A Letter To The Editor: Mandatory Student Health Insurance

Joe,

When I first started school at UMES back in 2009, insurance was not necessary. The only thing the university cared about is if you had all your shots, meningitis shots, etc. All of a sudden one year, we had to start paying for Student Health Insurance or show proof we had insurance elsewhere. I disputed this with the school with out success.

UMES had stated that they required insurance for any student enrolled, even if your not living on campus. A $50 fee every semester was tacked on to everyone's tuition and fees who didnt have insurance. The FAFSA federal aid doesnt cover it, your scholarships cannot cover it, it must be paid out of the students pocket.

Recently I get this post card in the mail stating that they will no longer be "providing", (what I call forcing), insurance because of OBAMACARE. Not only are they suspending that but you don't have to provide a "waiver" which proves you already have insurance. As far as I know, students will not need to pay these insurance fees.. or at least until they figure out if they want to require it again.

The Past three years, students in my situation have been forced to pay for Insurance they did not want because it was a requirement to attend the college. I never wanted insurance, and for those who do want it, i find it unacceptable that ObamaCare is supposed to be the governments solution to insurance, yet it puts other providers at higher prices or out of business.

ObamaCare Needs to be stopped!

  1. You you just want to go along without any insurance? What happens if you have an accident (college students do have accidents), your going to stick the hospital and/or emergency room? Looking for someone else to bail you out of your financial obligations?
    Grow up and stop playing the victim.

  3. 10:55 Really, 40 years ago you just paid for your own health care, before the government got involved with it a forced all of its mandates, then the lawyers got involved with malpractice suits which the government refuses to stop. health insurance began when the government decided to impose wage restrictions on employers so in order to attract better employees they began offering health insurance (i believe it was IBM) so now we have come to the point that people think you must have it and guess who now controls it. yes my children go to University of Maryland and they too were given a choice either proove you have insurance or pay $1,400 per semester. so you grow up and stop telling me what i have to do. i don't want to have insurance much less be forced to have it. ill pay my own bills thank you. you can have your Government regulations

  4. 12:05 How in the world are you going to pay your own way for any medical needs when you are complaining about the cost of insurance?

  5. Did you know the State of Maryland has been subsidizing health insurance for at least three years?

    I run a small business with two family members and three other employees. I told the agent that I make $12,000 per year, my son gets $10,000 and the employees get $7,500 each. It's an open secret that nobody ever checks the real numbers. The result? . . . The State of Maryland (that means YOU) pay over 90% of my, and my employees, health insurance premiums. Suck it up, suckers, it's going to get better for me and worse for you. Aren't you glad you voted for Obama and O'Malley?

  6. 12:05 & the OP;

    If you don't like it, go somewhere else!

    UMES is a dump anyways!

    Also I would love to know the steps you took in "disputing" this with UMES and who exactly it was that laughed you out the door.

    I don't know what it is that makes people think they are so dang entitled.

    One more thing, what the heck is FAFSA? Lol... potatoe.

  7. Most colleges require that you have health insurance. Can't children stay on their parents coverage till they are 27 anyways? Must be nice, that's why there are so many losers out there
