Report: Debt Collectors Work In Emergency Rooms, Demand Payment Before Patients Receive Care

One of the nation's largest medical debt collection companies — already the subject of a lawsuit over alleged privacy violations — finds itself in more hot water as newly released documents claim that agency employees are actually working in hospital emergency rooms and sometimes demanding that patients pay up before they receive any further medical attention.

FEMA Struggles To Recover Million

FEMA is still struggling to recover millions of dollars in improper payments that it spent to help victims of recent hurricanes. A watchdog group said the agency recovered about a third of the money. The Project on Government Oversight looked at records from fiscal 2005 to 2010. It sought information on FEMA payments to people found guilty of fraud related to helping victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma. The group also looked at how the agency chased after the improper payments. It accused FEMA of having no standard process in place. The agency said it was recovering millions of dollars and no longer made the same mistakes in handing out disaster relief money in the first place.

Transgender People Are Legally Protected From Bias In The Workplace

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled sex discrimination laws cover people who have switched sexes. The case involved a man who applied for a job at a contractor to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Mia Macy, now a woman, claimed a job offer was withheld when the agency learned of her impending sex change. She is an Army veteran and former policeman. The Transgender Law Center took up her case.

GSA In The Spotlight

The General Services Administration's spending is putting federal employees in the spotlight, and a conservative group is capitalizing on it with a campaign commercial. The American Future Fund's spot features suspended GSA official Jeff Neely in a Las Vegas hot tub, as a narrator lists the extravagant spending for which he appears to be responsible. The commercial suggests that President Barack Obama is not taking charge. It quotes him as describing the government as "pretty big." The Washington Post reported that Obama made those remarks last year in an unrelated interview.

Representative Wants Payments Stopped To GSA

Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.), chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is urging the General Services Administration to stop paying Jeff Neely, the official at the center of the conference spending scandal. The Public Buildings Services commissioner in Region 9 for GSA was put on administrative leave earlier this month after an inspector general report revealed a 2010 conference in Las Vegas with a $820,000 price tag. In a letter to acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini, Mica called for Neely's immediate firing or, at the very least, removal from the federal payroll. Mica said: "Continuing to pay an official who has abused and demonstrated a wanton disregard for his responsibilities as a federal employee and senior executive is unacceptable."

Senate Scales Mountain Of Postal Amendments, More Votes Today

In a series of votes Tuesday, the Senate considered more than a dozen amendments to a postal reform bill, approving a provision to limit all federal agencies' spending on conferences, but voting down an amendment expanding the federal workers' compensation program. Lawmakers also rejected an amendment that would have required retirement-eligible USPS employees to retire without a buyout payment.

Salisbury Police Department Press Releases On The Zoo

On April 21, 2012 at approximately 11:00am, officers of the Salisbury Police Department responded to the Cedar Crossing Housing area for a reported large and disorderly crowd. On arrival, the officers observed approximately 1500 college age subjects within the confines of the housing area. The officers videotaped portions of the crowd for documentation. The crowd began to throw bottles and cans at the marked patrol vehicle.

The officers also noted that there was a “DJ” operating on a stage that had been erected. The supervisor on scene requested additional assistance respond to the scene.

Troopers from the Maryland State Police, deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, and officers from the Fruitland Police Department responded. Off-duty officers from the Salisbury Police Department were also contacted and requested to report for duty. Additionally, “Safe Ride” was contacted and several transport vans responded to take any students away from the area that wanted to leave. Salisbury EMS was also requested in case any injuries were to occur.

The consolidated group of officers began an attempt to disperse the crowd by moving towards them requesting that they leave the area. As they did so, the crowd began to curse and throw bottles and cans towards the officers. Officers advised the subjects to leave the area or pepper spray would be utilized.

A deputy was struck in the arm with what appeared to be a full can of beer. Officers then dispersed pepper spray in an attempt to move the riotous crowd from the area.

Several threats were also made towards the sergeant on scene. The crowd continued
their rant towards the uniformed officers, refused to move out of the area as requested and the officers were again pelted with bottles and cans.
The crowd did eventually move out of the area, however; officers from the agencies on scene continued to patrol the entire complex throughout the day and evening.

The following subjects were arrested and charged for various offenses that occurred throughout the day which included a large party in the 1000 block of Smith St.

Joshua Troy Sanoske, 22yo of Salisbury, MD was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Fail to Obey a Lawful Order, and Disturb the Peace. Posted $15,000.00 bond.

Benjamin Price McGuirk, 19yo of Bel Air, MD was charged with Trespassing. Posted $15,000.00 bond.

Justin Arora, 21yo of Germantown, MD was charged with Trespass and Fail to Obey a Lawful Order. Posted $15,000.00 bond.

Ashton Jacqueline Wheatley, 19yo of Fruitland, MD was charged with Disturbance of the Peace, Fail to Obey a Lawful Order, Disorderly Conduct, and Obstruction & Hindering. Posted $15,000.00 bond.

All subjects were released to the custody of Central Booking and held until posting bond.

'Coed Showers' Plan Could Hit Even Churches

Homosexual activists are demanding cities all across Kansas add sexual orientation and “gender identity” to their protected classes, a move attorneys warn could hit even churches and other faith-based groups.

The “coed shower” plans have been around for several years, with the infamous battle in Montgomery County, Md., several years ago where officials adopted the special provisions for those who choose an alternative sexual lifestyle, then manipulated election rules so that voters were not allowed to express their opinion on the law at the ballot box.

Word on the latest effort comes from Liberty Counsel Action, which says Kansas is the “latest battleground” over “granting special rights to homosexuals and cross-dressers.”

Life Insurers Ordered To Pay $260 Million In Death Benefits

Traumatizing Tykes At The TSA

Behold the State’s newest trophy in its War on Libert-sorry, Terror: four-year-old Isabella Brademeyer, on her way home to Montana from her uncle’s wedding. In their efforts to protect us from this child, the TSA’s valiant bullies screamed at and then chased her while separating her from her mother, whom they threatened. Yo, all you benighted, shriveled souls worshipping government in general and its tantrum over "terror" in particular: why doesn’t beating up on girls, large and small, immediately invalidate your idol?

According to Isabella’s mother, she, her children, and their grandmother were flying out of Wichita, Kansas when the TSA’s perverts ordered Grandma to step aside and await their sexual assault. Isabella, who had already endured the checkpoint’s charade, dispensed a child’s comfort to her grandmother: "she excitedly ran over to give her a hug, as children often do," her mother reports. "They made very brief contact, no longer than a few seconds."

You can imagine the conniptions those "few seconds" induced among brutes who strip-search octogenarians, insist that passengers wearing flip-flops shed them lest said footgear hide explosives, and pretend that cupcakes sabotage planes rather than diets. Yep: "a TSO [sic for ‘sociopath’] began yelling at my child, and demanded she too must sit down and await a full body pat-down." Equally unconscionable, Ms. Brademeyer "was prevented from coming any closer, explaining the situation to [Isabella], or consoling her in any way."

No rational person would ever fantasize that Grandma was a sleeper-agent for Al Qaeda nor suspect her of passing a bomb to her granddaughter during their "few seconds’" hug. So we’ll assume Ms. Brademeyer describes Isabella’s outfit for the TSA’s two remaining apologists out there among the sheeple: "My daughter, who was dressed in tight leggings, a short sleeve shirt and mary jane shoes, had no pockets, no jacket and nothing in her hands." That didn’t stymie the TSA’s thugs: they abused her as though she were Obama-um, Osama himself (why do I always confuse those two?). Ms. Brademeyer tells us that Isabella "was obviously terrified" and "had no idea what was going on, and the TSOs involved still made no attempt to explain it to her. When they spoke to her, it was devoid of any sort of compassion, kindness or respect. They told her she had to come to them, alone, and spread her arms and legs. She screamed, ‘No! I don't want to!’ then did what any frightened young child might, she ran the opposite direction."

And her tormenters did what any predator might: they "followed" her.

Law Enforcement Investigates Report of Squalid Conditions at Octomom House

TMZ has obtained pictures of Octomom Nadya Suleman's home that have triggered a police and child services investigation into allegations that her 14 kids are living in horrendous conditions and are being grossly neglected.

Suleman's hairstylist, Stephanie, went to La Habra, Calif. cops Tuesday afternoon and filed a formal complaint.

PHOTOS: The photos that triggered the investigation.

A La Habra cop and three reps from the Orange County Department of Children and Family Services went to Suleman's house Tuesday night to investigate.
One photo shows two children going to the bathroom in portable training toilets in the backyard.  The plumbing in the house is shot, and only one toilet is operational, TMZ reports.

One Old Lady's Moxie - And A Lesson For All Of Us

When a belligerent Baltimore, MD cop forced his way into the home of 90-year-old Venus Green – sans search warrant, sans legitimate probable cause – and proceeded to ransack the old lady’s home, as well as the old lady herself, the old lady took action. As the thug scrum made its way into her basement, Green bolted the door – locking the thug in her basement, much to his porcine discontent. She later secured a $95,000 settlement from the city of Baltimore. (See here for news coverage of this story.)

As they say Down Under, good on her!

And lucky, too. In similar situations, the victim of the thug scrum is also often the victim of much worse than merely being shoved aside, pushed to the floor and handcuffed – as happened to Mrs. Green. Had she been able to physically defend herself, she very likely would have been Tazered – or shot dead – for “resisting.” Irrespective of the fundamental lawlessness of the thug scrum itself. The situation in this country has deteriorated to the point that anything other than becoming immediately supine and limp can be construed as “resisting” – with lethal consequences for the “resister.” Even when the “resistor” has committed no crime; even when the “resistor” is in his or her own home and thug scrum cops have forced their way in on no or extremely shabby pretext, as happened in the case of Mrs. Green.

Her son Tallie had been shot – someplace else – but because he lived in Mrs. Green’s basement, the cops decided that gave them sufficient authoritay to break into her home, physically assault the 90-year-old woman and ransack her dwelling. ”I am a law-abiding citizen. I’ve never been arrested, I paid my taxes, owned my home, my husband died 34 years ago. I raised my son and I have been brutally abused. I feel like the police department needs to go back to school,” Mrs. Green told local TV affiliate WBAL.

Iran Preparing For 'The Last Six Months'

Source says leaders expect attack that will usher in 'messiah'

Despite the recent declaration by Iran that it does not want a nuclear bomb and statements by regime officials that they are willing to negotiate over the nuclear issue, indications from within Iran signal massive preparation for an all-out war as part of its destiny.

Nine years ago a Revolutionary Guards arm, the Holy Defense, published a book, “The Last Six Months,” in which it describes the conditions needed in the last six months prior to the reappearance of the last Islamic messiah. The book was distributed in the hundreds of thousands to all Guards, Basij and army bases throughout the country.

The Blonde

After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, 'Well, then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!'

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, 'Well, little lady, why don't you go give it a try?'

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator.

Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank.

Nearby were 7 more dead Gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator.

Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration......

Sonofabitch!! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO!

USDA Confirms New Case of Mad Cow Disease in California

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed the country’s fourth case of mad cow disease in a dairy cow in California on Tuesday.

According to a statement released by USDA Chief Veterinary Officer John Clifford, the cow had not entered the food supply and poses no risk to human health. Clifford said the animal’s carcass is being held at a rendering facility and will be destroyed.

It has not been revealed where the cow originated, but a senior manager with a California rendering company says they discovered the cow had the disease while it was at his Hanford, California, transfer station.

Dennis Luckey, executive vice president of Baker Commodities in Los Angeles, told The Associated Press the disease was discovered after workers selected the cow for random sampling.

How to Report and Stop Text Message Spam

Many cell phone users say they've been receiving text messages that appear to offer gift cards and cash prizes lately. The messages claim to be from big companies like Apple, Walmart or your phone company, but don't be fooled by your phone.

Rick Farmer said he was doing some yard work at his home in Parma, Ohio, when he got a text message notifying him that he won an iPad 3. The message said he had one hour to call in and claim his prize. Farmer was skeptical.

"I can barely make my phone work. I have no use for one of those," said Farmer

Holy Land Pictures

Today's time traveling expedition courtesy of the Library of Congress takes us to the Holy Land between 1890 and 1900.

The Holy Land of that era, which includes modern Israel, Lebanon and other territories, was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. It is a pastoral land that looks like it had changed little since the Biblical era.

These images are photolithographs, which are made from adding color to black-and-white photographic negatives.

Boycott Best Buy?

On April 19, Marc J. Fink at Islamist Watch broke the story that Best Buy was a “Platinum Sponsor” for a fundraising banquet for the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). After Best Buy defended its donation, the Clarion Fund’s RadicalIslam.org started a petition on April 24 for those committing to a boycott of the company until it rescinds its support for CAIR. Within one day, nearly 5,000 people had signed it. You can sign it by clicking here.

On January 23, the Facebook page of CAIR-MN announced that Best Buy would be a “Platinum Sponsor” of its fifth annual banquet. CAIR was labeled by the federal government as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation, a charity that was shut down for fundraising for the terrorist group Hamas, whose charter calls for the extermination of Jews.

CAIR grew out of the Islamic Association of Palestine, another group that was shut down for being a Hamas front. The Muslim Brotherhood’s secret Palestine Committee in the U.S., set up to support Hamas, listed CAIR as a “working organizations” in one of its documents in 1994.

ALL DATA POINTING TO RECESSION

So much for a moderate decline in the economy. As we warned back in February when we noted that the non-seasonally unadjusted collapse in durable goods was historic, now that the aftereffect of a record warm winter is fully gone, the March durable goods data comes in and it was a complete disaster: instead of dropping modestly by 1.7% as the consensus expected, the March actual print was a massive 4.2% decline, worse than the worst Wall Street forecast, or the most since January 2009! And it was not only airplanes as many were expecting (despite Boeing’s just announced epic sales): the ex-transportation number was down 1.1%, on expectations of a 0.5% gain; even worse, capital goods new orders slid 0.8% on expectations of a 1% gain. And as usual inventories hit another record high. Overall, a horrendous print which confirms that the entire myth of a recovery in Q1 was warm weather driven, and that about 1% of the 2.5% or so consensus GDP was due to the weather. Expect the downward GDP revisions to come any second. But don’t expect the market to react to this news at all: after all if anything, this simply makes NEW QE/LTRO more likely and is to be cheered by all habitual gamblers.

Iran's Drone Announcement Pure Mockery of Obama

When a U.S. drone went down in eastern Iran last December, President Obama asked the Iranians if they might return it--pretty please--but they just grinned and said “no.”

Now, some five months later, they claim not only to have “recovered data” from the spy drone but are actually building a working copy of it. To bolster their claims, they’ve provided intelligence they say they gathered from the drone’s on-board computer, and the chief of the aerospace division of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has mockingly reported: “There is almost no part hidden to us in this aircraft.” Moreover, he claims they’ve even been able to recover “part of the data that had been erased.”

CISPA Is The New SOPA

Earlier this year, strong public opposition led by several prominent websites forced congressional leaders to cancel votes on two bills known in Washington as "SOPA" and "PIPA." Both of these bills threatened search engines and websites with possible shutdowns if the Justice Department deemed them insufficiently cooperative with our phony "war on terror," or if they were merely accused of copyright infringement. Fortunately, the American public flooded Capitol Hill with phone calls and congressional leaders dropped both bills.

But we should never underestimate the federal government's insatiable desire to control the Internet. Statists of all parties, persuasions and nationalities hate the free, unbridled flow of information, ideas and goods via the Internet. They resent the notion that ordinary people can communicate and trade across the world without government filters or approvals. So they continually seek to impose controls, always under the guise of fighting terrorism or protecting "intellectual property" rights.

The latest assault on Internet freedom is called the "Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act," or "CISPA," which may be considered by Congress this week. CISPA is essentially an Internet monitoring bill that permits both the federal government and private companies to view your private online communications with no judicial oversight − provided, of course, that they do so in the name of "cybersecurity." The bill is very broadly written, and allows the Department of Homeland Security to obtain large swaths of personal information contained in your emails or other online communication. It also allows emails and private information found online to be used for purposes far beyond any reasonable definition of fighting cyberterrorism.

CISPA represents an alarming form of corporatism, as it further intertwines government with companies like Google and Facebook. It permits them to hand over your private communications to government officials without a warrant, circumventing well-established federal laws like the Wiretap Act and the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. It also grants them broad immunity from lawsuits for doing so, leaving you without recourse for invasions of privacy. Simply put, CISPA encourages some of our most successful Internet companies to act as government spies, sowing distrust of social media and chilling communication in one segment of the world economy where America still leads.

GBTV‘s ’Rumors Of War III’ Examines Strategic Islamist Penetration Of U.S. At The Highest Level

To learn more about tonight’s broadcast, “Rumors of War III: Target U.S.” click here.

Do Islamic extremist groups still pose a mortal threat to the United States?

Based on recent events, it would seem many senior US officials believe the answer is no. Just this week, the Obama administration claimed that the War on Terror, a catch-all term for the series of post-9/11 conflicts between civilization and violent radical Islam, has come to an end.

But a new GBTV Documentary, “Rumors of War III: Target U.S.” shatters this claim. It makes the case that not only has the threat from radical Islam endured– it is in fact growing and more imminent with each passing day.

Hawley's book, "Permanent Emergency: Inside the TSA and the Fight for the Future of American Security," which he co-wrote with Nathan Means, was released Tuesday.

What Happens When All The Money Vanishes Into Thin Air?

Issuing debt and printing money do not create wealth. All they can create is a temporary illusion of wealth.

I could have written "if all the money vanishes," but that would be misleading, for all unbacked money will most certainly vanish into thin air. The only question is when, not if. Frequent contributor Harun I. explains why:

Those who fail to understand that the Status Quo is impossible to maintain will be shocked when the disintegration is undeniable. But the whole thing was perverse to begin with. Words like capitalism and meritocracy are thrown around to make people feel good when, in reality, we have never owned anything, not even ourselves.

How can we own ourselves when the very thing we use for subsistence can be cheapened or reduced to nearly nothing, not by market forces, but by central banks acting at the behest of governments? When a person does not control his labor, what is he?

I have been studying the monetary history of the world for the past few weeks. I can tell you that the second oldest profession is currency debasement. Nothing is new.

Of course, this should be no surprise, everything is cyclical. Humankind is like the trader looking for the Holy Grail. There is no perfect monetary system, there is only better and worse. And this one ranks among the worst.

I wait patiently for people to come to the understanding that the only way for everyone to get their money would be to destroy its value completely, meaning that a loaf of bread would be a million dollars. If a small fraction of what has to be printed to keep the system afloat has caused the price spikes in energy and everything else, imagine what happens as the disintegration picks up speed.

As the exponential debt curve moves closer to the pure vertical, the rate at which debts come due will approach infinity. Of course, while this is the ultimate mathematical outcome, the reality is that the system will collapse before this point is reached. But don't think governments will throw in the towel. If history holds true the rise of a totalitarian government is just over the horizon.

Then there are those who get it right and wrong in the same breath. John Mauldin, in a KWN interview, thanked Europe for keeping the heat off the US. Mr. Mauldin apparently does not understand that our monetary policies are transferring what we do not want to the rest of the world, at least for a time, but not much more.

How many more food items be made smaller and sold at the same price? In effect this is a slow starvation of those at the margin. The 46 million American souls on food stamps will soon find their food stamps to be worthless.

Those who assert that a credit system cannot go hyper-inflationary may not have thought through the exponential effects on the relationship of the debt and productivity curves within the context of all money is debt and the only way to create money is for debt to be created. Eventually the debt curve accelerates away from the productivity curve, then the productivity curve collapses all together. Sovereign debt crises caused by governments stepping in to keep the debt system going is the last stage. Then comes the debt/currency collapse.

Even if the Fed stopped printing money, I fail to see the difference between too much money that is worth nothing, and no money at all. It's not going to matter to a starving man that a loaf of bread is $1 million and he is a dollar short, or if it's $1 and he is a dollar short.

Who Is 'Racist'?

Whatever the ultimate outcome of the case against George Zimmerman for his shooting of Trayvon Martin, what has happened already is enough to turn the stomach of anyone who believes in either truth or justice.

An amazing proportion of the media has given us a painful demonstration of the thinking – and lack of thinking – that prevailed back in the days of the old Jim Crow South, where complexion counted more than facts in determining how people were treated.

One of the first things presented in the media was a transcript of a conversation between George Zimmerman and a police dispatcher. The last line in most of the transcripts shown on TV was that of the police dispatcher telling Zimmerman not to continue following Trayvon Martin.

That became the basis of many media criticisms of Zimmerman for continuing to follow him. Only later did I see a transcript of that conversation on the Sean Hannity program that included Zimmerman's reply to the police dispatcher: "O.K."

OCPD PARTICIPATING IN OPERATION MEDICINE DROP

The Ocean City Police Department, in partnership with the Assateague Coastal Trust, Berlin Police Department, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and Worcester County Health Department will be participating in “Operation Medicine Drop,” a one day medication take-back effort to be held on Saturday, April 28, 2012.

“Operation Medicine Drop is a bi-annual Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) federal program in conjunction with state and local law enforcement to encourage citizens to properly dispose of their prescription drugs,” commented Chief Bernadette DiPino. “The objective is to get unwanted, unused and expired prescription medication out of people’s cabinets and off of the streets.”

The Maryland Executive Board Members of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) has hailed this effort as a success in keeping unwanted and unused prescription drugs out of the hands of persons who shouldn’t have them as well as out of Maryland coastal bays and waterways. Citizens are urged to not flush their medication or throw them away. Disposing of medication properly prevents the medication from entering waterways and landfills.

There will be six drop off locations in WorcesterCounty: Ocean City Public Safety Building, 6501 Coastal Hwy,OceanCity, Food Lion, Rt. 611,WestOceanCity, Berlin Police Department, 10 Williams St., Food Lion, Manklin Creek Rd, Ocean Pines, Worcester County Health Dept., Public Landing Rd., Snow Hill, Pocomoke Health Center, 400-A Walnut St.

Tennessee Football Coach fired for making Obama song He'll make more money when this song becomes a big hit than he would teaching school.

Tennessee middle school assistant football coach, age 26, fired for a song he wrote and played!

This could be the next number one hit country song. It's the best effort yet at encapsulating the outrage at the oversteps of this government in an entertaining song.

Apparently, the guy was fired over the song because some parents complained.

Something Rotten In The State

With the number of Secret Service members and agents caught up in the partying-with-prostitutes scandal in Cartagena now at a dozen, and six already gone, how much wider and deeper does this go?

No one can take pleasure in seeing Secret Service agents – whose deserved reputation is that they will "take a bullet" for the president, his family and all whom they protect – shamed and disgraced.

Yet one would have to be naive to believe this was some isolated incident. No sooner was the first day's work done in Cartagena than 20 hookers were trooping into the hotel rooms of SS agents, supervisors and members of the military advance team.

And Sen. Charles Grassley asks a relevant question.

As the Secret Service travel and work in close contact with the White House Advance Office and White House Communications Agency, was the Obama staff oblivious to this misconduct? If they were aware of it, did no one report it to the White House chief of staff?

Army Private That Leaked Information May Go Free Today

The Army private accused of the biggest leak of government secrets in U.S. history may go free later today. A military judge will rule on a motion to dismiss the case against Bradley Manning. Defense lawyers requested it on the grounds that prosecutors had been too slow in sharing information. But prosecutors said it took a while to obtain documents from civilian agencies and go through them. They are accusing Manning of sending hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks. He faces 22 separate charges.

Public "Walk-Over" Event Will Allow Up Close Look Of New Indian River Inlet River Bridge

Dedication Ceremony will be Held by State Officials

Indian River
-- Continuing a tradition of allowing the public exclusive access to major construction projects before they are open to vehicle traffic the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) is happy to announce plans for a public "walk-over" of the new Indian River Inlet Bridge (Charles W. Cullen Bridge) on Sunday, May 6, from 10 am to 4 pm.

DelDOT is offering an open invitation to Delaware residents, and all interested visitors from near and far who have a desire in experiencing the magnificent structure up close. This important event is expected to attract thousands of visitors during the course of the day.

Official dedication ceremonies will be held at 1:30 pm atop the bridge. U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Governor Jack Markell, Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt, and other officials will address the crowd alongside the four soaring 250-foot high cable-stay towers, with the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Bay serving as backdrops.

The $150 million bridge project was constructed by Skanska Civil Southeast under a design-build contract with DelDOT. Sixty Delaware businesses were suppliers to the project. Delaware contractor George & Lynch Construction is completing the roadway approach work allowing for the connection of existing Route 1 to the new bridge. It is expected that the two northbound lanes and the pedestrian walkway will open to traffic prior to Memorial Day, giving the Sussex County landmark its final christening.

Free public parking for this event will be located in the Delaware Seashore State Park day-use parking lot on the south east side of the inlet. Visitors coming from the south will be able to access the parking by entering to the right before crossing the bridge. Visitors coming from the north will have to cross the bridge and then turn at the first crossing to enter the parking area. Various electronic message signs and DelDOT personnel will be on-hand to guide and direct visitors to the correct location.

Join your family, friends, and neighbors, be sure to bring your camera, and don't miss this once in a lifetime event to celebrate the completion of the Charles W. Cullen Bridge at the Indian River Inlet!

Democrats to Intercept Supreme Court Ruling on Immigration

The Supreme Court hears arguments Wednesday over Arizona’s immigration-crackdown law, but Democrats are already preparing for a potential loss by saying they’ll try to pass legislation stripping states of the power to enact their own immigration rules.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, said his legislation would establish federal primacy in immigration by blocking states from taking any action. That would not only preclude state law enforcement efforts like the Arizona model now before the court, but also would overturn a Supreme Court ruling last year that upheld a different Arizona law requiring businesses to verify their workers’ legal status.

SINGAPORE (AP) - Oil prices rose slightly to nearly $104 a barrel Wednesday in Asia after a report showed U.S. crude supplies unexpectedly fell, suggesting demand may be improving.

Benchmark oil for June delivery was up 19 cents to $103.74 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 44 cents to settle at $103.55 in New York on Tuesday.

Brent crude for June delivery was up 23 cents at $118.39 per barrel in London.

Beating of Alabama Man Not Seen as Hate Crime, Despite Claim 'Trayvon' Invoked

A racially charged beating of a white Alabama man by a throng of African-Americans is not being investigated as a hate crime, despite one witness' claim that she heard an assailant exclaim: "Now that's justice for Trayvon."

Matthew Owens, of Mobile, Ala., was assaulted with baseball bats, paint cans and other weapons at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday after telling a group of children to stop playing basketball in the middle of Delmar Drive, according to Ashley Rains, public information officer for the Mobile Police Department.

After the children left the area, a group of adults armed with weapons returned and confronted Owens, 40, in his front yard, where he was assaulted. Owens' sister, Ashley Parker, told WKRG she witnessed the attack and that there were as many as 20 assailants. Parker said she overheard one of them say, "Now that's justice for Trayvon."
