Chuck-E-Cheese adult brawls becoming epidemic

Not one, but two groups of adults sparked separate violent exchanges at a Victorville Chuck-E-Cheese in late February.

The first spark of fisticuffs was captured on film and posted on Facebook by a bystander named Sharon Cabrera.

When questioned about the incident, Cabrera said she believed the fight was initiated by a disagreement over tickets.

In the second spat that afternoon, it was reported that a 51 year-old woman was brutalized to the extent of nearly having her eyes gouged out by her attacker.

Female harp seal found on 127th Street, recuperates

A female harp seal that likely swam several thousand miles south from her home ended up on the beaches of Ocean City last Thursday.

The animal, which appeared exhausted and possibly injured, was crated by volunteers and workers from the National Aquarium and later taken to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, New Jersey.

According to Robert Schoelkopf, director of the center, the animal was doing fine as of Monday.

Schoelkopf said harp seals, also called ice seals, have been traveling from as far north as Iceland and Greenland since the mid-1980s, when warming trends and melting ice floes occasionally forced them south.

Trump's advisers push him to purge Obama appointees

Advisers to President Donald Trump are urging him to purge the government of former President Barack Obama's political appointees and quickly install more people who are loyal to him, amid a cascade of damaging stories that have put his nascent administration in seemingly constant crisis-control mode.

A number of his advisers believe Obama officials are behind the leaks and are seeking to undermine his presidency, with just the latest example coming from reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met twice last year with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. and apparently misled senators about the interactions during his confirmation hearing.

That was coupled with a New York Times story that Obama appointees spread information about the investigation into the Trump campaign's contacts with Russia in an attempt to create a paper trail about the probe. Trump's aides have also blamed Obama appointees for other damaging leaks, like Trump's erratic phone calls with foreign leaders.

Inside the White House, the chatter about Obama officials in the government has heightened in recent weeks, one administration official said. And advisers are saying it is time to take action.

"His playbook should be to get rid of the Obama appointees immediately," said Newt Gingrich, a top surrogate. "There are an amazing number of decisions that are being made by appointees that are totally opposed to Trump and everything he stands for. Who do you think those people are responding to?"

Schumer helped athlete ‘overcome’ Trump’s travel ban — now the athlete is charged with a heinous crime

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer (D) recently helped an Indian snowshoe athlete get a visa to come to the United States to compete in an event. Now that athlete has been charged with a heinous sex crime against a child.

Schumer, the Senate minority leader, along with Clyde Rabideau, mayor of Saranac Lake, New York, petitioned for Tanveer Hussain and his team manager to be granted entry into the U.S. after they were denied a visa in the immediate days after President Donald Trump signed his controversial executive order on immigration and refugees, according to the Washington Post.

Hussian is from India — not one of the countries included in Trump’s travel ban — so it’s not clear why his visa was initially denied.

Sen. Hatch ‘Shocked’ Obama Team Conducted Surveillance of Trump Campaign, Transition

Utah Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch told reporters Thursday he is concerned by the extent of surveillance President Barack Obama’s administration conducted on President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and transition team.

“I was just a little shocked by it,” said the senator, who is also the President Pro Tempore of the Senate and fourth in the line of succession behind Speaker Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.).

The senator also said that he suspects information gathered by the Obama administration’s surveillance of the Trump camp made its way to Obama’s anointed heir Hillary Clinton and her presidential campaign.

Mexico launches $50 million effort in US to provide legal aid to immigrants who fear deportation

MIAMI (AP) — Not only is the Mexican government not building a wall; it’s spending $50 million to beef up its legal aid to migrants who fear deportation, a response to President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.

All 50 Mexican consulates in the U.S. on Friday launched legal assistance centers to form partnerships with nonprofit groups and tap lawyers to help those fearing Trump’s policies.

The diplomatic effort comes as the two countries are in a rift over Trump’s plans for a border wall. While Trump says Mexico will pay for it one way or another, Mexico says it won’t. It was also unveiled less than two weeks after new guidelines came out aimed at aggressively detaining and deporting immigrants by increasing the number of federal agents and strengthening cooperation with local law enforcement.

Mark Levin to Congress: Investigate Obama’s ‘Silent Coup’ vs. Trump

Radio host Mark Levin used his Thursday evening show to outline the known steps taken by President Barack Obama’s administration in its last months to undermine Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and, later, his new administration.

Levin called Obama’s effort “police state” tactics, and suggested that Obama’s actions, rather than conspiracy theories about alleged Russian interference in the presidential election to help Trump, should be the target of congressional investigation.

Drawing on sources including the New York Times and the Washington Post, Levin described the case against Obama so far, based on what is already publicly known. The following is an expanded version of that case, including events that Levin did not mention specifically but are important to the overall timeline.

AT&T will bring 3,000 outsourced jobs back to US

AT&T has agreed to bring 3,000 outsourced jobs home to the U.S.

The union that represents AT&T workers, the Communications Workers of America, said Thursday that it's reached a tentative agreement with AT&T Southwest -- a regional landline arm of the company -- that includes a commitment to hire American workers to do jobs that were previously done by contractors overseas.

The four-year deal also covers wage hikes, paid parental leave, healthcare and benefits for 20,000 AT&T Southwest workers across five southern states. The exact terms of the deal still need to be approved by a union members vote.

AT&T praised the deal in a statement Thursday. "It maintains one of the most robust health care plans in the nation," the company said. "The agreement also includes two weeks of paid parental leave to help mothers or fathers bond with a newborn or newly adopted child."

Right On Cue, Soros-Financed MoveOn.Org Holds DC Protest Demanding Sessions’ Resignation

Right on cue, the George Soros-financed MoveOn.org progressive activist group on Thursday organized a protest outside the U.S. Department of Justice building calling for the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The protest was organized fairly quickly. It was held mere hours after reports surfaced that Sessions held two conversations with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. while he was Alabama’s senator and served on the Armed Services Committee. Sessions maintains that the conversations did not concern the 2016 presidential campaign. He served as an informal advisor to Trump during the presidential race.

Mother Jones reported the crowd at the MoveOn.org protest was about 100. ABC’s Local affiliate in Washington, DC reported “hundreds” attended.

Among the speakers was Rep. Sheila Jackson (D-TX), who proclaimed, “False testimony counters any right you have to remain Attorney General of the United States of America.”

The anti-Sessions protest marks the latest attempt by Soros-linked groups to impede Trump administration policies or target top administration officials.

Earlier this week, Breitbart News reported two Soros-financed groups distributed an actual script with anti-Trump talking points for citizens to use when meeting with constituents in town halls, including during last week’s Congressional recess.

There’s Another Widow of Fallen Navy SEAL — and She’s Not Holding Back on Trump’s Tribute at Speech

Taya Kyle said Wednesday that watching people politicize President Donald Trump’stribute to fallen SEAL William “Ryan” Owens and his widow makes her “sick” to her stomach.

And Kyle has much more authority to speak on the issue than any of the political pundits who have accused Trump of using Carryn Owens, a grieving widow, as a “prop.”

Kyle is the widow of legendary Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. She knows Carryn Owens’ pain all too well.

Responding to filmmaker Michael Moore’s claim that Owens was exploited to give an “f-you to the people who are criticizing Trump,” Kyle said forcefully:

“It makes me sick to my stomach, it makes me angry. Because he is saying two things when he says that to me, that…she’s a fool and doesn’t know she’s being used — and that’s ridiculous. It couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s also saying that this wasn’t warranted and in some way this always has to be political.”

At Decatur High School, New ‘Lunch My Way’ CafĂ© A Big Hit

BERLIN – As students at Stephen Decatur High School filtered into the cafeteria and through the lunch line Tuesday, things were noticeably different.

The normal lunch trays and food the students were accustomed to seeing were replaced with Chinese take-out containers and a plethora of Asian cuisine options. A sign out front proudly displayed the words “Lunch My Way.”

“The biggest thing the kids are really excited about today, or what the buzz is about, is having ‘Lunch My Way,’” said Odtis Collins, coordinator of food services for Worcester County Public Schools. “Students can actually go in and put together their own meal.”

Since the beginning of the school year, Collins said he and cafeteria managers have been working to rebrand school lunches. The goal, he said, was to give students more options.

“One of our biggest goals was to increase the variety of nutritional foods that we offer to our students,” Collins said. “I think we all determined that at the beginning of the year.”

Interoperability project deadline fast approaching

As the legislation that got the wheel turning on Project 25 — a radio interoperability requirement that would allow local, state, federal and other officials to talk to each other in an emergency — was signed by former Gov. Martin O’Malley, Snow Hill and Pocomoke can’t argue they didn’t see it coming.

What the municipalities can and must now do is worry about where the money for the project will come from, as a deadline of September 2017 looms as budget season begins.

Police and emergency radios are expensive — Snow Hill Mayor Charlie Dorman said a single unit can run between $3,000-$4,000 — and the consoles used by dispatchers to communicate with the radios are even more expensive.

“The State of Maryland, State of Delaware, Commonwealth of Virginia and Worcester County are actively transitioning all state government radio system users to the Project 25 standard,” a release provided by Dorman reads. “If the Town does not upgrade their radio infrastructure the Snow Hill Police Department will be unable to communicate with other agencies.”

Ocean City jumps 15 spots to No. 10 on best beach list

Jumping 15 spots, Ocean City was named the 10th best beach on TripAdvisor’s 2017 Travelers Choice top beaches list in the United States, joining beaches in Florida and Hawaii.

“It feels terrific to be named in the top 10 best beaches in the U.S. by Trip Advisor,” said Jessica Waters, communications manager for the Town of Ocean City. “Being the only beach outside of Florida or Hawaii tells us that we are doing something right when it comes to providing our visitors with the type of vacation destination that they are looking for.”

The winners were chosen by millions of travelers over a 12-month period and only Hawaii and Florida had beaches that cracked the top 10 this year.

“The fact that we were ranked based on the feedback from TripAdvisor users is something to be very proud of, both as a municipality, but also for our business community,” Waters said.

Siesta beach in Florida, Ka’anapali beach in Hawaii, St. Pete beach in Florida, Clearwater Beach in Florida and Beach at Panama City in Florida rounded out the top five beaches.

Lady Told Lawn Jockey Is Racist, Sets Them Straight With What It Really Means

After being told by a few of her friends that her long-standing lawn ornament – a black jockey holding a lantern – was racist, a woman finally became fed up with the ignorance. In order to set the record straight, the woman has since written a viral Facebook post, explaining what the statue really means – and it’s blown quite a few people away.

Lawn ornaments are a thing of American culture – the most popular being things like the pink flamingos, garden gnomes, and the black jockey that is usually at the end of the driveway. As it turns out, Sandra Dee McNair has one such yard decoration, which she refers to as her “lantern footman.”

Although she hasn’t thought too much about having it up, it seems that her friends have commented a time or two about it. As outlined in herpost gone viral, “I’ve had black people say you shouldn’t have that out that way ‘it makes people think you are a racist’ I laugh, or ‘its offensive to white people’ again I laugh and then explain what the significance of the lantern footman really is.”

Russian Ambassador Visited Obama at the White House 22 Times

With Democrats and their aides in the media insisting that even daring to meet with a Russian official is somehow a fireable offense, a look at visitor logs of the White House during Barack Obama’s presidency reveals Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak visited Obama or his operatives at least 22 times.

The visitor logs, which were put online for all to see, show that between 2009 and 2016, Ambassador Kislyak was a frequent visitor to the White House, the Daily Caller reported.

In fact, the visitor logs document that Russian officials met with Obama’s senior advisor, John Holdren, at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The logs show that others in the meeting were Marina W. Gross, Alexander Ermolaev, Alexey Lopatin, Vyacheslav Balakirev and Sergey Sarazhinskiy.

Ambassador Kislyak met with several of Obama’s top aides including National Security Council member Gary Samore, terrorism advisor Robert Malley, economic advisor Lawrence Summers, trade representative Michael Froman, and John Holdren.

Kislyak also visited the White House during several holiday events and other such meetings.

Holder Foretells The Return Of Obama: "He's Coming, And He's Ready To Roll"

Barack Obama, after making the very difficult decision to proceed with Penguin Random House to publish his and Michelle's White House memoirs in a deal rumored to net him about $60 million, is, at least according to old pal Eric Holder, ready to take his place at the helm of the democrats' Trump opposition efforts. Of course, this breaks with the tradition upheld by most former Presidents who have chosen to not publicly criticize their successors...but the rules don't really apply to Obama now do they?

According to Holder, Obama's triumphant return to politics will be focused on, among other things, fundraising (his specialty) andassisting the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) in its efforts to redraw congressional districts to give Democrats a leg up in the House of Representatives. Per Politico:

Barack Obama is getting closer to making his public reappearance in politics, his friend and former Attorney General Eric Holder said on Tuesday.

Holder said he’s been talking to the former president about ways — including fundraising and interacting with state legislators — that could help the new National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which Obama asked Holder to chair last year.

“It’s coming. He’s coming,” Holder said, speaking to reporters at a briefing for the new group. “And he’s ready to roll.”

Throughout, Holder said, Obama “will be a more visible part of the effort.”

Dirty Secret Behind Wind Turbines Is They Need Lots Of Oil

Offshore wind turbines may generate green energy, but they use a lot more oil than proponents like to admit.

Just installing the foundation of a single offshore turbine can consume 18,857 barrels of marine fuel during construction, according to calculations published by Forbes Wednesday. Offshore wind farms often have over 100 wind turbines, meaning that building them requires almost 2 million barrels of fuel just to power the ships involved in construction.

“You can’t even construct or operate offshore wind turbines without oil,” Chris Warren, a spokesman for the free-market Institute for Energy Research, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “For decades, we have been told that wind, solar, and other so-called ‘green’ sources are the future, and yet these sources remain expensive, intermittent, and unreliable despite government mandates and subsidies. Offshore wind in particular remains one of the most expensive sources of electricity that exists.”

The Long Island-New York City Offshore Wind Collaborative will cost $1 billion dollar to build and generate roughly 200 megawatts of electricity, enough to provide power to between 40,000 and 64,000 homes — depending on how much the wind blows over the course of the year.

Peter Schweizer: Trump vs. Clintons' Russia ties (guess who always got a free pass)

While it’s quite legitimate to be concerned about Russian influence in America politics, its rather remarkable to watch the dizzying pace by which people who in the past have expressed little concern about the matter are now suddenly obsessed with it.

There has been plenty of finger pointing at those in President Donald Trump’s orbit about their business ties to Russia.

One time Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was an adviser to the pro-Russian president of the Ukraine and involved in business ventures with pro-Kremlin oligarchs.

Former Trump advisor Carter Page had energy deals involving Russian companies.

Former National Security Adviser General Michael Flynn gave a nicely paid speech in Moscow as a private citizen and was less than complete in explaining his conversations with Russian officials. And then there is the simple fact that Attorney General (former senator) Jeff Session, while a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee communicated with the Russian Ambassador as other senators do fairly regularly.

Maryland Governor Backs Legislative Redistricting Reform

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Gov. Larry Hogan is making another push for legislative redistricting reform.

The Republican governor held a news conference Friday before hearings on legislation he is backing. The measure aims to take politics out of the process of drawing legislative districts by putting the task in the hands of an independent board.

Under the current system, the governor proposes maps for congressional districts and state legislative districts, and the legislature votes on them in a special session every 10 years. Critics say that enables politicians in power to draw the maps to their liking, instead of in consideration for the people represented.

Maryland imam’s advocacy of ISIS lands him at center of terrorism probe

Bengharsa celebrated ISIS killings and immolations on Facebook and issued a blistering fatwa against feminism through a sharia law center he started in Montgomery County, Md., not far from the nation’s capital. He criticized fellow Muslims who assisted authorities in terrorism investigations.

Democrats are banking on Trump's failure

Democrats have emerged with a plan to counter President Trump's well-received Tuesday speech to a joint session of Congress: make a big bet that Trump's policies will fail and that the nation will eventually reject him.

A day after Trump's big moment on Capitol Hill, Democrats made it clear they are looking to oppose Trump at every turn, and hope voters can start seeing the effects of Trump's agenda, no matter how effectively he is able to communicate with voters.

"It's not a question of one speech," Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., told the Washington Examiner after Trump's address, which political pundits declared the best of Trump's political career. "If Democrats speak out against him and a year and a half from now people don't think too highly of him, then that's good" for Democrats.

Nadler and other Democrats interviewed by the Examiner are banking on Trump's long and ambitious list of pledges failing to materialize — from a plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, to comprehensive tax reform and a major bill to refurbish the nation's infrastructure.

"He's making promises that aren't going to happen," Nadler said.

Democrats Want AG Sessions To Resign. Here Are 5 Things Obama AG Eric Holder Never Resigned Over.

The Democrats are howling for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign over a trumped-up controversy that appears to be a "nothingburger." Per usual, the Democrats are conveniently forgetting their own recent attorney general's controversy-ridden record; Eric Holder was enmeshed in scandal yet the Democrats never called on him to resign.

Here are five things Holder did that didn't prompt the Democrats to call for his resignation.

1. Holder was held in contempt by Congress for stonewalling investigations into Operation Fast and Furious. As the Daily Wire has previously explained:

"Operation Fast and Furious involved the Obama administration arming drug cartels and thugs south of the border as a means to undermine the Second Amendment. The program resulted in the death of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. One of the Islamic terrorists in the Garland, Texas, attack also used a gun that was obtained through the Fast and Furious program."

Fast and Furious was in Holder's purview, so the fact that he kept obstructing investigations into it is quite telling.

Storm is Brewing Over Leaks

Remember, Presidents get information before anyone else so it goes without saying, there's a reason President Trump is tweeting this out. Bypassing the Media that wouldn't report this due to their bias stance.

Robert Barnes: Obama Encouraged ‘Deep State’ ‘De Facto Coup’ Against Trump

On Friday’s Breitbart News Daily, SiriusXM host Alex Marlow asked attorney Robert Barnes about the campaign of leaks designed to damage the Trump administration, described by some observers as “deep state” career bureaucrats and/or holdovers from the Obama administration acting as saboteurs. Marlow wondered if there was any legal recourse for the Trump administration to halt this operation.

“Yes, there is,” Barnes replied. “In fact, it’s one of the directions that a future investigation can take. A future investigation doesn’t have to focus on whatever it is the Democrats or liberals want. It can focus on the illegal leaks that took place.”

“As I mentioned the other day to a liberal lawyer friend of mine, the worst thing ever accused concerning Nixon was about using private resources to try to illegally spy on people. Here you had Obama’s people using the NSA to spy on his adversaries, and apparently include the CIA, the FBI, and members of the Department of Justice in that loop, in a manner that was not approved of by any court, that was not approved by even a FISA court – the special court that monitors certain kinds of surveillance,” he said.

“Just because a conversation involves a foreign official doesn’t allow you to illegally tape it, illegally monitor it, or illegally record it when a U.S. citizen is on there, particularly when it’s your political adversary,” Barnes explained.

JUST IN: Trump accuses Obama of wiretapping Trump Tower during the election

President Trump accused his predecessor, Barack Obama, of wiretapping Trump Tower during the campaign in October, in a series of tweets Saturday morning

"Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!", Trump first tweeted. Then the president sent out a tweet about the 22 times the Russian ambassador reportedly visited the White House, including four times last year.

Obama, the 44th president, left the White House in January. He has supported and campaigned for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump's next tweet compared the "scarry" wiretap to the Watergate scandal that led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

"How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!", Trump tweeted.

LEGENDARY COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER

The Barber Shop

Now almost a thing of the past is that bastion of masculinity – the barber shop. In 1899, there were six barber shops listed in the City Directory. That figure increased to nine in 1907, but was reduced to eight in 1921. In the following years the number of listed barber shops rose to 17 in 1940 and dropped down to seven in 1961. The current yellow pages have no less than 68 listings under “barber shops”, most of which are out of Salisbury and listed as “salons” or “stylists”, certainly not barber shops.

The barber shop of bygone times offered shaves as well as haircuts. Many had a rack on the wall that kept individual mugs of shaving cream for the various customers. A shave from a barber cannot be had today, due to the current health laws. They have had to add certain amenities to their product line that may include a hair washing or “facial” just to make ends meet.

Every man has memories of his first trip to the barber shop. Mine were of Johnnie’s down on Church Street near what is now Route 13. I think he had another shop farther east on Church Street on the corner of Railroad Avenue. My mother told me this, but I don’t remember it being there. He then moved west on Church Street in a long narrow shop. There were chairs on either side leading up to the single barber chair manned by Johnnie Adkins. He also had a fake parrot in a cage that always fascinated me. He then moved to a house just a couple of addresses west. The one farther west on Church Street is still visible and the stone addition on the front of a white frame house is all that remains of Johnnie Adkins barber shop. Somewhere during this period, my mother entrusted me alone in the barber shop. She would walk down Church Street to Kelly’s Drug Store and wait for me there, which I always looked forward to because it meant a “soda fountain” soda.

I grew up in the “crew-cut” era and always had a stick of the red goop that made your hair stand up in front. I think they called it butch wax. The barber shop of choice was Krause & Taylor’s on N. Division Street. The price of a good butch cut went from 25 to 50 cents during this era. Of course, there was always the barber school located on S. Division Street. They charged 35 cents for a so-so haircut.

When longer hair became the style men, the local barber shops offered “hair-styling” for about seven dollars. I worked on the Plaza for Ralph & Gaskill at the time and all the young people on Main Street knew each other. It seemed that what barbers liked to refer to as styling, the beauty parlor at Benjamin’s considered a short cut. Since it was only three dollars, I never felt any embarrassment going there.

Another thing that has disappeared through the years is the Daisy & Bozman Barber Supply Store. They used to make their own after shave and my favorite was something called Bonita Bouquet. It only cost two dollars for a 16 ounce bottle. It also worked in your cigarette lighter and gave off a wonderful aroma. Ah, memories!

McCaskill 'Misleads' with Tweet She Had No Contact with Russian Ambassador

Claire McCaskill (D-Mo) sent out a misleading Tweet on Thursday claiming that she had never, “ever” met or spoken with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, while previous Tweets showed she met and spoke to the Russian official in 2013 and again in 2015.

“I’ve been on the Armed Services Committee for 10 years. No call or meeting with Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of the Foreign Res Com,” McCaskill tweeted on Thursday.

Almost immediately following her Tweet, McCaskill’s past Tweets contradicted her claim, including two retweeted by National Review Online Editor Charles C. W. Cooke showing a Tweet in 2013 and another in 2015 that said the senator spoke and met with Kislyak.

On Jan. 30, 2013 McCaskill tweeted “Off to meeting w/Russian Ambassador. Upset about the arbitrary/cruel decision to end all US adoptions, event those in process.”

On Aug. 6, 2015 McCaskill tweeted “Today calls with British, Russian and German Ambassadors re: Iran deal. #doingmyhomework.

Representative Harris Introduces Legislation to Combat Sanctuary Campuses

WASHINGTON, DC: Today, Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) introduced the Federal Immigration Law Campus Compliance Act of 2017. This legislation will end sanctuary policies on campuses nationwide without negatively impacting innocent individual students. The federal government currently provides around $38 billion in grants each year to universities for research and development. Approximately 23% of those funds go to overhead or indirect costs associated with research and development activities, with some institutions receiving hundreds of millions of dollars each year. By withholding reimbursement for “indirect” or overhead costs associated with research and development grants from any institution of higher learning that does not comply with federal immigration law, this legislation will end sanctuary campus policies nationwide.

“I am proud to sponsor and introduce the Federal Immigration Law Campus Compliance Act of 2017. Educational institutions that refuse to comply with federal immigration law undermine our nation’s security. The aim of my bill is to hold these institutions accountable without penalizing students. By withholding only reimbursement for indirect research costs, American students will still have access to financial aid, Pell grants, and direct research funding,” said Congressman Harris.

Congressman Harris’ legislation stands apart from similar bills introduced in the 115th Congress because of the narrow scope of the penalties outlined. The bill does not punish students. Instead, it simply removes a noncompliant university’s ability to pay for overhead costs with federal funds.

Keystone pipeline won't use US steel despite Trump pledge

The Keystone XL oil pipeline won't use American steel in its construction, despite what President Donald Trump says.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Friday that's due to language in a presidential directive Trump issued in January.

"The way that executive order is written, it’s specific to new pipelines or those that are being repaired, Sanders said. "And since this one is already currently under construction, the steel is already literally sitting there, it would be hard to go back. But I know that everything moving forward would fall under that executive order."

The directive applies to new pipelines or those under repair. Sanders said it would be hard to do an about-face on Keystone because it's already under construction and the steel has been acquired.

Trump said as recently as last week that Keystone and the Dakota Access pipeline must use American steel "or we're not building one."

Trump Advisers Call For A 'Purge' Of Obama Appointees

Earlier this week, in an appearance on Fox News, Trump confirmed his beliefs that Obama is behind the litany of leaks that have plagued his administration over the past couple of months.

"No, I think he [Obama] is behind it, because his people are certainly behind it. I also think it is politics, that's the way it is."

And while the source of the leaks may be easy to deduce, the appropriate response is not so easy to implement. That said, there is a growing chorus of advisers to the President who are urging him to purge the government of former Obama political appointees and quickly install more people who are loyal to him.

Newt Gingrich is among those calling for such a purge...per Politico:

"His playbook should be to get rid of the Obama appointees immediately," said Newt Gingrich, a top surrogate. "There are an amazing number of decisions that are being made by appointees that are totally opposed to Trump and everything he stands for. Who do you think those people are responding to?"

Gingrich added: "Ninety-five percent of the bureaucrats are against him."

Governor Larry Hogan Releases Heroin & Opioid Abuse Awareness PSA, "Before It's Too Late"

Governor, Actor Michael Kelly Urge Parents to Talk to Their Kids About Drug Abuse

ANNAPOLIS, MD –
Governor Larry Hogan today released a statewide public service announcement (PSA) urging parents to discuss the risks of heroin and opioid abuse with their children. The 30- and 60-second PSAs, titled "Before It's Too Late," feature actor Michael Kelly, star of an award-winning television series filmed in Maryland.

“Addressing this crisis that is ravaging communities across Maryland and the country has been and will continue to be a top priority of our administration,” said Governor Hogan. “This epidemic affects people of all walks of life, and opioid abuse is becoming more and more common among our youth. It is critical that parents talk to their children about the dangers of heroin and opioid abuse – before it’s too late. I would like to thank Mr. Kelly for partnering with us to raise awareness of this important issue.”

The launch of this statewide PSA follows sweeping action by the Hogan administration to continue combating the heroin and opioid crisis. On Wednesday, Governor Hogan signed an Executive Order declaring a State of Emergency in response to the crisis, activating the state’s emergency management authority and ramping up coordination between the state and local jurisdictions. The governor also announced $50 million in new funding to address the crisis and appointed his senior emergency management advisor to lead the state’s effort to combat the crisis.

Upon taking office, Governor Hogan instituted the Heroin and Opioid Emergency Task Force, led by Lt. Governor Boyd Rutherford. Over the last two years, the Hogan administration has made proactively addressing this crisis a cornerstone of the administration’s agenda. In January, the governor announced the administration’s enhanced 2017 Heroin Prevention, Treatment, and Enforcement Initiative, a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the evolving threat of heroin and opioid addiction. The initiative includes three important pieces of legislation: the Prescriber Limits Act of 2017, the Distribution of Opioids Resulting in Death Act, and the Overdose Prevention Act, as well as important budgetary actions, including $14 million in new funding to address the crisis. Read more about the governor’s initiative here.

The PSA will run on local news stations and public access channels across the state. Click here to download high-quality video files.

HEARING ALERT: Common Sense Spending Act Of 2017

Important Legislation Limits Growth Of Mandated Spending and Helps Restore Fiscal Responsibility

Note: Senate Budget And Taxation Committee to Hold Hearing on SB 303 on March 1, 2017, 1:00 PM
House Appropriations Committee to Hold Hearing on HB 420 on March 3, 2017, 1:00 PM

“We have repeatedly cautioned against the unsustainable forced spending increase that currently account for 83 percent of the state’s own source revenue, and which have put our budget on auto-pilot for even more massive spending increases, that we simply can’t afford in times when revenues are not there.” - Governor Larry Hogan, January 17, 2017

Governor Hogan Has Taken Consistent Steps To Show His Commitment To Restoring Fiscal Responsibility To Maryland State Government

Governor Hogan Successfully Stopped Over 85% Of New Mandated Spending Proposed by the General Assembly During The 2016 Session. (Maryland Department Of Budget And Management)
Governor Hogan: “Last year, not only did the legislature ignore our warnings on the need for mandate relief, they instead actually proposed a whopping $4.4 billion dollars in new forced spending increases – in just 90 days. Luckily we were able to stop most of that. But in spite of our best efforts, they were able to force another $519 million dollars in new mandated spending increases” (Remarks, “Governor Hogan’s Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Address,” 1/17/17)

Since Taking Office, Governor Hogan Has Shown Fiscal Restraint By Not Spending Over $182 Million In Funds Fenced Off By the General Assembly. In fiscal year 2016, the General Assembly fenced off $85.9 million which Governor Hogan did not release, additionally in fiscal year 2017, Governor Hogan has decided not to release $96 million in funds fended off by the General Assembly. (Maryland Department Of Budget And Management)

Governor Hogan Introduced Similar Legislation To The Common Sense Spending Act Of 2017 During The 2016 Legislative Session

In 2016, Governor Hogan Proposed Legislation To Offer Mandate Relief; Legislation Was Never Brought Up For An Up Or Down Vote.
The Washington Post Editorial: “The Fact That 83% Of State Spending Is Formulaically Mandated Is… Unsustainable.” “As Mr. Hogan pointed out, those mandates account for more than 80 percent of the state’s annual spending, which means that governors have relatively little budgeting leeway. There is a sensible argument to be made for trimming spending when state revenue falls or fails to meet projections… The fact that 83 percent of state spending is formulaically mandated is, as Mr. Hogan pointed out, unsustainable.” (“Maryland’s Budget Autopilot,” The Washington Post, 1/9/16)

Members Of The General Assembly Have Disregarded The Governor’s Call For Common Sense, Responsible Fiscal Action

Senate President Miller Stated That It Would Be A “Cold Day In Hell” Before Governor Hogan Were To Sign Legislation Ensuring Mandate Relief. “Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller (D-Calvert) said Tuesday it would be a ‘cold day in hell’ before he will allow Hogan to get spending mandates relief…” (Ovetta Wiggins, “7 Things To Watch During The 2016 Maryland General Assembly Session,” The Washington Post, 1/13/16)
