of Prayer ceremony at the White House under the ruse of "not wanting to offend anyone".
Sept. 25, 2009, a Muslim Prayer Day was held on the West front of the U.S. Capitol Building, the site where U.S. Presidents have been inaugurated since 1981.
There were over 50,000 Muslims in D.C. that day President Obama dismissed our National Day of Prayer and now it is okay for an event at our capitol for Islamists? I for one was offended. But wait, it did not stop!!!
February 17-19, 2015, a Muslim prayer was recited at the start of the second day of the White House summit on “Countering Violent Extremism,” but no other religious text was presented during the portion of the event that was open to the press.
Imam Sheikh Sa’ad Musse Roble, president of the World Peace Organization in Minneapolis, Minn., recited a “verse from the Quran” following remarks by Obama administration officials and Democrat members of Congress.
Former President Obama encouraged schools to teach the Quran for extra credit, while at the same time, we cannot even talk about the Bible, God, pray, or salute the American Flag.
The direction this country was headed should strike fear in the heart of every Christian.

How refreshing and beautiful our First Lady Melania Trump was in Melbourne, Florida on February 18, 2017.
Instead of the normal “pumping up” of the crowd, Melania chose to start the rally off with the Lord’s Prayer.
It sounded more like the start of a football game after the National Anthem rather than what we would expect to hear after a prayer.
Make a “joyful noise unto the LORD thy GOD!”
The “sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity” of Madeline Murray O’Hair and ACLU efforts in 1962, "School Prayer was removed from the U.S. public education system by slowly changing the meaning of the First Amendment through a number of court cases over several court cases should be confronted and reversed.

NO ONE would ever be challenged and your tax dollars would all end up in the Good Ol' Boys pockets without ANY accountability. By voicing your comments, (even anonymously) believe me, I know for a FACT that our elected officials are listening.

Let's also NOT FORGET, every one of the news media mentioned above endorsed 100% people who were NOT elected in the last election while SBYNews endorsed every single elected official that won with the exception of ONE, from the President on down the line.

TOGETHER we do make a difference and that is a FACT!

Bill and Hillary Clinton 'haven't spoken for months'

The former President threw a manuscript in the trash after Hillary ignored his advice not to publish it, according to author Ed Klein.

Bill had red-penned the book in an attempt to improve it, a friend allegedly told Klein, but flew into a rage when Hillary refused to read any of his notes.

He Couldn’t Believe How Much More Food The Person Behind Him Was Buying With Food Stamps

While shopping for his weekly groceries, a man noticed something strange. The person in line behind him had so much more food than him, yet they were not paying for the groceries with their own money. Instead, they were relying on government benefits to provide food for their family. Angered that this person was getting a better deal than him despite his efforts to work hard, he snapped a picture comparing the contents of his grocery cart against the other EBT person’s cart. Then he shared the images on Facebook and the post quickly went viral.

Patrick Gibson is just like a lot of other Americans. He has his head down and works hard to provide for his family. He doesn’t like to take handouts and as a result, he has to work long hours at difficult jobs.

But when he saw someone shopping at his local grocery store with a cart loaded with extravagant items, he couldn’t help but be envious. But when he saw how they were paying – with their food stamp card – he felt cheated. Why was this person getting benefits when he wasn’t? Why did he have to work for his food while this person got a check from the government every month? He didn’t think it was fair especially because he said they were buying “such items like steak and some other very nice choices of food.”

Gibson on the other hand was purchasing fruit and diapers for his children. Gibson’s posted continues as follows:

Hillary condemns Harvey Weinstein but keeps his cash

Hillary Clinton broke six days of silence on the Harvey Weinstein scandal hours after he was alleged to have committed three rapes, saying she was 'shocked and appalled' - but saying nothing about returning his tainted donations.

The 2016 presidential loser issued a statement through her spokesman saying his behavior 'cannot be tolerated' - shortly after Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Joloie said they too were victims.

'I was shocked and appalled by the revelations about Harvey Weinstein,' Clintoin said.

'The behavior described by the women coming forward cannot be tolerated. Their courage and the support of others is critical in helping to stop this kind of behaviour.'

Her statement ended silence but left open the crucial issue of the vast amount of cash Weinstein donated directly to her and her family, and brought in frm his celebrity friends.

Where The Hell Is Everyone?

We all have heard at one time or another, "karma is a bitch". Well I can tell you first hand, the mainstream media and network television is lying to all Americans and certainly we the people of the Eastern Shore.

I thought for the heck of it that I would travel around the local beer gardens in the Ocean City area to see just what kind of impact we the people are having on local bars. So I went out on Sunday and Monday night to see and even ask local managers how the NFL kneeling was impacting them.

Some local bars are closing their doors during the games, that's a fact. The impact is incredible, yet no one seems to be covering it. Your local media would like you to believe things are simply normal and they are not.

Now am I interested in talking about businesses hurting, absolutely not. However, it's a reality and truth and that is exactly what SBYNews is all about. This hasn't just impacted NFL television ratings, it's destroying the Bar Industry and if there's ANY finger pointing it should be pointed at the NFL for destroying what has always been well known to be a HUGE entertainment business, especially during football season.

There is not one person I have spoken to over the past few weeks that is in fact watching the games and I'm being very serious. Now I'm sure there are some who are but none that I have spoken to and I speak to a lot of people each and every day.

That being said, each and every one of you reading this need to think deep and recognize just how strong Americans are truly feeling about the NFL's decision to slap us in the face AND the financial impact this has placed on businesses. I, for one, will be dedicated to no longer watching Football from here on out. I stand with my President and all of the VFW's and others who fought and even lost their lives for America. I will not ever lose or bend my beliefs in America and what we stand for.

The Dolphins Cave: Players Are No Longer Allowed to Protest the Anthem

Apparently some people at the National Football League have determined that they can’t lose anymore money, or, alternately, they’ve seen the light and have discovered that perhaps allowing players to break the rules and disrespect the country is probably not a good thing.

Either way, the Miami Dolphins’ head coach is now putting his foot down on the kneeling nonsense and telling his players that they need to stand for the National Anthem. Naturally, there are people who are upset about this, but the rest of us realize that the owner is making a decision based on the team’s best interests and not the political interests of individual players.

Assateague Island Officials ‘Heartbroken’ Over Jester’s Death

BERLIN – A horse was struck and killed near the bridge at Assateague Island National Seashore Thursday evening.

Park officials announced today that at about 8 p.m. Thursday, the 18-year-old stallion known as Jester was hit and killed on the causeway near the Verrazzano Bridge.

“We’re heartbroken,” said Assateague Island National Seashore Superintendent Deborah Darden “We’re so sorry to have lost Jester.”

Though the accident is still under investigation, Darden said the horse was struck by a 2005 Honda Element driven by a 70-year-old woman from Silver Spring. Darden said the woman informed park officials of the accident as soon as it occurred and told them she hadn’t seen the animal standing in the road.

Temple University student shot dead by Miami police after she runs over officer

A Temple University student was shot and killed by police in Miami Beach on Sunday after she charged her car toward the officers, striking and injuring one — an incident a witness said “played out like a movie set.”

Cariann Denise Hithon, 22, was driving her black BMW when she crashed into several cars in South Beach, a popular tourist district, police said. Hithon ran the red light and was traveling “at some rate of speed,” police said. Michael Davis, who witnessed the chaotic scene, told WSVN Hithon repeatedly rear-ended cars.

“She rear-ended it, and after she rear-ended it, she drove off,” Davis told WSVN. “She actually drove off again and ran over a police officer, and after that, shots were fired.”

Another witnessed captured Hithon hitting Officer David Cajuso.

Miguel Garcia, another witness, recalled: “So everyone is like, ‘Oh my God! Oh my God!’ And people started running after her car. Like she wanted to escape no matter what.”

Detroit Firefighter Fired for Bringing 'Racially Insensitive' Watermelon to Work

A Detroit firefighter was fired before he officially began his first day on the job for bringing a watermelon to work.

Robert Pattison, 41, introduced himself to his fellow firefighters at Engine 55 at the corner of Joy and Southfield in Detroit by bringing a welcome gift, WJBK reported.

Second Battalion Chief Shawn McCarty calls this welcome gift “a tradition” for Engine 55’s firefighters.

“It’s not mandatory, it’s voluntary,” he said. “You come in bearing gifts. The usual gift is doughnuts, but you are allowed to bring whatever you want to bring in.”

Pattison, who was a probationary firefighter, decided to stand out from the crowd and bring a watermelon with a pink bow on top.

Some black firefighters were reportedly offended by Pattison’s gesture since 90 percent of the firefighters at Engine 55 are black.

“When you get your first detail at a firehouse you pretty much know what you are getting yourself into,” said Patrick Trout. “So you would have to say it was probably a bad call.”

CNN FANTASIZES ABOUT REMOVING TRUMP FROM OFFICE

Grasping at straws by suggesting 25th amendment could be invoked

Programming on CNN and MSNBC Thursday was replete with fantasies about invoking the 25th amendment and removing President Trump from office.

Blitzer turned to correspondent Jessica Schneider and asked her to “Tell our viewers who aren’t familiar with the 25th Amendment, Jessica, precisely what it does.”

Schneider then launched into a Democrat’s wet dream scenario:
