English Language Lab

English Lab Volunteers Increase Hours

WHAT: Library Increases Lab Hours with Volunteers

WHO: English language learners

WHEN: now

WHERE: Wicomico Public Library, Main Library

SALISBURY, MD – Wicomico Public Library is increasing hours at its English Language Learning Lab, thanks to the help of dedicated volunteers. The lab is now staffed whenever the Main Library is open, with Lab hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
Volunteer Katie Potvin has been helping in the lab for about six weeks. She volunteers because she is planning to major in TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages), and this position gives her practice in the field.
Evelyn Gomez volunteers because she thinks it’s an important place for the community where people can learn English for free and that is a big help. “My mom has used the lab. I know a lot of people who don’t speak English and I tell them to come in because it’s free, there’s no time limit, and it’s easy” Gomez says.
Potvin says, “One day while working in the lab, a boy and his friend/tutor from Salisbury University came in, and after finishing the lesson he taught his friend and me how to write ‘okie dokie’ in Korean characters. It was really fun.”
Wicomico Public Library received $15,000 to support outreach to county residents who are learning English and becoming citizens. The Library is one of 150 libraries to receive such funding nationwide, and one of only 11 that received funding in 2012 and 2013 from the American Library Association and Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Funds are used to build capacity, strengthen literacy services and reach out to new library customers. The Library has already expanded its language learning collection, provided information on library services in several languages, and conducted open house programs and tours to introduce library services. The Lab provides access to online language programs, citizenship education programs, basic skills programs and more.

State Department Thief

A former State Department contract specialist has pleaded guilty to funneling millions of dollars to a company she set up with her husband. Kathleen McGrade worked in the State Department office that awards contracts for construction on U.S. embassies. She never told anyone that she had opened a construction company with her husband. She negotiated nearly $53 million in contracts with the company, Sterling Royale Group. A news article in 2011 exposed the fraud. It revealed McGrade and her husband had bought houses, a yacht and other luxury items on the State Department's dime. McGrade and her husband, Brian Collingsworth, have agreed to forfeit the items. They face up to 30 years in prison each.

The Pampered, Good Life Of Fort Hood Shooter

Nearly four years after Islamist Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan shouted “Allahu akbar!” (“Allah is greater!”) and brutally murdered 14 people (including an unborn baby) and injured 30 others at Fort Hood, Texas, he now receives free helicopter rides from the local jail nearly every day, lives in a private room built to accommodate his medical needs, wears a beard against Army regulations, travels with his own security detail, has received numerous trial delays and collects a full salary of about $80,000 a year – all while many of his victims say they’ve been forgotten.

According to KXAS-TV, the NBC News affiliate in Dallas, the Army psychiatrist has been paid more than $278,000 since the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting because the military has said it cannot suspend his pay without a conviction.

Hasan, 42, is facing 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder as his trial begins Tuesday. The New York Times reported the Army has spent more than $5 million on Hasan’s case and secured the courthouse with massive sand-packed barriers to protect him from explosions.

USPS Saturday Beer & Wine Deliveries

You might have to say goodbye to Saturday mail drops but hello to beer and wine deliveries. Both would be possible under a Senate bill to help the Postal Service cut costs. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Tom Carper and Ranking Member Tom Coburn introduced the package. If it becomes a law, the Postal Service would have one more year to deliberate ending Saturday mail delivery. It would not be able to close mail processing plants for another two years. But it could save money from changes in how pensions and retirees health care costs are calculated.

Personal 'Obamacare' Accounts Debut

You can now open your own personal “Obamacare” account — but you’ll have to wait a while before you can actually use it to pick a health insurance plan.

Just eight weeks before the Oct. 1 launch of open enrollment under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul law, administration officials announced Monday that the Affordable Care Act is a step closer to reality for millions of uninsured Americans.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said consumers can now go online to healthcare.gov and create personal accounts by establishing a username and password.

CIA Was Running Arms In Benghazi

The Telegraph reports that the CIA has been regularly polygraphing operatives to see if anyone is talking about a gun running operation that was taking place out of Benghazi prior to the 9.11.12 attack.

According to the report, 35 CIA operatives were working in Benghazi when the attack took place. They were allegedly in an "annex near the consulate [working] on a project to supply missiles from Libyan armories to Syrian rebels."

The Telegraph says more Americans were hurt in the attack than early reports indicated, but only losses among State Department personnel had been reported to Congress. This was because "CIA chiefs were actively working to ensure the real nature of its operations in the city did not get out."

Unlike Adult Use, Teen Pot Smoking Causes Long-Term Damage

Adolescents who smoke pot regularly may suffer long-term problems, including permanent brain damage. However, according to a study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the same isn't true for adult smokers.

Also, there's an increased risk of youth smokers developing serious psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. The new research, which attempts to lay out the long-term side effects of adolescent marijuana smoking, was conducted on mice.

"Children who start around pre-adolescence, 13-15 years of age, tend to develop very severe deficits and these include a very high incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and attention deficit disorders, as well as, long- term permanent reductions in intelligence as measured by IQ tests," says Asaf Keller, a professor of anatomy and neurobiology with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the senior author of the study.

Exclusive-RNC To NBC, CNN: Dump Hillary Docs Or We Will Dump Debates

On Monday, RNC Chair Reince Priebus sent stinging letters to NBC and CNN concerning their recently announced decisions to produce films celebrating the life of Hillary Clinton. The RNC sees the odd programing move as an in-kind contribution to Clinton's presumed campaign for President in 2016. As a result, the party will formally bar Republicans from partnering with the networks on any primary or Presidential debates in 2016.

Priebus wrote to CNN:
I find CNN’s actions disturbing and disappointing. Your credibility as a supposedly unbiased news network will most certainly be jeopardized by the decision to show political favoritism and produce an extended commercial for Secretary Clinton’s nascent campaign.

And to NBC:
I find this disturbing and disappointing. NBC cannot purport to be a neutral party in American politics, and the credibility of NBC News, already damaged by the partisanship of MSNBC, will be further undermined by the actions of NBC Universal executives who have taken it upon themselves to produce an extended commercial for Secretary Clinton’s nascent campaign.

Half Of $1 Trillion In Federal Student Loan Debt Unpaid

About half of the outstanding $1 trillion in federal student loan debt in the U.S. isn’t being repaid. And 1 out of 8 borrowers are defaulting on their loans despite unprecedented federal attempts to help.

An analysis released Monday by the CFPB shows borrowers are struggling to repay their loans and are seemingly unaware of options that could them help avoid default or forbearance.

“That can have serious consequences for their economic future,” said Rohit Chopra, the bureau’s student loan ombudsman. “The troubling part is that many of those defaults could have been avoided if borrowers knew about their options and were able to easily enroll in them.”

ARMED HUSBAND DISHES OUT ‘LETHAL DOSE OF TEXAS JUSTICE’ AFTER SUSPECTS KIDNAP HIM AND HIS WIFE, THEN FORCE THEM TO ROB BANK

A pair of suspected criminals got what the Huffington Post described as a “lethal dose of Texas justice” last week after allegedly kidnapping a couple and then forcing them to rob a bank.

Investigators are not releasing the names of the couple, but believe the suspects knew the wife worked at First National Bank of Eagle Lake in Columbus, Texas, or they would’ve have staked out the couple’s home and forced her to withdraw an undisclosed amount of money from the bank after-hours.

After the robbery, police say the suspects — identified as 20-year-old Jordan Kutach and 21-year-old Preston Kutach — forced the husband to drive the group in his truck down Highway 71.

Scare Tactics, Lies And Intimidation

As it turns out, there is more to the story about the anti-terrorism task force’s visit to the family who was suspiciously Googling backpacks and pressure cookers.

The Google searches were the basis for the visit, but the former employer of Michelle Catalano’s husband was the person who put the searches together and thought, “Wow, these people must be terrorists.”

It also seems, according to Catalano’s clarification, that the men who searched the home and questioned her husband, wanted the family to believe that they had this omnipotent power to catalogue their searches.

The Radical Agenda For America

Posted on July 30, 2013  Herb London London Center for Policy Research [info@londoncenter.org]

Over the last thirty years (nothing precise about this time frame) radicals in the United States have worked tirelessly and relentlessly to change this society in a manner consistent with their own agenda. The method for doing so is not secret. In fact, it is transparently clear.

The first goal is to create an Electoral map that will guarantee the election of left-wing presidents. To accomplish this goal one state in particular has to change from red to blue: Texas. On its face, this project seems impossible. Texas, as Governor Perry has noted, is crimson red and “will stay that way.” But suppose the electorate expands by registering new voters, particularly illegals who could be granted amnesty through recent immigration proposals and unregistered voters.

As Senator Ted Cruz has noted, “If that happens, no republican will ever again win the White House.” Conservative spokeswoman, Anita MonCrief, contends, “If they go for amnesty, we will find ourselves doing a post mortem over the GOP’s suicide.” Should Texas become a reliable blue state, its 38 electoral votes will virtually guarantee a Democratic president into the distant future.

The second goal is to develop dependency on government assistance for a majority of Americans. With close to 50 million people on food stamps, 45 million on Medicaid, 35 million in Section 8 housing and 52 million receiving welfare assistance, an America that was once based on self reliance and personal liberty is disappearing in plain sight. This dependency comes with the potential for enslavement since one will need Big Brother for the very essentials of life.

The third goal is the reformulation of American voting trends through the mobilization of minority voters. It is instructive that in the 2012 election President Obama obtained support from only 39 percent of white voters, less than former Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis received in 1988, a year when he was trounced by George Herbert Walker Bush.

President Obama won by carrying 93 percent of African American voters, 71 percent of Latino voters and 73 percent of Asian voters. Here is the new formulation of presidential victory – appeal to minorities through a divide and conquer strategy. Moreover, this is merely the beginning. By mid century whites in the U.S. will be a distinct minority. Presumably, minority opinion and attitudes could shift. The nation has a history of electoral movements in unpredictable directions. At the moment, however, history appears to be moving in a leftward direction with little change in sight.

Of course only time will tell if this radical strategy will work. “The eyes of Texas are upon you” goes the popular verse, but it would be just as apt to say “the eyes of America should be on Texas.” This is America’s electoral weathervane.

Should the radical tactics yield a victory in that state, any hope of retaining the traditions associated with America’s democratic republic will be lost. It is remarkable that conservatives do not get it. They are in a wilderness of false hope and gnashing of teeth as the radical blunderbuss flares forward. Wake up America – your future is at stake.

Trust The State?

It was during my freshman year of college that I first encountered the works of that most eminent American political philosopher, Pogo Possum. Channeled through cartoonist, Walt Kelly, Pogo provided an alternative to the “Ozzie and Harriet” mindset that kept most Americans from engaging in those twin towers of political sin: asking questions and speaking truth. In those post-World War II years in which the state had to hurriedly find a new threat with which to keep Americans under its control – lest they mistakenly think that the end of that war presaged a world at peace – the Cold War bogeyman was put together.

While Pogo was decidedly a left-of-center person – Ayn Rand had yet to arrive on campuses to challenge collectivist thought and behavior – he was one of the remnants of the spirit of classical liberalism whose ranks were rapidly being conscripted into the service of statism. At a time when Sen. Joe McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee were doing their best to convince Boobus Americanus that “active agents of the communist conspiracy” were entrenched everywhere, Pogo went forth from his meager homesite in Okefenokee Swamp to find these “enemy” forces. Upon his return, he confided to his neighbors that “we have met the enemy, and they is us!”

10 Reasons Why Obamacare Is Going To Ruin Your Medical Care… And Your Life

Not to mention that under the new health care system, you may well end up dead…

Guards Allegedly Forced Into Union Day Before Right-To-Work Implemented

The federal government is investigating a Michigan labor group and company for forcing three employees into the union on the eve of the state's implementation of right-to-work laws.

Three security guards with AlliedBarton Security Services filed complaints with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) after the company signed an exclusive agreement with United Protective Workers of America (UPWA) Local 1.

The workers, who guard a Dearborn-based Ford plant, alleged that the agreement forced all employees to pay full dues into union coffers and membership played a deciding role in bonuses and promotions.

"These are bullying tactics unions have chosen to use and obviously an investigation should be launched," said Annie Patnaude, deputy state director of Americans for Prosperity-Michigan. "Unfortunately, a lot of this has been going on, explicit and implied threats if workers exercise the new freedom."

Last Hurrah Of The Interventionists?

In what a Washington Post columnist describes as a rout of Rand Paul isolationism, the Senate just voted overwhelmingly to send another $1.5 billion in foreign aid to Egypt.

The House voted 400-20 to impose new sanctions on Iran’s oil exports, two days before Iran’s new president, elected on a pledge to re-engage the West on the nuclear issue, takes his oath.

Do these triumphs of AIPAC and the War Party, of neocons and liberal internationalists, tell us where we are going? Or are they the last hurrahs of the interventionists, as America’s long retreat proceeds apace.

If we take what Richard Nixon called “the long view,” the trend line seems unmistakable. Under President Obama, America has pulled all U.S. forces out of Iraq and has scheduled a full withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014.

Geithner To Advise Obama On Next Fed Chairman

While assuring the world that he will not give advantage to Larry Summers, we wonder if the meeting with the President will sound a little like this?

A Letter To The Editor: Mandatory Student Health Insurance

Joe,

When I first started school at UMES back in 2009, insurance was not necessary. The only thing the university cared about is if you had all your shots, meningitis shots, etc. All of a sudden one year, we had to start paying for Student Health Insurance or show proof we had insurance elsewhere. I disputed this with the school with out success.

UMES had stated that they required insurance for any student enrolled, even if your not living on campus. A $50 fee every semester was tacked on to everyone's tuition and fees who didnt have insurance. The FAFSA federal aid doesnt cover it, your scholarships cannot cover it, it must be paid out of the students pocket.

Recently I get this post card in the mail stating that they will no longer be "providing", (what I call forcing), insurance because of OBAMACARE. Not only are they suspending that but you don't have to provide a "waiver" which proves you already have insurance. As far as I know, students will not need to pay these insurance fees.. or at least until they figure out if they want to require it again.

The Past three years, students in my situation have been forced to pay for Insurance they did not want because it was a requirement to attend the college. I never wanted insurance, and for those who do want it, i find it unacceptable that ObamaCare is supposed to be the governments solution to insurance, yet it puts other providers at higher prices or out of business.

ObamaCare Needs to be stopped!

WHEN SEPTEMBER COMES

The world is swiftly moving to the dangerous place where nations won’t be able to do business with each other because they don’t trust the institutions that control wealth, which includes central banks, commercial banks, and governments. It will happen when the purveyors of international commodities, oil especially, refuse to accept the letters of credit issued by untrustworthy intermediaries. And when that dark moment arrives, nations will throw tantrums. The USA may be the loudest baby in the playpen.

The USA is veering into a psychological space not unlike the wilderness-of-mind that Germany found itself in back in the early 20th century: the deep woods of paranoia where our own failures will be projected onto the motives of others who mean to do us harm. Of course, even paranoiacs have enemies. There are quite a few others who would like to harm the USA, at least to bamboozle and paralyze us, to push back against our influence on their culture and economies. But the tendency here will be to magnify the supposed insults while ignoring our own suicidal behavior.

Drones And The Right To Privacy

On August 6th, the small town of Deer Trail, Colorado is set to vote on an ordinance that will permit the hunting of unmanned surveillance drones. The author of the ordinance, Phillip Steel, claims the gesture is “symbolic.” In an interview with a local ABC News affiliate, Steel attested that he does “not believe in the idea of a surveillance society.” The Florida Legislature recently passed a law barring federal government drones from “gathering evidence or other information” on citizens of the state. A handful of other American states are pursuing measures to limit the spying operations of Uncle Sam’s unmanned aerial vehicles.

The pushback against Washington’s snoop activities is a nice development. It’s unfortunate that these state laws and local ordinances will not amount to anything significant. The federal government is the divine master of what was once known as the individual states. Federalism – the idea that sovereignty is shared between hierarchical governing bodies under one umbrella of monopoly authority – is a long-dead concept of American lore. The states have been subservient to a national Leviathan since the War for Southern Independence. If the Constitution was supposed to balance the powers between state legislatures and Congress, it has been a miserable failure. Like pigs at the trough, the “laboratories of democracy” lined up to feed on an endless stream of Washington money that came with strings implicitly attached.

A vast security state is coming, and it will not be limited to the United States. The sock puppet governments around the globe will follow in tandem. New surveillance technology lowers the barrier of effort needed to soak the productive class of the surplus fruits of its labor. From monitoring backyards to ensure taxes are being paid on swimming pools to spying on farmers who violate agricultural regulations, states across the globe are already using new spy tools to extort more loot from the greater public.

DEA's "Cover Up Program" Revealed: More Troubling Than Pervasive NSA Surveillance?

Undated documents discovered by Reuters show [5] that federal agents are trained to "recreate" the investigative trail to effectively cover up where the information originated, a practice that some experts say violates a defendant's Constitutional right to a fair trial.

"I have never heard of anything like this at all," is one law professor's response to the fact that a secretive DEA unit is funneling wiretap, informant, and telephone database information to authorities across the nation in order to launch investigations of Americans (targeting common criminals, primarily drug dealers), "It is one thing to create special rules for national security, ordinary crime is entirely different. It sounds like they are phonying up investigations."

Agents are instructed to use "normal investigative techniques to recreate the information provided by [the secret DEA source]," and as the documents reveal - "remember that the utilization of [data] cannot be revealed or discussed in any investigative function."

Stunningly, after an arrest was made, agents then created a "parallel construction" to suggest the information secretly gathered was stumbled up during the course of the investigation - "It's just like laundering money - you work it backwards to make it clean." One recently retired federal gent noted, "It was an amazing tool; our big fear was that it wouldn't stay secret."

In Part 1 of this article I detailed the insane solutions proposed and executed since 2008 by our owners as they attempt to retain and further expand their ill-gotten wealth, acquired through fraud, deceit, swindles, and the brilliant manipulation and exploitation of the masses through Bernaysian propaganda techniques. Madness has engulfed the entire world, with a concentration of power in the hands of a few psychopathic financial elite wielding an inordinate and dangerous expanse of power over the lives of the common man. They are a modern day version of Al Capone, except their weapons of choice aren’t machine guns, but a printing press, peddling debt, creating derivatives of mass destruction, and peddling heaping doses of disinformation. The contemporary criminal class wears Hermes suits, Rolex watches and diamond studded pinky rings, drops $500 to dine at Masa in NYC, travels by chauffeured limo, lives in $10 million NYC penthouse suites, occupies luxurious corner offices in hundred story glass towers, and spends weekends hobnobbing with the other financial elite at their villas in the Hamptons. They have nothing but utter contempt for the lowly peasants who depend upon a weekly paycheck to make ends meet. Why work when you can steal $1 or $2 billion from farmers with no consequences?

The Popo are generating revenue

I was on Route 13 from North to South.

State Popo are pulling people over left and right on the North end.

City Popo are pulling people over left and right in city limits.

I saw 4 cars, each one had someone pulled over.

It seemed random, as the pulled the guy behind me over and I did not see where he did anything wrong.

Safe streets = big money!

DEA Agents Are Told To Cover Up Spying Program Used Against Americans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A secretive U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration unit is funneling information from intelligence intercepts, wiretaps, informants and a massive database of telephone records to authorities across the nation to help them launch criminal investigations of Americans.
Although these cases rarely involve national security issues, documents reviewed by Reuters show that law enforcement agents have been directed to conceal how such investigations truly begin - not only from defense lawyers but also sometimes from prosecutors and judges.

Welcome To Third World America: Camden, New Jersey’s Tent City

Those of you who didn’t sleep completely through American history class probably recall the phenomenon of Hoovervilles throughout the U.S. in the early years of the Great Depression. James Woods: Journalists Smell 'Blood In The Water' With Benghazi Scandal

Actor James Woods knows full well the media is in the tank for President Barack Obama.

The White House Down star also understands what a tipping point is, and why that might mean a great deal to even biased press outlets.

Cutting Annual Trade Deficit By $300 Billion Would Increase GDP, Create Jobs

Tuesday, the Commerce Department is expected to report the June deficit on international trade in goods and services was $43.0 billion. Overall, the deficit is up from $25 billion when the economic recovery began in mid-2009, and poses the most significant barrier to stronger economic growth.

Household spending has recovered, but too many of those dollars still go to pay for imported oil and consumer goods from China and cars from Japan. In the second quarter, gross domestic product (GDP) growth was a paltry 1.7 percent — consumer spending contributed 1.2 percentage points. However, the increase in the trade deficit subtracted 0.8 percentage points — the growth in imports from Asia and oil negated two-thirds of the increase in consumer spending.
