Super Bowl Field Crew Goofs, Paints Broncos Logo In Both End Zones

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) – In the annals of Super Bowl gaffes, this one is a cut below. But the Denver Broncos weren’t complaining.

Field preparations at Levi’s Stadium for Super Bowl 50 were going along swimmingly by all accounts, until a few people discovered something amiss on the freshly-painted turf.

The mistake almost went unnoticed by all those milling about the stadium, but photographers were able to get the evidence of the field crew’s lack of communication.

THE UNTHINKABLE? Hillary, Bernie not shy about plans to raise taxes

Benjamin Franklin is credited with the observation that nothing is certain “except death and taxes.”

Bernie Sanders would probably agree, and then some. In an election season marked by populist anger, his plan to raise at least $19.58 trillion in higher taxes over 10 years -- almost 20 times the tax hikes Hillary Clinton proposes -- has not dulled his rise.

And, despite the anti-tax fervor of the Tea Party wave a few years ago, neither Democratic candidate seems shy about pushing an aggressive tax plan in their presidential primary battle.

"Raising taxes in the Democratic primary is a vote winner," said Grover Norquist, of the anti-tax Americans for Tax Reform.

Sanders, for one, was defiant about his proposed tax hikes at a CNN town hall on Monday.

"I start off with the premise that in the last 30 years ... there's been a massive redistribution of wealth in this country," Sanders said. "It's gone from working families, trillions of dollars, to the top one-tenth of 1 percent."

Obama promises party faithful: ‘Democrats will win’

BALTIMORE (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday promised his most fervent supporters on Capitol Hill the “Democrats will win in November” and said it’s going to take more than “phony tough talk and bluster” to defeat Islamic militants.

Appearing before House Democrats at a retreat in Baltimore, Obama said the country is “doing a lot better” than when he took office, citing progress against Islamic State forces and curbing Iran’s nuclear program — as well as lower gas prices, 18 million people gaining health insurance and 5 percent unemployment.

In a not-so-veiled shot at GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump, Obama said the U.S. won’t strengthen itself “by allowing politicians to insult Muslims or pit groups of Americans against each other.”

Md. man spends $40k to clear his street for a greater cause

BETHESDA, Md. — A Maryland man spent more than $40,000 to plow his own street, but says his reasons extend beyond his neighborhood.

As retired firefighter Richard Hoye points to what he’s spent on a garage full of equipment including his skid steer, plow and other attachments, he explains it still took him two full days to clear his dead-end street for his neighbors.

“Being a firefighter and being retired, I really have a passion for tools and I don’t get access quite as much. So this is my midlife crisis toy,” he jokes.

But even after the expected melt next week, Hoye says there will be work to do.

German City Bans Refugees From Nightclubs

The German city of Freiburg announced that it has banned refugees from nightclubs following several accusations of sexual harassment and theft, the Daily Mail reports.

Women who visited the nightclubs claimed the refugees had drugged their drinks with date-rape subtances and assaulted females in the bathrooms. One woman alleged that she had been raped and seen a bouncer stabbed.

Due to the collective complaints, six different clubs have banned refugees. The weekend headline for the local newspaper, Badische Zeitung, read, “No more entry for asylum seekers.”

While six clubs have partaken in the universal ban, one club said they will admit refugees if the refugees accept a special card that represents the rejection of “violence, sexism, and discrimination.”

OC Airport seeks county water, sewer

City officials are seeking state help to bail the Ocean City Municipal Airport out of its water and sewage drainage issues.

During Tuesday’s afternoon work session, the City Council moved to apply for a Maryland Aviation Administration grant to be used to cover 75 percent of the cost of connecting the airport’s facilities to Worcester County’s water and sewage services.

“Currently it operates on a well, and a drain fill down off Airport Road in the vicinity of the Lion’s club parking lot that services the terminal,” Director of Public Works Hal Adkins told the council. “There were discussion a long time ago to hook up the airport to central sewage, along with the golf course clubhouse and the animal shelter. Those two are done, so we’re looking to complete the airport project.”

FBI ran website sharing thousands of child porn images

WASHINGTON — For nearly two weeks last year, the FBI operated what it described as one of the Internet’s largest child pornography websites, allowing users to download thousands of illicit images and videos from a government site in the Washington suburbs.

The operation — whose details remain largely secret — was at least the third time in recent years that FBI agents took control of a child pornography site but left it online in an attempt to catch users who officials said would otherwise remain hidden behind an encrypted and anonymous computer network. In each case, the FBI infected the sites with software that punctured that security, allowing agents to identify hundreds of users.

The Justice Department acknowledged in court filings that the FBI operated the site, known as Playpen, from Feb. 20 to March 4, 2015. At the time, the site had more than 215,000 registered users and included links to more than 23,000 sexually explicit images and videos of children, including more than 9,000 files that users could download directly from the FBI. Some of the images described in court filings involved children barely old enough for kindergarten.

The real story behind Danny Boy, the beloved Irish ballad

Many Irish people have a love/hate relationship with the popular song "Danny Boy." The opening lyrics are sure to draw a few voices of dissent from the crowd if a singer takes it upon themselves to belt out one of the most over-played songs in the history of overplayed songs and yet, the same dissenters will willingly join in if the mood strikes and they're feeling particularly homesick.

Few people are aware, however, of the true origins of Ireland's infamous and unofficial national anthem, such as the fact that it's not even a completely Irish song.

In 2001, the Irish-American actor and writer Malachy McCourt took it upon himself to unravel the mystery of perhaps the most popular Irish song ever in his book "Danny Boy: The Legend of the Beloved Irish Ballad."

Who is Danny? Why are the pipes calling? And why did Catholic dioceses ban the beloved ballad's use during funerals?

Advocates Of Right To Die Bring Back Bill In Annapolis

Maryland supporters of allowing terminally ill residents to legally end their lives with drugs prescribed by a doctor are reintroducing legislation this year.

Supporters said Thursday the measure would allow mentally capable, terminally ill patients with less than six months to live to obtain prescription drugs they could ingest themselves, if their suffering becomes unbearable.

Del. Shane Pendergrass, a Howard County Democrat who is sponsoring the bill, says the choice would be up to the individual, who would self-administer the drug.

Governor Hogan Announces Chris Shank as Deputy Chief of Staff

ANNAPOLIS, MD - Governor Larry Hogan today announced Chris Shank as a new deputy chief of staff. Shank currently serves as the executive director of the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention.

“Chris has used his wealth of experience in government and public safety to successfully lead one of our administration’s most important coordinating offices, and I have every confidence he will continue to use that experience to excel in his new role as a deputy chief of staff,” said Governor Hogan.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to support the Hogan administration in this new role,” said Shank. “This is an exciting opportunity to continue to serve the citizens of this great state and help change Maryland for the better.”

Shank joined the Hogan administration in January 2015. Prior to his appointment, Shank was a member of the Maryland General Assembly, serving Washington County as a delegate from 1999 to 2011 and as a senator from 2011 to 2015. During that time, he served as Minority Whip and a member of several committees including the Joint Committee on Access to Mental Health Services, Special Joint Commission on Public Safety and Security in State and Local Correctional Facilities, and the Governor's Commission to Reform Maryland's Pretrial System. As part of his duties as deputy chief of staff, Shank will continue to actively manage the Justice Reinvestment Coordinating Council – a multi-agency initiative to reform Maryland’s criminal justice system – and advise the governor on matters of public safety.

Shank will replace Amanda O’Malley, who is departing to pursue other professional opportunities.

Why Didn't DOJ Prosecute Clinton Donor?

Citizens United, a conservative advocacy group, is seeking federal records on why the Department of Justice (DOJ) ignored a federal grand jury indictment of a major Democratic Party donor who ordered illegal medical procedures that killed five elderly patients, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned.

A federal grand jury named Hansjorg Wyss, former CEO of Synthes, Inc., as “Person No. 7” in a 2009 indictment that stated he directed subordinates in executive management meetings to conduct illegal human drug trials using an untested but potentially lucrative medical compound for spines.

Synthes and its subsidiary, Norian Corporation, inserted a new compound into unsuspecting patients even though the drug was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). At the time of the indictment, FDA identified three patients who had died — two more died in the years thereafter.

Official: Some Clinton emails 'too damaging' to release

EXCLUSIVE: The intelligence community has now deemed some of Hillary Clinton’s emails “too damaging" to national security to release under any circumstances, according to a U.S. government official close to the ongoing review. A second source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, backed up the finding.

The decision to withhold the documents in full, and not provide even a partial release with redactions, further undercuts claims by the State Department and the Clinton campaign that none of the intelligence in the emails was classified when it hit Clinton's personal server.

Fox News is told the emails include intelligence from "special access programs," or SAP, which is considered beyond “Top Secret.” A Jan. 14 letter, first reported by Fox News, from intelligence community Inspector General Charles McCullough III notified senior intelligence and foreign relations committee leaders that "several dozen emails containing classified information” were determined to be “at the CONFIDENTIAL, SECRET, AND TOP SECRET/SAP levels."

IRS Ethics Chief Once Ordered Records Illegally Destroyed

The new head of the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) ethics office once oversaw the illegal shredding of documents sought by the federal tax agency’s inspector general (IG), and allegedly retaliated on the colleague he believed snitched on him about it.

Stephen Whitlock was named director of the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) in August 2015. The OPR supports “effective tax administration by ensuring all tax practitioners, tax-preparers, and other third parties in the tax system adhere to professional standards and follow the law,” according to the agency’s web site.

Whitlock’s chief of operations was, until recently, a former tax enforcement agent who attempted to avoid government payments by declaring bankruptcy and who even lost his official sidearm in a bar fight.

Additionally, in this newly-appointed 7-person leadership team are two of Lois Lerner’s former top deputies, at least one of whom was involved in the targeting of conservative and Tea Party non-profit applicants. Records of those activities also mysteriously disappeared after Congress began investigations in 2013.

Hillary Clinton Weighs Making Investment Income Taxable for Social Security

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said that she would consider making investment income taxable through Social Security deductions in a bid to keep the government program afloat, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Clinton, the front-runner for the party's nomination in the Nov. 2016 contest, made the comments while campaigning in Iowa, where her lead has slipped in recent weeks ahead of the state's early voting contest.

"I am worried about certain recipients because I think it's important to enhance the benefits," the Journal reported Clinton as saying at a campaign event in the city of Decorah.

"We do have to extend the life of the trust fund and that's going to take some new funding," she said.

Why The President Is Right About Solitary Confinement

By Christopher Zoukis

President Obama's recent announcement concerning sweeping revisions to the way the Federal Bureau of Prisons uses solitary confinement couldn't have come at a better time.

Most news outlets focused on the new restriction on housing juveniles in such restrictive housing, and this should be commended as children should not be held in isolation. But several other aspects of this topic deserve significant attention.

First and foremost, while the bureau has repeatedly said that only the most violent or worst of the worst are housed in segregated confinement, this simply is not the case.

Solitary confinement – officially called the “Special Housing Unit” or “SHU” – is used for a variety of reasons. These include protective custody, housing those under investigation for misconduct, and those serving formal sanctions for violating the bureau's disciplinary code. Obama’s announcement touches on all three of these categories.

As it concerns prisoners housed in protective custody, in the current era this means solitary confinement. These prisoners are simply held in isolation, which consists of 23 to 24-hour lockdown for months or years on end.

This is a sickening practice considering that most of those subjected to protective custody are not violent, but scared and inexperienced in prison life. More often than not these are informants, sex offenders, or other “softer” sorts who can't cut it in the land of the convict.

Former Wounded Warriors Volunteers Slam Org's Spending

One of the nation's most recognizable charities for wounded veterans reportedly spends as much money on lavish conferences and parties as it does on services and programs.

According to a CBS News report, which aired Tuesday with a follow-up Wednesday, spending by the Wounded Warriors charity on conferences and meetings went from $1.7 million in 2010, to $26 million in 2014 — about the same amount the organization lays out for combat stress recovery, its top program.

The charity brought in more than $300 million in donations in 2014, CBS News reports.

"Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, but what the public doesn't see is how they spend their money," Army Staff Sergeant and Purple Heart recipient Erick Millette, who suffered a traumatic brain injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after his service in Iraq in 2006, tells CBS News.

Millette was hired as a public speaker for the Wounded Warrior Project in 2013 but quit after two years, CBS News reports.

"You're using our injuries, our darkest days, our hardships, to make money. So you can have these big parties," he told CBS News.

Worcester in running to host next Punkin Chunkin

When the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association, the internationally recognized governing body for projectile pumpkins, announced a “save the chunk” campaign earlier this month, Worcester County answered the call.

It was one of three counties in the area to step forward as a potential site for the high-flying event, which hasn’t taken place for the past two years because of insurance problems.

Punkin Chunkin needs a great deal of space, as it tests the bounds of engineering and perhaps good sense by fostering the construction of powerful air cannons and trebuchets built solely to fling produce anywhere from a few hundred yards to more than three-quarters of a mile.

A volunteer was seriously injured in an ATV accident during the 2011 event. A lawsuit seeking damages for the volunteer’s injuries filed in 2013 was settled last summer on undisclosed terms.

As Debate Over Racial Casting Heats Up, White Brit Cast to Play Michael Jackson

With the entertainment industry currently embroiled in a debate over the lack of diversity in film, UK pay TV network Sky Arts may have picked the wrong time to announce that British actor Joseph Fiennes will play pop icon Michael Jackson in a new half-hour comedy special.

The project, "Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon," will center around an unlikely road trip that Jackson and friends Elizabeth Taylor (Stockard Channing) and Marlon Brando (Brian Cox) allegedly took from New York to Ohio in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

In a statement regarding Fiennes' casting, Sky Arts said, "'Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon' is a Sky Arts comedy which takes a light-hearted look at a reportedly true event; Joseph Fiennes is cast as Michael Jackson. It is part of a series of comedies about unlikely stories from arts and cultural history. Sky Arts gives producers the creative freedom to cast roles as they wish, within the diversity framework which we have set."

Maine Governor Tells Gun Owners to 'Get Rid of Drug Dealers'

One day Maine's governor is talking about using the guillotine on drug dealers. The next, he's talking about using guns.

Gov. Paul LePage told reporters Wednesday that Mainers are allowed to carry concealed handguns and added: "Load up and get rid of the drug dealers."

LePage later said he wasn't suggesting vigilantism.

His comments during a visit to Lewiston come a day after he joked about using the guillotine on drug dealers.

The Republican governor has voiced frustration over out-of-state drug dealers he blames for fueling Maine's heroin epidemic. He said he supports charging them with a homicide if their drugs are linked to an overdose death. He also said Maine should bring back the death penalty.

Bernie Sanders’s fiction-filled campaign

SEN. BERNIE Sanders (I-Vt.) is leading in New Hampshire and within striking distance in Iowa, in large part because he is playing the role of uncorrupted anti-establishment crusader. But Mr. Sanders is not a brave truth-teller. He is a politician selling his own brand of fiction to a slice of the country that eagerly wants to buy it.

[Katrina vanden Heuvel: Bernie Sanders is the realist we should elect]

Mr. Sanders’s tale starts with the bad guys: Wall Street and corporate money. The existence of large banks and lax campaign finance laws explains why working Americans are not thriving, he says, and why the progressive agenda has not advanced. Here is a reality check: Wall Street has already undergone a round of reform, significantly reducing the risks big banks pose to the financial system. The evolution and structure of the world economy, not mere corporate deck-stacking, explained many of the big economic challenges the country still faces. And even with radical campaign finance reform, many Americans and their representatives would still oppose the Sanders agenda.

Mr. Sanders’s story continues with fantastical claims about how he would make the European social model work in the United States. He admits that he would have to raise taxes on the middle class in order to pay for his universal, Medicare-for-all health-care plan, and he promises massive savings on health-care costs that would translate into generous benefits for ordinary people, putting them well ahead, on net. But he does not adequately explain where those massive savings would come from. Getting rid of corporate advertising and overhead would only yield so much. Savings would also have to come from slashing payments to doctors and hospitals and denying benefits that people want.

Fancypants College Grad Whines About Loans

Slate, a once-semi-readable website, published a 2,925-word tome on Tuesday by a guy who is really sad because he managed to rack up $200,000 in student loan debt by getting a useless degree at a fancypants private college and then, by borrowing more cash to be a graduate student.

The bitter, billowing borrower is Samuel Garner — currently a bioethicist at a Washington, D.C. nonprofit.

Garner’s tale of woe and world-historical budgetary stupidity begins — as he tells it, in excruciating detail — when he was a high school senior. He was a “consumer” of the “vacuous platitudes” on college brochures, and so he excitedly applied to Connecticut College — a school which currently charges a comprehensive fee of $62,965 per year.

“My siblings and I had the privilege of expecting we would attend private colleges,” Garner explains, even though his family had become “financially stressed” when he was in high school.

Snow Hill Considering Vacant Building Ordinance To Address Blight

SNOW HILL– Snow Hill officials are hoping to put a stop to the increasing number of shuttered and deserted structures downtown with a new vacant building ordinance.

Though still in its early stages, the ordinance would set up a registration process and enable town staff to periodically inspect vacant buildings, both commercial and residential, in Snow Hill. There was standing room only at the old train station during a public hearing on the proposal Tuesday.

“It did what I wanted it to,” Snow Hill Mayor Charlie Dorman said. “It got the people talking about it.”

Dorman said vacant buildings had been a problem in Snow Hill for years. Currently there are 22 empty commercial buildings and close to 60 vacant homes. And they’re not just vacant—most are in need of extensive repairs.

DEA improperly paid TSA workers as confidential informants, IG says

The Drug Enforcement Agency has been paying federal employees to serve as informants in instances where they were just doing their day jobs, the Justice Department’s watchdog reports.

Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general, said the DEA improperly paid Amtrak and Transportation Security Administration workers for information that should have been shared with law enforcement as a matter of their day-to-day jobs.

The Office of the Inspector General began investigating the DEA after it found the agency paid an Amtrak informant $800,000 in reward money over a 20-year period, even though they should have gotten that information for free.

“I think here it was pretty clear that DEA should not have been paying federal employees,” Horowitz told the Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

Hillary: Obama On Supreme Court A 'Great Idea'

Hillary Clinton says it would be a “great idea” to appoint President Obama to the Supreme Court.
Tuesday, during a campaign rally in Decorah, Iowa, Clinton looked gleeful when asked if she would consider appointing Obama to the bench, for life, saying, “Wow, what a great idea. No one has ever suggested that to me, I love that, wow.”
As ABC News reports, Clinton followed up claiming that Obama “may have a few other things to do but I tell you that’s a great idea.”
The next president of the United States may have the opportunity to appoint upwards of three Supreme Court justices.

I Called It Years Ago, What Will Happen When Big Box Stores & Big Banks Start Closing

Many of my friends can tell you, I stated, (even on this Blog) what will happen WHEN the big box stores and banks start closing.

As you know, WalMart has officially announced they are starting to close hundreds of stores across America.

We taxpayers already lost trillions of dollars bailing out the big banks, is WalMart next?

We talked about the smaller Hardware Stores being forced to shut down because of the Home Depot's and Lowe's stores. Many Mom & Pop stores were also forced to close because of the WalMart's everywhere.

So here we are Folks, what's next? My guess, On Line Shopping. Nevertheless, tens of thousands of jobs will be lost and you have to ask yourself, will the new minimum wage and Obamacare crush even more big box stores too? I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

SUIT: Parents seek end to forced Islam ‘indoctrination’ school lessons In Maryland School

LA PLATA, Md. – A Maryland school district is staring down a federal lawsuit, accused of indoctrinating students in Islam by forcing them to memorize a conversion prayer, and banning a father who objected

The Thomas More Law Center, a national public interest law firm, filed a lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of John and Melissa Wood and their daughter, who attends La Plata High School.

“The Woods’ daughter was forced to profess and to write out the Shahada in worksheets and quizzes” as part of her World History class, according to the Center. “The Shahada is the Islamic Creed, ‘There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.’ For non-Muslims, reciting the statement is sufficient to convert one to Islam. Moreover, the second part of the statement … signifies the person has accepted Muhammad as their spiritual leader.

Porter Attorneys Say Forcing Client To Testify Is Unprecedented

The attorneys for Baltimore City Police Officer William Porter have filed a nearly 50-page argument with the Court of Special Appeals arguing that their client should not be forced to testify at trials of Officer Caesar Goodson and Sgt. Alicia White, two other officers charged in the April death of Freddie Gray.

Porter's own trial ended in a mistrial last month, when the jury could not reach a verdict on any of the four charges against him. Porter's retrial is set for June 13.

Goodson's trial was postponed earlier this month, after Porter's attorneys appealed the order forcing their client to testify at Goodson's trial

They argue that Porter's rights under both the U.S. and Maryland Constitution would be violated if he were forced to testify.
