Coronavirus Monday updates: Va. schools closed through end of academic year, NC schools closed through May 15

Virginia public schools will remain closed through the rest of the academic year, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam announced Monday.

“School closures are necessary to minimize the speed at which COVID19 spreads and protect the capacity of our healthcare system,” Northam said.

Virginia becomes just the second state to close public schools through the end of the academic year, joining Kansas.

Northam says school division leaders will decide how they’ll educate their students through the end of the school year, and the state’s department of education will issue guidance. The announcement came about an hour after North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper delayed the opening of state public schools until May 15.

Americans Across Country Embrace Patriotism During Coronavirus: ‘Put the Flag Up’

Many Americans across the country are turning to patriotism to find hope during the coronavirus outbreak.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) called on his constituents to rally around Old Glory during a Friday press conference.

“We’ve been attacked by this virus. We have to pull together,” DeWine said, according to WOWK. “Fly that flag every single day.”

DeWine told the media about the act of one 7-year-old girl.

The governor said he received an email from the girl’s mother which said, “Mr. DeWine, we do not have an American flag to hang outside our home. Today after your news conference, my 7-year-old daughter made this flag for our house in honor of your request.”

“I would like to thank 7-year-old Elaina in Radnor, Ohio for the beautiful flag,” DeWine said.

Coronavirus Traces Lingered in Vacated Cruise Cabins for 17 Days

Publishers Notes: If only our dipsh!t Governor educated himself he'd shut the state down before this gets completely out of control.

Traces of new coronavirus were found on surfaces in cruise-ship cabins for as many as 17 days after passengers left, researchers said, though it wasn’t possible to determine whether they caused any infections.

Researchers looked at the rooms of infected passengers aboard the Diamond Princess, both those who showed symptoms and those who didn’t, according to a study Monday in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

The ship, operated by Carnival Corp.’s Princess Cruises, had more than 700 coronavirus cases. It was quarantined for a time off of Yokohama, Japan, and was the largest outbreak outside of mainland China at one point.

A previous analysis found that the virus remained viable on plastic and stainless steel for up to three days, although levels fell dramatically over time. It was less stable on copper, where no viable virus was found after 4 hours, and cardboard, which was clean after 24 hours, according to the report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

'Ellen is one of the meanest people alive': Twitter users share hilarious ‘most insane real stories' about talk show host

Former employees and fans of Ellen DeGeneres have taken to Twitter to blast the renowned talk show host for her alleged 'mean' behavior.

Comedian Kevin T. Porter kicked the entire social media movement off on Friday, when he sent out a tweet urging people to message him 'the most insane stories [they've] heard' about DeGeneres in an effort to raise money for the Los Angeles Food Bank.

Shortly after posting, Porter was flooded with written accounts by various Twitter users who claimed to have had less than savory interactions with Ellen - who he labeled as 'notoriously one of the meanest people alive' - over the years.

'Right now we all need a little kindness. You know, like Ellen Degeneres always talks about!,' wrote Porter. '[And] I'll match every [story] w/ $2 to @LAFoodBank.'

SHOCK: Dem Stock Coronavirus Package With Green New Deal Handouts, Post Office Bailout, Union Cash

The Democrats, led by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), pulled an eleventh hour political move Sunday night, voting to pull a massive coronavirus recovery package after spending days negotiating with Republicans and top administration officials, in order to produce their own hastily constructed stimulus bill packed with handouts to Democratic constituencies.

The move angered Americans who are desperate to find some solace in social and economic quarantine and incensed Senate Republicans who spent days at the bargaining table with prominent Democrats, like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), under the impression they were hammering out a mutually acceptable, bipartisan stimulus package that could get money to individual Americans quickly while preserving some funds for businesses that could suffer long-term financial harm.

Pelosi, who had been on recess, sheltering in her home district, returned to Washington, D.C., Sunday night and upended the process, ordering Senate Democrats to restrict voting, kill the bill, and make way for a second stimulus package, which will hit the House floor at 2pm EST Monday.

The Final Steps to Defeating COVID-19

Ok. Deep breath. Feel better?

Most of the nation survived the first full week of social distancing. We distanced ourselves, assisted our children as they engaged in “home learning,” and attempted to make life as normal as possible for our families.

The stock market tanked. Thousands of small businesses went bankrupt, millions closed their doors and wonder if they will be able to survive once they re-open.

Amidst all of the attempts to flatten the curve, increase the number of testing locales and kits available, and randomly requiring people to stay at home the number of confirmed infections went up—while the percentages of deaths related to them went down.

Chicago Doctor’s Blunt Speech About COVID-19 Hits Home Across the Country

Dr. Emily Landon is the chief infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Chicago Medicine, who moments after Pritzker issued the ordinance to take effect Saturday evening, took to the stand with a 7-minute-long speech that went viral after striking a chord for many individuals.

NYT Spins Headlines to Cover Dems Blocking COVID-19 Aid Bill

Democrats blocked a bill to provide Americans with an economic stimulus to weather the harm to the economy the Wuhan coronavirus quarantines have wrought.

Democrat senators had reportedly worked on it with Republicans all weekend, had it ready to go, when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi allegedly stepped in and quashed the deal.

Why? Because the woman who so successfully shepherded the impeachment fiasco may be trying a little more gamesmanship. Too bad, American people or the American economy, if you lose in the process. Democrats are playing their petty little power games again.

The Chief of Staff and Communications Director for Rep. Mark Meadows, Ben Williamson:
Senate spends all weekend negotiating a bipartisan deal. Agreement reached. Pelosi flies in from California, whips out her unrelated “wishlist,” and says no. Senate Democrats then vote against proceeding on a bill they negotiated.

— Ben Williamson (@_WilliamsonBen) March 22, 2020
Because if they drag it out a little longer, they can do in some more businesses, cost people more jobs and that might hurt President Donald Trump, so it can be his “Katrina.” This is just despicable.

But apparently Americans who read the New York Times aren’t supposed to really understand what went down, at least not if you check how the headline on the story about the Democrats blocking the stimulus package has changed.

The Doctor Who Helped Defeat Smallpox Explains What's Coming

Epidemiologist Larry Brilliant, who warned of pandemic in 2006, says we can beat the novel coronavirus—but first, we need lots more testing.

LARRY BRILLIANT SAYS he doesn’t have a crystal ball. But 14 years ago, Brilliant, the epidemiologist who helped eradicate smallpox, spoke to a TED audience and described what the next pandemic would look like. At the time, it sounded almost too horrible to take seriously. “A billion people would get sick," he said. “As many as 165 million people would die. There would be a global recession and depression, and the cost to our economy of $1 to $3 trillion would be far worse for everyone than merely 100 million people dying, because so many more people would lose their jobs and their health care benefits, that the consequences are almost unthinkable.”

Now the unthinkable is here, and Brilliant, the Chairman of the board of Ending Pandemics, is sharing expertise with those on the front lines. We are a long way from 100 million deaths due to the novel coronavirus, but it has turned our world upside down. Brilliant is trying not to say “I told you so” too often. But he did tell us so, not only in talks and writings, but as the senior technical advisor for the pandemic horror film Contagion, now a top streaming selection for the homebound. Besides working with the World Health Organization in the effort to end smallpox, Brilliant, who is now 75, has fought flu, polio, and blindness; once led Google’s nonprofit wing, Google.org; co-founded the conferencing system the Well; and has traveled with the Grateful Dead.

We talked by phone on Tuesday. At the time, President Donald Trump’s response to the crisis had started to change from “no worries at all” to finally taking more significant steps to stem the pandemic. Brilliant lives in one of the six Bay Area counties where residents were ordered to shelter in place. When we began the conversation, he’d just gotten off the phone with someone he described as high government official, who asked Brilliant “How the fuck did we get here?” I wanted to hear how we’ll get out of here. The conversation has been edited and condensed.

Steven Levy: I was in the room in 2006 when you gave that TED talk. Your wish was “Help Me Stop Pandemics.” You didn't get your wish, did you?

Larry Brilliant: No, I didn't get that wish at all, although the systems that I asked for have certainly been created and are being used. It's very funny because we did a movie, Contagion—

We're all watching that movie now.

People say Contagion is prescient. We just saw the science. The whole epidemiological community has been warning everybody for the past 10 or 15 years that it wasn't a question of whether we were going to have a pandemic like this. It was simply when. It's really hard to get people to listen. I mean, Trump pushed out the admiral on the National Security Council, who was the only person at that level who's responsible for pandemic defense. With him went his entire downline of employees and staff and relationships. And then Trump removed the [early warning] funding for countries around the world.

House Coronavirus Bill Extends Work Permits for Indian, Chinese Visa Workers

The House coronavirus spending bill allows roughly 500,000 college graduate visa-workers from China, India, and elsewhere to stay in their U.S. jobs, regardless of job losses by American graduates in the economic meltdown, according to a lobby group for H-1B workers.

The measure would prevent U.S. graduates from getting hundreds of thousands of college-grade jobs as the foreign workers’ visas expire — despite the colossal job losses being caused by China’s Wuhan virus.

The rule would even allow foreign H-1B workers who are fired to stay and compete for any jobs that come open during the epidemic.

“We have been working behind the scenes to address the immediate concerns of a lot of immigrants,” claimed the Facebook post by Immigration Voice, which was posted around 5:00 PM EST.

Dermatologist settles age-old debate: You should always shower at night

To shower at night or in the morning, that is the question. If you're a morning person, you'd only ever lather up in the wee hours. And if you're a night owl, you probably strongly believe that nighttime showering is where it's at. But is there any science to back up which one is truly ideal?

While you might shower in the morning to wake yourself up before work, you might want to reconsider.

According to Dr. Samer Jaber, a New York dermatologist, washing your body and face at night is important for your skin health – especially during the spring and summer months.

"If you're out all day and sweaty or working out you should definitely shower before going to bed," he told the Mail Online.

Nolte: Unstable Media Demand Blackout of Trump’s Coronavirus Briefings

America’s increasingly unstable and dangerous establishment media are calling for a full blackout of President Trump’s daily coronavirus press conferences.

Think about that for a moment…

For the first time since World War II, for the first time in nearly 80 years, Americans have no idea what their country will look like a year from now, and the corporate media want to impose a full blackout on the daily briefings the American president is making to the American people.

There’s a lot of jokes out there about the hypocrisy of how this demand is coming from the same media that had a tantrum over the White House canceling the daily press briefings. But this time we’re talking about something so much more than hypocrisy.

We are currently in the middle of global pandemic, a state of siege that, in just two weeks, has shut down our economy and locked many of us up in our homes, either by government decree of just plain old fear, and…

In a time of national crisis, the left-wing fascists in the media want to use their corporate monopoly to put a stop to the president of the United States communicating directly with the American people who elected him.

Surgeon General: "Things are going to get worse before they get better"

Doctors and nurses confronting the expanding coronavirus pandemic say getting basic protective equipment, such as masks and gowns, and life-saving equipment, such as ventilators, remains a big concern. By Monday there were more than 35,000 reported cases of COVID-19 in the U.S.; more than 470 people had died.

On "CBS This Morning" Monday, the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, said, "I didn't expect to be starting off my week with such a dire message for America, but the numbers are going to get worse this week. Things are going to get worse before they get better. And we really need everyone to understand this is serious, to lean into what they can do to flatten the curve."

With regard to the warnings from health officials and governors to the Trump administration that shortages of critical medical supplies will be catastrophic, Dr. Adams said, "I'm getting those calls every minute of the day. I got calls from people literally while I was sitting here waiting to talk to you. I want the health care workers of America to understand, these are my colleagues, these are my friends, and I will not rest until you all have the tools you need to keep yourselves safe.

Ohio halts abortions over coronavirus, sending abortion advocates into full-scale meltdown

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost has halted abortion procedures in the Buckeye State over the growing coronavirus outbreak, resulting in a full-scale meltdown from abortion advocates.

On Friday, Yost informed of Ohio's biggest abortion clinics — Women's Med Center in Dayton and Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio's Cincinnati Surgery Center — that they needed to immediately stop providing abortions.

"You and your facility are ordered to immediately stop performing non-essential and elective surgical abortions. Non-essential surgical abortions are those that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient," Yost wrote, CBS News reported.

The stoppage applies to all abortion clinics, according to WKRC-TV.

Harvey Weinstein tests positive for coronavirus in prison: Report

Weinstein, 68, is being held in isolation at Wende Correctional Facility in New York after being one of two inmates there to test positive for the coronavirus, officials at the prison said, according to the Niagara Gazette.

Weinstein spokeswoman Juda Engelmayer, however, said that her team "has not heard anything like that yet" when contacted Sunday regarding the former Hollywood producer's diagnoses.

Justice Department Reportedly Asks Congress for Indefinite Detention Powers

The Justice Department is using the COVID-19 outbreak to press for sweeping new powers that include being able to detain Americans indefinitely without a trial, Politico reports.

The department is asking Congress to allow the U.S. attorney general to ask courts to suspend court proceedings. These include "any statutes or rules of procedure otherwise affecting pre-arrest, post-arrest, pre-trial, trial, and post-trial procedures in criminal and juvenile proceedings and all civil process and proceedings," reports Betsy Woodruff Swan, citing DOJ documents presented to Congress.

In other words, the Justice Department would be able to postpone trials, hearings, and other procedural steps that follow arrest. That represents a potentially huge violation of the constitutional right to a speedy trial.

Those powers would apply "whenever the district court is fully or partially closed by virtue of any natural disaster, civil disobedience, or other emergency situation," Woodruff Swan writes, and would remain in place for "one year following the end of the national emergency."

Levin: 'People are sick and dying and Pelosi is playing games'

"Life, Liberty & Levin" host Mark Levin accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., of "exploiting this crisis to advance her radical agenda," after she announced Sunday that Democrats would be introducing their own stimulus bill to address the ongoing economic collapse amid the coronavirus -- all while the Republican-controlled Senate considered its own legislation.

"1. Pelosi’s poisonous politics feeds the Wuhan virus. She’s exploiting this crisis to advance her radical agenda. She must be exposed and condemned for the diabolical huckster that she is," Levin wrote on Twitter, referencing the city in China where the virus originated.

"2. People are sick and dying and Pelosi is playing games. Apparently the TRILLIONS the Republicans want to spend isn’t enough," he added. "Sickening."

Pelosi's announcement, which came as the House returned from its weeklong recess, frustrated many Senate Republicans who have worked through their planned recess this week to craft the urgent economic-relief legislation.

Dereliction of Duty by Ferguson and Jones

Ten Days Ago.

That small length of time seems like it was weeks or months ago at this point. But that day, the very day of the Governor’s proclamation of a State of Emergency, that was the day that I suggested the Maryland General Assembly adopt a budget and adjourn immediately. I even said at the time;
There is also the human factor of all of this too. Every day the General Assembly is in session, hundreds of people are still milling around the State House. Essential personnel. Police. Credentialed Media. Legislators. It only takes one person being infected in that building to create a serious problem. If legislators get infected, they take it back to their families, their homes, and their district. That’s how you wind up with the virus being spread even further.

And that says nothing of the actual legislators themselves. Let’s be honest; a lot of members of the General Assembly are older and are members of an age cohort more susceptible to serious health risks and death from this disease.
Is that price one Democrats are really willing to pay to get a tax hike?

Sometimes I hate being right. Because we learned to today that one person being infected in that building is something that actually happened:

Maryland House Speaker Adrienne A. Jones’ office alerted members of the General Assembly on Sunday afternoon that a committee staff member has tested positive for the new coronavirus.

Doctors say coronavirus patients often feel better right before their condition dramatically worsens and they end up hospitalized

Doctors have warned that people diagnosed with COVID-19 will often see a break in symptoms before their condition suddenly worsens.

Physicians across the country are beginning to get a better grasp of the deadly novel coronavirus as the number of US cases continues to climb - surpassing 30,000 as of Sunday afternoon.

The symptoms are often mild early on, with patients complaining of slight coughs, headaches and low-grade fevers.

Dr Joshua Denson, a pulmonary medicine and critical care physician at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans who has treated about 15 to 20 COVID-19 patients, described the first phase of the disease as a 'slow burn'.

Merkel In Quarantine After Contact With Infected Doctor: Italy Bans All Movement Inside The Country

It was not immediately clear if as a result, Germany contingency plans are activated and Merkel's chancellorship is delegated to someone else until she is cleared of being infected.

And to think that just a few hours earlier Merkel was out and about, doing her own shopping, which some twitter commentator found "oddly comforting."

Europe is clamping down on any person-to-person contract in what can only be described as an unprecedented lockdown.

On Sunday, Germany, whose coronavirus cases soared in the past week, announced it would ban gatherings of more than two people. And while Germany stopped short of forcibly confining people to their homes - as Wuhan did - it will prevent citizens meeting in groups for at least two weeks, with only families and people sharing a home exempt, Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday. Restaurants will be closed except for takeout and delivery services.

Taxpayer Services Phone Access to End at Close of Business Today

Taxpayers can email questions; Longer response times expected

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (March 23, 2020) - In order to protect employees' health while serving the needs of Maryland taxpayers, Comptroller Peter Franchot today announced that Taxpayer Services call center agents will no longer be staffing the 1-800-MD-TAXES phone lines following the close of business at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2020. Taxpayers must email their tax questions to taxhelp@marylandtaxes.gov. Response times may be affected as limited staff will be focused on processing tax returns and issuing refunds.

"For many Marylanders who are financially struggling to survive this crisis, their tax refunds will be a huge relief, so we want our very limited on-site workforce remaining to prioritize getting that money to them as quickly as possible," said Comptroller Franchot. "By extending the filing and payment deadline for individual and corporate income taxes to July 15, as well as postponing most business tax payments until June 1, we've given taxpayers extra breathing room and allowed our staff to continue answering taxpayer questions without having to report to state offices."

Essential employees will concentrate on processing income tax returns and issuing refunds as quickly as possible. All mission critical staff who are reporting to their offices must take all necessary public health precautions, including wellness screenings upon entry, proper sanitation at all times and spatial distancing between workers.

Stop The Coronabailout From Raining Your Money On Corporate Lobbyists Instead Of Struggling Americans

Congressional leaders are likely to put a very ugly deal in front of the American people, and if it passes, America may be unrecognizable after this pandemic. But there is a way to stop it, if people on the populist left and people on the populist right work together.

Here’s the situation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and the Trump administration are negotiating a bailout package to address the coronavirus crisis. There’s been a lot of chatter about the need to support workers as the economy goes into a freeze. This is happening around the world; the British government, for instance, is willing to pay 80 percent of worker wages during this downturn for those affected by the crisis.

But in the United States, our leaders seem to be falling prey to what can only be called a corporate frenzy of favor-seeking. “Any time there is a crisis and Washington is in the middle of it is an opportunity for guys like me,” said one lobbyist.

The New York Democrat joined Tapper on his CNN show Sunday and claimed, “We’re hearing it every step of the way from this administration. First, we were hearing it was a hoax. Then we were hearing that everything was fine. Then we were hearing that the fundamentals of the economy was OK until the crash comes. And we cannot wait until people start really dying in large numbers to start production.”

A Trump campaign staffer called attention to the Democratic congresswoman’s claim on Twitter, saying it “would've been a great time for a fact check” from Tapper, who declined to push back on the statement during the on-air segment.

Gov. Hogan Slams NYC Mayor de Blasio for Blatant Lies About Coronavirus Response

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) on Sunday slammed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for saying not enough is being done to combat the Wuhan coronavirus.

"I understand people out there are concerned about when is it going to look better. Just know that people all over the place are working as hard as they possibly can to fight this hidden enemy," Hogan explained. "And it's going to take all of us, not only local governments, the cities, like the mayor, the state governments, all the governors, the federal government."

According to Hogan, the Wuhan coronavirus impacts each and every person in the country, which is why the response needs to be coordinated on all levels of government.

"We don't know how long or how bad it's gonna be but it's going to continue until we get it stopped," the governor said. "We're just gonna keep fighting it 24-hours a day until we can get it done."
