Gowdy: Sidney Blumenthal, Hillary Clinton Sent Classified Info

House Benghazi committee chairman Trey Gowdy (R., S.C.) has accused Hillary Clinton confidante Sid Blumenthal of outing a CIA source in Libya, and using his close ties to the then-secretary of state to profit from the 2011 American intervention that brought down Moammar Qaddafi.

Yesterday, Gowdy sent a fiery letter accusing Elijah Cummings (D., Md.), the ranking Democrat on the Benghazi committee, of improperly politicizing the committee’s 17-month investigation by selectively leaking information. In the face of Democratic calls to disband the committee, Gowdy’s letter sought to justify the committee’s existence by highlighting some of its key findings.

In particular, Gowdy pointed to the committee’s substantial collection of e-mails between Secretary Clinton and Blumenthal, who had been specifically barred from working at the State Department by White House officials. Gowdy noted that approximately half of all of Clinton’s messages pertaining to Libya were between her and Blumenthal, prompting him to label the former journalist “Secretary Clinton’s primary advisor” on U.S. policy in the North-African country.

Between the start of the Libyan uprising and the time when American missiles first hit Tripoli, Blumenthal lobbied tirelessly for a U.S. military intervention against the Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. “Perhaps more disturbing is that at the same time Blumenthal was pushing Secretary Clinton to war in Libya,” Gowdy wrote, “he was privately pushing a business interest of his own in Libya that stood to profit from contracts with the new Libyan government — a government that would exist only after a successful U.S. intervention in Libya that deposed Qaddafi.”

‘Interrupting Whiteness’: National Education Conference to Blame White Teachers and Students for School Woes

Obama wanted "a national conversation on race." This conference is what he meant: "interrupting whiteness" in American schools, "challenging white supremacy," and eliminating the "white privilege" of Caucasian students.

A major national conference for teachers and school administrators starting on Saturday, October 10, in Baltimore will focus exclusively on race and racism, featuring workshops on “interrupting whiteness” in American schools, the “dominance of White supremacy” in society, “White privilege” enjoyed by Caucasian students, “white domination of thought,” and how to “decenter whiteness.”
The conference, officially titled The National Summit for Courageous Conversation 2015, is organized by thePacific Educational Group (PEG), a large and influential consulting firm hired by hundreds of school districts nationwide — often under pressure from the federal government — to address “racial gaps” in scholastic performance and behavior problems in the classroom.
But don’t take my word for it.
Below are excerpts taken from the official program of the upcoming National Summit for Courageous Conversation 2015, as well as examples taken from earlier Summits in 2014 and 2011, accompanied by direct screenshots of the text as it appears in the programs. You can confirm this by viewing the official 2015 program itself as uploaded by Pacific Educational Group, as well as pdfs of the 2014 Summit program and the 2011 program still archived at the Summit’s own Web site.
This first example is a prototypical workshop at the National Summit for Courageous Conversation; is this the kind of race-obsessed confrontational philosophy that should be guiding instruction and curricula in the nation’s public schools?
White Privilege, White Responsibility: Deepening Our Commitment as White Allies in the Struggle for Racial Equity in Schools
To achieve racial equity in schools, all educators must be able to identify and communicate where their own personal whiteness plays out in classroom, school, and community systems. Deepen your ability to focus a critical lens on your own whiteness and privilege and see how they impact your life. Through the tenets of Critical Race Theory, analyze how society constructs whiteness as the dominant norm in the U.S. Explore what it means to be a white educator leading for racial equity without perpetuating a system of white dominance.

Atheists Torpedo Student Choirs for Christmas

A Wisconsin-based atheist group helped kill a 25-year Christmas tradition for choir students in an Oregon public school district.

The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights has been held in Portland, Oregon, for over two decades, featuring choirs from churches, schools and other organizations. The event is held in a botanical garden and Catholic shrine.

A complaint filed in the district by the Freedom from Religion Foundation prompted officials to ban all school choirs from performing at the festival, the Oregonian reported Thursday.

Lawyers reviewed the atheists group’s complaint and concluded the legal risk of continuing the annual tradition was too much for the district to accept. Teachers were informed of the decision last month.

“It was a sad decision for us to make and it was a hard decision,” Portland Public Schools District spokeswoman Christine Miles told the newspaper on Thursday. “If we know there is a legal risk and we don’t do anything, then that’s not the right thing to do.”

The 'Real' Minimum Wage Exposed: Urban Outfitters Asks Staff To Work Weekends For Free

It appears there is a minimum wage threshold below President Obama's mandated thresholds that are "fair" and "livable." As NYPost reportsUrban Outfitters has asked workers at the company’s home office to "volunteer" for extra weekend shifts at a new fulfillment center in the town of Gap, Pennsylvania. In other words, the true minimum wage is $0 per hour.
In an email, the company asked for weekend workers to “pick, pack and prepare packages for shipment.” The three brands beneath the Urban umbrella are Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and Free People.

Volunteers would work six-hour shifts in exchange for lunch and transportation, if required. The email advises participants to wear “sneakers and comfortable clothing” to prepare for this “team building activity.”

The picking, packing and preparing that’s required are jobs that normally pay wages. But this sort of request is a common occurrence in the industry when there’s a new fulfillment center, according to a spokesperson. The company sought help for next weekend, the one after, and Oct. 31.

Hourly-wage workers were excluded from the email, though the company said some of them responded.

“Many hourly employees also offered to pitch in — an offer which we appreciated, but declined in order to ensure full compliance with all applicable labor laws and regulations,” the company said in a statement.

Instead of Columbus Day, some celebrate this

Instead of celebrating Christopher Columbus, some cities and schools are honoring the people he encountered in the New World and their descendants.

More jurisdictions this year are recognizing the second Monday in October as Indigenous People's Day, building on efforts to shift the holiday's focus away from the Italian explorer.

From a practical standpoint, regardless of what the day is called there's no guarantee you have it off from work unless you're a federal employee. Columbus Day is one of America's most inconsistently celebrated holidays, with 23 states and Washington recognizing it as a paid holiday for state workers. In the private sector, it depends on the company.

The shift is part of broader attempts to clarify the Italian explorer's role in American history and connect indigenous culture to something other than sports teams, Halloween costumes and pop culture appropriation.

Study Shows No Correlation Between Violent Crime and Gun Laws

After every mass shooting, you can expect the gun control crowd to make the same exact argument that they’ve been trying to make for decades. They will tell you that in every country with limited access to firearms, there are fewer firearm related deaths, both by homicide and by suicide. In most cases this is probably true, with the exception of a few crime ridden hell holes that would probably have a high crime rate, regardless of how many guns are legally available.

However, this fact completely misses the point, and I’m baffled that they can make same argument over and over again with a straight face. What really matters is the overall violent crime rate. Does restricting gun ownership reduce the number of all murders, or does it just reduce gun related crimes? There is an important distinction between the two, because if you only care about stopping crimes that involve guns, then you’re basically saying that you want to outlaw guns because they’re scary. You’re not addressing the root cause of society’s problems.

So what if we took a look at how effective our gun laws have been? What if gun laws actually reduced the number of people who are murdered by any means? That would certainly support the arguments made by gun control advocates. Unfortunately for them, the numbers don’t add up in their favor.

According Eugene Volokh with the Washington Post, when you look at the numbers, there is no statistical relationship between the gun laws of any given state, and the number of murders they have on a regular basis. Volokh decided to do a comparison between the homicide rates of every US state including Washington DC, and the grades given to these jurisdictions by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. One is a number based grade with a higher number indicating that the state has tough gun laws, and the other is a typical A-F Grade.

Vandal hits bust of judge who issued Dred Scott ruling

FREDERICK, Md. — Frederick police are investigating the vandalism of a bust honoring the Supreme Court justice who wrote the 1857 Dred Scott decision affirming slavery.

Authorities say the bust of Roger Brooke Taney was found covered in a red paint-like substance Sunday morning.

Frederick Police Sgt. Paul Beliveau told WTOP that police got the call at around 8:15 a.m.

“We were notified by a citizen who was passing by city hall that one of the statues in front of city hall had been defaced. There was paint of some type that had been dumped on it,” Beliveau says.

The paint was still wet when police arrived, suggesting the vandalism occurred overnight, Beliveau tells WTOP.

With inventories up 4.2% YoY and Sales down 4.5% YoY, the stunning reality is the absolute dollar spread between inventories and sales has never been bigger.

Dozens of Legal Experts Urge Resistance to Marriage Ruling

Decision authorizing 'gay weddings' 'must be judged anti-constitutional and illegitimate'

Dozens of top legal scholars from the likes of Washington & Lee, Boston College, Kansas State, Notre Dame, University of Texas, Villanova, Vanderbilt, Hillsdale, University of Nebraska, Catholic University and Regent University have issued a statement encouraging all state and federal officials to treat the Supreme Court’s recent creation of “same-sex marriage” as “anti-constitutional and illegitimate.”

“It cannot … be taken to have settled the law of the United States,” said the statement by the American Principles Project.

“We call on all federal and state officeholders: To refuse to accept Obergefell as binding precedent for all but the specific plaintiffs in that case. To recognize the authority of states to define marriage, and the right of federal and state officeholders to act in accordance with those definitions. To pledge full and mutual legal and political assistance to anyone who refuses to follow Obergefell for constitutionally protected reasons. To open forthwith a broad and honest conversation on the means by which Americans may constitutionally resist and overturn the judicial usurpations evidence in Obergefell.”

Robert George, founder of the project and the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence at Princeton, said: “We stand with James Madison and Abraham Lincoln in recognizing that the Constitution is not whatever a majority of Supreme Court justices say it is. We remind all officeholders in the United States that they are pledged to uphold the Constitution of the United States, not the will of five members of the Supreme Court.”

ACLU Unleashes Another Blast At Kim Davis

'Plaintiffs looking to stir up controversy, perhaps to drive-up their own attorneys' fees'

A legal team defending Rowan County, Kentucky, Clerk Kim Davis’ refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples in violation of her faith is countering another offensive against her by the ACLU.

The ACLU now wants to make the case a class-action suit, a move that would be appropriate in cases in which the plaintiffs’ needs were met, but the needs of others, similarly situated but not party to the case, had not be met.

But that’s not the situation in the Davis case, according to a new court filing by Liberty Counsel, which has been working with the clerk.

“From the outset of this case, Davis has consistently argued that there were multiple alternatives by which her sincerely held religious beliefs could be accommodated, without being burdened, while simultaneously allowing individuals to obtain valid marriage licenses in Rowan County. One of those proposed solutions is now in place, with the approval and authorization of the Kentucky governor, and this current status quo also embodies the reasonable steps and good faith efforts taken by Davis to comply with this court’s orders without violating her conscience,” Liberty Counsel said.

“But, unsatisfied with the status quo, plaintiffs are apparently looking to stir up controversy where it does not exist, perhaps to drive-up their own attorneys’ fees in this litigation,” Liberty Counsel wrote.

Newly-uncovered Letters From Kim Davis Could Change The Entire Story

Anticipating a Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis wrote Kentucky state lawmakers early in 2015 requesting they exempt country clerks who had religious objections from being required to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Davis sent the letters about two weeks after she took office in January VICE News reports. In the letter (which VICE obtained through an open records request), she noted that county clerks could be exempted from issuing hunting and fishing licences under Kentucky law, and she asked that legislators allow her to “have the option, as a person who has deep moral convictions to choose not to discriminate any party, by applying for an exemption for the issuance of a marriage license.”

“I can not ask my deputies to issue or be a party to ‘the implementation of a contentious societal philosophy change’ (per Florida clerk with same views) if I myself would not,” the 49-year-old explained. “I know the deadline is close for presentation of bills on the floor, but in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to look at this in April, I feel it imparitive [sic] that we be ready to stand with our uncompromising convictions, holding strong to our morals.”

“As a constitutional officer elected by the people I personally feel the Commonwealth’s Constitution should be upheld… "

The Pain of Transgender Regret

At the age of 42, Walt Heyer was married and had two children. But he had felt for years that he was stuck in the wrong gender. So he fully transitioned and emerged as Laura Jensen. After living as a woman for eight years, he realised that he had made a terrible mistake. Now he has de-transitioned back to his birth gender and provides encouragement to people who regret their gender change.

MercatorNet: Bruce – now Caitlin – Jenner seems perfectly happy with his gender change. Doesn’t his experience prove that a gender change is possible?

Walt Heyer: I was also "perfectly happy" with my gender change for about eight years. No one knows if Jenner will remain happy. It has been only a few months and he has had great financial benefit. When the cameras are no longer rolling and reality sets in, things could change very quickly for Jenner.

MercatorNet: You have been very harshly criticised for your “transphobia” in the media. Does that trouble you?

Walt Heyer: Name calling is hardly a good argument. When people call me names it says much more about them than it does me. The goal of the activists is to silence anyone who disagrees with their agenda.

MercatorNet: Why don’t we hear much about people who have “de-transitioned”, like yourself?

Walt Heyer: There is an important reason. They are so ashamed and devastated about their mistake that they do not want to come forward.

How 'ObamaTrade' Will Drive Up The Cost Of Medicine Worldwide

After nearly eight years of negotiations, the United States and 11 other countries have finally reached consensus on the Trans-Pacific Partnership, one of the largest trade deals in a generation that'll involve nearly half the world's GDP.
The sprawling deal would affect a variety of issues, including tariffs, labor rights, and international investment. But the deal's most controversial provisions are the ones limiting competition in the pharmaceutical industry. According to Doctors Without Borders, "The TPP will still go down in history as the worst trade agreement for access to medicines in developing countries."
Though the final text of the agreement won't be available for at least another month, here's what we know so far.

The TPP will drive up costs for some of the most expensive drugs on the market in the poorest countries

One of the biggest sticking points in the negotiations had to do with data protection for biologic drugs.

Insurance Dropouts Present a Challenge for Health Law

YAZOO CITY, Miss. — Stephanie Douglas signed up for health insurance in January with the best intentions. She had suffered a stroke and needed help paying for her medicines and care. The plan she chose from the federal insurance exchange sounded affordable — $58.17 a month after the subsidy she received under the Affordable Care Act.

But Ms. Douglas, 50, who was working about 30 hours a week as a dollar store cashier and a services coordinator at an apartment complex for older adults, soon realized that her insurance did not fit in her tight monthly budget. She stopped paying her premiums in April and lost her coverage a few months later.

“When you owe on your house, on your truck, when you’re a single parent of a college student and you have other bills,” she said, “it just doesn’t work.”

Ben Carson Calls Out The Press

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson admonished the Washington press corps Friday, calling the news media “embarrassing” and “insincere” and vowing to “expose” the institutional bias he says runs rampant.

Speaking at a gathering of reporters and communications professionals at the National Press Club in Washington, Carson lashed out at the press, citing several instances where he believes his views have been misrepresented.

“Many in the press will say I’m sensitive and that I should not be thinking about running for office, because I get offended by what they do,” he said. “But the reason I expose the press is because I want the people of America to understand what they’re doing. It’s not because I’m sensitive.”

The retired neurosurgeon said he has no intention of calling a truce with the news media.

“I will continue to expose them every time they do something, so that as more people understand what they are and what they’re doing, it will negate their effect,” he said. “Until they have the kind of transformation that’s necessary for them to become allies of the people, we have to know what they’re doing.”

EPA Spends Millions On Military-style Weapons

The Environmental Protection Agency has spent millions of dollars over the last decade on military-style weapons to arm its 200 “special agents” to fight environmental crime.

Among the weapons purchased are guns, body armor, camouflage equipment, unmanned aircraft, amphibious assault ships, radar and night-vision gear and other military-style weaponry and surveillance activities, according to a new report by the watchdog group Open the Books.

“Protecting the environment just got real. With millions of dollars spent on military style weaponry, the EPA is now literally ensconced with all institutional force,” said Adam Andrzejewski, founder of Open the Books and the author of the report.

“Our report discovered that when the EPA comes knocking they are armed with a thousand lawyers, arrest/criminal data, credit, business and property histories, plus a ‘Special Agent’ with the latest in weaponry and technology,” Mr. Andrzejewski added.

The agency spends nearly $75 million each year for criminal enforcement, including money for a small militia of 200 “special agents” charged with fighting environmental crime.

Congress granted police powers to the EPA in 1988, during the Reagan administration.

The number of Cubans arriving over the age of 60 grew fivefold since 2010, according to state refugee data. At least 185 made the crossing in their 80s or 90s.

Unlike most other immigrants, Cubans qualify immediately for food stamps and Medicaid. If they are over 65 with little or no income, they also can collect a monthly check of up to $733 in Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Cubans’ special status has enabled an increasing number of elderly to retire to the U.S. with taxpayer support. The number of Cubans immigrating after age 60 and eligible for refugee assistance in Florida has increased fivefold since 2010.

“They’re getting cheap apartments, food stamps,” said Cuban-born attorney Pedro Fuentes-Cid of Tampa. “They tell their friends in Cuba, and they come over.”

The United States makes it possible under a humanitarian policy of treating Cubans who arrive as refugees. Elderly immigrants interviewed by the Sun Sentinel said they came primarily to be with family, met the aid qualifications and are grateful for the help.

AG Frosh: Maryland Helps States and Federal Government Recoup $9.25 Million in Prescription Drug Medicaid Fraud Scheme PharMerica Corp

AG Frosh: Maryland Helps States and Federal Government Recoup $9.25 Million in Prescription Drug Medicaid Fraud Scheme PharMerica Corp. Pays To Settle Kickback Charges

Baltimore, MD -Attorney General Brian E. Frosh announced today that Maryland has joined with other states and the federal government to settle kickback allegations against the nation's second-largest institutional pharmacy, PharMerica Corp.

The allegations stem from a scheme involving drug manufacturer Abbott Laboratories and its anti-seizure drug, Depakote. The states and federal government claim that PharMerica solicited and received illegal compensation from Abbott, in exchange for promoting or purchasing Depakote, frequently for "off-label" uses and in improper dosages. The payments were in violation of the federal Anti-Kickback Statute, and, as a result, the states contend that PharMerica knowingly caused false claims to be submitted to federal and state Medicaid programs.

"This case started because whistle-blowers did the right thing and shined a light on a disturbing scheme that exploited vulnerable patients," said Attorney General Frosh. "Putting profits ahead of patient needs is unacceptable."

Ben Carson Insists Holocaust Comments 'Not Hyperbole at All'

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is sticking to his guns.

Appearing on CBS's Face the Nation Sunday, Carson defended his assertion that if more people had been armed leading up to and during World War II, Adolf Hitler may not have been able to carry out the mass murder of Jews in Europe on such a large scale.

"It's not hyperbole at all," Carson said, appearing Sunday on CBS's Face The Nation. "Whether it’s on our doorstep or whether it’s 50 years away, it's still a concern and it’s something that we must guard against. That’s one of the real purposes of having a constitution. I think the founders were really quite insightful into looking at possibilities and understanding what has happened in other places and trying to put together something that would prevent that from happening here."

Carson on Thursday told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the Holocaust may not have been as deadly if more Jews had had guns.

"I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed," he said. "I'm telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take the guns first."

Top LE Official: Terrorists Have Infiltrated U.S. Through Mexico

A few days ago a top law enforcement official finally confirmed that Islamic terrorists have infiltrated the United States through Mexico, a story that Judicial Watch broke last year as part of an ongoing series involving the dangerously porous southern border.

Last October JW reported that four members of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), who entered the U.S. through the Mexican border, were arrested in McAllen and Pharr Texas. Then, over the summer, JW reported that Mexican drug cartels are smuggling foreigners from countries with terrorist links into a small Texas rural town near El Paso and they’re using remote farm roads—rather than interstates—to elude the Border Patrol and other law enforcement barriers. The information comes from sources on both sides of the Mexico-U.S. border who say the Special Interest Aliens (SIA) are being transported to stash areas in Acala, a rural crossroads located around 54 miles from El Paso on a state road – Highway 20.

Prior to that JW published a series of investigative articles citing high-level federal law enforcement, intelligence and other sources certifying that Islamic terrorist groups are operating in at least two Mexican border towns. In August, 2014 ISIS planned to attack the U.S. with car bombs or other vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIED) from a camp in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez. Agents across a number of Homeland Security, Justice and Defense agencies were all placed on alert and instructed to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning the terrorist threat.

This past spring JW sources that include a Mexican Army field grade officer and a Mexican Federal Police inspector disclosed that ISIS is actually operating a camp just a few miles from El Paso.

Ban Gun-free Zones

Would you put a sign outside your house saying, “Doors unlocked,” or “We’re not home”?

An under-reported study released a year ago by the Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC), the organization led by America’s leading gun policy expert John Lott, found that 92 percent of mass shootings since 2009 have taken place in designated gun-free zones.

Or, as CPRC puts it, “Since 2009, only 8 percent of mass public shootings have occurred where civilians are allowed to defend themselves.”

“Gun-free” zones are purported to forestall gun violence, but in practice they attract deranged gunmen like porch lights attract moths. Why? Because deranged gunmen are crazy, not stupid. An identified gun-free zone literally advertises the ideal environment for committing mass murder.

Mass shootings are committed by mentally ill people to achieve a form of immortality, or by political zealots to terrorize the public. They know the more they kill, the more publicity they’ll get. They also know the only way they will be stopped is by a good guy with a gun, so they choose to attack in places where they know nobody else will be armed.

Most mass shootings don’t end until the police arrive. Killers typically have several minutes to slaughter as many victims as they can without fear of interference.

Columbus Day: Unfortunate facts about the explorer

In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue — but he certainly wasn't the first.

Christopher Columbus is nationally celebrated on the second Monday of October for supposedly discovering America.

However, he was not the first European to discover America — most believe it was Viking Leif Eriksson.

Eriksson is said to have discovered America nearly five centuries prior to Columbus' visit, according to the History Channel.

And millions of people lived in the Americas before any Europeans arrived.

O’Malley slams Clinton on trade

Democratic presidential candidate Martin O'Malley criticized front-runner Hillary Clinton for opposing President Obama's international trade agreement "on the eve of the first Democratic debate."

O'Malley, a former Maryland governor, said on CNN's "State of the Union" that he has opposed the plan -- which is panned by liberal labor groups -- for eight months, citing concerns about worker protections.

"I didn't shift positions right on the eve of the first Democratic debate," O'Malley said on CNN, alluding to Clinton, who came out against the plan last week.

Oregon 8th-grader suspended from school for wearing patriotic shirt showing gun

Alan Holmes, an eighth-grade student in Gresham, Ore., still remembers the day his older brother returned home after serving in Iraq with the Marines.

“I was proud of him,” Holmes told ABC affiliate KATU. “I remember the day he came home and I was just so happy. I was little but I still remember it, he made me happy.”

As he got older, Holmes’s pride turned into patriotism. He wanted to demonstrate that patriotism last week by wearing a T-shirt to school that included a design memorializing fallen soldiers and bearing the words “Standing for those who stood for us,” according to KATU. Instead, the image on his shirt — boots, a helmet and a gun — got him suspended, the station reported.

Officials at Dexter McCarty Middle School asked Holmes to change his shirt, according to Fox affiliate KPTV. When he refused, the station reported, he was given an ultimatum: remove the shirt or face suspension.

Brain Trauma Widespread Among High School Football Players

Football is a dangerous sport. Even with the best protective gear, sprained knees, pulled muscles and an occasional broken bone are part of the game. But seven years of research into the impact of head trauma in high school players points to new dangers that parents will find extremely alarming.

"We are seeing changes in brain activity even without a diagnosed concussion, even without any sign or symptoms showing up and that that occurs in a large population of our subjects," said Larry Leverenz, a clinical professor of health and kinesiology at Purdue University.

More than half of the players participating in the trials showed signs of altered neurological function and dramatic changes to the wiring and biochemistry of their brains, according to a series of studies published by the Purdue Neurotrauma Group.

Is Monsanto's Excitement About GMOs Backfiring?

Pity Monsanto, the genetically modified seed and agri-chemical giant. Its share price has plunged 25 percent since the spring. Market prices for corn and soybeans are in the dumps, meaning Monsanto's main customers—farmers who specialize in those crops—have less money to spend on its pricey seeds and flagship herbicide (which recently got named a "probable carcinogen" by the World Health Organization, spurring lawsuits).

Monsanto's long, noisy attempt to buy up rival pesticide giant Syngenta crumbled into dust last month. And Wednesday, Monsanto reported quarterly revenues and profits that sharply underperformed Wall Street expectations. For good measure, it also sharply lowered its profit projections for the year ahead.

In response to these unhappy trends, the company announced it was slashing 2,600 jobs, 12 percent of its workforce, and spending $3 billion to buy back shares. Share buybacks are a form of financial (as opposed to genetic) engineering—they magically boost a company's earnings-per-share ratio (a metric closely watched by investors) simply by removing shares from the market. And buybacks divert money from things like R&D—or keeping a company's workforce whole—and into the pockets of shareholders.

In a conference call with investors (transcript), Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant put a positive spin on the company's prospects...

A Viewer Writes: Muir Boda's Ad

I was just browsing on my phone and this ad just popped up. I think this just answered my long-standing question..."Who funds a Wal-Mart worker's numerous campaigns?"

These people got Jake Day elected last time, and since he's the defacto Mayor, I think they're spending their money to control the Council to oppose Jimmy Boy's rent control
