Maryland man gets 10 years in prison for stealing 10 cigarette packs he tried to sell for cash, gas

A Maryland man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for stealing 10 packs of cigarettes during New Year's Day in 2018 from a Wicomico County gas station.

John Edward Lowe, 36, of Mardela Springs, Maryland, was sentenced Thursday in Wicomico County Court by Judge Kathleen L. Beckstead after he was convicted in November of robbery and second-degree assault in the crime.

On the morning of New Year's Day, Lowe had threatened a clerk opening the Food Rite store in Hebron, Maryland. He demanded that the clerk hand over cash.

Lowe tried to have the clerk open the register, but he then attempted to open it himself, according to a release from the Wicomico County State Attorney's office.

After unsuccessfully trying to pry the cash register open, he fled the establishment with about 10 packs of cigarettes.

Maryland certifies country's first new socialist party in decades

Maryland has certified a socialist party to run candidates in the next two election cycles, in what is being described as the country's first new socialist party in four decades.

The party, called Bread and Roses, identifies itself as an alternative to the two-party system. With the certification, that alternative can now put up candidates for local, state and national elections -- including the presidential race -- in 2020 and 2022.

“It’s a new kind of socialism,” the founder, University of Maryland professor Jerome Segal, told Fox News.

Segal last year ran unsuccessfully as a socialist in the Democratic Party’s primary against incumbent Sen. Ben Cardin. He lost, left the Democratic Party -- and won certification from the state Board of Elections for this new effort after submitting a petition with more than 10,000 signatures.

“It is believed that the new party is the first democratic socialist party to be established in the United States in the last four decades,” a Bread and Roses press release said.

The establishment is the latest example of socialism – not too long ago a loaded term that political candidates and leaders avoided at all costs – becoming more widely accepted on the left, with mainstream Democratic candidates tapping into the movement and some of its favored policies to build support.

Senior Democrat Congressman Calls for Banning Teens From Wearing MAGA Hats

Rep. John Yarmuth, a senior Democrat Congressman from Lexington, Kentucky is calling for teenagers to be banned from wearing pro-Trump Make America Great Again hats, a blatant violation of the First Amendment.

Yarmuth called for the MAGA hat ban in the context of an incident Friday involving MAGA hat wearing Kentucky high school students from nearby Covington that took place in Washington, D.C., where the students, in town for March for Life, were confronted by a Native American activist there for an Indigenous People’s Rally, Nathan Phillips, who loudly banged a drum and chanted an Indian language song without explaining to the students what he was doing.

Initial reports falsely accused the students of being racist and the aggressors in the incident. However, videos soon surfaced showing it was Phillips who was the aggressor and it was his fellow Native American activists who hurled racist invective against the students.

Rep. Ilhan Omar Spreads Fake News with Attack on Covington Students

Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is getting slammed on social media for attacking the Covington Catholic students Tuesday night, even after media outlets admitted to misreporting the viral encounter between the students and the Native American elder.

Omar claimed in a now-deleted tweet Tuesday night that Covington student Nick Sandmann and his friends had taunted black protesters and yelled racist epithets at the men before Native American activist Nathan Phillips approached them, even though video evidence of the encounter showed the black protesters hurling insults at the boys.

In Omar’s version of history, the Covington students said, “It’s not rape if you enjoy it.” While someone did film a person saying that phrase in D.C. that day, the person caught on tape was not a student from Covington Catholic.

She also claimed: “They were taunting five black men before they surrounded Phillips and led racist chants.” All three of these claims are false.

CNN’s Angela Rye Compares MAGA Hat to KKK Hood: I’m ‘So Triggered’ by the ‘Hatred’ It Represents

CNN commentator Angela Rye said she was "triggered" by Make America Great Again hats during a Tuesday night appearance on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time."

Rye's comment came during a discussion about Nick Sandmann and the Covington Catholic high school students who were involved in an incident with a Native American activist Nathan Phillips that went viral on Saturday. While wearing a MAGA hat, Sandmann stood still as Phillips played a drum in his face, and Rye told anchor Chris Cuomo that she could not get over the symbolism of the student's hat.

"Forget Donald Trump for a moment, and just think about that symbol of that red hat," she said. "When I see the Make America Great Again hat now, Chris, I am triggered. I'm so triggered."

Rye went on to tell fellow CNN contributor Andre Bauer that his support for Trump puts a strain on their friendship, since she sees red hats as equivalent to the hoods of the Ku Klux Klan.

"I don't agree with you on this last point, but this Make America Great Again hat is just as maddening and frustrating and triggering for me to look at as a KKK hood," she said. "That is the type of hatred that his policies represent..."

Family: Police covering up Eastern Shore man's death

GREENSBORO, Md. — An Eastern Shore family is claiming multiple law enforcement agencies are covering up a man's death.

Several family members gathered outside the New Beginning United Methodist Church in Caroline County very emotional, sad and angry over the death of brother, cousin and son, Anton Black.

Black, 19, died Sept. 15, 2018, during an altercation with Greensboro police.

"They lynched my son. They lynched him. They didn't do it with a rope, they did it with their arms. No reason for that. He was 150 pounds and they killed him," said Black's father, Antone Black.

According to Maryland State Police, which took over the investigation, police officers approached Anton Black after a report of a possible kidnapping involving a 12-year-old boy.

According to the police report, Anton Black was dragging the boy, and when asked if they were related, the boy said no.

Greensboro police Officer Thomas Webster is the at the center of the case. The Caroline County State's Attorney's Office released on Wednesday a written timeline of Webster's body-worn camera video.

Lady Gaga to Mike Pence: 'You're the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian'

Lady Gaga had a message for Vice President Mike Pence at her Las Vegas concert over the weekend, calling him the “worst representation” of Christianity.

“And to Mike Pence who thinks that it’s acceptable that his wife works at a school that bans LGBTQ. You are wrong,” the singer said at Las Vegas’ Park MGM to a crowd of cheering fans.

Her criticism was in reference to Mr. Pence’s wife, Karen, who recently accepted a job at a Christian school in northern Virginia that does not enroll LGBTQ students. Mr. Pence has defended his wife’s employment, calling the media’s attacks on Christian education “deeply offensive.”

Lady Gaga on Saturday called Mr. Pence’s comments a disgrace.

“You said we should not discriminate against Christianity? You are the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian,” she said. “I am a Christian woman, and what I do know about Christianity is that we bear no prejudice and everybody is welcome. So you can take all that disgrace, Mr. Pence, and look yourself in the mirror and you’ll find it right there.”

House Appropriations Chair Admits Democrats Have 'No Consensus' on How to Secure Border

Rep. Nita Lowey (D., N.Y.) on Thursday admitted Democrats have "no consensus" on how to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

Lowey, the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee, appeared on MSNBC to discuss the government shutdown and highlight Democrats' push to fund the rest of the government before negotiating border security funding.

"There's a new offer that will be coming from the Democrats [that includes] potentially up to $5.7 billion or more for border security, including funding for a smart wall. Can you tell us exactly what a smart wall is?" Host Katy Tur asked.

Lowey said the proposal that Tur mentioned was "interesting" but said there was "no consensus" currently. She added, "When the government is open, we will work together, hopefully in a bipartisan way. And I want you to know as an appropriator, I always work across the aisle. And then we'll come up with a plan that makes sense."
