The Five Brightest Ideas From This Year's Lightfair

Lightfair in Philadelphia this week bills itself as the world's largest commercial and architectural lighting trade show. But for the Consumer Reports staffers who test and report on energy-saving lightbulbs, Lightfair is our geeky go-to for the latest in lighting. As competition for the growing LED market heats up, manufacturers are promising lightbulbs that do more and cost less. Here are five developments from the show that turned us on.

Cree: Warm light at the right price
Consumers want energy-saving LEDs that look like incandescent lightbulbs and are lower-priced than earlier LEDs, says Craig Lofton of Cree. It makes perfect sense and explains why Cree recently introduced a $13 LED at Home Depot that's half the price of some and replaces a 60-watt incandescent. The Cree 60W Warm White Dimmable LED looks a lot like an incandescent and in our initial tests it did what it promised—it instantly gave off a warm, bright light. And its 10-year warranty is unusually long. "If you're going out there with a long-life product, you should put the teeth behind it," says Lofton.

Obama's Borrowed More Per Household ($53,616) Than Median Household Earns ($50,502)

Under President Barack Obama, the federal government's debt has increased by an amount per household that exceeds the annual median household income.

Since Obama’s first inauguration on Jan. 20, 2009, the federal debt has climbed $6,167,472,778,984.22. That equals about $53,616 for each of the 115,031,000 households the Census Bureau currently estimates are in the country.

By contrast, the Census Bureau’s most recent estimate of the median household income was $50,502 (for 2011).

When Should Old Medicines Be Thrown Away?

About a year after they expire. In most cases, prescription-drug expiration dates are one year to five years from the date they were made. But some pills can actually keep for a decade or even longer, research suggests. "Except for tetracycline, which can become toxic and cause kidney problems, expired drugs generally don't appear to cause harm," says Consumer Reports' chief medical advisor, Marvin M. Lipman, M.D. "But they do become less potent over time."

NYTIMES CONFIRMS: MASSIVE FRAUD AT USDA IN PIGFORD; BREITBART VINDICATED

The New York Times reported Friday that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has likely enabled massive fraud in the Pigford series of legal settlements, in which black, Hispanic, female and Native American farmers have claimed to be victims of past discrimination.

The cost of the settlements, which could exceed $4.4 billion, is the result of a process that "became a runaway train, driven by racial politics, pressure from influential members of Congress and law firms that stand to gain more than $130 million in fees," theTimes notes.

Among those influential members of Congress was then-Senator Barack Obama, who made Pigford payouts a priority in exchange for political support for his 2008 presidential campaign among a coveted group of black voters in the rural South, the Timesreports.

U.S. Government Sues Lance Armstrong To Get Post Office Sponsorship Money Back

In the years since the the United States Postal Service sponsored Lance Armstrong’s multiple Tour de France victories, the USPS has fallen into a serious financial crisis, and Armstrong has been exposed as a doping cheater and/or cheating dope. This chain of events has an obvious solution: why doesn’t the government sue Armstrong’s management and get that sponsorship money back?
In the big picture of the USPS’s shortfall, the $40 million paid to Armstrong isn’t huge. It might cover bringing back Saturday mail delivery for a few months. But isn’t the principle annoying?

Williams-Sonoma Pulls Pressure Cookers Out Of Massachusetts Stores

Two weeks ago, two improvised explosive devices detonated near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three spectators and injuring hundreds more. The bombs were made from pressure cookers filled with gunpowder and shrapnel. Pressure cookers, which use an airtight seal to trap steam and cook food above the normal boiling point of water, aren’t popular cooking tools in American homes today, but they are commonly available. At Williams-Sonoma stores, for example. Except in the Boston area: Patch reports that stores around there have temporarily pulled pressure cookers from their shelves.

BOSTON SUSPECTS’ MOM WAS ALSO IN TERROR DATABASE, SOURCES TELL AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence agencies added the mother of the Boston bombing suspects to a government terrorism database 18 months before the bombings, two officials told The Associated Press. She called it “lies and hypocrisy” and said she has never been linked to crimes or terrorism.

The CIA asked for the Boston terror suspect and his mother to be added to a terrorist database in the fall of 2011, after the Russian government contacted the agency with concerns that both had become religious militants, according to officials briefed on the investigation. About six months earlier, the FBI investigated Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, also at Russia’s request, one of the officials said. The FBI found no ties to terrorism.

Congressional Democrats Want To Know

Did gaps in federal regulations contribute to the fertilizer plant explosion in Texas? Congressional Democrats want to know. They have asked the Government Accountability Office to check whether the Occupational Safety and Health Administration should have been monitoring conditions inside the plant. OSHA is responsible for making sure more than 7 million workplaces are safe. But some facilities with fewer than ten employees are exempt from oversight. Conflicting reports show the West Texas plant might have had 13 employees or just seven. OSHA last inspected it in 1985.

From Tourist To Terrorist: Or What Not To Do While Traveling Between States With C CCL

On Saturday, 59-year-old Bobby Glen Jackson, who does security work as a side job, was arrested in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and scheduled to be extradited to New York on Monday to be charged with criminal possession of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

When Jackson, a concealed carry permit holder in North Carolina, took a trip with his wife and daughter to the World Trade Center, he made a decision that quickly turned him from typical tourist to suspected terrorist: He carried his pistol with him to New York.

Condo Owners Irked Over Proposed Paid Parking Plan

OCEAN CITY – It’s deja vu for condominium owners on 146th Street as a paid parking battle they thought was won a few years ago has resurfaced.

Last Friday the Mayor and City Council voted to implement paid parking in several new areas around town, including the ocean block of 146th Street. After reading about the decision through this publication’s electronic news service, Ocean Place Condominium Association President of Board of Directors Ron Deacon reached out to The Dispatch and the Mayor and City Council to express his dismay.

“We are one of only a few streets that will have paid parking. I have never understood why a city government decides to implement a policy that significantly affects some of its taxpayers yet does not feel the need to let them know ahead of time or give them an opportunity to express their view. But apparently that does happen in Ocean City. Thank goodness other jurisdictions treat their taxpayers somewhat better,” Deacon wrote in a letter to the council. “We again oppose this action for several reasons. We will attend a council meeting and will do everything we can to reverse this decision. We believe that before this decision was made that input from nearby residents would have been very helpful. I would hope that the desire for revenue would not encourage the city government to ignore the wellbeing of a small group of its citizens.”

Maryland, Virginia Road Plans Rely On Congress To Avoid Higher Gas Taxes

Maryland and Virginia are both counting on new taxes on Internet sales, being voted on by Congress, to keep prices lower at the gas pump.

The Marketplace Fairness Act is expected to sail through the U.S. Senate in a vote planned for May 6, but it faces an uncertain future in the House, where Republicans are wary about any perceived tax increases.

The two states passed plans to fund new transportation projects in the states' recent legislative sessions, and both rely on the passage of the Internet sales tax to collect additional revenue.

Weekend Inlet Parking Rates Increased; New Paid Parking Areas Identified In Resort

OCEAN CITY – During a budget wrap-up session last Friday, discussion over alternative revenues continued with the City Council voting to install new paid parking downtown and on 49th, 131st and 146th streets as well as increasing the weekend rate for the Inlet Parking Lot.

A couple of weeks ago, City Engineer Terry McGean went through the different areas of town that are potential to install Cale machines, or paid parking, to offer alternative revenues in attempts to close the budget gap.

To develop a clearer picture, McGean returned on Friday breaking down the potential streets to begin paid parking. He began with the west side of Philadelphia Ave. from South 1st Street to North Division St., which totals 55 spaces and $35,000 in estimated new revenue. The east side of Philadelphia Ave. in this area was metered a few years back, but the council at that time decided to leave the west side free for downtown employees.

USEFUL IDIOTS

What the hell are they teaching our kids in high school? They fill their brains full of green energy and global warming crap, but they can’t manage to teach them the basics about economics. They learn about the glories of diversity, but not about compounding interest on credit card debt? Only 43% of all high school students even have a proficient or better understanding of economics. The politically correct MSM gives their propaganda version of the report. I opened the report to get a few more facts. Here are a few tidbits:

The percentage of proficients students in private schools was 62%.

The percentage of proficient students in government run public schools was 41%.

The percentage of below basic (dullards/retards) in government public schools was 19% versus 9% in private schools.

The percentage of white and asian students that were proficient totaled 53% and 52% respectively. Only 11% and 15% were below basic.

The percentage of black students that were proficient totaled 17%, while the percentage below basic totaled 39%. (I’m racist for pointing this out. It is nowhere to be seen in the MSM articles)

The percentage of boys that were proficient was 47% versus 38% of girls.

Part of 9/11 Plane's Landing Gear Found in NYC

NEW YORK (AP) — A 5-foot-tall piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the planes destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks has been discovered wedged between a mosque site and another building near the World Trade Center.

The part includes a clearly visible Boeing identification number, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said Friday. The twisted, rusted metal part has cables and levers on it and is about 3 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep.

The piece of equipment was discovered Wednesday by surveyors inspecting the lower Manhattan site of a planned Islamic community center, at 51 Park Place, on behalf of the building's owner, police said. The inspectors called 911, and police secured the scene, documenting it with photos.

How The Boston Bombing Is Already Being Exploited To Introduce Tyranny

I have no personal experience in the business of false flag terrorism, but I imagine that engineering a successfully staged terror attack to be blamed on innocent or semi-innocent parties with the goal of psychologically manipulating a population requires that one also be an accomplished storyteller. It demands an avid imagination and an organized sense of foresight. And, most of all, it requires a consistency of narrative. Without consistency, the audience’s ability to suspend its disbelief is damaged, and they become disconnected from the fantasy being portrayed.

If I were the “writer” behind the “story” of the Boston Marathon Bombing, I would consider my efforts an abject failure.

The narrative of the event has changed multiple times in only a few days, following a hailstorm of conflicting observations from the government and the establishment-run media. The “villain” of the original plotline was clearly meant to be “rightwing extremism” as numerous mainstream talking heads, led by federal agency inferences, began repeating the “homegrown right wing terrorist” meme everywhere. This meme was partly abandoned after the alternative media and the Liberty Movement began its own investigation, revealing a large federal presence on the scene, including military Civil Support Teams often tied to the DHS and Northcom, as well as the witnesses who observed what on-scene officials called “training exercises” during the marathon. I have no doubt that these citizen investigations forced the establishment to change the direction of their crime tale, and use Plan B patsies instead. This, however, complicated the momentum of the fiction, and created even more questions.

SMAG Drill

On Thursday, April 25, 2013 the Salisbury Mutual Assistance Group (SMAG) participated in the United States Coast Guard’s 2013 PREP EXERCISE. The purpose of this exercise is to assure total preparedness, quick response, and successful remediation and clean-up of a release of any type of petroleum product into the Wicomico River.

As part of this simulation, containment boom was deployed along the Wicomico River from approximately 9:00 a.m. until noon. Public agencies participating in the event included: The Maryland Department of the Environment, United States Coast Guard Sector-Baltimore, Maryland Natural Resources Police, Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, The City of Salisbury Police Department, Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services, and The City of Salisbury Fire Department - Hazmat Unit. These agencies conducted this exercise in conjunction with Cato Gas & Oil Company, Delmarva Oil, Blackwater Maryland Terminal, and Miller Environmental.

Various federal, state, and local agencies executed the Area Contingency Plan (ACP) in order to identify proper booming strategies as set forth in the plan. Boom, is the most common equipment used for controlling oil spilled into a body of water. Booms are used to contain hazardous liquids and to prevent spreading. Following containment, three distinct approaches can be taken to physically remove the oil from the water. These are the use of mechanical skimmers, the use of sorbent material, and manual removal by a coordinated cleanup work force.

A simulated diesel fuel spill took place on the Wicomico River, utilizing various Facility Response Plans maintained by the oil terminals. Containment booms were deployed as needed to contain/deflect the “spill” and to prevent contamination of the environmentally sensitive areas along the Wicomico River.

A Command Post was established and utilized the Incident Command System to coordinate the activities of the various agencies and companies listed above. After implementing the response plans to achieve the successful objectives of the drill, the participants held an in-depth review and analysis of the events in order to assure a coordinated and successful response to a spill scenario on the Wicomico River.

MOTHER JONES: 'RIGHT-WING EXTREMISM' KILLED MORE SINCE 9/11 THAN ISLAMIC TERROR

On Wednesday, Mother Jones ran an article making a shocking claim: more Americans have been killed by conservative terrorists than by Islamic terrorists since September 11, 2001. “While America has been fixated on the threat of Islamic terrorism for more than a decade, all but a few domestic terror plots have failed,” the article explained. “Between September 11, 2001, and the end of 2012, there were no successful bomb plots by jihadist terrorists in the United States …. [R]ight-wing extremists killed 29 people during those 11 years.”

But is it true?

The Mother Jones piece is based on a study by the New America Foundation and Syracuse University’s Maxwell School. But that study routinely labels non-right-wing murderers right-wingers, and labels basic crimes involving murder “terrorist attacks.”

Here is their complete list of “rightwing terrorist attacks,” with number of killed in parentheses:

O’MALLEY ADDRESSES TEL AVIV STOCK EXCHANGE

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY ADDRESSES TEL AVIV STOCK EXCHANGE, MEETS WITH EXECUTIVES OF TEVA PHARMACEUTICALS

ANNAPOLIS, MD
– Leading a delegation of more than 30 Maryland business, community and higher education leaders on an eight-day trade mission to Israel and Jordan, Governor Martin O’Malley today addressed investors at the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE) and held meetings with Israeli and U.S. diplomatic officials, executives of a major pharmaceutical company and members of the Knesset, Israel’s legislative body. At the stock exchange, Governor O’Malley opened the day’s trading session, then spoke to investors about Maryland’s economy and the State’s leadership in innovation, entrepreneurship and high-tech sectors like the biotechnology, green energy, cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing.

“In addition to forging strong cultural bonds, our close relationship with Israel has opened the door for trade and investment as we work together toward a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future for our children,” said Governor O’Malley. “Maryland’s strategy of investing in education, innovation and the industries that are creating the technologies and jobs of tomorrow is one that we share with Israel. It was an honor to speak to the investors and executives at the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, and I look forward to working closely with many of them in the future.”

Following the visit at the stock exchange, Governor O’Malley and members of his cabinet traveled to Petach Tikva in Tel Aviv’s northern suburbs to meet with executives of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., including CEO Dr. Jeremy Levin and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jon Isaacsohn. They discussed the company’s growing facility in Maryland. Teva, the world’s largest producer of generic drugs, acquired CoGenesys of Maryland, a spinoff of Human Genome Sciences, for $400 million in January 2007. The facility in Rockville has grown to more than 80 employees.

Governor O’Malley also met with Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Rabbi Dov Lipman, a member of the Knesset. Both are members of the liberal Yesh Atid (“There is a Future”) Party. Founded by Minister Lapid in April 2012, Yesh Atid became the second-largest party in the Knesset after the elections in January, the first elections in which the party took part. A native of Silver Spring, Rabbi Lipman and Governor O’Malley are honorary co-chairs of the newly formed Maryland/Israel Advisory Board, which is charged with developing business opportunities that will jointly benefit both communities, and also helping to connect Maryland and Israeli business and community leaders for potential partnerships. Earlier today, Governor O’Malley discussed Israeli diplomacy and international relations with Ambassador Jeremy Issacharoff, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Governor closed out the day with a meeting with the U.S. Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro to discuss the trade mission, Maryland’s activities in Israel and U.S.-Israeli relations. Following the meeting, Ambassador Shapiro hosted a reception for more than 100 guests, including the Maryland delegation and Israeli business executives who conduct business in the State or are considering establishing a presence.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 4-27-13

African-American History in Salisbury – Part 2

A continuance of the history of African-American owned businesses in Salisbury leads us to the following businesses and persons.

Cook’s Cab Company

Started in the 1930’s, R. E. Cook operated the C. C. Taxi Cab Service until at least 1957. By that year, he also listed himself as an electrical contractor. A ruler was a Christmas give-a-way in 1940 and shows a phone number of 355 and an address as Main and Lake Sts. By 1950, the phone number had changed to 4500 and gave his address as 503 W. Main St. The address is now 405 W. Main St., due to the street number changes enacted by the City in October, 1952. A token from the late 1940’s is good for “One 25c Fare”. Obviously, he had more than one minted, but this is the only one to have ever surfaced..

With the addition of the extended prefix by the phone company, his phone number had changed to PI9-4500 in the 1957 City Directory and his address had changed to 110 Small St.

Jack Birckhead

A business card and a ticket to the Daughter Elks Ball show that Jack Birckhead had an orchestra. This evolved from his father, George Birckhead, having the most popular band in Salisbury in the 1920’s. Referencing a passbook from the Houston Savings Bank, the depositor, Mamie Birckhead, was probably the wife of George Birckhead since both of them are listed as living at 1707 N. Division St. The property is now two addresses, 1007 and 1009 N. Division St. Their son was Jack and he lived at the N. Division St. address all his life. He also worked for Albert L. Disharoon, the contractor, for nearly 50 years.

James Weatherly

One of the most entrepreneurial figures in the Lake St. area of Salisbury was Jim Weatherly. The first listing for a Weatherly is in the 1940 City Directory. There is a Weatherly’s Pool Room listed on Lake St., although no reference is made that it was owned by Jim Weatherly. As you can see in post cards, Jim Weatherly had at least two more businesses before 1950. Weatherly’s Auditorium and the Postal Card both had addresses of 219 Lake St. and phone numbers of 2846-J, which clearly dates them before 1950. By 1950, from material excerpted from the 1950 telephone book, his phone number had changed to 2-1410 (with no mention of the Pioneer prefix). The address was still 219 Lake St. That address was changed to 223 Lake St. in October, 1952 by the City. The entire block has been razed and no businesses on the East side of Lake St. remain.

A Great Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor:

So many letter writers have based their  arguments on how this land is made up of  immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we  should tear down the Statue of Liberty because the  people now in question aren't being treated the  same as those who passed through Ellis Island and  other ports of entry.

Maybe we  should turn to our history books and point out to  people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not  willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any  longer.

Back  in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of  Europe to come to the United States, people had to  get off a ship and stand in a long line in New  York and be documented.
Some  would even get down on their hands and knees and  kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the  laws and support their new country in good and bad  times.

They  made learning English  a primary rule in  their new American households and some even  changed their names to blend in with their new  home.

They  had waved good bye to their birth place to give  their children a new life and did everything in  their power to help their children assimilate into  one culture.

Nothing  was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare,  no labor laws to protect them. All they had were  the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with  them to trade for a future of prosperity.

Most of their children came of age  when World War II broke out. My father fought  alongside men whose parents had come straight over  from Germany, Italy, France and Japan.

None  of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any  thought about what country their parents had come  from. They were Americans fighting Hitler,  Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were  defending the United States of America as one  people.

When we liberated France,  no one in those villages was looking for the  French-American or the German American or the  Irish American.  The people of France saw  only Americans. And we carried one flag that  represented one country.

Not  one of those immigrant sons would have thought  about picking up another country's flag and waving  it to represent who they were.

It  would have been a disgrace to their parents who  had sacrificed so much to be here. These  immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an  American. They stirred the melting pot into one  red, white and blue bowl.

And here  we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the  same rights and privileges. Only they want to  achieve it by playing with a different set of  rules, one that includes the entitlement card and  a guarantee of being faithful to their mother  country.

I'm  sorry, that's not what being an American is all  about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on  Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better  than that for all the toil, hard work and  sacrifice in raising future generations to create  a land that has become a beacon for those legally  searching for a better life. I think they would be  appalled that they are being used as an example by  those waving foreign country flags.

And for that suggestion about taking down the  Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the  citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I  wouldn't start talking about dismantling the  United States just yet.

WANTED: YOUR UNUSED OR EXPIRED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS NATIONAL TAKE BACK INITIATIVE, APRIL 27, 2013

The Maryland State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration are partnering to give Marylanders a way to turn in their unwanted or expired prescription drugs before they fall into the wrong hands.
In response to the rising concern about prescription abuse, Maryland State Police barracks throughout the state will become collection stations for the safe disposal of these medications, during the National Take Back Initiative, April 27, 2013 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. This Take Back initiative is a great opportunity for all to safely dispose of their unused or expired medications, before they fall into the wrong hands.
The non-medical use of prescription drugs is second only to the use of marijuana as the most commonly used drug in America.
