Anthem Of The Brave This Weekend
For years, we have felt that Delmarva (Delaware, Maryland, & Virginia) has needed an opportunity to come together and support our veterans. This opportunity not only will provide a benefit to The Fisher House, a veteran’s charity, but also raise awareness for and honor our veterans. In 2017, we are presenting Anthem of the Brave which will be a choral tribute of patriotic and Christian choir music selections sung by a corporate community choir made up of several individuals from all over Delmarva. Performance dates are May 19 & 20 at 7pm and May 21 at 2:30pm.
We are very excited to have Alice Wigfield directing the community choir. Alice has not only taught voice and music professionally, but for many years, has been the choral director for the MAGI Fund Concert which benefits the homeless charities in our area. Alice’s expertise in voice and directing has transformed choir songs to passionate and professional choral presentations. [READ MORE ABOUT ALICE]
Norm Smith, who carries a vast amount of expertise in orchestra and band, is putting together our orchestra; we are very excited for all our musicians that are joining in on the Anthem Project.
Power Productions has always been a drama ministry first and foremost, so we wanted to incorporate drama into the choral production. For this, we will house a mini-play movie that will be broken up by scenes and presented throughout the night interspersed among the choir selections. Anthem is a passionate and heartfelt event for which you will definitely want to be involved.

Run to Remember Memorial Day 5K coming up May 27
SALISBURY, Md. – This Memorial Day weekend, run in honor of the men and women who served our country and didn’t make it home. The Run to Remember Memorial Day 5K is coming up Saturday, May 27, and registration is open now.
The 5K begins at 9 a.m. that day at a new location – WinterPlace Park, at 6737 Blue Ribbon Road in Salisbury. Check-in and race-day registration begin at 8 a.m., and walkers and leashed pets are also welcome.
The race benefits the Wicomico War Veterans’ Memorial at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center.
The cost is $25 in advance or $30 on race day. For military who register in person with ID, the cost is $20. The top male and female finishers in five age groups will receive awards.
The annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held two days after the 5K, at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, at the Wicomico War Veterans’ Memorial. If it rains, the ceremony will be held in the Midway Room of the Civic Center.

A Massive Invasion Could Be Underway In Maryland… Four Years Early
Preparing underground for 17 years, cicadas are born and then quickly take refuge underneath the surface. The insects will feast on tree roots until they make their way aboveground once again after a long hiatus. It was just last year when we were reporting on the massive invasion of Brood V cicadas that were emerging all over Maryland. The short-lived spectacle is one we don’t frequently see throughout our lifetime, with the next mass of them to appear in 2021. But in the past week an undetermined group of cicadas has emerged, leaving scientists puzzled over their early arrival.
With handfuls of holes being reported in soil over the past week, it would appear that a group of cicadas due to emerge in 2021 have made an early appearance.

‘DREAMER’ WHO KILLED TWO LITTLE GIRLS WILL NOT BE DEPORTED
HILLSBORO, OR (The Oregonian) – The Oregon Court of Appeals has reversed the conviction of a young woman who killed two girls in 2013 when she ran over them while they were playing in a leaf pile in Forest Grove.
There was insufficient evidence to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Cinthya Garcia-Cisneros knew or had reason to know she injured stepsisters Anna Dieter-Eckerdt, 6, and Abigail Robinson, 11, according to the ruling Wednesday.
Authorities said the girls were likely lying in a large mound of leaves on the street in October 2013 and not visible to Garcia-Cisneros when her SUV passed through about a block away from her home.
The Appeals Court said Oregon law doesn’t require a driver to return to the scene of an accident after leaving and later learning that someone else was injured or killed.

Weekly Fishing Report
Let the sun shine and warm the landscape and waters of Maryland this week. After several days of rain, cold temperatures and a root’n toot’n northeaster, I think we’re all ready for some dryer and warmer weather. The rain does bring out the green in everything, and this is a marvelous time of the year to be outdoors. A whole new opportunity has opened up for those who fish for striped bass in the Chesapeake as the minimum size has dropped down to 20 inches. The water clarity in the middle and lower bay is amazing right now, so get out there and enjoy the outdoors; they’re out there waiting for you.
Before we jump in, here is a quick reminder that Maryland will once again be having free fishing days in June and July, providing a unique opportunity to fish the state’s waters without obtaining a fishing license, stamp or registration.
The floodgates at the Conowingo Dam closed this past Sunday for the first time in more than a week, which is good news for fishermen and the bay. The waters of the lower Susquehanna and the very upper portions of the bay will have stained water for a while, as well as floating debris, but will clear up in time. Presently the lower Susquehanna River is loaded with white perch. Now that the river has calmed down, there is excellent fishing to be found. There are still a few hickory shad being caught and released at the mouth of Deer Creek, but there is a lot of white perch eager to take shad darts. Lower flows in the river will also mean better fishing for flathead and channel catfish, and there could very well still be some American shad near the dam pool.

Police Investigating Crimes Involving ‘Reckless, Out Of Control’ Juveniles
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Baltimore Police Department reports they are investigating two incidents they believe are linked, in which the suspects range in age from 12 to 18.
After announcing their investigation into these cases, police said they were able to take four suspects into custody, but are still searching for additional suspects.
Police say these crimes occurred on Sunday, May 14, and Tuesday, May 16, both on Springlake Way.
Handguns were used in both cases, according to police, and the victims in both incidents were physically unharmed.

The Latest Sad, Pathetic Trend Is 'Sologamy,' Where People Marry Themselves
There have been some pretty weird trends. From saggy britches to pet rocks, people have embraced some bizarre ideas of what is cool. The fashions of the '70s and '80s give testament to that all on their own.
However, now there's something happening that is described as a growing trend that tops them all. It seems that an increasing number of people are marrying themselves.
“I would describe it as women saying yes to themselves,” [Erika] Anderson said. “It means that we are enough, even if we are not partnered with someone else."
In many ways, the 37-year-old bride looked like any other on her wedding day. She wore a white dress and had a bouquet. Anderson looked stunning with the Brooklyn bridge and New York City skyline behind her.
Except when she walked down the aisle, no one was waiting for her. That’s just the way she wanted it.
Anderson said she grew tired of people asking why she was still single. So, in front of family and friends she married herself.
Self-marriage—or sologamy—is growing. Partly because it’s popping up in pop culture, like when an episode of ‘Sex and the City’ floated the idea.
Of course, this idea will only last as long as it takes for the individual to meet someone special. Anderson admits as much, saying she's open to dating and marriage with someone else.

WASHINGTON — A Prince George’s County police officer has been convicted of assault after he hit a suspect with his police cruiser.
Dashcam video showed Officer Juan Hernandez, an 11-year veteran of the force, chasing down a suspect with his police cruiser and hitting the man in Hyattsville last June.
Though the video showed the suspect — 23-year-old Ulrich Boaoutou — being thrown onto the police cruiser’s windshield by the force of the hit, prosecutors said he did not need medical attention.

Ocean City Beach Patrol Begins Guarding on May 27
Ocean City, Maryland – : The Ocean City Beach Patrol is reminding residents and visitors that the first day of patrol begins on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Ocean City’s 10 miles of beautiful beach will be guarded from May 27, 2017 until Sunfest weekend, September 24.
Although beach patrol activities are taking place throughout town before Memorial Day Weekend, including the 2017 Surf Rescue Academy, the beach will not be guarded until surf rescue technicians take their stands on May 27. Until then, the patrol is working hard to gear up for the summer, with the first training academy beginning this Saturday, May 21, and the second academy beginning, Saturday June 18, 2017.
Starting May 27, the beach patrol will be on duty every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. At 5:25 p.m., lifeguards will begin signaling beachgoers out of the ocean. This is the OCBP’s way of letting visitors know that guards are going off duty and all water-related activities should cease until 10 a.m. the next day. “We continue our efforts to educate the public, warning them of the dangers of swimming on unguarded beaches,” said Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin. “We do whatever it takes to make sure people leave the ocean before we make that last turn to the west, leaving our beaches for the night.”
Although the temperatures are warming, the OCBP urges beach patrol urges visitors to stay out of the water during unguarded times. “Remember our saying,” Arbin continued. “Keep Your Feet in the Sand until the Lifeguard’s in the Stand.”

Steven Cohen, Professor of Russian studies at Princeton and NYU (an obvious Russian spy) was besides himself tonight, in sheer disbelief over the with hunt of gigantic nothing-burgers that are being used to assault the Presidency of Donald Trump.
He declared, "today, I would say (the greatest threat to national security) is this assault on President Trump. Let's be clear what he's being accused of is treason. This has never happened in America, that we had a Russian agent in the White House. Cohen believes Flynn did nothing wrong by talking to the Russian ambassador, describing it as 'his job' to do so.
He then illuminated the indelible fact that there is a 4th branch of government, the intelligence community, who have been meddling in American foreign affairs, obstructing the other 3 branches of government.
"In 2016, President Obama worked out a deal with Russian President Putin for military cooperation in Syria. He said he was gonna share intelligence with Russia, just like Trump and the Russians were supposed to do the other day. Our department of defense said it wouldn't share intelligence. And a few days later, they killed Syrian soldiers, violating the agreement, and that was the end of that. So, we can ask, who is making our foreign policy in Washington today?"
Professor Cohen added, "you and I have to ask a subversive question, are there really three branches of government, or is there a 4th branch of government? These intel services. Chris Cornell: Dead at 52
Chris Cornell, the unmistakable voice and frontman of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, died overnight in Detroit at the age of 52. He was discovered just past midnight at the MGM Grand Detroit, according to police.
The office of the Wayne County Medical Examiner on Thursday determined the cause of his death to be suicide by hanging, noting that a full autopsy has yet to be completed.
"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause," Brian Bumbery, Cornell's representative, says in a statement. "They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time."
Cornell played a seminal role in the origins of grunge music, founding Soundgarden in 1984 with Kim Thayil and Hiro Yamamoto. Together with other Seattle natives Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains, the band — and Cornell's voice — would go on to define a sound that cherry-picked elements of punk and metal and distorted them into a distinctive brew all their own.

2015 animal cruelty case in Md. ends with puppy siblings reunited, thriving
Editor’s note: Some details in this story might be too disturbing for some readers.
WASHINGTON — A particularly disturbing 2015 case of animal cruelty ended on a heartwarming note Wednesday.
James Edward Jones, 31, was sentenced to six months in jail for strangling two 6-week-old puppies on a street in Silver Spring, Maryland.
As for the puppies, they have since recovered and, years later, are thriving in their new forever homes.
Police dashcam video shows what witnesses saw that night in 2015, when a Montgomery County man appeared to strangle these puppies.

MAGNOLIA, AR (KARK) — Two parents appeared in court Wednesday after their infant child was found seriously injured with nearly 100 rodent bites.
Erica Shryock, 19, and Charles Elliott, 18, were arrested Sunday when the baby was taken to the hospital and was discovered to have about 75-100 bites scattered on its body.
The baby needed to have facial reconstruction surgery due to a one-inch-wide wound down to its skull from the rodent bites. One Arkansas Children’s Hospital physician’s opinion was that the baby was probably in distress for at least hours, and the parents were either incapacitated or absent to not have responded to the baby’s suffering. Police found evidence of a rodent problem as well as blood at the home where Shryock, Elliott, the baby, and another roommate lived.

Most Americans think of child marriage as a vestige of a bygone era. And yet in every state, people under 18 are allowed to marry.
Some states set minimum ages for brides and grooms — sometimes as low as 13 or 14 — and usually require the permission of a parent, judge, or both before a minor can wed. But laws in about half the states allow children of any age to marry, as long as they receive the proper permission.
That may be changing. This year legislators in 10 states have introduced bills to raise the marriage age. Proponents say updating marriage laws, which in many states are more than a century old, will help protect children from being pushed into marriages by parents and predators. Some lawmakers, disturbed by instances of pregnant girls heading to the courthouse to marry older men, argue that marriage licenses should not be given to men who have committed statutory rape.
Young brides who say they were forced down the aisle are backing the efforts, as are justices of the peace who say current law requires them to approve marriages between young girls and older men.

Pimlico likely needs 'complete rebuild' to preserve Preakness, owner says
Preserving the 147-year-old Pimlico Race Course as the home of the Preakness likely would require rebuilding the track at a cost of $300 million to $500 million, according to its owner — which has no plans to foot the bill.
Simply renovating the faded track wouldn't elevate it to the standards required for the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, said Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of the racing division of the Stronach Group, owner of Pimlico and Laurel Park.
"What we'd want to see is a complete rebuild," Ritvo said in an interview Monday.

A new federal lawsuit against Baylor University accuses football players of drugging and gang-raping young women as part of a hazing or bonding ritual — and the university of failing to investigate the pervasive sexual assault.
The players often took photographs and videos as they carried out the gang rapes, the suit alleges. It was filed by "Jane Doe," who says she was raped by four to eight Baylor players in February 2012. The suit also describes dogfighting at football parties and burglaries carried out by football players, without consequence.

Officials at the University of Missouri’s flagship campus in Columbia have announced a plan to cut approximately 400 jobs and raise tuition in the face of a projected 7.4 percent plunge in student enrollment and a $14.7 million state budget cut.
Somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 employees will simply lose their jobs at the taxpayer-funded school. The rest of the job cuts will come either because people are retiring or because the school won’t renew the contracts of non-tenured professors, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The 7.4 percent decrease in student enrollment will cause a $16.6 million drop in revenue. School officials are responding to the revenue reduction by raising tuition by 2.1 percent. The tuition increase will generate about $7 million.
Garnett Stokes, Mizzou’s latest interim chancellor, announced the staff cuts and the tuition increase on Monday at a forum on campus.

Baltimore Co. Police Say Former Priest's DNA Doesn't Match Scene Of Nun's Killing
A DNA sample from the exhumed remains of a former priest doesn't match DNA from the murder scene of a Catholic nun whose death has attracted renewed interest 47 years later.
Baltimore County police on Wednesday said they got the results from an accredited laboratory that ruled out A. Joseph Maskell as a contributor to DNA preserved from the scene where Sister Catherine Ann Cesnik was killed.
Her body was found in a Lansdowne dumping area in January 1970. She was last seen alive at her Baltimore City apartment before she left to run errands in Edmonson Village the previous November. Police believe whoever killed Cesnik accosted her as she was returning from the store and forced her back into her car. They believe she was driven to Monumental Avenue, where she was assaulted and murdered. Her car was found in the early morning hours the next day.

A former church has been taken over and converted to a mosque in a rural North Carolina county, and a group of Christian pastors took part in the conversion ceremony in an effort to “show mutual respect” for their Muslim neighbors.
Crosses have been removed from the former church’s facade and steeple, and mosque leader Ali Muhammad turned them over to the group of pastors.
“What they were attempting to do is honor our tradition and so they wanted to turn the crosses over to us,” said the Rev. Jim Melnyk, pastor of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Smithfield, a small town in Johnston County about 45 minutes south of Raleigh. “They were reaching out to us, and we were reaching out to them.”
Melnyk said he was joined by pastors from the United Methodist Church, United Church of Christ and three different Baptist congregations at Saturday’s ceremony, which marked the official conversion of a former Pentecostal church into a mosque. One lay person from the local Presbyterian Church was also present for the “celebration.”

DOUGLAS COUNTY, CO – On May 12, 2017, at approximately 6:45 p.m. near the intersection of County Line Road and Sante Fe Road a Deputy from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office saw a motor vehicle that appeared to be in need of assistance. The Deputy stopped behind the vehicle and tried to help the motorist. Sometime during the contact, the subject associated with the motor vehicle emerged from his SUV with a weapon. The Deputy gave the subject verbal commands. The Deputy feared for his life and deployed his service weapon. The subject was shot and immediately went to the ground.
Deputies arrived on scene and immediately rendered emergency aid to the subject. The subject was transported to a local area hospital where his condition remains undisclosed at this time. No other suspects are being sought at this time.

Baltimore City’s homicide rate is now ranked number one in the United States surpassing cities, such as New Orleans, St. Louis, and Detroit. The city has deteriorated so quickly this year that the Mayor of Baltimore has called on Federal Government agencies to restore order. According to WaPo, Baltimore’s homicide rate “is more than triple Washington’s rate and higher than the homicide rates in New Orleans and Chicago, two places that have become national symbols of gun violence”.

Former Fox News boss Roger Ailes dead at 77
Fox News founder Roger Ailes died Thursday morning, his wife, Elizabeth Ailes, said in a statement. "Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many," she wrote. The group also included a website, which described the group's goal as looking to "advance progressive values and work to build a brighter future for generations to come."
Sources told CNN earlier this month that the former secretary of state, months after her 2016 campaign loss, was working with former aides and donors to build an organization that will look to fund and invest in groups that have impressed her since her 2016 election loss.
