I'm forwarding this article for you and your readers to see what Salisbury is missing out on. I know some of the people who were involved in this decision by Dixon Valve. Now mind you Dixon Valve has had a long history with the town of Chestertown.
My argument is we have an industrial park that is vacant. We have very few good paying jobs. Where is our mayor? Why isn't he out meeting with folks like this to sell Salisbury. Salisbury would have been the ideal location for this new facility. So now we have another missed opportunity to bring good paying jobs to our town while our mayor plays tiddlywinks and promotes music festivals that aren't going to happen.
Thank you for giving the average Salisbury citizen a place to voice our concerns in our community.

Publishers Notes: I'll add, where was Dave Ryan (SWED) and what kind of relationship does he have with the Governors Office.
They don't care, they have jobs.
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad that so many of you just don't get it. Salisbury is dead. The only jobs are service/tourism positions unless you have an advanced professional degree (doctor/lawyer/dentist/veterinarian). There is nothing here to attract manufacturing or scientific industries.
ReplyDeleteSWED has been a waste of time and money for years.
ReplyDelete10:10 AM Tourism? This isn't a tourist destination.
ReplyDelete10:10 even doctors/lawyers/dentists and veterinarians who are looking to expand their practices are having a hell of a time finding someone to come on board. They are advertising and putting the word out at all the universities with little to no results.
ReplyDeleteThe #1 Reason-The area stinks, literally. People aren't interested into moving to the lower Eastern Shore because they don't want to work, live and raise a family in what has become a toxic waste dump due to the chicken industry.
The only thing that Salisbury has against new businesses moving here is the Politians and the "Good Ole Boys". They will lose their power and control. Salisbury has better schools than a lot of areas even with our irresponsible school board. There are a College and a University here. Even with the incompetency of the hospital they are a regional trauma center.
ReplyDelete10:20 Maybe you should read this blog more often. Dog shows/softball tournaments/triathlons/cycling races are tourism. They bring visitors to this area.
ReplyDeleteThe chicken industry has been here before and after the manufacturing jobs. You sound like a comehere liberal that moved to the country but found out what country smells like.
ReplyDeleteLocating a business in Maryland is a nightmare. How is a large company going to attract employees to a city that has become a renters haven and full of crime and gangs. Even our home grown businesses like Perdue are staying outside of the City limits with their new office complex in Delaware.
ReplyDeleteMost likely Dave Ryan and Jakey Day were working a 'Circle Jerk' with Gillis-Gilkerson somewhere downtown where nobody would see them?
ReplyDeleteNo one takes this joke of a mayor seriously.
ReplyDeleteHe can't compete against other towns and mayors
10:49 Hardly a liberal. Haven't voted for a democrat in 30 years and won't ever again. Donate heavily to conservative causes and candidates both local and nationwide including other states' local races. Just speaking the truth. It's asinine to compare chicken farming of yesteryears with what it has become today.
ReplyDeleteSALISBURY not business friendly. Taxes crime grass police.
ReplyDeleteWhat's "this decision by Dixon Valve"? Details please.
ReplyDeleteWhy would Dixon Valve want to build a warehouse distribution center in Wicomico County -- almost 2 hours drive from their plant?
ReplyDelete11:51 Then you ain't so smart if you are a conservative and live in a liberal state that has only had a few republican governors ever all of which got nothing done.
ReplyDeletedave ryan? oh he's the guy who for years has been milking the crap outta wico county and done nothing! how can I get that job?
ReplyDeleteof course now the cats out of the bag ain't it dave? retirement? will you also be getting a pension paid for by the good citizens of this county? nothing like rubbing salt in the wounds huh?
I agree that Ryan is a nincompoop, but there's no way that a company in Chestertown would want to put its distribution warehouse in or near Salisbury
ReplyDeleteWe live so close to Sussex County Delaware and it is booming. The housing market there is crazy ( cheaper property taxes and no sprinkler law). Maryland in general has lost touch with reality. Everyone I know who lives in the Salisbury area want to move to Northern Worcester county so there kids can go to school there. Wicomico County and especially Salisbury is becoming so ghetto it's crazy.

ReplyDelete1:40 and 4:02 have zeroed in on the facts about the Dixon decision. Based in Chestertown, there would have to be compelling reasons to put their new distribution center away from their plant.
It's good news for their town and our state, but geography wouldn't favor Salisbury for this facility.
Elements of the post and other comments may hold some water but not in this instance.
To 5:48 Observer - I absolutely agree. Have you seen the vast amounts of commercial buildings currently being built in DE just north of the Maryland line? I am absolutely shocked at the number of new businesses locating into this geographic enclave of Delaware.
ReplyDelete9:50 where in DE? Selbyville area?
ReplyDeleteDon't forget that Burlington Coat Factory wanted the Old Mall property to build a store on.And yes I know that most of you are against retail jobs, but anything is better than nothing.
ReplyDelete5:48 add to it a environmental agency who works with developers.
ReplyDeleteThe reason that industrial park is vacant is because no business in their right mind wants to pay city and county taxes. That is dumb and I don't blame them. Not only that crime is out of hand and out of control in Salisbury which is a ghetto. They also know that Salisbury proper is nothing but rental properties and with it comes higher crime rates. Those higher crime rates are not in the county. Again a better reason for Wicomico County to start the water and sewer commissions.
ReplyDeleteNow if the county would put up their own industrial parks and offer water and sewer then you will see many businesses coming to Wicomico County. And that is the county, not Salisbury.
