The 10 reasons why everyone should drink coffee

For years, we were told that caffeine was bad for us - and in the battle of the hot drinks, coffee always came off worse.

But today, barely a week goes by without the health benefits of the beverage being extolled.

Indeed just last week, Portuguese researchers declared that three cups of coffee a day may help people with chronic kidney disease live longer.

The research adds to the growing body of evidence that the drink has a host of health benefits – and that commonly held beliefs that coffee dehydrates you are just a myth.

So, what is the truth about coffee?

Here, Fiona Hunter, a registered nutritionist tells MailOnline how coffee can have health benefits from head to toe – and busts common myths surrounding it…

Andrew Napolitano: Justice Department Should Pick Up Where FBI Left Off on Hillary Investigation

Tuesday on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” network senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano argued the Justice Department should pick up where the FBI left off last year in investigating the Uranium One deal and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s involvement while secretary of state.

The first step he said would be to take the evidence to a grand jury and determine if there was enough for a Clinton indictment.

“I’ve argued for some time that Hillary should be indicted,” Napolitano said. “I mean, when the president fired Jim Comey, the stated reason was he dropped the ball on Hillary Clinton. Well, if he dropped the ball on Hillary Clinton, then the Justice Department should pick up that ball. That is, take the evidence that the FBI amassed against her of espionage, the failure to secure state secrets, bring it to a grand jury and see if a grand jury will indict.”

Then he went on to explain the Uranium One deal, which is laid out by Breitbart News senior editor-at-large Peter Schweizer in “Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich,” could be perceived as bribery.

Kassam: The Republican Swamp Got the Loss they Wanted, Now They’re Going to Try and Tame Us

Gillespie, as Trump noted late on Tuesday night, was scarcely a MAGA candidate

Earlier on Tuesday, Republicans Under Notional Terms (RUNTs) like Bill Kristol and Evan McMullin took to social media to discourage people thinking of voting for Ed Gillespie.

They wouldn’t have made a massive impact, if any, in the race. But they got what they really wanted: a Democrat Virginia Governor, an “upset” for the Republican Party under Trump, and a chance to pretend “this is a sign we need moderate candidates!”

Bizarrely — laughably even — the pair decided that former lobbyist Ed Gillespie was TOO pro-Trump. Ha!

A Government Of, By, And For Plutocrats

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin doesn’t exactly come across as the guy you’d want in your corner in a playground tussle. In the Trump administration, he’s been more like the kid trying to cop favor with the school bully. That, at least, is the role he seems to have taken in the Trump White House. When he isn’t circling the Sunday shows stooging for the president, he regularly plays the willing fall guy for tax policies guaranteed to stoke further inequality in America and for legislation that will remove just about any consumer protections against Wall Street.

Mnuchin, a former Goldman Sachs partner, arrived in Washington with a distinct reputation. Back in 2009, he had corralled a bundle of rich financiers to take over California’s IndyMac bank, shut down amid the 2008 foreclosure crisis by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Bought for $13.9 billion (but only $1.3 billion in actual cash), Mnuchin turned it into a genuine foreclosure machine, in the process sealing his own fate when it came to his future reputation. At the time, he didn’t appear concerned about public approval. Something far more valuable was at stake: the $200 million that, according to Bloomberg News, he raked in personally, thanks to the deal.

No such luck, of course, for the bank’s ordinary borrowers. During Mnuchin’s reign, IndyMac carried out more than 36,000 foreclosures, tossing former homeowners (including active duty military servicemen and women) onto the street without hesitation or pity by any means necessary. According to a memo obtained by investigative reporter David Dayen, OneWest, the new name that Mnuchin and his billionaire posse coined for Indybank, of which Mnuchin was now CEO and chairman, “rushed delinquent homeowners out of their homes by violating notice and waiting period statutes, illegally backdated key documents, and effectively gamed foreclosure auctions.”

Former Dem Congressman Has 1 Major Campaign Rule: Make SURE The Staff Are ‘Having Sex’

Former Congressman Tony Coehlo gave interim Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairwoman Donna Brazile some interesting and explicit advice that resonated with her during the 2016 presidential election.

“When I was tiptoeing around the muffled Clinton headquarters I thought of what my friend [former Democratic Rep.] Tony Coelho used to ask me about my campaigns. He’d always ask, ‘Are the kids fucking? Are they having sex? Are they having fun? If not, let’s create something to get that going, or otherwise we’re not going to win,'” Brazile wrote in her book “Hacks,” released Tuesday.

The Hillary Clinton presidential campaign was in a very bad state by Coelho’s standards, considering the state of campaign headquarters, according to Brazile.

Criteria included ease of acquiring a concealed carry permit, costs associated with licensure, training hours required and reciprocity with other states.

America's "Abject Servitude" Is Now Exposed

These are the poisoned fruits of a neofeudal system in which power, wealth and political influence are concentrated in the apex of the wealth-power pyramid.

Stripped of pretense, ours is a culture of rape. Apologists for the system that spawned this culture of rape claim that this violence is the work of a few scattered sociopaths. The apologists are wrong: The system generates a culture of rape.

The engine of our culture of rape is the elevation of the entitled-insider class to untouchability: they are above the law, and more equal than others in their freedom to impose every sick sociopathology known to humanity on the powerless peasants imprisoned in our noxious neofeudal system.

For the true sickness of our society and culture is measured not in the vile crimes of our entitled-insider class: it's measured by the armies of enablers, protectors, enforcers and apologists who protect the entitled-insider class from exposure and justice. After 25 years of blatant abuse of power and crimes that have yet to enter the court docket, 25 years during which the cream of the American media purposefully ignored his blatant abuses of power, the moldering putrid remains of American journalism has finally emerged from its fetid nests, trembling in the unaccustomed brightness of day, to "report," 25 years too late to save his innumerable victims, Harvey Weinstein's Army of Spies (New Yorker).

Brazile: Hillary's Campaign Was 'A Cult'

Insider acknowledges Clinton has serious health issues

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Wednesday, Former interim Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile said that Hillary Clinton’s failed 2016 presidential campaign was like a “cult”.

When Joe Scarborough asked “Why did they lose? Was it, at the end of the day, arrogance?” Brazile gave a very telling answer.

“Yes, Joe,” Brazile responded. “It was a cult; I felt like it was a cult. You could not penetrate them.”

When Gunmen Strike, You're On Your Own

Here is an often-used tactic to defend government police organizations from criticism. Whenever critics point out abusive tactics of police officers, defenders counter with: "And yet you won't refuse police help the next time there's a robber in your house!" This, we are told, illustrates that all police critics are "hypocrites."

This has always been a dishonest tactic, of course, since "consumers" of police "services" are forced to pay for the local monopoly police force, and have no other options. Government police forces have monopolized the marketplace and crowded out many private security services. Thus, calling the police to scare off some robbers on one's property is no more hypocritical than a critic of the local power company who nevertheless turns on a lightbulb. It's simply a matter of making do with a high-priced, low-quality monopolist when no competition is allowed.

Just how low these low-quality services are has become more apparent in recent months.

In the wake of yesterday's church shooting in Texas, for example, private citizens were the ones who shot back at the assailant, and then chased him down in a high speed pursuit. The police did nothing but write some reports afterward.

A few months earlier, as violence escalated during the Charlottesville riot in Virginia, the law enforcement agencies stood back and did little except crash a helicopter in the woods.

Is It Time To Catch The Wave Of Rebounding Atlantic Bluefin Tuna?

Fishermen up and down the New England Coast say it has been decades since they've been able to catch so many Atlantic bluefin tuna so fast. Once severely depleted, populations of the prized sushi fish appear to be rebounding.

Now the industry, and some scientists, say that the international commission that regulates the fish can allow a much bigger catch. But some environmental groups disagree.

Peter Speeches is a commercial fisherman who sails his 45-foot boat, the Erin & Sarah, out of a marina in Portland, Maine. His rods and reels are racked, though, and the boat has been docked for the past several weeks. That's because tuna fishermen reached their fall catch quotas earlier than ever this year.

Studies Show 'Proactive Policing' Works, But Social Cost Less Clear

Any American who pays attention to law enforcement has heard of the strategies: "broken windows," "stop and frisk," "zero tolerance." These are all variations on what's broadly known as "proactive policing": efforts to seek out and prevent the causes of crime before it happens, as opposed to a more reactive policy of just sending police when called.

During the 1990s and 2000s, these approaches were widely credited for bringing down crime rates. But in the years since Ferguson, Mo., charges of racial profiling caused proactive policing to fall out of favor. Some critics say the methods don't even work as well as advertised, and they point to the fact that the murder rate stayed low in New York even after police curtailed the "stop and frisk" tactic (more on that below).

And yet in other cities, the rollback of these methods has coincided with disturbing spikes in violent crime. Last week I reported from murder-plagued Baltimore, where the Freddie Gray riots and a Justice Department investigation pushed the department to end tactics that critics labeled "zero tolerance." Former police officials are furious, saying the abandonment of those methods has cost lives.

Arnold Ahlert: The Navy Swamp Needs Draining Too

From Obama-style social engineering to rampant corruption, the Navy is in trouble.

The Navy is sailing in very troubled waters.

A scathing Navy report released Nov. 2 reveals that two major collisions — one between the USS Fitzgerald and merchant ship ACX Crystal off the Japanese coast on June 17 that killed 17 sailors and another between the USS John McCain and oil tanker Alnic MC near Singapore on Aug. 20 that killed another 10 — were caused by “fundamental failures to responsibly plan, prepare and execute ship activities to avoid undue operational risk.”

The USS Fitzgerald’s collision was precipitated by a “compilation of failures by leadership and watchstanders,” including lookout crews who “were inattentive, disengaged in developments on the Bridge, and unaware of several nearby vessels.” As a result they “failed to visually differentiate between two vessels in close proximity” while “attempting to cross a highly congested sea lane at night.”

Moreover the Officer of the Deck, the person responsible for safe navigation of the ship, “exhibited poor seamanship by failing to maneuver as required, failing to sound the danger signal and failing to attempt to contact CRYSTAL on Bridge to Bridge radio,” the report states. The officer also failed to “call the Commanding Officer as appropriate and prescribed by Navy procedures to allow him to exercise more senior oversight and judgment of the situation.”

Is the Moore story just a GOPe Hit Job?

Seems all the usual suspects in the GOP are clamoring for Judge Roy Moore of Alabama to step aside. Yes, we now hear Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan’s people along with Kasich, McConnell and McCain as they all sing in unison. Does this sound familiar? Think Billy Bush tapes which were later proved to be leaked by one of Romney’s political hit men to NBC then the Washington Post!

If you all remember, the GOPe wanted Luther Strange (one of their cronies) to be the Republican contender for the December election to replace Jeff Sessions’s seat in the Senate. Much to their chagrin (after a stunning $30M loss) Moore came up from behind and beat Strange handedly for the spot in the upcoming election.

Now, more information is coming forth to indicate the whole sexual harassment story is a spoof to remove Moore so their candidate of choice can be written in!

And you thought Hillary was the only sore loser. Looks like the Establishment, like the Democrats, is vying to subvert the will of Alabama citizens!

Russia meddling report to Trump raises questions of motive

Fourteen days before President Trump took the oath of office, the Obama administration’s intelligence chiefs made public a unanimous assessment claiming Russian operatives, under orders from President Vladimir Putin, had orchestrated an influence campaign to help Mr. Trump win the presidential contest.

It was a watershed moment: the CIA, National Security Agency and FBI challenging the legitimacy of a U.S. presidential victory.

The conclusions in the Jan. 6 document were sharp, but the findings unraveled 10 months later, raising questions about the basis for the evidence and the motives of the Obama appointees leading the nation’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies.

“It left me scratching my head,” said one intelligence source with personal access to former Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper and former CIA Director John O. Brennan, two of the men who had signed off on the assessment.

Cost of U.S. War on Jihadists: $5.6 Trillion, 7,000 Deaths, 52,500 Injuries

The United States is expected to spend nearly $6 trillion through 2018 on government-wide costs related to the wars waged in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria since 2001, reveals a study by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs.

According to Brown University’s Cost of War project analysis, authored by Neta Crawford, the total estimated cost of U.S. wars between 2001 and 2018 amounts to about $23,386 per individual American taxpayer, which is more than three times the amount ($7,740) calculated by the Pentagon.

The Pentagon’s study, dubbed the “Estimated Cost to Each Taxpayer for the Wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria,” places the total authorized war spending on those conflicts between 2001 and 2018 at $1.5 trillion.

Unlike assessments conducted by the Pentagon and other analysts, Crawford’s estimate takes into account trillions in conflict-linked spending appropriated mainly through the U.S. Departments of Homeland Security, State, Defense, and Veteran Affairs.

The Secret Reason Trump Is So Cozy With Saudi Arabia

As a candidate, Donald Trump used uncommonly harsh language to criticize Saudi Arabia—the world’s largest oil exporter.

He called the Saudi regime the world’s biggest funder of terrorism.

He also said the Saudi government uses “our petro dollars—our very own money—to fund the terrorists that seek to destroy our people, while the Saudis rely on us to protect them!”

At another point, Trump said, “Who blew up the World Trade Center? It wasn’t the Iraqis, it was Saudi [Arabia].”

Trump also criticized Hillary Clinton for taking Saudi money for the Clinton Foundation. (They were its biggest “donors.”) He even challenged her to return the money.

He also famously got into a Twitter spat with a prominent member of the Saudi royal family, Alwaleed bin Talal.

As a candidate, Trump blasted the Saudis countless other times.

But, after he took office, Trump did a complete 180. He stopped criticizing the Saudis. In fact, he’s now singing their praises.

Biden Finally Breaks Silence – Sticks KNIFE in Hillary Clinton’s Back

I knew he would surface sooner or later over this whole Donna Brazile mess. Former Vice President Joe Biden just gave an interview to Oprah. So not shocked over that. He says he regrets he is not president right now. I bet. Pervie Uncle Joe should have run instead of Clinton. He still would have lost, but at least it would have been a legitimate race. Then he went on to say he thinks he made the right decision to not run in 2016. You mean, Obama made the right decision for you not to run, right? Because we all know that is what happened there.

“I have a regret that I am not president because I think there is so much opportunity,” Biden told Winfrey in an interview clip that aired on “Good Morning America” Thursday. “I think America is so incredibly well-positioned,” Biden said. He probably means ‘well-positioned’ for communism. And here we go with him politicizing the loss of his son, Beau Biden, to cancer in May of 2015. He has no shame. That had nothing to do with it, although it should have. Biden claims that although he was the most qualified to run, he wouldn’t have been able to give a presidential race his complete attention. That was a nice slap at Clinton right there.

Democrat Lawmaker Supports Call To Ban "Racist" National Anthem

In possibly the greatest 'virtue signal' yet, the organization last week began circulating among legislative offices two resolutions that passed at its state conference in October: one urging Congress to rescind “one of the most racist, pro-slavery, anti-black songs in the American lexicon” as the national anthem, and another in support of former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

“We owe a lot of it to Kaepernick,” California NAACP President Alice Huffman said. “I think all this controversy about the knee will go away once the song is removed.”

Veteran Unemployment Rates Fall to Record Low in Oct.

The unemployment rate for military veterans in October reached a low of just 2.7 percent, continuing a long-term downward trend in unemployment among members of the U.S. Armed Services.

Mirroring October’s overall drop in unemployment, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the improved numbers offset a decline in September that largely reflected the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Harvey in Florida and Texas.

While the unemployment rate for veterans only dropped 0.3 percent between September and October, the rate was down from 4.3 percent in October 2016 and from almost 10 percent in 2010.

For veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – referred to as post-9/11 veterans – the unemployment rate was 3.6 percent, compared to 4.7 percent in October 2016, and 10.2 percent in 2009.

Is Comcast's Ad Sales Killing Local Stations?

Over the last few months, I've noticed on cable channels like A&E and Lifetime, local advertising is pretty consistent. When you watch the locals - WBOC and WMDT - you seldom see local advertising, instead we see national ads. Considering these advertisers are now able to go directly through Comcast, it makes sense to buy ad slots over a multitude of channels instead of just the two local stations.

After last month's big slamfest over FiOS dropping WBOC along with their inability to cover local news thoroughly, why do they continue on? Sure, we'll lose jobs in Salisbury but since Day's reign began, that's become common place. A few more unemployed won't really make a difference on our highways and byways as they're already clogged as it is.

WBOC and WMDT have failed to keep up with the times. For some reason, they feel their old way of doing business is still acceptable. Given what we're seeing now, they have a serious revenue problem on their hands, not to mention the fact they don't cover the local crime, business or human interest stories with any regularity or substance. Instead, they have opted to ignore anything south of the Virginia/Maryland line and chosen to concentrate their efforts on mostly Delaware news.

Why are they still around? What purpose do they ultimately serve in our area?

Undoing the Dis-Education of Millennials

I teach in a law school. For several years now my students have been mostly Millennials. Contrary to stereotype, I have found that the vast majority of them want to learn. But true to stereotype, I increasingly find that most of them cannot think, don’t know very much, and are enslaved to their appetites and feelings. Their minds are held hostage in a prison fashioned by elite culture and their undergraduate professors.

They cannot learn until their minds are freed from that prison. This year in my Foundations of Law course for first-year law students, I found my students especially impervious to the ancient wisdom of foundational texts, such as Plato’s Crito and the Code of Hammurabi. Many of them were quick to dismiss unfamiliar ideas as “classist” and “racist,” and thus unable to engage with those ideas on the merits. So, a couple of weeks into the semester, I decided to lay down some ground rules. I gave them these rules just before beginning our annual unit on legal reasoning.

Here is the speech I gave them.

Several pastors, mostly from Texas, welcomed the use of concealed carry within their congregations, saying that they believe the presence of armed parishioners provides a line of defense that would prevent a repeat of the worst church shooting in U.S. history. Among those pastors, some also said that their churches would develop further security measures to answer potential threats, ranging from security guards to pastors carrying guns on their person while they preach.

Border Patrol losing agents faster than it can hire them

The U.S. Border Patrol is losing agents faster than it can hire them, according to a new audit released Wednesday that said competition with other federal law enforcement and the difficulty of passing a polygraph test have sapped the agency of nearly 2,000 agents it’s supposed to have.

More than 900 agents leave each year on average but the Border Patrol only hires an average of 523 a year, the Government Accountability Office said in a broad survey of staffing and deployment challenges at the key border law enforcement agency.

The law requires the agency to have a minimum of 21,370 agents on board, but it had just 19,500 agents as of May.

That’s an even bigger problem when stacked up against President Trump’s call for hiring 5,000 more agents, to reach a workforce of 26,370.

Rand Paul's neighbors rip media 'landscaping dispute' reports

The Bowling Green, Ky., neighbor who allegedly attacked Sen. Rand Paul last weekend, causing six broken ribs, was aggressively anti-Trump and anti-GOP in his social media, calling for the impeachment of the president and urging Russia investigator Robert Mueller to “fry Trump’s gonads.”

His lawyer said that politics played no part and it has been suggested that the two verbally tussled over lawn clippings, leaving the impression that the Republican Kentucky senator was a negligent landscaper.

But seven neighbors in the Rivergreen gated community told Secrets Wednesday that the Pauls are friendly homeowners who kept their property tidy.

All seven neighbors expressed shock at the “scary” attack on Paul as he was doing yard work last Saturday and they dismissed reports that it was the result of poor landscaping.

Michigan GOP-Controlled Senate Passes Concealed Carry in Church as Response to Texas Attack

Republican lawmakers in Michigan are pushing concealed carry in church as their response to the heinous November 5 attack in Texas.

They are also seeking to legalize concealed carry in K-12 schools and other public areas that are currently designated gun-free.

The changes are contained in Senate Bills 584-586, both of which passed in Michigan’s Republican-controlled Senate on Wednesday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the bills create “enhanced concealed pistol licenses” that congregants, clergy, teachers, and administrators, could obtain in order to carry in those areas which are currently off limits. The goal is to ensure large groups of innocent people are not sitting unarmed and defenseless if someone intent on doing harm bursts through the door.

FEMA Plans to Fly Nearly 3,000 Puerto Ricans to NY, Florida

Over a month after Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm and left most of the island without electricity, running water, or food, FEMA plans to fly nearly 3,000 people from the island's shelters to New York and Florida, BuzzFeed News reports.

"Based on states selected by the governor, FEMA is working to establish host-state agreements with both Florida and New York to accept those identified survivors," a spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency told BuzzFeed News.

Fifty-five people died during the hurricane or later as a direct result of the storm, according to the territory's government. Much of the territory, including the outer islands of Vieques and Culebra, remains without electricity, and thousands of miles of roads are still closed. Few hospitals are functioning and thousands are displaced.

Believers rally around Colorado cake-baker before Supreme Court case

Leaders from the Catholic, Jewish and Mormon communities — as well as other evangelical small-business owners — came together Wednesday to offer their encouragement at a rally Wednesday at Colorado Christian University.

Oral argument is scheduled Dec. 5 before the Supreme Court in the Masterpiece case, the first to be considered by the high court involving whether bakers, florists, filmmakers and other creative professionals who cater to weddings must serve same-sex ceremonies.

“I don’t know how the justices will rule in this particular case, but I do hope they will treat this very important liberty with reverence,” said Denver attorney and law professor Stephen Collis, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dylann Roof Sentenced to Death, 1st to Get Death Penalty for Federal Hate Crimes

Dylann Roof, 22, has been sentenced to death for killing nine black churchgoers during a Bible study in Charleston, South Carolina.

The jury's decision had to be unanimous to sentence Roof to death. This is the first time a death penalty verdict was rendered in a federal hate crimes case, the Justice Department said.

The jury began deliberating Roof's fate earlier today, after Roof told the jury in a closing statement, "I still feel like I had to do it."

The verdict comes at the end of the federal death penalty case in which he was convicted of hate crimes resulting in death, among other charges. Roof also faces a state trial in which he may again face the death penalty.

Melvin Graham, brother of slain churchgoer Cynthia Hurd, said after the sentence was read, "Today we had justice for my sister."

The secret to contentment

Spending just 15 minutes alone a day can mean the difference between feeling anxious and calm.

A study has found setting aside a quarter of an hour a day makes people feel more calm and peaceful, whether spent in quiet contemplation or with their nose in a good book.

Being alone, particularly by choice, has been found to reduce people's anger, stress and anxiety.

The downside is loneliness, which can also set in after 15 minutes, but researchers found thinking positive thoughts could help to overturn this feeling.

The results of the study, led by the University of Rochester, are based on four separate experiments with up to almost 350 people asked to spend time alone.

'Epidemic' of loneliness affecting families

More than half of parents suffer from loneliness as they feel ‘cut off’ from friends and family, a new survey has revealed.

One in five (21 per cent) have felt isolated in the last week amid the pressures of bringing up their sons and daughters.

The study from Action for Children warns that an ‘epidemic’ of loneliness in the country is having a ‘devastating’ impact on the lives of children, young people and families.

The charity surveyed more than 2,000 UK parents with children aged 18 and below as part of its month-long partnership with the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness.
