Joe Flacco Donating $25k To Memorial Fund In Honor Of Towson Student

ABC2 has confirmed Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco is partnering with Dairy Queen to make a donation to the Matthew J. Cheswick Memorial Fund. Cheswick, a Towson University student, was killed in a hit and run accident last year in Ocean City.

The donation of $25,000 will be made during an upcoming special event. We're told the donation was Flacco's idea, with the quarterback touched by Cheswick's story. Matthew, who was 22 when he died, was a die-hard Ravens fan who often attended games with his father and brother. A banner baring Matthew's nickname "Cheese" hangs in the stands at M & T Bank Stadium during games.

The Three Keys To Saving Western Civilization

Although never one to indulge in controversy, I’d like to offer my humble opinion on three solutions that would lead these United States back from the edge of abyss of total fiscal and societal collapse and into a future of self-responsibility , freedom and prosperity for the individual, family and nation.

Whilst these solutions are undoable due to a diverse mass of ignorant, self-serving voting blocks, they are nevertheless viable solutions to keeping the lid on a melting pot that’s quickly turning int a boiling cauldron of regional tribal interests that in time will inevitable come to blows over scarcity of resources.

This inevitable slide into tribalism masquerading as multiculturalism( or, the farce of the melting pot , if you will) has been unnaturally exacerbated by a central command and control government that’s largely been captured by rent seeking global corporations via cheap labor subsidized buy US taxpayers.

Currently, the fascist putsch is on to flood North America with millions more of uneducated and culturally feral third worlders who will change the political and socioeconomic moorings of these United States forever.Bet on it.

New Union Contracts Feature Annual Salary Increases

OCEAN CITY – On Monday night, the Mayor and City Council came before a room crowded with members of Ocean City’s two unions to sign and ratify the long awaited collective bargaining agreements, which outlined a series of salary increases.

City Manager David Recor first introduced the resolution to ratify the collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 4269 as well as lead negotiator John Gilman of Miles & Stockbridge P.C.

“I want to acknowledge the municipal employees who assisted in the negotiations, and commend you for having wonderful employees who are very willing to help and go above and beyond in effort and time spent assisting me … and also commend the leadership of the respective departments of police and fire, and that they have a command of what they are doing on a daily basis, as well as their employees best interest,” Gilman said. “I am pleased to report to that the town and the IAFF union has agreed to a collective bargaining agreement that provides the city and union labor peace for three years starting July 1, 2013 running through June 30, 2016.”

USA Today Founder Neuharth Dies In Florida At 89

COCOA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Critics dubbed USA Today "McPaper" when it debuted in 1982, and they accused its founder, Al Neuharth, of dumbing down American journalism with its easy-to-read articles and bright graphics.

Neuharth had the last laugh when USA Today became the nation's most-circulated newspaper in the late 1990s.

The hard-charging founder of USA Today died Friday in Cocoa Beach, Fla. He was 89. The news was announced by USA Today and by the Newseum, which he also founded.

QUOTE OF THE DAY 4-19-13

“I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me…If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

How Does This End?

When Suckers Finally Realize
The fleecing of the American public continues.
The theft takes different forms, but it all serves one purpose — to transfer wealth from the average Joe to the crony corporatists and their political lackeys. Here are but a few examples of how this has been accomplished:
  • Bailouts for the wealthy and well-connected are paid for by the unconnected middle class.
  • Subsidies are provided for unworkable schemes submitted by political donors and favorites. These schemes inevitably fail and the tax-payer is left holding an empty bag.
  • Laws are routinely ignored when “friends” need help. In identical circumstances, would you receive the same treatment as Jon Corzine?
  • Despite the biggest theft in world history, no one was prosecuted. The Savings and Loan crisis in the 1980s was trivial in comparison to the recent financial crisis. More than a thousand S&L executives were prosecuted.
  • Ever-increasing sacrifices in the form of higher taxes from the productive sector are demanded to continue the plush living of the ruling class.
Capitalism and free markets depend upon trust, integrity, property rights and the rule of law. Without these, there are no advantages to free markets. Nor are there any incentives to create wealth. Instead, an economy becomes little more than a massive plunder scheme where the powerful exploit the weak. No economic recovery is possible under such circumstances.

‘XX’-YEAR-OLD GEORGE SOROS DIES…ACCORDING TO A BUNGLED REUTERS OBITUARY

Reuters accidentally published on Thursday a prepared obituary for George Soros, billionaire philanthropist and legendary liberal bankroller.

“George Soros, enigmatic financier, liberal philanthropist dies at XX,” the article’s headline reads.

“George Soros, who died XXX at age XXX, was a predatory and hugely successful financier and investor, who argued paradoxically for years against the same sort of free-wheeling capitalism that made him billions,” it adds.

WICOMICO COUNTY FIRE MARSHAL PARTNERS WITH USFA TO KICK OFF NEW FIRE SAFETY CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE AGES 50 AND OLDER

Community wide Effort to Lower Escalating Fire Death Rates Among Older Population from Careless Smoking, Cooking and Heating

Salisbury, MD,
The Wicomico County Fire Marshal today launched A Fire Safety Campaign for People 50-Plus to prevent the community’s older citizens from joining fire death statistics that escalate dramatically beginning at age 65. Fire Marshal Kevin Wright, is conducting the campaign in partnership with the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Management Agency (FEMA). This morning’s presentation was made to the residents of Pine Bluff Apartments.

Each year, approximately 1,100 Americans ages 65 and older die in home fires and another 3,000 are injured. People ages 65 and older are three times as likely to die in a residential fire as the rest of the population. Careless smoking, cooking and heating practices are the top three causes of fire deaths among people age 65 and older.

“We will teach people simple steps for safe smoking, cooking and heating their homes – steps that will help them avoid unspeakable tragedy,” said Kevin Wright, Wicomico County Fire Marshal. “We will also encourage our older citizens to maintain their smoke alarms, develop and practice a fire escape plan, and if at all possible, install home fire sprinklers.” Wright also noted that the campaign reaches out to the 65-plus population and to people ages 50 and older who often care for and will soon enter this high risk group.

In Maryland, people ages 65 and older made up 28 percent of residential fire deaths from 1989 to 1998 according to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

“We welcome invitations from community and faith-based organizations to present fire safety programs for people ages 50 and older, their families and caregivers,” said Wright. “We will also make home visits to point out fire hazards, help plan escape routes and provide fire safety materials.”

Contact Kevin Wright at 410-548-4994 to schedule a fire safety presentation or request a home visit. A Fire Safety Campaign for People 50-Plus campaign materials are available through the Fire Marshals’ office or via the web at www.usfa.fema.gov/50Plus.

Outdoor Reading Garden Created At Berlin Head Start

BERLIN -- Just in time for spring, students from Salisbury University’s Social Work program have created an outdoor reading garden at Berlin Head Start.

“We thought the children may be more encouraged to read if they were not stuck inside the classroom all day,” said Salisbury University (SU) student Amber Wallace.

Along with fellow students Brittany Faulk and Venessa Owens, and as part of their Macro Community requirements, Wallace’s group decided to focus on a project that would benefit young children.

“My group decided to focus on my internship because I work with small children,” said Wallace, who interns with the Worcester County Health Department’s Early Intervention program.

Real Estate Political Correctness: ‘Master Bedroom’ Becomes ‘Owner’s Suite’

Anyone can own a house. Why, women are even allowed to own property all by ourselves now! That’s why we suppose it’s good that The word “master,” with its connotations of slaveholding and maleness, is slowly fading from its intended use in the residential real estate business.

The term means a bedroom with bathroom attached and enough closet space for two people, a room intended for the couple who are at the head of a household. The Washington Business Journal notes that at least one architect stopped using the M word back in the ’90s, and the new usage has spread among home builders.

A Criminologist Questions Sandy Hook

Who in their right mind would even thinkof questioning accounts of politically momentous events (such as Sandy Hook) proffered by various MSM outlets?

Well, at this point, many will agree that the MSM has dropped even the merest pretense of objectivity; MSM journalism has been fundamentally transformed into sheer advocacy.

Here, we are going to do something the MSM won't: provide context for the Sandy Hook event by conducting a statistical analysis of hard data on 30 years' worth of mass public shootings in the United States.

Minnesota Hospital Apologizes For Misplacing Body Of Stillborn Infant In The Laundry

A Minnesota hospital has the weighty task today of explaining, and subsequently apologizing, as to how the body of a stillborn infant went missing from the morgue, only to show up at a laundry service miles away. Officials say they still have questions about the sequence of events that led to the unfortunate handling and discovery of the body.

Hospital officials say the baby boy was born stillborn at 22 weeks of development on April 4, and was wrapped in linens at the morgue.

From there, someone accidentally sent the sheets off to the laundry service to be cleaned, apparently unaware that the baby’s body was included, reports the Associated Press. The hospital says it’s been trying to get in touch with the family of the infant.

IRS Employees Charged With Stealing

Two dozen current and former IRS employees have been charged with stealing government benefits and property. Federal prosecutors in Memphis say 13 of them received more than $250,000 in benefits illegally. Benefits included unemployment payments, food stamps and housing vouchers. Prosecutors said they lied about their employment status. If convicted, they face five years in prison. The other 11 were indicted for theft of government property. They could face longer sentences.

US Unemployment Aid Applications Rise To 352K

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits increased just 4,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 352,000. The slight gain kept applications at a level consistent with solid hiring and suggests March's sluggish hiring may be temporary.

The Labor Department report released Thursday also noted that the four-week average, a less volatile measure, rose only 2,750 to 361,250. Because the four-week average changes less than the weekly number, many economists say it better captures the pace of layoffs.

Applications are a proxy for layoffs. They jumped three weeks ago to a four-month high, but then plummeted the next week. The sharp fluctuations reflected volatility around the Easter holiday, department officials said. Overall, applications have declined slightly since January.

When former General Services Administration head Martha Johnson lost her job last year, she put pen to paper. Johnson has self-published a book. It's about homophobia and the Presbyterian church in rural Indiana in the 1990s. It's called "In our midst." Johnson has also published a book on youth worship. She resigned from GSA last year after the Las Vegas conference scandal.

Coast Guard Highlights The Problems With Making "False Calls"

The coast guard station here at Curtis Bay handles hundreds of calls each year, but not all of them are real, including one they got Wednesday night. False calls don’t just impact the Coast Guard, those calls impact other resources, and that literally costs all those involved, “The cost rise quickly. It was a search last summer that cost more than $70,000 for something we believe was a false call.”

Making these false May Days are also a risk for the caller. It is a felony. One man caught and convicted in North Carolina was sentenced to one year and a day and ordered to pay almost a quarter of a million dollars in restitution to cover the cost of the false call.

Republicans Trying To Protect Public Safety And Law Enforcement Workers From Furloughs

The furlough season has begun. Gov Exec reports that some Labor Department employees are taking days off this week without pay. Staff at the EPA and the Office of Management and Budget are slated to begin furloughs Monday. Meanwhile, Senate Republicans have introduced a bill that would protect public safety and law enforcement workers from furloughs. The bill would let agency leaders move money around in their budgets so that the so-called "essential employees" would not have to take days off from work without pay. Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo) says essential employees includes food inspectors, control-tower operators and border guards.

The Silent Epidemic In A Broken, Deranged System: Stress

Longtime readers know that I see our system not just as financially sick but as spiritually and psychologically deranging. The illnesses are related, of course--a distorted economic system (i.e. financialization) that rewards parasitic sociopathy and political predation cannot help but make its participants physically and psychologically ill.

Here is a selection of the many entries I've written on this largely ignored topic:

Serial Addictions, Serial Speculative Bubbles: a Sickness Unto Death  (Feb. 2, 2010)

Welfare Nation: Addiction, Denial and Magical Thinking  (February 1, 2010)

The Wider Context for Twenty-Somethings (Gen Y) in America  (February 19, 2010)

Opting Out and the Culture of Entitlement  (March 29, 2010)

Readers are often puzzled by the term The Politics of Experience, which is the core of the Survival+ analysis. The term comes from psychiatrist/author R.D. Laing, and I use it to describe the subtle ways that our worldview is molded to make certain forms of political and financial dominance so "natural" that we lose awareness of its arbitrary, carefully engineered structure.

Attorneys General Team Up With Facebook To Protect Privacy

Led by Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler, the National Association of Attorney Generals (NAAG) has teamed up with Facebook to improve social media security with the launch of a new consumer education program.

Issues of social media privacy were featured at a NAAG cybersecurity summit this week, alongside the topics of financial hacking and government infrastructure.

“Just as we must address bullying, harmful content and other dangers in our schools and in our neighborhoods, we must address them online,” said Gansler, president of NAAG, on April 15 during the introduction of the summit.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY NAMES JOHN R. GRIFFIN AS CHIEF OF STAFF

Deputy Secretary Joseph P. Gill to Fill Role as DNR Secretary

ANNAPOLIS, MD
- Governor Martin O’Malley named John R. Griffin as his Chief of Staff. A veteran public servant with more than 25 years of experience in Maryland state government, Griffin has led the Administration’s efforts in developing Maryland’s landmark conservation, restoration and stewardship programs including BayStat, GreenPrint, the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund, the Genuine Progress Indicator and the nationally acclaimed Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature.

“For four decades, in both the public and private arena, John has worked tirelessly, passionately and wholeheartedly to serve the citizens of Maryland,” said Governor O’Malley. “For the past six years he has been at the heart and soul of Maryland’s environmental agenda, lending his wisdom and expertise to the progress we have made in protecting and restoring our land, water, fish and crabs. His solid judgment and knowledge of state government will allow us to continue the progress we have made creating jobs, expanding opportunity, and securing a better future for Maryland’s families.”

“I am truly honored by Governor O’Malley’s confidence in me and am looking forward to working with him, his talented staff and cabinet in this new role,” said Griffin. “Matt Gallagher has set a high standard for me to follow, and I am excited for this opportunity to assist in building upon the significant accomplishments of the O’Malley-Brown Administration.

Under Griffin’s leadership as secretary of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Maryland has enacted bold management plans to rebuild the State’s iconic crab and oyster populations. Griffin is well known throughout Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay region as a consensus builder. Griffin spent five years as a senior policy advisor to Governor Harry Hughes. He later served as DNR secretary from 1995 to 1999 after spending 11 years as DNR’s deputy secretary. Griffin’s experience also includes five years as general manager of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

Joseph P. Gill, presently DNR’s deputy secretary, will take Griffin’s place as secretary. Gill was named DNR’s deputy secretary in 2010 after serving as the agency’s chief counsel for 14 years. Gill has played a key role in many of the agency’s most significant programs and policies, from development of the Rural Legacy Program to driving development of a more aggressive penalty system for natural resources violators.

Griffin will fill the role left by Matt Gallagher who is leaving the Administration to become president and chief executive officer of the Goldseker Foundation. Gallagher has spent the last four years as chief of staff, overseeing day-to-day operations of the Governor’s Office and 18 cabinet agencies. Gallagher had previously served as deputy chief of staff. Prior to joining state government, Gallagher served as then-Mayor Martin O’Malley’s director of Citistat, the acclaimed performance measurement program that has been replicated nationally and internationally.

“I would like to thank Matt for his years of dedicated service to the citizens of Baltimore and Maryland,” said Governor O’Malley. “His innovative leadership has been instrumental in helping achieve many of our most significant gains over the past decade. Matt is one of the most competent and able administrators that I have ever had the pleasure to work with. While his departure will be felt far beyond the second floor of the State House, I am excited Matt will remain engaged in such important work through his new role at the Goldseker Foundation.”

Md. Transportation Authority Announces Enhanced Safety Measures For Bay Bridge

BALTIMORE — The Maryland Transportation Authority on Thursday announced plans to install added safety measures for two-way traffic operations on the Bay Bridge based on a study the agency made last year.

Crews are scheduled to remove and replace rumble strips and pavement markings and add new signs starting as soon as Friday to provide additional visual and physical guides to help drivers stay alert and in their lanes during two-way operations.

The authority implements two-way traffic operations when eastbound traffic is heavy. It reverses the left lane of the westbound span for use by eastbound motorists. Crews will put down a painted buffer between the westbound left lane and center lane with continuous double yellow lines, rumble strips and a solid white line along the 4.3-mile span, the authority said.

Congress Challenges New Court House Proposals

Congress is taking judges and the General Services Administration to task for proposals to build more federal courthouses. A new Government Accountability Office report questions 10 out of 12 planned construction projects. Auditors say there should be a moratorium until the judiciary puts the plans through a rigorous evaluation process. The judiciary says the construction will cost $1 billion. GAO said that's not true. With future rent, the cost will be at least three times that amount. House Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) suggests fancy courthouses aren't necessary. He says administering justice could be done in a warehouse with two milk crates and a two-by-four.

Troopers Remind Public To Be On Alert For Phone Scams

Location: Residences in Sussex County

Georgetown
– Delaware State Police Financial Crimes detectives are reminding the public to be on alert for phone scams that have been targeting the elderly recently.

Detectives are investigating several cases where elderly residents of Sussex County have received calls from someone purporting to be a grandson, claiming to be in Mexico and in need of money. The caller often claims the money is needed for bail, due to a car accident, or to purchase an airline ticket to leave the country. The caller usually says that he is too embarrassed to call his parents.

Several victims have wired money to Mexico, only to realize that their grandson was never in that country. These victims have suffered substantial financial losses, often wiring thousands of dollars at a time.

Detectives remind anyone receiving a call asking for money to follow these tips:
Verify that whoever you think is asking for money is actually abroad. Call the parents or another relative. Most victims later realize their relative was never traveling.
Ask the caller questions that only your relative would know.
Obtain a phone number at which you can call back the caller.
If you feel you must pay for something abroad, attempt to do it with a credit card, instead of wiring the money. This makes it easier to identify the recipient and rescind payment.
If you are skeptical about the caller, talk to a neighbor or friend about the call before sending any money.

In these scams, it is very common for the victim who has sent money to receive continuing calls, asking for more money. Anyone who believes they have been a victim should be very cautious about sending any more money, and contact the police.

Thank God Its Friday 4-19-13

MD GOP Cracks Down On Bloggers

Michael Dresser of The Baltimore Sun (who is greatly missed from his days as a transit/transportation writer for them before he went to the government beat) writes about new rules from the Maryland Republican Party related to media credentials (which I’ve excerpted at the bottom of this post.)

There are several questionable things in there, but the thing that stood out to me, besides Dresser’s headline, was the credentialing rules as they relate to bloggers.

Basically, the rules show laziness by letting other credentialing bodies do all the work. Additionally, there seems to be an attempt to shut out bloggers.

This is still 2013 right? I recently attended CPAC 2013 as a blogger and I was seated in the same media area as all of the traditional media and had a pass that said Media. Values Voter Summit has had bloggers in with traditional media for years also. In addition to that, many of the Republican primary events and other election events had bloggers and media using the same credential and being in the same area.

Some of the best coverage of the MD GOP’s foibles recently have been from bloggers like Jackie Wellfonder, Joe Steffen,Richard Cross, Red Maryland, Jim Jamitis, and others. I even blogged about one of their screwups. This would appear to be a pathetic attempt to reign in those bloggers. It won’t work and the current MD GOP leadership now has egg on their faces.
