There is More Than One Way to Eat an Elephant

I graduated from Hollywood High School in 1980, and during my time their I took a Marine Biology Class that I found absolutely fascinating. Credit must be given to my teacher however, his humor and down to earth realism made arthropods and sephalopods extremely interesting. He was also the head of the Ski Club, and most of his students became very close to him and many have stayed in contact with him over the years. I am one who has kept in touch. He has a pretty warped sense of humor not unlike my own, and lives quite a colorful life. He keeps a journal of his life as a caretaker of a huge ranch in Northern California, and sends out the latest entries to all who care to read it. In today's entry he included this story about a friend of his in Arizona. Below is his story:

I have a friend who is president of his homeowner's association down in
Arizona. They were having a terrible problem with trash on the side of the
road that is around his association's homes The reason, according to my
friend, is there is being built just next to them, six new homes.....big
ones! He said the trash (McDonalds and Burger King bags, etc) was coming
from the Mexican work crews working at the construction sites. . He
pleaded with the site supervisors and the general contractor to no avail,
called the City, County, and the Police and got no help.

So, the association decided to take matters into their own hands.
They organized about twenty folks and named themselves The "Inner
Neighborhood Services." They went out at lunch time and "policed" the
Trash themselves. It is what they did while picking up the trash that is
Hilarious!

They got some navy blue baseball caps and had the initials "INS" put on
the caps in gold lettering. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, however, to
understand what they hoped people would think it means.

Well, after their first day of pick-up detail, with them wearing their caps
and some carrying cameras; 46 out of 68, of the construction workers
did not show up for work the next morning! It¹s now been ten days and
They haven't come back yet!

Now the General Contractor, I understand is madder than hell, but can't
say anything publicly, because he could be busted for hiring "illegal
aliens". Wallace and his bunch can't be accused of impersonating INS
folks, because they have it on their home owner association records the
vote to form the new committee within their association ‹ plus they
informed the INS about what they were doing in advance, and according to
Wallace, the INS basically said .... "Have at it"!
