How Long Can a State Go Without Repairing Roads and Bridges?

Mississippi’s increasingly unreliable infrastructure -- its crumbling roads and hundreds of deteriorating bridges that have been closed or weight-limited -- is straining the state’s businesses and local governments. It’s no wonder, then, that they, along with transportation advocates and their allies, have pressed the legislature to do something about it. Yet year after year, lawmakers in Jackson have come up empty-handed.

This year was no different, even though lawmakers came tantalizingly close to a road improvement package. A week or so after they failed to pass a fix-up plan, Gov. Phil Bryant announced that the state Transportation Department would immediately shut down 83 locally owned bridges. Federal inspectors had found that the bridges -- most of which were built with timber parts and located in rural areas -- were deficient and unsafe for vehicular traffic. Since then, more bridges have been added to the list. All told, some 500 across the state are out of service.

“It is probably the No. 1 problem the citizens are talking about today,” says state Sen. Willie Simmons, a Democrat who chairs the chamber’s Highways and Transportation Committee. Two of the counties in Simmons’ Mississippi Delta district shut down more than 30 bridges each. Those closures can reroute residents on 40- to 50-mile detours, and they can prevent firefighters and paramedics from getting to residents quickly. “Everybody agrees that we have a crisis, and it needs to be addressed,” Simmons says. “The problem is, we need to find the ways and means to pay for it.”

8 Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure Without Medication

Over 70 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure and a further 30 percent have pre-hypertension, making this condition extremely crucial to control.

“While health is important at any age, chronic insults to the arteries such as elevated blood pressure can certainly take their toll over time leading to increased risk for heart disease,” says Dr. Felicia Stoler, MS, RD., an expert consultant in healthy living who specializes in integrating behavior and nutritional modification to influence positive health outcomes.

“It’s important to schedule regular doctors visits especially if you know you have a genetic predisposition to hypertension and monitor your blood pressure regularly with a home device,” she tells Newsmax Health.

While physicians are quick to prescribe medication to lower blood pressure, Dr. Stoler cautions that any medication can have side effects.

“Some people taking ACE inhibitors, for example, can have a dry cough while others suffer from dizziness and have an upset stomach. It’s important to try natural remedies first before diving into drugs.”

Stoler warns that high blood pressure is often called “the silent killer” because it rarely shows symptoms, so monitoring your numbers regularly can be life saving. According to the American Heart Association, ideal blood pressure should be less than 120/80.

Here are some suggestions on how to lower or stabilize hypertension naturally:

City of Shawnee Apologizes over Parade

The city of Shawnee, Kansas, apologized to onlookers after Kansas Secretary of State and GOP gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach rode in a jeep beside a replica .50 caliber rifle.

Kobach was taking part in a Johnston County parade on Saturday morning.

The Kansas City Star reports that Kobach rode in a jeep on which a replica .50 caliber rifle was mounted.

Shawnee Community Christian Church pastor Johnny Lewis said, “It was pretty shocking. There were audible gasps from the folks we were sitting by.” The Star indicates Lewis worried that kids watching the parade thought “they might be victims of a school shooting."

A Kaboch spokesperson Danedri Herbert responded to the criticism, saying, “The gun is a replica,” and that “the Secretary says those who use the excuse of school violence to restrict the right to bear arms are deeply misguided.."

The city of Shawnee apologized for Kobach’s appearance with the replica firearm, saying, “We want to apologize for the concern and frustration involved with Mr. Kris Kobach’s parade entry at the Old Shawnee Days Parade on Saturday, June 2, 2018. In no way does this or any parade entry or float directly reflect the views and values of the City, the Old Shawnee Days Board or the Old Shawnee Days Society.”

Brian Mark Weber: Pleading for Criminal Justice Reform

Backed by Trump, the House passed the First Step Act, but opposition remains entrenched.

The prison population in the United States is exploding.

But this burgeoning population isn’t merely the result of cleaning our streets of violent offenders; it’s also due to overzealous prosecutors eager to tout their toughness in America’s war on crime.

Consequently, the United States has 5% of the world’s population and 25% of its incarcerated people, according to National Review’s Conrad Black. “The American conviction rate of nearly 99 percent, 97 percent without a trial,” says Black, is the result of a plea-bargain system that places the U.S. “in criminal-justice matters from the category of its socioeconomic and democratic peer countries and places it, in matters of criminal procedure and conviction rates, disgracefully among the totalitarian states.”

Plea-bargaining is one of the primary reasons why the prison population has risen so dramatically in recent decades. The process gives prosecutors “broad, opaque powers” according to Dylan Walsh at The Atlantic.

Attorney General’s Statement on EPA’s Proposal to Deny Maryland’s 126 Petition

BALTIMORE, MD - Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today released the following statement in response to the EPA’s proposal to deny Maryland’s petition under section 126 of the Clean Air Act:

“It is clear and undeniable that emissions from power plants in surrounding states pollute Maryland’s air and violate the law. The EPA has failed to stop these violations and has failed to protect Marylanders from the harm of breathing polluted air. Requiring power plants to implement common sense standards to reduce harmful emissions is the responsibility of the EPA. Time and time again, it has failed to do its job. Over the next few weeks, my office will consider all options to protect the health of our environment and of our citizens.”

The petition filed in November 2016 under Section 126 of the Clean Air Act, requested the EPA to issue a finding that power plants located in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are in violation of the “good neighbor provision” of the Clean Air Act. The petition alleged that nitrogen oxides emitted by these power plants impede Maryland’s efforts to attain and maintain federal health-based air quality standards.

DNA for Sale: Ancestry wants your spit, your DNA and your trust. Should you give them all 3?

It markets its DNA kits with promises that tug at the heartstrings: Discover ancestors. Strengthen family ties. Understand your life.

Aided by venture capital and a flood of savvy marketing, Ancestry LLC has grown to become the world’s largest DNA testing conglomerate. Since 2012, it has lured more than 5 million people to spit into tubes and add their genetic code to the world’s largest private database of DNA. It has also banked away the world’s largest collection of human spittle, numbering in the hundreds of gallons.

In the age of Facebook and Google, consumers seem comfortable surrendering their personal information to corporations that aggregate it and monetize it. But Ancestry and other DNA testing companies have added an audacious tweak: Consumers are now paying to hand over their genetic code, their most sensitive individual identifier, to companies that could monetize it far into the future.

Ancestry officials say they have state-of-the-art systems to prevent hacking and security breaches. So far the company has sidestepped privacy scandals that tripped up companies like Facebook, which allowed a political data firm, Cambridge Analytica, to access data from 50 million customers, or government agencies like the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, which a few years ago exposed more than a million personnel records and security clearance data to hackers.

But a three-month review by McClatchy, including visits to Ancestry’s headquarters and a main testing lab, reveals a pattern of breached promises to customers, security concerns and inflated marketing pledges that could give consumers some pause:

Nate Jackson: Record Wage Increases, Record-Low Unemployment

A good economy is bad for Democrats, and today brings more good economic news.

As we noted last month, a good economy is bad for Democrats. And we got another load of good economic news this morning, regardless of Leftmedia spin.

First up, The Wall Street Journal’s James Freeman writes, “The number of small companies raising wages hit a record high in the U.S. this month. That’s according to the latest National Federation of Independent Business employment survey. … A full 35% of owners of small firms report increasing labor compensation, the highest percentage since NFIB started asking about it in 1986.” That trend could get even better, as Freeman notes that “businesses are ramping up spending on the tools that make their workers more productive and therefore able to command higher wages.”

Facebook Gave Device Makers Deep Access to Data on Users and Friends

As Facebook sought to become the world’s dominant social media service, it struck agreements allowing phone and other device makers access to vast amounts of its users’ personal information.

Facebook has reached data-sharing partnerships with at least 60 device makers — including Apple, Amazon, BlackBerry, Microsoft and Samsung — over the last decade, starting before Facebook apps were widely available on smartphones, company officials said. The deals allowed Facebook to expand its reach and let device makers offer customers popular features of the social network, such as messaging, “like” buttons and address books.

But the partnerships, whose scope has not previously been reported, raise concerns about the company’s privacy protections and compliance with a 2011 consent decree with the Federal Trade Commission. Facebook allowed the device companies access to the data of users’ friends without their explicit consent, even after declaring that it would no longer share such information with outsiders. Some device makers could retrieve personal information even from users’ friends who believed they had barred any sharing, The New York Times found.

New Jersey Abruptly Freezes Spending As It Nears Financial Disaster

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy's administration ordered an immediate halt to state spending and hiring, because of what NJ.com describes as "an esoteric accounting maneuver caught up in charged state budget talks."

State Treasurer Elizabeth Muoio on Friday ordered the immediate hold on both spending and hiring "until further notice," according to a news release. -NJ.com

"We have to reserve all available resources in order to ensure we close out the general fund in a positive position," said Muoio.

Is America's Racial Divide Permanent?

For Roseanne Barr, star of ABC’s hit show “Roseanne,” there would be no appeal. When her tweet hit, she was gone.

“Roseanne’s Twitter statement, is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show,” declaimed Channing Dungey, the black president of ABC Entertainment.

Targeting Valerie Jarrett, a confidante and aide of President Barack Obama, Roseanne had tweeted: If the “muslim brotherhood & the planet of the apes had a baby=vj.”

Offensive, juvenile, crude, but was that not pretty much the job description ABC had in mind for the role of Roseanne in the show?

Roseanne also tweeted that George Soros, 87-year-old radical-liberal billionaire, had been a Nazi “who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps and stole their wealth.”

The Soros slur seems far more savage than the dumb racial joke about Jarrett, but it was the latter that got Roseanne canned.

Her firing came the same day that 175,000 employees of 8,000 Starbucks’s stores were undergoing four hours of instruction to heighten their racial sensitivities.

Rick Santorum claims Obama 'exacerbated racism' long before Trump

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., claimed Sunday that Barack Obama "exacerbated racism" by aligning himself with anti-police activists whenever people of color were targeted by law enforcement during his presidency.

Santorum made the comment during a CNN segment about President Trump's success in 2016, and whether he capitalized on Republican backlash to the first African-American president.

"You elect the first black president and there was an uproar. ... What Donald Trump did was he tapped into it," Karine Jean-Pierre, a spokeswoman for the progressive group Move On, said during the segment.

If The Economy Is So Great, Why Are 78 Million Americans Hustling For Dimes?

Even though the official unemployment rate has dropped to a 18-year low of 3.8%, the economy is still broken for a great number of Americans who are living a precarious existence - nearly invisible and economically marginalized.

For millions of Americans, the security and income of a steady 9-to-5 job is as far out of reach as it was during the worst of the Great Recession. Some, of course, have simply given up on finding any job, discouraged about their employment prospects after so many years out of work.

Many others have resorted to scrambling for a buck here and a buck there, cobbling together a patchwork of irregular hours and side hustles.

Caught On Video: FBI Agent Accidentally Shoots Patron At Denver Bar After Busting Move

Moscow mules and all sorts of handcrafted spirits were heavily flowing at the Mile High Spirits Distillery and Tasting Bar in Denver, Colorado, on Saturday, when an off-duty FBI agent accidentally shot a bar patron

Denver police responded to the bar in the Lower Downtown district of Denver for an accidental shooting at 12:45 a.m. on Saturday. Police said the FBI agent was dancing at the bar when his firearm dislodged from its waistband holster and dropped onto the floor.

When the agent picked up the gun, “an unintended discharge occurred,” striking a patron inside the club in the lower leg. "The victim was transported to the hospital with a good prognosis," Denver police said.

A video clip obtained by Denver 7, shows the reckless agent busting out dance moves in front of a dozen or more bar goers. The agent then executed a backflip, however, during the bizarre dance move, his gun ejected out of the man’s holster onto the floor. Immediately the agent lunges forward to secure the weapon, but as he picks it up the gun went off.

The story involves a president facing impeachment, which led to President Clinton giving his current opinion on the medi and his view on the ongoing Russian Investigation conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller. Mo Rocca asked point blank, "Do you think that the press has been fair to President Trump?"

"I think they have tried by and large to cover this investigation based on the facts," Mr. Clinton said. "I think if the roles were reversed – now, this is me just talking, but it's based on my experience! – I think if it were a Democratic president, and these facts were present, most people I know in Washington believe impeachment hearings would have begun already," the 42nd president replied.

"If there were a Democrat in power right now?" Rocca asked his guests

"Yes. And most people I know believe that the press would have been that hard, or harder. But these are serious issues," Clinton added.

Audit: 60 Percent of U.S. Military ‘Train and Equip’ Projects Failed

Congress’s watchdog arm this week raised questions on how effectively the Pentagon and U.S. State Department are overseeing projects linked to multi-billion dollar Global Train and Equip program primarily intended to improve counterterrorism capabilities for U.S. partner nations like Jordan, Niger, and Afghanistan.

In an audit released on Wednesday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that only eight (about 40 percent) of 21 Global Train and Equip projects undertaken in 2016 and 2017 at the cost of nearly $2 billion resulted in improved capabilities for aid recipient forces.

The GAO cited proposal design shortfalls, equipment suitability and procurement problems, partner nation failings, and staffing shortages as the reason for the project failures.

3-month review shows how New York City's failure to honor immigration detainers leads to hundreds of dangerous criminals released

NEW YORK — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in New York conducted a three-month review of detainers lodged with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and New York Department of Corrections (NYDOC) to determine the type of criminal aliens who have been released from custody without ICE being notified. Detainers are ICE’s request to a local law enforcement agency to notify ICE when an alien in custody will be released.

Within the three months, from January to mid-April this year, ICE prepared more than 440 detainers against aliens booked by NYPD or NYDOC. Nearly 40 individuals who were released from custody, reoffended and were again arrested for crimes by local law enforcement officers.

“In just three months, more than three dozen criminal aliens were released from local custody. Simply put, the politics and rhetoric in this city are putting its own communities at an unnecessary risk,” said Scott Mechowski, acting field office director for the ERO New York. “ICE has no choice but to continue to conduct at-large arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites, wasting valuable resources on criminal aliens who could be securely turned over to ICE custody at jails and prisons. However, ICE remains committed to its public safety mission and will continue to enforce our nation’s immigration laws.”

Below are some examples of individuals arrested and released who reoffended within the three-month period:

In Leaked Letter, Trump's Lawyers Tell Mueller To Go Pound Sand

A 20-page confidential letter from President Trump's legal team leaked to the New York Times argues that President Trump could not have obstructed justice at any point during his presidency due to his Constitutional authority, and that he cannot be compelled to testify in front of Special Counsel Robert Mueller due to his Constitutional powers as President.

The letter, crafted by Trump's legal team, reveals that the White House has been waging a quiet campaign for several months to prevent Mueller from trying to subpoena the president - contending that because the Constitution empowers him to "if he wished, terminate the inquiry, or even exercise his power to pardon," Trump could not have illegally obstucted any aspect of the investigation into potential collusion between his campaign and Russia during the 2016 US election.

Mr. Trump’s defense is a wide-ranging interpretation of presidential power. In saying he has the authority to end a law enforcement inquiry or pardon people, his lawyers ambiguously left open the possibility that they were referring only to the investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael T. Flynn, which he is accused of pressuring the F.B.I. to drop — or perhaps the one Mr. Mueller is pursuing into Mr. Trump himself as well.

Mr. Dowd and Mr. Sekulow outlined 16 areas they said the special counsel was scrutinizing as part of the obstruction investigation, including the firings of Mr. Comey and of Mr. Flynn, and the president’s reaction to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s recusal from the Russia investigation. -NYT

North Korea Gets Relief Only When It Gives Up Nukes, Mattis Says

North Korea will get relief from international sanctions only when it has shown irreversible moves toward de-nuclearization, U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said ahead of a summit next week between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Speaking Sunday in Singapore at the start of a meeting with the defense ministers of South Korea and Japan, Mattis warned that “we can anticipate at best a bumpy road to the negotiations."

“As defense ministers we must maintain a strong, collaborative defensive stance so we enable our diplomats to negotiate from a calm position of strength in this critical time,” Mattis said. The ministers were in Singapore for the annual IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, which brings together global defense officials.

He added that all United Nations Security Council resolutions on the regime must stay in place. “North Korea will receive relief only when it demonstrates verifiable and irreversible steps to de-nuclearization,” Mattis said.

House Democrats try to shoot down Trump’s low-yield nukes

A group of House Democrats will take another run this week at stopping President Trump and the Pentagon from developing low-yield nuclear weapons.

The new warhead program would be de-funded by $65 million in the coming year under an amendment to a Department of Energy appropriations bill proposed by Reps. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., John Garamendi, D-Calif., and Dan Kildee, D-Mich.

The spending bill could hit the House floor late this week following Rules Committee meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday to decide if their amendment will get a vote.

The proposal is the latest effort by Democrats on both sides of Capitol Hill to block development of a low-yield nuclear warhead for Trident missiles on Ohio-class submarines and sea-launched cruise missiles.

The weapons are a new initiative in the Pentagon’s Nuclear Posture Review released this year. The administration says the smaller nuclear warheads are needed to deter Russia, which believes it could deter the U.S. by using its own version of the weapons in an “escalate to de-escalate” scenario.

New Italian government vows to create jobs, deport migrants

Italy's new populist leaders commemorated the founding of the Italian republic by attending a pomp-filled military parade Saturday — and then promised to get to work creating jobs and expelling migrants.

"The free ride is over," League leader Matteo Salvini, Italy's new interior minister, warned migrants at a rally in northern Italy. "It's time to pack your bags."

The pledge of mass deportations to come was a reminder that Italy has a staunchly anti-immigrant, right-wing party in its governing coalition — and that the European Union will face a whole new partner governing its fourth-largest economy.

Immigrants with Detainers Released by Sanctuary New York, Commit more Crimes

A report from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reveals the dangers New York City residents are placed in by local officials who ignore immigration detainers and release jailed criminal immigrants to commit more crimes.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers conducted a study of 440 criminal immigrants who were released from jail after ERO placed immigration detainers on the suspects prior to their release. Nearly 40 of those 440 criminal immigrants released from custody re-offended and were re-arrested by local law enforcement for new crimes committed against the citizens they swore to protect, according to information obtained by Breitbart Texas from ICE officials.

“In just three months, more than three dozen criminal aliens were released from local custody,” acting field office director for the ERO New York Scott Mechowski said in a written statement. “Simply put, the politics and rhetoric in this city are putting its own communities at an unnecessary risk.

A Father's request

A man had 3 children (all sons), and spoke to each one before he sent them off to college as follows,

"I feel it's my duty to provide you with the best possible education,
and you do not owe me anything for that. However, I want you to
appreciate it.

"And, although it may sound bizarre, I want you to put $1,000 into my coffin when I die."

His sons became a doctor, a financial planner and a lawyer...and each was very successful, financially.

When their father's time had come, and they saw their father in the
coffin, they remembered his wish.

First, the doctor put 10 newly printed crisp $100 bills onto the chest
of the deceased.

Then, the financial planner also put in $1,000 -- 20 newly-printed,
crisp $50 bills.

Finally, it was the heartbroken lawyer's turn.

He reached into his pocket, took out his checkbook, wrote a check for $3,000, put it into his father's coffin, and took the $2,000 cash.

The lawyer is now running for Congress (possibly in your district).

After Collecting $16 Million in Grants From Housing Department in Obama Era, Liberal Group Sues Agency Now

A liberal advocacy group that has received more than $16 million in federal grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development is now suing the agency after HUD Secretary Ben Carson last month scaled back a regulation it supports.

HUD has given the liberal National Fair Housing Alliance $16.1 million in grants since 2009, according to USAspending.gov, which tracks federal grants and contracts. Under the Trump administration, the organization has received just one grant—$300,000 in March.

“NFHA was awarded roughly $16 million in grants from [fiscal 2009 to fiscal 2016],” Jessica Aiwuyor, associate director of communications for the organization, told The Daily Signal in an emailed statement, insisting that none of it is being used to file its legal action. “NFHA has used zero HUD funds to bring this lawsuit. NFHA uses zero federal dollars to conduct lobbying. We do not have a separate arm for advocacy or lobbying.”

She said that 55 percent of Fair Housing Initiatives Program dollars that HUD has given the group “were passed through to other organizations to fight illegal housing discrimination and educate the public about fair housing laws.”

I never watch television. Its news is a waste of time, with well-groomed, overpaid readers and hokey camera coverage that takes an hour to cover what 10 minutes of a well-written article can better convey. Take the news coverage itself: The EU is falling apart, the talks with North Korea are on and it looks like war will be averted and another country denuclearized, and the Mueller investigation seems more ridiculous than ever. The economy looks so strong that even the NYT’s Neil Irwin conceded words were almost inadequate to describe an economy so strong that it was adding 223,000 jobs in a month, an unemployment rate falling to 3.8 percent, an 18-year low. Contrast this with what this week’s news has been emphasizing.

Compare all the coverage of the royal wedding in Britain with the far more important story that a reporter was secretly jailed for 18 months because he was standing outside a UK courtroom describing the trial of what is euphemistically called men who “groomed” young girls, when the actual description is Muslim men raping and sex trafficking young girls under the averted eyes of the state apparatus tasked with protecting them.

The primary issue is that for years the British state allowed gangs of men to rape thousands of young girls across Britain. For years the police, politicians, Crown Prosecution Service, and every other arm of the state ostensibly dedicated to protecting these girls failed them. As a number of government inquires have concluded, they turned their face away from these girls because they were terrified of the accusations of racism that would come their way if they did address them. They decided it wasn’t worth the aggravation.

After getting many Americans to lie by agreeing that transsexuals are actually the sex they pretend to be, liberals naturally rode down the slippery slope to bathrooms, birth certificates and criminal prosecution of someone using the “wrong” (correct, but politically incorrect) pronoun to describe a transsexual. As Sir Walter Scott said, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive!” Now that tangled web is starting to extend into dating, which is already a complicated subject for many Americans.

After all, if dating were really simple, there wouldn’t be enough of an incel (involuntarily celibate) movement or a MGTOW (Men going their own way) movement to draw anyone’s attention. Then, you toss in feminists, online dating, the #metoo movement, “yes means yes” insanity on college campuses, a high divorce rate, slanted divorce courts, a rapidly fragmenting, tribal culture and a sexual revolution that has only been around for the blink of an eye compared to the length of human history and dating can be a minefield for a lot of people.

Once you get outside of the norms of human behavior, it gets even tougher. For example, just being gay probably makes it difficult to connect and date in large parts of the United States. Rural parts of the country aren’t as friendly as, say, San Francisco and given the tiny percentage of the population that’s gay, there aren’t many people to choose from in those areas. In other words, good luck being a gay man and looking for Mr. Right in Tinytown, Alabama.

Breaking News: The Supreme Court sided with a Colorado baker, voting 7 to 2 in a closely watched case pitting gay rights against claims of religious freedom

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority, relied on narrow grounds, saying a state commission had violated the Constitution’s protection of religious freedom in ruling against the baker, who had refused to create a custom wedding cake for a gay couple.

The Roseanne Barr Double Standard Is Ruining Our Country

“Roseanne Barr is extremely liberal and clinically insane. I’m not a fan just because she’s back on TV doing a show that isn’t 100% hostile to conservatives.” – John Hawkins, March 29, 2018

“I think Roseanne Barr is crackers. Completely out of touch with reality. Hard to tell on the Left these days tho.” – John Hawkins, Aug 7, 2010

I include those quotes just to make it clear that I have never been a fan of Roseanne. I watched her show a handful of times in its initial run and didn’t even bother to watch the wildly popular new incarnation that gathered so much steam because it wasn’t entirely hostile to Trump.

All that being said, I’m not sure that Roseanne didn’t get a raw deal. For one thing, did she even know Valerie Jarrett is black? I do politics for a living and I sure didn’t. I thought she was Iranian. If Roseanne did know she is black, I would assume she was aware that comparing black people to monkeys has long been considered an offensive racist stereotype, but apparently not everyone knows that.

So, did ABC have the RIGHT to fire Roseanne? ABSOLUTELY. This is not a First Amendment issue because we’re talking about a private company that has the right to do what it wants. That being said, it’s hard to understand how Roseanne’s latest dumb comment is any different than her 5 bazillion other dumb comments. I suspect that the real reason she was fired is that she had gotten too popular with the wrong people in ABC’s eyes and so, management was looking for any excuse to get rid of her.

Once again, ABC certainly has a right to get rid of Roseanne if it wants to do it. However, why is it that there so often seems to be a “one mistake and done” standard for people that appeal to conservatives while offensive liberals need a wheelbarrow to carry around all the free passes they get?

Just as an example, as I write this, the big controversy of the day is “comedian” Samantha Bee calling the President’s daughter a “feckless c*nt” on air because Ivanka had the audacity to post a picture hugging her own child. There is no doubt that any host that aimed comments like those about Barack Obama’s daughters when he was in the White House would be out of a job – and that double standard is the real problem.

For Some Breast Cancer Patients, The Chemo Decision Just Got Easier

For many breast cancer patients, one of the most difficult treatment decisions is whether or not to go through chemotherapy.

Now, the choice is getting easier for some patients. A study published Sunday finds that many women with early-stage invasive breast cancer could safely forgo chemotherapy, if they score in the midrange or lower for risk that their cancer will recur, as measured by a commonly used genomic test

The study, published Sunday in the New England Journal of Medicine, finds that patients who fall in the intermediate risk zone do as well with hormone therapy alone as with chemo plus hormone therapy after surgery. "[The findings] are both important and significant, and also practice-changing," says, Dr. José Baselga, a medical oncologist and physician in chief at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, who was not involved with this research. "Basically, it's going to spare a lot of unnecessary chemotherapy in patients with breast cancer."

Kris Kobach: Liberal Outrage over Replica Machine Gun in Parade

Kansas Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Kris Kobach is firing back at liberals who are outraged after he rode in a local parade alongside a replica machine gun.

Kobach, a staunch supporter of pro-American immigration policies, rode in the local Old Shawnee Days Parade in a Jeep wrapped in an American flag and a replica machine gun mounted atop the vehicle, as Breitbart News reported.

In a conversation with Breitbart News, Kobach said the crowd reaction at the parade was positive and cheerful, but the faux machine gun set off a tirade of liberal disgust.

Kobach said he is not apologizing and that the outrage over the replica machine gun is an attack on guns in the U.S., exclusively telling Breitbart News this is “part of the Left’s larger crusade to make guns socially unacceptable.”

“For centuries in America, most parades have featured men with guns—whether it be the color guard carrying the flag, or military equipment old and new,” Kobach told Breitbart News. “The snowflakes now want to erase this American tradition because someone might be offended.”

‘This is Not Our Job’

NATO is not obliged to come to the aid of partner Israel if Iran attacks, secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg revealed, amid rising tensions between the Middle East rivals.

Mr. Stoltenberg told Der Spiegel magazine Saturday that while Israel is an active partner of the U.S.-led alliance, it is not a full member and NATO’s “security guarantee” therefore doesn’t apply to the Jewish state.

Mr. Stoltenberg said NATO isn’t involved in Mideast peace efforts or in conflicts in the region, therefore it is not obliged to come to the aid of any state there. “This is not our job,” he stressed.

“Israel is our partner, but not a member of NATO. The security guarantee of Article 5 does not apply to Israel, he told the magazine.

Pelosi Downplays Positive Jobs Report: 'Strong Employment Numbers Mean Little'

Despite fears of a global trade war, U.S. unemployment numbers hit an 18-year low in May.

Businesses added 223,000 jobs in May, up from 159,000 in April, driving the unemployment rate to 3.8 percent.

For women, unemployment fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest since 1953. For black Americans, it hit a record low of 5.9 percent.

Nancy Pelosi, however, is not impressed.

Trump lawyers reveal previously unknown evidence in Michael Flynn case

A newly-leaked January 29 memo from President Trump's first legal team to special counsel Robert Mueller suggests the president believed fired national security adviser Michael Flynn was no longer under investigation when he famously asked FBI Director James Comey — by Comey's account — to let the Flynn case go. With a wealth of previously-unreleased information about the Flynn affair, the memo also supports the contention that the FBI did not believe Flynn lied to the agents who questioned him in the Trump-Russia probe.

The bureau interviewed Flynn on Jan. 24, 2017, about his transition conversations with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. In March 2017, Comey told the House Intelligence Committee that the agents "saw nothing that indicated to them that [Flynn] knew he was lying to them." Comey said the same thing to the Senate Judiciary Committee at around the same time; chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote recently that Comey "led us to believe … that the Justice Department was unlikely to prosecute [Flynn] for false statements made in that interview."

Now, with the Trump lawyers' memo leaked to the New York Times, it seems clear that all the key players in the Flynn affair, including the president himself, were aware of the FBI's assessment in real time. And the president's knowledge — that the agents did not think Flynn lied, plus strong hints that the investigation was actually over — underlay Trump's Feb. 14, 2017, statement to Comey that, "I hope you can see your way to letting this go, to letting Flynn go." Trump's lawyers argue that the president had no intention to obstruct an investigation he thought was finished.

Affirmative action in the control tower

I don't fly. When folks ask me why, the short answer is that I know too much: I'm a former FAA air traffic controller.

It's been recently reported that the FAA is now actively recruiting new trainees to work in the towers and control rooms directing airplanes and that the criteria they now utilize to screen applicants is a curiously absurd "biographical questionnaire." Jason L. Riley in the Wall Street Journal:

A recently completed six-month investigation by Fox Business Network found that the Federal Aviation Administration has quietly moved away from merit-based hiring criteria in order to increase the number of women and minorities who staff airport control towers. The changes come despite the fact that the FAA's own internal reports describe the evidence for changing the hiring process as "weak."

Until 2013, the FAA gave hiring preference to controller applicants who earned a degree from one of its Collegiate Training Initiative schools and scored high enough on an eight-hour screening test called the Air Traffic Selection and Training exam, or AT-SAT, which measures cognitive skills. The Obama administration, however, determined that the process excluded too many from minority groups. In May 2013, the FAA's civil rights administrator issued "barrier analyses" of the agency's employment procedures, which recommended "revising how the AT-SAT is used in establishing best-qualified lists."

By the start of last year, the FAA was using a biographical questionnaire (BQ) to initially vet potential hires. The questions – "How many sports did you play in high school?", "What has been the major cause of your failures?" – seem designed to elicit stories of personal disadvantage or family hardship rather than determine success on the job.

Gun Control Fail: Shooting Attacks Rock Australia, London

Australian police discovered the bodies of seven mass shooting victims on May 11, and on May 31, a machine gun attack in London left a man in this twenties fighting for his life. These shootings are occurring in nations the left has long held up as having the kinds of gun control America should implement.

For example, on October 16, 2015, during a campaign stop in New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton described Australia’s confiscatory approach to gun control and said that “it would be worth considering doing it on the national level” here. And on July 5, 2016, Breitbart Newsreported that gun-toting action star Matt Damon used the Australian premiere of Jason Bourne to praise that country’s gun controls. Stuff magazine quoted Damon saying, “You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t.”

On September 12, 2014, shoot ’em star Liam Neeson spoke to the Independent, complaining about private gun ownership in America and praising Great Britain for banning handguns.

Yet here we are in 2018, with a mass shooting in Australia, a machine gun attack in London, and London stabbings at such levels that knife control is the talk of the town.

Survey says summer hiring will be hot this year

WASHINGTON — Companies looking to fill summer jobs this year will pay more as they compete for workers, and many of those summer jobs will turn into full-time employment.

A CareerBuilder survey of hiring managers and HR professionals found 41 percent of employers plan to hire seasonal workers for the summer, on par with last year’s survey results.

Of employers hiring for summer jobs, 25 percent will pay summer hires $15 an hour on average — double the federal minimum wage — with 56 percent paying $12 or more per hour and 87 percent paying $10 or more.

A vast majority, 88 percent, also expect to transition some summer hires into permanent roles, up from 79 percent last year.

“Employers are grappling with a tough hiring environment, and summer workers are reaping the benefits,” said Irina Novoselsky, president and COO of CareerBuilder. “Employers are becoming more competitive with pay and offering more long-term employment opportunities to summer workers.”

Steve Hilton: Is Loony Left Gov. Jerry Brown killing California? What does that mean for America?

Exuberant Democrats – carried along by the self-righteousness of their authoritarian and puritanical identity politics zealotry, and self-confidence in the supposedly inevitable electoral annihilation of President Trump and Republicans in November – are starting to see a long-cherished liberal dream as an imminent reality: California as a model for the whole nation.

You’ll get the picture if you read a widely-shared article published earlier this year by Medium, written by tech guru Peter Leyden, headlined “The Great Lesson of California in America’s New Civil War.” The article is subtitled: “Why there’s no bipartisan way forward at this juncture in our history – one side must win.”

The article describes California as “the harbinger of America’s political future ... a model for America as a whole.”

The fact that Democrats in California now have complete control of all statewide political offices, the state Legislature and local government in cities like San Francisco is touted as great news for “working people.”

Second Opinion

As a child, I always had a fear of someone under the bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: "I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy.”

“Just put yourself in my hands for one year,” said the shrink..... “Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.”

“How much do you charge?” I asked.

“One hundred fifty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor.

“I'll sleep on it,” I said.

Six months later the doctor met me on the street. "Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?" he asked.

“Well, $150 a visit, three times a week for a year, is $23,400.00. A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought a new pickup truck.”

“Is that so?” and with a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?”

“He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain’t nobody under there now!”

It’s always better to get a second opinion.
