Skin cancer starts as marks in two-thirds of cases

Deadly skin cancer starts as new spots on the skin, not moles, in more than two-thirds of cases, new research reveals.

In 71 per cent of incidences, melanoma, the most life-threatening form of skin cancer, develops as marks on the skin, rather than arising from existing moles, a study found.

For unclear reasons, melanomas from existing moles generally have a better prognosis than those that appear as new spots, the research adds.

Yet, despite these findings, experts still recommend people check their moles regularly for any changes.

The below ABCDE guideline tells you what to look out for.

  1. Visit a dermatologist regularly even though that's tough to do in the area.

  2. I've had melanoma three times but it was caught and removed by my dermatologist each time. Regular doctors visits are very important.

  3. Moles are where MOST skin cancers (Basal Cell & Squamous Cell) arise from. Melanoma is much less prevalent and much deadlier that the other two types of skin cancer, as it is much more likely to metastasize (spread to other parts of the body) and is harder to cure. With Basal and Squamous, getting rid of the bad mole early is often all that is needed to prevent the cancer. Keep checking those moles folks!

  4. Speaking of hard to make an appointment...YOU BET. Not only that ....keep an eye on your insurance documents to see what they are paying for. I have caught my doctor charging for things that were never done. Once you get an appointment you can wait and wait and wait in the waiting room....it should be called the "grow old from sitting forever room"
