Social Security pays millions to people VA says are dead

The Department of Veterans Affairs knew they were dead, but the Social Security Administration kept paying benefits to hundreds of people anyway, according to a new agency audit released Friday that says at least $37 million in bogus payments were made.

Investigators compared the VA’s record to Social Security rolls and found nearly 4,000 people who were listed as dead by the VA, but were still getting checks. Some of those people listed as dead were in fact still alive, but others were deceased — and their checks never should have been paid, the Social Security inspector general said.

Among the dead veterans was one who died in August 2008 but continued to get checks until March of this year, when the inspector general got a report from the State Department showing he had died abroad, in Thailand. Social Security paid out $160,000 in bogus payments in that case.

A Few Hurrican Tricks In Case You Need Them

A few hurricane tricks for those who may need it:
1. Start running your ice makers now and bagging the ice in freezer bags. Fill as much space in between your freezer items as you can.
2. Freeze regular tap water for pets, cleaning or drinking in tupperware-type containers. REMEMBER to leave a small bit of space between the top of the water & the lids so the ice expands but doesn't crack the container.
3. Start using up your perishables to make more room for ice in the freezer.
4. Fill up all vehicles & check tires & oil. Fill up any gas containers you may have.
5. Cash from ATM, at least enough to get you through tolls and gas out of town. Call your bank if you plan on leaving the state so they don't freeze your card for out-of-area "suspicious" transactions.
6. All important docs screenshot & send to your email. Take originals in sealed bags or plastic bins.
7. Pet & livestock food & supplies. Vet records in case you need to shelter then at a storm-safe facility.
8. Evacuation plans and share with family members so they know where you're headed.
9. Consider putting heirlooms & photos in plastic bins in a high place, second floor, or safe room if you don't plan on taking them with you.
10. SECURE ALL FIREARMS & AMMUNITION PROPERLY.
11. Old rags & beach towels on your windowsills. Even with the best windows & shutters, water seeping from the wind pressure happens. A few damp towels is better than soaked drywall or floors!
12. Shutter windows and doors and bring everything outside into your garage or house NOW. Do not wait until the day before. Better to get done early and relax than wait until its too late, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE MANDATORY PERSONNEL (hospital employee or first responder).
13. If you don't already have your hurricane supplies, you might want to get them now. Shelves are already empty in most places.
14. Stock up on dry goods, bottles of water.
15. If you have a grill, stock up on propane.
16. Fill your tubs with water to flush your toilets with.
17. Lower your pool water to prevent flooding from that.

What Will Stabilize Used Vehicle Sales? (Hint: Nothing Good)

Until this point, a lot of what I've shared with you is theoretically based on my knowledge and experience of used vehicle values and how I believe they affect new vehicle sales velocity. Today, I am going to share some some hard data that I've been researching with a great deal of effort.

I genuinely believe that used vehicle values have a very significant effect on new vehicle sales velocity. I have explained it on Twitterand on a previous blog post through the concept of trade cycles. Because of this, I am certain that used vehicle values can be used as a leading indicator for inventory management at the manufacturing level, at the retail dealer level and certainly as an investment tool. However, I humbly hold that current used vehicle value indexes sources are not good enough.

There is a very specific group of vehicles that can be monitored in order to better project results. The Manheim and NADA index both have too much noise in the data. For example, the Manheim Index has no model year restrictions and includes new vehicle price inflation in the calculations. NADA goes up to 8 model years. Both average the data over multiple months and include vehicles which, in my opinion, have little to no impact on new vehicle sales velocity. Therefore, I have decided to make my own index.

For now, I'm going to use Ford as an example please ignore the red residual line until later.

How the Obama Administration Bypassed Congress to Grant De Facto Amnesty to Young Illegals

Amid the hysterical criticism of President Trump’s decision to review government protections for young illegal immigrants, it is instructive to recall how the Obama administration bypassed Congress and usurped legislative powers to implement the controversial policy of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, in the first place.

In considering the fate of DACA for so-called DREAMers, Trump is not reviewing longtime U.S. immigration law, but rather a series of policies enacted by interagency memos after Congress repeatedly refused to pass the so-called DREAM Act to grant residency and rights to young illegals.

Maryland State Police Labor Day Weekend Enforcement Efforts

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Traffic enforcement efforts by Maryland state troopers during the Labor Day holiday period resulted in more than 6,900 traffic stops that led to 187 arrests, more than 90 of which included impaired drivers.

During that period, troopers arrested 93 impaired drivers, arrested 58 for criminal offenses and arrested another 36 people who were found to be wanted on warrants.

The arrests occurred during 6,982 traffic stops made by troopers working traffic safety initiatives that included additional patrols, sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, and speed enforcement. Troopers issued 4,667 citations, 4,728 warnings and 647 safety equipment repair orders. Troopers at each of the 23 Maryland State Police barracks were involved in special enforcement operations during the holiday period.

The Rise Of The Deep State: How They Got Their Power To Manipulate For Ultimate Control

While many in the United States firmly believe that the government just isn’t working, it is. But it’s only working for the powerful and rich elites in the government and the media who have a desire to cling to their oppressive control of others and the money many are willing to allow them to steal

The fight has never been between the republicans and the democrats.

As Americans choose sides, their rights and freedoms are sold to the highest bidder. According to Intellectual Takeout, the fight is between “us” and the deep state; not those on the right and those on the left. More and more often we are seeing bureaucrats, lobbyists, and elected officials of both parties circle the wagons in an effort to prevent any true reforms of the government. They constantly write laws they exclude themselves from, come up with inventive ways to tax us to our breaking point and destroy the healthcare system. And this is all by design.

Trump Has Decided To End DACA, "Igniting A Political Firestorm"

On Friday, the White House announced that Trump would make his decision whether to end the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), or "Dreamer, program on Tuesday. Well, we won't have to wait to long, because according to Politico, Trump has made the decision to end the DAVA program with a six-month delay.

Trump, who has faced strong warnings from both Democrats and Republicans not to scrap the program and struggled with his own misgivings about targeting minors for deportation, is said to have made up his mind and according to Politico, "senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises."

Trump will announce his decision on Tuesday, with Politico noting that the White House informed House Speaker Paul Ryan of the president’s decision on Sunday morning. Ryan had said during a radio interview on Friday that he didn’t think the president should terminate DACA, and that Congress should act on the issue. However, Trump's conversations with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who argued that Congress rather than the executive branch is responsible for writing immigration law, helped persuade the president to terminate the program, although Politico hedges that "the White House aides caution that — as with everything in the Trump White House — nothing is set in stone until an official announcement has been made."

In what appears to be another victory for the recently exiled "nationalist" wing of the Trump inner circle, the president’s expected announcement is likely to shore up his base, which rallied behind his broader campaign message about the importance of enforcing the country’s immigration laws and securing the border. At the same time, the president’s decision is likely to be one of the most contentious of his early administration, opposed by leaders of both parties and by the political establishment more broadly. It also indicates that despite his departure, Steve Bannon still continues to have major influence on the Trump White House.

Report highlights farm manure pollution in four PA counties

With Pennsylvania lagging badly in helping to clean up the Chesapeake Bay, a new report by an environmental group highlights the role that intensive livestock farming plays in the state’s shortcoming.

Four south-central Pennsylvania counties where animal manure is heavily used to fertilize crops “contribute disproportionately” to the nitrogen and phosphorus pollution fouling local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay, according to the report by the Environmental Integrity Project.

The Washington, D.C.-based group calculates that farmers in Lancaster, Lebanon, Franklin and Union counties apply up to four to five times as much manure per acre as growers do in other Pennsylvania counties. Drawing on data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Chesapeake Bay Program, the EIP estimates that about 18 percent of the nitrogen and phosphorus in that manure runs off into local waterways.

Frog Logs Give Frogs And Other Creatures A Way Out Of The Pool

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — It’s easy for frogs to get into swimming pools, but getting them out can be a little more complicated.

Just ask Jeff and Lisa Robertson.

“We didn’t have frogs for the first four or five years, and then in just one year, they exploded,” Jeff Robertson said. “We had almost 60 frogs one day, 30 dead and 29 still swimming around.”

When their friend Rich Mason heard about it, the wildlife biologist decided to help.

“If you’re an animal lover and you have a pool, it’s a tough thing to watch things die in your pool,” Mason said.

Mason has designed a device he calls “The Frog Log.”

Left-Wing Outlets Spread False Story Claiming GOP Official Turned Down Disaster Aid

A number of left-wing outlets spread a false story claiming Texas Republican Secretary of State Rolando Pablos turned down aid in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, and instead requested prayers.

The story appears to have spread from one sentence in an article from Canada's CBC News. The story referenced an offer from the Canadian province of Quebec to send Texas "equipment and crews to help restore power and to provide blankets, beds, pillows and hygienic products."

"Pablos declined the aid for now, instead asking for ‘prayers from the people of Quebec,'" the article quotes Quebec's International Relations Minister Christine St-Pierre to have said. "He was very touched by the fact we called him."

The story was subsequently picked up by atheist bloggers, such as Patheos' "Friendly Atheist" Hemant Mehta. "Take the help, Texas. If God could help, He would’ve blown the hurricane away before it hit land," Mehta mocked.

Why McDonald’s Coke Tastes Better

Many Coca-Cola lovers have long said that getting their favorite beverage at McDonald’s is better than getting it at the store or gas station. It simply tastes better and is more satisfying than bottled soda, or even fountain Coke from another restaurant.

It may seem like our taste buds are just playing tricks, but McDonald’s has finally revealed information that seems to confirm why Coke may, in fact, taste better at McD’s.

Last year, the fast food chain answered the simple question, “Why does the Coca-Cola taste so good at McDonald’s?” on the FAQ section of their website, thereby giving Coca-Cola-loving internet users the ability to say, “Told you so!”

“There are many reasons the Coca-Cola tastes so great at McDonald’s,” the company writes on their website. “We simply follow the guidelines set by Coca-Cola and take steps to ensure it tastes the same as when you buy it in a bottle.”

But it’s not the same. It’s different, better, magical even.

Dead? You Can Still Get Social Security – These People Did

Close to 4,000 people whom the U.S. Veterans Administration thought had died received Social Security checks, an audit has found.

But some of the “dead” people weren’t dead. And some were.

At least 19 percent of the 3,925 beneficiaries studied got government checks sent to them even though they were no longer with us, according to the U.S. Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General, which issued a report this week.

That amounts to an estimated $37.7 million to 746 people who had died — and another $7.3 million during the next 12 months if federal officials don’t fix the problem.

Police: Hole in bag helps nab burglar who targeted J.C. Penney, Lord & Taylor

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (ABC7) — A series of virtual and physical clues led to the capture of a burglar accused of fleecing more than $300,000 from two area department stores.

The high-stakes burglaries, which happened in May 2016 and February 2017, occurred at the Westfield Wheaton Mall J.C. Penney and the White Flint Mall Lord & Taylor, respectively. Both break-ins occurred under cover of darkness, while the stores were closed for business.

Police have since charged Assaloun Luangsay, 35, of Silver Spring, with two counts of second-degree burglary and two counts of theft more than $100,000.

It was 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2016. The general manager of the Wheaton J.C. Penney arrived to find his store had fallen victim to a burglar. A public entrance and multiple jewelry display cases were broken with glass strewn about. Around $153,000 in merchandise was unaccounted for.

When Catholic Statues Attack

A Catholic school is removing its Catholic statues to be more inclusive. While this sounds like another action in the continued debate over controversial monuments, this is more a trend of religions, especially Catholics, hiding their beliefs, or watering them down enough so as not to be a bother.

It reminds me of a time I toured Georgetown University with my daughter on a fine spring day years ago. She had been accepted for the fall and we were checking out the campus.

When most of the tours and talks were over, I walked toward the common area, and the smell was overwhelmingly delicious.

Thick burgers on the grill.

It was a Friday during Lent, the only time when Catholics are supposed to abstain from eating meat on Fridays. Georgetown is a Catholic school. Yet the Grill Club was allowed (encouraged?) to take over the common and serve up forbidden fruit.

Worst Box Office In 25 Years: Hollywood’s Problems Are Permanent & Deep

Even before this catastrophic Labor Day weekend is factored in (more on this below), the domestic 2017 box office is in hideous shape. This year is –6.3% behind 2016 and continues to fall behind 2015, 2013, and 2012.

If you figure in inflation, those numbers are even worse. For example, in 2012 the average ticket cost $7.96. Today it is almost a full dollar more at $8.89. Yeah, things are that bad and will look even worse on Tuesday.

With no apparent faith in their own product, this is the first Labor Day in 25 years where a new title has not been released on more than 1,000 screens. Over this weekend last year, the box office hauled in nearly $130 million. This year will do about a third of that.

Another Rape In Salisbury Last Week, Local Media Remains Silent

Everyone should take a good hard look at the numbers above. SIX motor vehicle thefts, two arrests for prostitution, seventeen assaults, four robberies, nine fraud/embezzlement charges recently, the list goes on and on.

Hey Salisbury, "IT'S HAPPENING". Crime, that is.

POLITICAL PARTIES AMERICA’S DOWNFALL?

George Washington knew it. So did John Adams. Political parties would be the downfall of our republic. The partisanship would interfere with proper use and administration of the Constitution and the willfulness of the parties would work against the country. We’re seeing it now. Let’s reflect.

Starting with North Korea, imagine if when Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative was proposed, and given real thought, not knee-jerk partisan puffery, we’d likely not have an issue with North Korea, or Iran, or Pakistan, etc. Why? Because with our technological advantage we’d have developed something that would have disincentivized nations from striving toward ICBMs that we by now would have the ability to target and shoot down.

Then speaker of the house, Tip O’Neill (D) Massachusetts, immediately began saying Reagan was the “stupidest” person to occupy the seat of the president. (Sound like a variation on a current theme?) Yet, the dunce hat has to go to O’Neill and his fellow Democrats in congress for not authorizing the research needed to better protect our country from ICBMs, a Constitutional responsibility.

Democrats were the problem here. But Republicans have also had their share of making America less great simply because Democrats had a good idea they could kill, including a more effective health care plan (not Obamacare) that would take care of the truly indegent among us..

It’s time to vote, not by party, but by the Constitution. First, become educated on the Constitution and educate your children and grandchildren about it. Hillsdale College has a free online course and it’s a good start, but reading the document itself, with all amendments, and the Federalist Papers in addition is better. Read what Madison, Franklin, and other framers had to say about intent, in their words not in revisionist books.

Then, only vote for candidates who will stick to it. Consider this…We pretty much followed our Constitution at the federal level until the Woodrow Wilson administration. In fact, when he was incapable of fulfilling the office, his wife took over his responsibilities. Definitely anti-Constitutional. That said…

Our nation was a 3rd world backwater country that beat the British army (not the world’s largest at the time as so many uninformed people say) and the British Navy the world’s largest at the time. We did it through attrition. Metaphorically, not politically, we were North Vietnam and Britain was the French, then Americans. We wore them out. Yes we trapped them at Yorktown, but that was due to a lack of sending more forces against us. The people of Britain grew war weary. We were draining blood and treasure.

Enough of the mini-lecture on history. The truth is, in 1789 we had a new Constitution. Just 125 years later we went from that backwater 3rd world nation to a superpower. We did this by adhering to the Constitution. It make us great financially and militarily.

Absent the U.S. involvement World War 1 could have been the 2nd Hundred Years War. We learned from that and developed a strong national defense with greater and better technology.

And we learned from that as well. The Germans’ technology outpaced our own. They had jets in the sky. Rockets launched from German striking targets in Britain and getting more and more sophisticated in a short period of time.

But in the intervening years, our politicians and our citizenry started slipping the Constitution under the rug. It really became birdcage liner in the 1960s and progressed from there.

Today, 33 years after Reagan wanted the SDI program, we’d have a tremendous Strategic Defense Initiative system in place that would cow-tow our adversaries when it comes to ICBMs. But we don’t. Why? Political Parties. Partisanship. What we need in office is more common sense and adherence to the Constitution. Those are the candidates we need to seek out, work for and get in office so we can truly Make America Great Again. Not in a Trumpian throwaway line, but as a matter of fact.

In-Custody Death Investigation Ongoing In Ocean City

(OCEAN CITY, MD) – At the request of the Ocean City Police Department, Maryland State Police criminal investigators are conducting an investigation into the death early this morning of a suspect who had been arrested and examined at a hospital, but, for reasons unknown at this time, had what appears to be a medical emergency and died after being transported back to the hospital.

The deceased is identified as Byron K. Tunnell, 28, of Ocean City, Md. He was pronounced dead at Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Md.

The preliminary investigation indicates that just before 11:00 p.m. yesterday, an Ocean City Police Department officer initiated a traffic stop on a 2004 Chrysler passenger car for a traffic violation on Baltimore Avenue near 20th Street, in Ocean City. The driver of the car, later identified as Tunnell, continued driving to the area of the 400-block of Bayshore Drive, near 26th Street. Upon stopping, Tunnell told the officer he knew his license was suspended and he wanted to get his car back to his house.

The officer informed Tunnell he was under arrest and attempted to handcuff him. Tunnell resisted arrest and a backup officer discharged his electronic control device, also known as a Taser. Officers on the scene said the device did not have its usual effect and Tunnell fled on foot from police.

Tunnell ran and tried to escape by going under a porch. As he ran, officers saw him discarding what appeared to be drugs. Officers later recovered two small baggies of suspected crack cocaine and a glass smoking device from this scene.

Officers took Tunnell into custody at the porch and immediately called emergency medical services to the scene, which is protocol after deployment of an electronic control device. Medics responded to the scene and, after an examination, determined Tunnell needed no further medical intervention. However, Tunnell requested to go to the hospital and officers agreed to take him there. Officers determined he should be taken to the hospital in a police department transport van, since he had previously fled.

An Ocean City Police Department transport van responded and took Tunnell to Atlantic General Hospital. He was examined at the hospital and released back into police custody shortly before 1:00 a.m. today.

Upon release from the hospital, Tunnell was placed back in the transport van to be taken to the police department for booking. The preliminary investigation indicates Tunnell was monitored through the audio and video system in the van by the police officer and public safety aid in the vehicle. During the transport back to the police station, Tunnell told police personnel he was not feeling well, but was okay. He also indicated to police he may have swallowed drugs prior to his arrest.

Minutes later, police transport personnel observed Tunnell having what appeared to be a seizure. The van was immediately stopped and emergency medical services were requested to respond to the area of Baltimore Avenue and 12th Street. Officers began performing CPR before EMS arrived. Tunnell was transported by ambulance back to Atlantic General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators are leading the investigation into this death, at the request of the Ocean City Police Department. State Police crime scene technicians are processing the scenes for evidence. Assistance is being provided by the State Police Criminal Enforcement Division, the Worcester County Bureau of Investigation, and the Ocean City Police Department Criminal Investigation Division. Investigators have also been in contact with the Worcester County State’s Attorney’s Office.

A Viewer Writes: Road Debris

There has been several incidents on Coulbourne Rd. and Goose Creek Development. Someone is consistently leaving debris on the road and putting it back on the road after it has been removed. This is all done to set the person up to throw rocks at cars. My sons Honda Fit was hit and damaged. A foot either way would have broken glass or hit him in the head. We filed a police report with the sheriffs office. We were also told that similar report was filed the day before with the state police.

A Word To The Wise - "You're A Mercenary If..."

I have no idea if Major General Higginbotham actually penned this or not but it is a stark warning, one that I have maintained for years, that a civil war in North America (if it happens in the USA it will take Mexico and Canada along for the ride) will not be as cut and dry and as some folks would like.

There are no definable sides to our current predicament, no political organization to speak of, and as such a wide spread conflict would become chaos in short order. The continent would get very tribal very quickly. Political ideologues proceed with caution.

You won’t like what you are about to read.

Via Kunckledraggin.com,

“If you are paid $25.00 an hour to show up to a rally to “counter” the other party using physical force and violence, you are not a “counter protestor.” You are a mercenary.

There is no need for further debate on this. You were paid to attack someone you don’t know for reasons that you couldn’t care enough about to go there for free. You did your “job” and collected your check and your reimbursement of expenses. You’re a mercenary.

Not a Patriot. Not a Social Justice Warrior. Not a Defender of Freedom or Liberty. Not an upholder of Truth or Justice. None of those things you claim to be. You are a mercenary.

And mercenaries are not lawful combatants and deserve whatever comes their way at the hands of the people they are attacking.

Judge Ricard Posner Announces Retirement

Judge Richard Posner of the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals announced his retirement Friday afternoon, affording President Donald Trump the opportunity to replace a legal titan on the Chicago-based federal appeals court.

Posner is one of the most consequential legal figures of recent times, exerting significant influence on the practice and study of law from his perches on the Seventh Circuit and the University of Chicago Law School faculty. Something of an intellectual gadfly, he has written 50 books, 500 academic articles, and several thousand legal opinions on a wide range of subjects, a prodigious output surpassing even Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendall Holmes, Posner’s hero and perhaps the most lettered Supreme Court justice of his time. And Posner is almost certainly the most read jurist of recent decades: The Journal of Legal Studies says he was the most cited legal scholar of the 20th century.

Posner subscribes to a method of judging called “pragmatism,” which seeks to balance the equities of each case and conform judicial rulings to the social, political, and economic arrangements of the times. He touted his commitment to pragmatism in announcing his retirement.

COMMENTARY: Another Labor Day without labor reform

This Labor Day, millions of Americans will celebrate their day off with backyard barbecues and a family trip to the beach.

But we shouldn’t lose sight of the holiday’s deeper meaning. Labor Day celebrates employees’ “freedom of association,” our right to choose the workplace best suited to us.

Unfortunately, workplace freedom is not a reality in one part of the country: Union America. Less than 10 percent of union members ever voted for the union currently “representing” them. The few who did were never guaranteed a secret ballot election. Moreover, union members are not guaranteed recertification elections once a union is in power, leaving them with little opportunity to re-vote on union representation — even when the workforce turns over and the original voters are gone.

The problem stems from outdated labor laws. American labor law has not been substantially updated since the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, which outlined unfair labor practices to protect employers and employees from union harassment. Despite the best of intentions, seventy years later, labor unions continue to exploit the status quo to maintain their stranglehold on the workplace.

Tensions Boil at Australian Universities as Chinese Communism Permeates

Tensions are rising at some Australian universities amid concerns that the Chinese government is infiltrating teaching methods across the faculties, according to a report from news.com.au.

The concerns have arisen after multiple incidents of Chinese students demanding changes to teaching methods, as well as demanding apologies from lecturers about the way they explore certain topics.

The trend has led to concern across Australia of the growing threat of the Chinese Communist Party’s authoritarian ideology infiltrating universities and potentially influencing other students.

Some students have even posted footage online of lecturers going against the Chinese Communist Party’s ideology.

Last week, a student at the Chinese University of Newcastle uploaded footage of him arguing with a lecturer who referred to Hong Kong and Taiwan as independent countries.

“You are making us feel uncomfortable,” the student tells business professor Nimay Khaliani. “You have to consider all the students.”

It Wasn't Comey's Decision To Exonerate Hillary - It Was Obama's

The thing to understand, what has always been the most important thing to understand, is that Jim Comey was out in front, but he was not calling the shots.

On the right, the commentariat is in full-throttle outrage over the revelation that former FBI Director Comey began drafting his statement exonerating Hillary Clinton in April 2016 – more than two months before he delivered the statement at his now famous July 5 press conference.

The news appears in a letter written to new FBI Director Christopher Wray by two senior Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, Chairman Chuck Grassley and Senator Lindsey Graham. Pundits and the Trump administration are shrieking because this indicates the decision to give the Democrats’ nominee a pass was clearly made long before the investigation was over, and even long before key witnesses, including Clinton herself, were interviewed.

It shows, they cry, that the fix was in!

News Flash: This is not news.

Let’s think about what else was going on in April 2016. I’ve written about it a number of times over the last year-plus, such as in a column a few months back:

On April 10, 2016, President Obama publicly stated that Hillary Clinton had shown “carelessness” in using a private e-mail server to handle classified information, but he insisted that she had not intended to endanger national security (which is not an element of the [criminal statutes relevant to her e-mail scandal]). The president acknowledged that classified information had been transmitted via Secretary Clinton’s server, but he suggested that, in the greater scheme of things, its importance had been vastly overstated.

Fontaine: Positive Reaction to Harvey Has ‘Restored My Faith in Humanity

Tom Fontaine, a Houston-based radio producer, and Hurricane Harvey survivor discussed his house flooding, evacuation by boat, and the ongoing cleanup effort in Houston post-Harvey.

Fontaine described the events around the flooding, his family’s evacuation and help from friends to find a place to stay, adding, “It’s restored my faith in humanity. Everybody is just helping everybody. People I haven’t talked to in six months, a year, sometimes five years have emailed me, texted me, hey what do you need, I’ll drive down there. I’ll send supplies, what do you need?”

He called it “refreshing” to see how the Houston community has really come together, going on to discuss how neighbors are helping neighbors clean up and start to resettle and even those unaffected are helping others when and where they can..

Flashback: The Corporate Takeover Destroying The Red Cross

[Originally published Dec 14, 2015]

When Gail McGovern was picked to head the American Red Cross in 2008, the organization was reeling. Her predecessor had been fired after impregnating a subordinate. The charity was running an annual deficit of hundreds of millions of dollars.

A former AT&T executive who had taught marketing at Harvard Business School, McGovern pledged to make the tough choices that would revitalize the Red Cross, which was chartered by Congress to provide aid after disasters. In a speech five years ago, she imagined a bright future, a "revolution" in which there would be "a Red Cross location in every single community."

It hasn’t worked out that way.

McGovern and her handpicked team of former AT&T colleagues have presided over a string of previously unreported management blunders that have eroded the charity’s ability to fulfill its core mission of aiding Americans in times of need.

Under McGovern, the Red Cross has slashed its payroll by more than a third, eliminating thousands of jobs and closing hundreds of local chapters. Many veteran volunteers, who do the vital work of responding to local fires and floods have also left, alienated by what many perceive as an increasingly rigid, centralized management structure.

Far from opening offices in every city and town, the Red Cross is stumbling in response to even smaller scale disasters.

When a wildfire swept through three Northern California counties in September, the Red Cross showed up but provided shelter to just 25 of 1,000 victims at one site. Because of the charity’s strict rules and disorganization, many evacuees slept outside for over a week, even when the weather turned bad. "These families were sleeping in the rain with their children," said Wendy Lopez, a local volunteer.

Local officials were so angry they relieved the Red Cross of its duties.

Some emergency planners around the country have concluded they can no longer rely on the charity..

Cleveland police, rescue unions won't hold U.S. flag in NFL opener, citing Browns' protest

Unions that represent Cleveland police officers and first responders will not participate in one of the annual rites that precede NFL openers, with leaders saying they were offended when Browns players knelt during the national anthem before a preseason game.

The head of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association says that they have decided not to hold part of the gigantic American flag as part of the pregame ceremony at the Browns' Sept. 10 opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Typically, players, first responders, politicians and military members join in, too.

"When management allows you to do those things, then that's on them," Steve Loomis, the police union's president, told Cleveland.com. "It's hypocritical of the Browns management and ownership to want to have an armed forces first-responder day, and have us involved in it when they allow their players to take a knee during the national anthem. That's the very representation of what we stand for. That's why we aren't going to."'

The Red Cross Won’t Save Houston

It has proven itself unequal to the task of massive disaster relief. We need a new kind of humanitarian response.

In 2004, I was just starting my first full-time job in a Washington newsroom when disaster struck. It was on the other side of the world: an extraordinarily powerful earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia, that triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean. But thanks to CNN it felt like the anguish and terror were happening in the next cubicle. I still remember the fear on the fishermen’s faces and watching mothers cry as they searched for their children in the waves. Powerless, eager to help, I did the only thing I could think of: I went online and sent $20 to the American Red Cross.

Thirteen years later, we’re watching another disaster, this time much closer to home. Tropical Storm Harvey, supercharged by a freakishly warm Gulf of Mexico, has slammed into the Texas coast and is now running a days-long conveyor belt carrying trillions of gallons of water from the ocean to the sky to the bayous and streets of Houston. Highways have become rivers in America’s fourth-largest city. Apartment complexes are filling up like bathtubs. Dams are nearing failure. Thousands have had to be rescued from the still-rising flood waters in the overbuilt, improperly drained city. The scariest part is that, with the water still rising, no one can really know how bad the damage has been so far or what is to come. Once again, most of us outside the zone feel powerless but want to help. Once again, leaders and noble souls are telling us the best way to do so is to turn to the best known, most bi-partisanly-loved brand in humanitarian relief.

But I won’t be donating to the Red Cross this time. And after years of reporting on and inside some of the biggest disasters of the decade and change, I know what a costly mistake the focus on donating anywhere can be.

Local first responders encounter extreme conditions in Texas

WASHINGTON — Floating balls of fire ants are just some of the extreme conditions facing local first responders who are in Texas helping flood victims.

“Heat, humidity, large mosquitoes, flotillas of fire ants in the water (and) rising floodwaters were a few of the challenges endured not only by the community … but our task force members and (other first responders),” Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesman Pete Piringer said, speaking for Maryland Task Force 1.

Working the area of Angleton, Texas, and the wider Brazoria County area, Piringer said Maryland Task Force 1 had contact with about 60 people over the weekend while conducting door-to-door searches, evacuating some families and pets and helping others shelter in place.

Maryland’s hazardous materials unit teamed up with task force crews from multiple states to decontaminate areas after floodwater exposure.

Flashback: Red Cross Spent 25 Percent Of Haiti Donations On Internal Expenses

[Originally published June 16, 2016]

The American Red Cross spent a quarter of the money people donated after the 2010 Haiti earthquake — or almost $125 million — on its own internal expenses, far more than the charity previously had disclosed, according to a report released Thursday by Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley.

The report also says the charity's top officials stonewalled congressional investigators and released incomplete information about its Haiti program to the public. It concludes "there are substantial and fundamental concerns about [the Red Cross] as an organization."

The report follows a nearly year-long investigation by the Iowa Republican and his staff, launched after coverage by NPR and ProPublica of the Red Cross' Haiti response. The venerated charity raised nearly $500 million after the disaster, more than any other non-profit, but an ambitious plan to build housing resulted in just six permanent homes, NPR and ProPublica found.

Other findings in Sen. Grassley's report:

‘Citizen Newt’

Author and historian Craig Shirley talked about his new book Citizen Newt: The Making of a Reagan Conservative on Friday’s edition of Breitbart News Daily.

“You are hard-pressed, in the 230-year history of the American republic, to come up with the name of a political leader who wasn’t president who has had as long-lasting an impact on the national political debate as Newt Gingrich,” Shirley told SiriusXM host Alex Marlow.

“Henry Clay, yeah, 20 years. William Jennings Bryan, yeah, about 20 years. But Gingrich burst on the national political scene in the late Seventies, and here we are some 30 or 40 years later, and he’s still relevant. He’s still advising presidents. His opinion is still sought-after. He’s still giving major speeches and writing books, and doing documentaries, and still very much relevant to what is going on currently in American politics,” he said.

“That in and of itself is remarkable, his longevity is remarkable,” he observed. “Nixon lasted a long time, but he was a president. Reagan lasted a long time, long before they were president, going back to the Forties, but again he was president. That, in and of itself, I think makes it worthy of a study.”

Indiana University Rejects Demands to Remove KKK Section from Historical Mural

Indiana University is rejecting demands for the removal of a depiction of the Ku Klux Klan from a mural located on campus, claiming that it represents history.

Administrators at Indiana University have decided to keep a controversial section of a mural that depicts the Ku Klux Klan after a petition to have it removed garnered over 1,000 signatures.

“This petition requests the removal of the 9th panel to foster a safe and inclusive environment for all students and faculty at Indiana University as these are in fact modern depictions and not just depictions of a historical time in Indiana,” the petition reads.

The section, which is a part of a 22-panel mural painted by 20th-century artist Thomas Hart Benton, depicts members of the Ku Klux Klan and a burning cross. The mural was painted for the 1933 World’s Fair and included images of the Ku Klux Klan to “show all aspects” of the state’s history.

A statement by Indiana University administrators to the College Fix suggests that the institution feels that the mural serves as a historical reference for atrocities committed by citizens of the state. It “serve(s) as a reminder and testimonial to an unsavory and criminal portion of Indiana’s history,” they said in a statement.

GUEST COMMENTARY: FOR MARYLANDERS WITH DISABILITIES, HELP IS ON THE WAY

For more than two decades, disability rights advocates have pushed for tax-preferred savings accounts to allow individuals with disabilities to save money without jeopardizing state and federal means-tested benefits like Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), food or housing assistance. Last week, the Maryland 529 Board approved an intergovernmental cooperative agreement with the State of Oregon and Sumday Administration, LLC (a subsidiary of Bank of New York Mellon (BNYM), for the savings program known as Maryland ABLE (Achieving Better Life Experiences), which is now headed to the Board of Public Works for final approval on Wednesday.

After final Board of Public Works approval, which is expected to be unanimous, the Maryland ABLE program will be overseen by the public agency responsible for the state’s $6.24 billion college savings plans.

Maryland ABLE is part of a national, bipartisan effort to provide more independence, greater financial security, and a better quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Once the program is launched, Marylanders with qualified disabilities will be able to save up to $100,000 in their Maryland ABLE account above beyond the paltry $2,000 currently set by the SSI program without threatening their public assistance.

Black Pastors Destroy Liberal Narrative About Trump’s “Racism”

A group of conservative black pastors and intellectual leaders on Monday [August 14th] defended President Donald Trump amid criticism of his initial response to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend.

While some, like Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer, have claimed that there is a "direct line" between the events in Charlottesville and the choices Trump made in his 2016 presidential campaign, conservative African-American clergy members, scholars and political activists decried such an argument in a Monday press conference at the National Press Club.

Organized by The Center of Urban Renewal and Education (CURE), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit think tank founded by conservative political commentator and activist Star Parker, the press conference was originally scheduled for the purpose of praising the Trump administration's plan to revitalize inner cities.

Parker and the various African-American leaders standing with her at the podium were asked whether it is "disingenuous to pretend that President Trump is not the driver for a lot of the division we see now in this country."

The Rev. Derek McCoy, CURE's executive vice president who also directs the CURE National Clergy Network, was the first to respond to the question.

"One thing you need to understand — you are saying that the president is the instigator and I think that is absolutely wrong. No, it is not disingenuous," McCoy asserted.

William Allen, a professor of political philosophy at Michigan State University who formerly served as the chairman of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, also responded. He specifically recalled a time in 1977 when the American Civil Liberties Union defended the right of Nazi supporters to wear Nazi uniforms and display swastikas when the National Socialist Party of America marched through the predominantly Jewish community of Skokie, Illinois.

Larry Hogan, Maryland governor, stirs debate over statue removal

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican leading one of the country’s most liberal states, won rare applause from the left but riled some of his conservative base with his decision to back the recent removal of a Civil War-era statue from the State House grounds.

The statue of Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney — author of the Dred Scott ruling in 1857 that reaffirmed slavery and denied citizenship to blacks — was caught up in the rush to topple Confederate monuments after deadly violence at an Aug. 12 white nationalist demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The politics surrounding the removal of the 145-year-old statue of Taney, who never joined the Confederacy and early in his life freed slaves he inherited, proved as complicated as Maryland’s Civil War history.

Mr. Hogan, who had been opposed to the removal of Civil War statues, called it “the right thing to do.”

For Sue Payne, a conservative activist in Maryland, it was the last straw.

Breaking News: Hurricane Irma strengthened into a Category 5 storm

Hurricane Irma Strengthens Into Category 5, and Florida Braces for Possible Landfall

Hurricane Irma, fresh on the heels of Hurricane Harvey, strengthened early Tuesday into a Category 5 storm with maximum winds of 175 miles per hour, as Florida started to prepare for its potential landfall over the weekend.

The latest forecasts have Irma on a more direct path toward South Florida, raising the possibility that the United States could be hit with back-to-back major hurricanes. Gov. Rick Scott of Florida declared a state of emergency on Monday for the state’s 67 counties.

“Hurricane Irma is a major and life-threatening storm, and Florida must be prepared,” Mr. Scott said in a statement. The last hurricane to hit Florida was Matthew last October, which brushed up along its east coast before making landfall in South Carolina as a Category 1 storm.

Pizza Hut Workers Use Kayaks To Deliver Food To Hurricane Harvey Victims

In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, flood waters have wreaked havoc on much of southeastern Texas. So when a Pizza Hut manager heard there were families trapped in their homes without food, she decided that if she couldn’t get to them by land, she’d send pizza over the water — by kayak.

16 USPS Workers Join Mail Carrier Hall Of Shame For Allegedly Taking Bribes To Deliver Drugs

It looks like The Mail Carrier Of Shame may soon have a slew of new members: Federal officials have accused 16 Atlanta-area U.S. Postal Service workers of accepting bribes in exchange for delivering cocaine along their routes.

Federal Disaster Loans Could Be Difficult To Obtain After Harvey

Around 80% of homeowners in areas devastated by flooding from Hurricane Harvey don’t have insurance policies that will cover much of the damage done to their properties. Federal disaster loans offer victims one pathway toward recovery, but obtaining that financing could be a difficult, drawn-out endeavor.

Skin cancer starts as marks in two-thirds of cases

Deadly skin cancer starts as new spots on the skin, not moles, in more than two-thirds of cases, new research reveals.

In 71 per cent of incidences, melanoma, the most life-threatening form of skin cancer, develops as marks on the skin, rather than arising from existing moles, a study found.

For unclear reasons, melanomas from existing moles generally have a better prognosis than those that appear as new spots, the research adds.

Yet, despite these findings, experts still recommend people check their moles regularly for any changes.

The below ABCDE guideline tells you what to look out for.
