Washington, DC, workers to get 16 weeks paid leave under city hall plan that taxes businesses

Washington, D.C., is poised to give workers in the city the most generous family-leave benefits in the country -- a plan that is backed by the Obama administration and would side-step Congress on such issues.

If approved, the legislation would give essentially every part- and full-time employee in the nation’s capital as much as 16 weeks of paid leave for such family matters as newborn care, illness or a sick relative.

The plan would be funded by an employer tax and was introduced last week with support from seven City Council members, enough to pass in the 13-person panel, in one of the most liberal cities in the country.

The Obama administration and other supporters argue lower-paid employees cannot afford to take off work for family matters and that 43 million U.S. private-sector workers have no employer-paid sick days.

Armed Robbery In Salisbury

Yes, the US government really is bankrupt. Here’s proof:

I’ve long-stated that the government of the United States is completely insolvent.

And that is 100% true statement.

The government’s own numbers show that official liabilities, including debt held by the public and federal retirement benefits, total $20.7 trillion.

Yet the government’s assets, including the value of the entire federal highway system, the national parks, cash balances, etc. totals just over $3 trillion.

In total, their ‘net worth’ is NEGATIVE $17.7 TRILLION… a level that completely dwarfs the housing crisis.

If you include the government’s own estimates of the Social Security shortfall, this number declines to NEGATIVE $60 TRILLION.

More troubles for Rosie O'Donnell, now she's being sued for defamation

Rosie O’Donnell is being accused of making false and defamatory statements about an ex-producer of “The View” in a lawsuit filed in New York Supreme Court.

Jennifer Shepard-Brookman, who worked as producer and senior producer of “The View” from 2001 to 2015, claims that O’Donnell falsely accused her of betraying professional and personal confidences and leaking information to the media. She contends that O’Donnell “was solely motivated by and exhibited personal spite and ill will” against her.

The lawsuit claims that O’Donnell, after returning to the show last year, attempted to assert control of the show and clashed with Whoopi Goldberg, and sought to take coverage of news stories away from her.

Local Maryland bartender’s Concoction Becomes A Business

BERLIN, Md. – His company started in a small restaurant on a side street of this tiny Maryland town, but now it’s coming to grocery stores around the region.

Before starting his business, Greg David, CEO and president of George’s Bloody Mary Mix, was a bartender at The Globe Restaurant and Bar in Berlin. On the weekends, he made his own secret recipe for Bloody Mary mixes and would have customers try his concoction.

Now George’s Bloody Mary Mix, the name a tribute to his late father, has quadrupled in the past year, according to David.

David couldn’t imagine the success his business would have. After his two business partners, Theda Bakis and Alex Bakis, convinced him to sell his famous Bloody Mary mix, he started to realize the demand for his product.

Indiana Sheriff to Obama: I Won't Register Guns

Sheriff Brad Rogers, the top-ranking law enforcement official for Elkhart County, Indiana, said during a panel appearance on WNIT’s “Politically Speaking” segment, that he wouldn’t abide government orders to register weapons from private citizens within his jurisdiction, no matter what President Obama presses.

“We’ve always had this conversation that we need more reasonable gun control put in place,” Rogers said, Infowars reported. “Well, we have what is reasonable, in my opinion, and in fact it’s probably overdone.”

He then said he actually tells residents under his jurisdiction they shouldn’t register their firearms.

“I’m from the government, and I don’t think the government has any place in gun registration,” Rogers said. “The government shouldn’t know who’s got weapons … we’ve seen in other countries what could happen when the government knows who has what guns.”

And he went on, saying citizens should always resist the idea of registrations for firearms.

Texas student puts super glue in freshman girl's hair

She was mortified. Humiliation still sets in as she walks into school each day.

"It's horrific. I can't describe how awful it is going to school after that," said Hannah Combs, a freshman at Harker Heights High School.

What she describes as a nightmare began on September 14.

Before the first bell rang, Hannah was hanging out with a group of friends when she saw two other students playing with super glue. "I should havepaid attention more. I guess that was my first mistake," she said.

She says what happened next was painful. One of the boys put super glue on her head."My head immediately lit up on fire," she said. Hannah was picked up from school and taken to urgent care where they spent half an hour trying to remove the glue from her scalp.

Another Anti-gay Hate Crime Deemed a Hoax

Police in Grand Forks, North Dakota, determined that a man who claimed to have been the victim of a vicious anti-gay attack at a University of North Dakota fraternity made up the entire story.

Haakon Gisvold is accused of lying to police in August about a brutal assault and robbery at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He claimed that fraternity members shouted anti-gay slurs as they beat him, choked him, stripped him down to his underwear and robbed him. He said he hid in a bush until someone brought him clothes, The Daily Caller reported.

Upon hearing the story, Lambda Chi Alpha’s national headquarters in Indianapolis restricted UND’s Epsilon-Zeta chapter from all formal activities. University of North Dakota President Robert O. Kelley also sent an email to students expressing his disappointment in the fraternity’s actions, the Daily Caller said.

But during a month-long investigation, which included identifying 150 potential witnesses, police determined that Mr. Gisvold concocted the entire story. There was a physical altercation, but police determined that Mr. Gisvold instigated it.

Correctional Officers intercept contraband intended for prisons

TOWSON, MD – Correctional officers staffing an entrance to the Jessup Correctional Institution (JCI) intercepted a delivery truck this week with boxes attached to the vehicle containing contraband cell phones and drug paraphernalia. The contraband was discovered during normal search procedures of vehicles entering Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services correctional facilities.

As a result of the initial vehicle search and seizure, inspections were performed on additional vehicles operated by the delivery company which services 10 central Maryland prisons. The inspections revealed three more trucks to be carrying phones and drug paraphernalia believed to be intended for the institutions.

The initial discovery of the contraband occurred when a correctional officer doing a routine inspection of a vehicle noticed what appeared to be two black boxes affixed to the bottom of the truck cabin. The boxes were identified as electrical junction boxes with several magnets affixed to the bottom side.

Physicist Dyson: Obama 'Chose the Wrong Side' on Climate Change

Noted theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson says he votes for Democrats, but is disappointed with the position President Barack Obama has taken on climate change.

Dyson worked on climate change before his retirement as professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton in 1994, and said in an interview with the U.K. Register that scientists are ignoring their own data that show climate change isn't happening as quickly as their models are predicting.

Climate change, he said, "is not a scientific mystery but a human mystery. How does it happen that a whole generation of scientific experts is blind to obvious facts?"

"It's clear now the models are wrong, but it wasn't so clear 10 years ago. I can't say if they'll always be wrong, but the observations are improving and so the models are becoming more verifiable."

Carbon dioxide isn't as bad for the environment as claimed, he said, and actually does more good than harm.

Ocean City pension expenses decline for fiscal year ‘15

The city will be looking at a considerable amount of budget headroom for the current fiscal year, with 2015 pension contributions having come in significantly less expensive than anticipated.

However, Finance Administrator Martha Bennett urged the city council this week to hold off of appropriating any of the budget surplus to other projects, given that next year’s pension contribution may not come in as low.

“Remember that our pension valuations are April-to-April. This report gives you a snapshot of what our plans looked like in April 2015. In the last six months, the markets have not done as well,” Bennett noted.

The city contribution to its pension plans is determined each year by an actuarial study, which looks at the town’s employee base and estimates what the cost will be to support that group after they retire. The difference between what the city currently has in its trust funds, and what the estimated future liability comes out to be, is paid off with contributions over several years.

Commission Sends Text Amendment Back To Council With 36-Unit Cap On Buildings

BERLIN – A text amendment to allow the apartments proposed for Seahawk Road to move forward as planned will again return to the town council following a favorable recommendation from the Berlin Planning Commission.

On Wednesday, the planning commission agreed to forward the proposed amendment, which will allow the apartment complex to include buildings larger than those currently permitted, on to the council with a favorable recommendation. While the commission had already done so once, at the request of the council the text amendment was changed to include a limit — 36 units — on a building’s potential size. Attorney Mark Cropper, who proposed the amendment on behalf of developer Blair Rinnier, said the change would simply allow the developer to construct buildings of 24 and 36 units as opposed to the 12-unit buildings currently allowed by town code.

“In his opinion, he can do a nicer, more attractive project if he can exceed 12 units,” Cropper said.

Rinnier has presented plans to build a 700-plus unit apartment complex on Seahawk Road. Site plan approval for the first, 150-unit phase of the project was granted but was contingent on the town council’s passage of a text amendment that would enable Rinnier to build the 24- and 36-unit buildings shown in the plan. The amendment stated that when “public necessity, convenience, general welfare and good zoning practice” will be better served by buildings with more than 12 units, the planning commission “may allow a multi-family building to consist of any number of dwelling units as determined on a case by case basis.”

Insurrection Erupts at the Democratic National Committee

Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz's autocratic ways in limiting the number of primary debates alienated many of her colleagues.

Before things went awry, Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii had been planning to be in Las Vegas for her party’s first presidential debate. Gabbard is one of five vice chairs of the Democratic National Committee; of course she would be there. But instead of talking up her party’s prospects on the Strip earlier this week, Gabbard was in Honolulu. Her presence in Sin City was strictly virtual, and anything but boosterish: She spent debate day giving cable-news interviews via satellite, claiming that, as retribution for loudly calling for more Democratic debates than the DNC currently envisions, she was deemed unwelcome in Vegas by the committee’s chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz—who Gabbard suggested is an enemy of free speech, as well as a liar.

For most debate viewers and Democratic voters, the Gabbard flap, if it registered at all, was little more than a sideshow. But among Democratic officials and strategists, the dust-up was an embarrassing public spectacle—a boiling-over of long-simmering frustrations and resentments within the party hierarchy at a highly inopportune moment.

Of two dozen Democratic insiders with whom I spoke this week, including several DNC vice chairs, not one defended Wasserman Schultz’s treatment of Gabbard. Most called it ridiculous, outrageous, or worse. Many argued, further, that the debate plan enacted by the chairwoman is badly flawed—an assessment shared by many party activists, left-bent supporters of Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley, and those candidates themselves, all of whom see it as a naked effort to aid and comfort Hillary Clinton. And they maintained that the plan was a clear reflection of Wasserman Schultz’s management style, which many of them see as endangering Democratic prospects in 2016 and beyond.

Popularity of skin-bleaching skyrockets in Africa

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — Aaliyah Kouman brags about her daily skin care regimen, one the 29-year-old has followed since she was a teenager.

“Every night I use a bedtime oil called Body White,” she explained, proud of her pallid skin tone. “And in the mornings I mix cocoa butter with a whitening lotion.

“If the products ever begin to bother my skin, then I’ll stop,” she added. “If not, then I’ll continue to use them every day.”

Ms. Kouman isn’t alone. In fact, she’s part of a large and growing population of “tchatchos,” an untranslatable Ivory Coast term for people who bleach their skin using products with names like Fair and White, Glow and Nature White despite a ban on them passed by the Ivorian government earlier this year.

It’s a ban widely ignored despite what the government says are the good intentions behind it.

Nanny State of the Week: County can use same lawn treatments it banned residents from using

A county government in Maryland has determined some chemicals used in common lawn-care products are unsafe.

The kicker? Even the Environmental Protection Agency — one of the greatest bureaucratic nanny states in this nation of ours — has deemed the chemicals perfectly safe when used in small doses, such as the amount the average person would use on his lawn.

The second kicker? The county exempted its own golf courses and parks from the new ban, so it can continue to use those same, supposedly dangerous, lawn-care products.

We’ve said it before and we’ll surely say it again: Logic, common sense and empirical data have no place in the nanny state.

This week’s winner is Montgomery County, Maryland, where the County Council voted, 6-3, last week to impose the ban. The new rules make lawn care products such as Scott’s Miracle Grow and Monsanto’s Round-Up illicit substances.

As we noted when we covered this same topic in June, when the ban was first proposed the idea was to save county residents from potential cancer-causing chemicals in the weed-killing sprays and spreads.

Saudi Arabia: How the kingdom treats the people it is going to execute

Prisoners who have been sentenced to death can spend years kept in communal cells alongside other inmates

According to research by Amnesty International, the conservative kingdom put to death at least 102 people in the first six months of 2015 alone. Adultery, armed robbery, apostasy, drug-related offences, rape, “witchcraft” and “sorcery” all carry the death penalty.

There is no “death row” in Saudi Arabia, with prisoners who have been sentenced to death kept in communal cells alongside other inmates. Some spend years in jail without knowing the date of their execution, before suddenly being informed 24 hours before it takes place.

According to Sevag Kechichian, Amnesty’s Saudi Arabia researcher, the decision on when to execute a prisoner is made “arbitrarily”, based on whether a local governor feels the death rate in their area should be increased, or as a deterrent if there has been a spike in a certain type of offence such as drug smuggling.

Prisoners awaiting execution are moved to solitary confinement and spend their last night alone. In 95 per cent of cases beheading is the preferred method, but some death sentences are also carried out by firing squad. The executions typically take place in the public square of a town or city, with security forces laying a plastic sheet on the ground before announcing what is about to take place and carrying out the beheading.

If the prisoner has been sentenced to death followed by crucifixion, the spectacle does not end here. “After the beheading, they put the head in a bag, tie it to the headless body and then pull the body up with a crane and suspend it at a high altitude,” Mr Kechichian said. “It could be there for hours…the logic is that it’s a deterrent for everybody passing by.”

Some wings of the country’s larger prisons have been newly renovated so they are clean and modern, while there is also evidence that “high profile” prisoners such as activists are treated relatively well, he added. Conditions in more remote, rural prisons are very difficult to monitor but can be “horrible”. For most ordinary Saudi Arabians, he said, prisons are “degrading” and guards have “complete impunity” to mistreat them however they like.

County explains jail budget transfers to cover light, heat

Though the Worcester County Commissioners requested more information on several budget transfers during their meeting last Tuesday, one department in particular, the Worcester County Jail, drew the most attention.

The jail officials requested moving $108,651 in surplus funds earmarked for other expenses and redistributing it to where shortfalls were occurring.

One such transfer, commented on by Commissioner Ted Elder, would pay for $42,000 in electricity costs.

But where the money comes from is also important. Almost the entire transferred amount — $106,100 — comes from funds related to prisoners’ health and food service.

C.J. Pearson, Conservative Black Teen, Denounced

C.J. Pearson, the 13-year-old conservative black activist who made media waves with his critical insights into President Obama’s psyche, has come under attack from a somewhat surprising source: his sixth-grade teacher.

BizPac Review reported Pearson said his teacher at Columbia Middle School in Evans, Georgia, told fellow students he was “not worth saving in a fire.” AllenBWest.com, the blog of former Florida congressman, Allen West, also said Pearson claimed the teacher, named Michael Garrison, told students he “hates him [C.J.].”

According to Pearson, the students also told him that Garrison accused Pearson of cheating on a vocabulary test when he was in sixth grade, a charge that Pearson vehemently denies.

“It’s always great having a teacher that’s not only a liberal bully, but someone who engages in slander,” Pearson told BizPac Review.

As AllenBWest.com reported: “Pearson said, ‘My words are bold and I don’t expect everyone to agree. But to have a teacher say this about me? Completely inexcusable. I hope the Columbia County School District addresses this. Also, our school has zero tolerance bullying standards for students. I hope that standard isn’t easily forgotten when it comes to teachers.”

State Dept Report: Christian Minorities Under Extremist Attacks Around the World

The United States released a bleak report into the state of religious freedom around the world Wednesday, decrying jihadist attacks on Middle East minorities and a rise in European anti-Semitism.

In its annual survey of religious discrimination, the State Department said that, while many governments had worked harder to end abuses, extremist non-state actors like the Islamic State group are on the rise.

And discrimination is not limited to Washington's foes and rivals like Iran and China but is "egregious" in close allies like Saudi Arabia and worrisome even in Western democracies like France and Germany.

"No nation can fulfil its potential if its people are denied the right to practice, to hold, to modify, to openly profess their innermost beliefs," Secretary of State John Kerry said as the report was unveiled.

German Town of 100 Must Take 1,000 Syrian Migrants

A German mayor was perplexed Tuesday as to why his small town of approximately 100 people was livid over the arrival of 1,000 Syrian migrants.

The village of Sumte in Lower Saxony gathered for a public meeting Oct. 13. Locals from the rural town wanted to discuss the fallout from Chancellor Angela Merkel’s embrace of migrants fleeing Syria’s civil war and the Islamic State group.

“I did not expect so many interested residents,” Mayor Christian Fabel said, Breitbart London reported Wednesday.

Locals wanted to know how it was logistically possible to handle the needs of incoming migrants, including waste disposal and medical emergencies.

Resident Dirk Hammer said 1,000 was “too many.”

“How do we protect ourselves against crime?” asked one resident.

The mayor said “street lights” would be on at night and new policemen would be hired, the German newspaper Der Spiegel reported Thursday.

Forbes: GOP Candidates' Ideas More Appealing Than Dems 'Dreary Twaddle'

GOP presidential candidates' proposals to change the federal income tax code and a new "pro-growth" House leadership could lay the foundation for economic reforms surpassing those of President Ronald Reagan, publishing mogul Steve Forbes says.

In a commentary in Forbes, the magazine for which he serves as editor-in-chief, the media executive calls the developments "heartening" for the nation.

"What the Republicans are putting on the table is so much more appealing than the dreary, more-taxes twaddle of the Democrats that there will be a mandate for drastic, pro-growth tax simplification coming out of the 2016 election cycle," Forbes writes.

Forbes hails the federal income tax code changes offered by "almost every Republican White House aspirant" as a path to "enormous stimulant for economic growth."

"After seven lean Obama years of economic stagnation this would be rapturously welcome," he writes.

And, he adds, the new House leadership "will be much more oriented toward pro-growth policies than the outgoing crew," and will "want to do big things regarding taxes, spending and regulation."

Illegals Cost Tennessee Taxpayers Half a Billion

The cost of illegal immigration in Tennessee involves education, health care, law enforcement activities, and other government services. Although many illegal immigrants in the workforce pay taxes, fiscal expenditures surpass the tax revenues, according to research.

An analysis by the Federation for American Immigration Reform found that the burden on Tennessee taxpayers for illegal immigration was $285 million in 2007.

The figure for state and local expenditures jumped to $547 million in Tennessee during FAIR’s 2013 study on the burden of illegal immigration on U.S. taxpayers.

The 2007 study was based on an estimate of 100,000 illegal immigrants in Tennessee. Taxpayers spent some $228 million on the education for children of illegal immigrants, FAIR reported. An additional $27 million was spent on English instruction classes for many of these children.

An estimated $22.7 million a year was spent on medical costs for health care provided to illegal aliens. The estimate did not take into account higher than average medical bills or insurance costs needed to deal with uncompensated costs to hospitals and doctors.

Proposed Plan Calls For New Fire House On 65th Street; Larger Midtown Facility Needed

OCEAN CITY — Resort officials this week got a first look at renewed plans to renovate the Ocean City Fire Department headquarters on 15th Street along with a proposed plan to relocate the existing fire station at 74th Street to the parking lot of the Public Safety Building on 65th Street.

Citing a variety of factors, including a change in the leadership of the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company, the planned removal of the existing water tower at 15th Street and the proposed expansion of the 15th Street water plant, Ocean City officials earlier this year tabled any plans to renovate and expand the existing headquarters.

With many of those issues resolved, City Engineer Terry McGean along with Fire Chief Chris Larmore came back before the Mayor and Council on Tuesday to present a modified plan for the renovation of the 15th Street headquarters, along with an ambitious plan to relocate the 74th Street fire station to the parking lot of the Public Safety Building at 65th Street in the future.

Hillary Clinton: Snowden Should Face the Music for Stealing Classified Information

(CNSNews) - In the Democratic presidential debate on CNN on Tuesday night, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Edward Snowden should not be brought back to the United States "without facing the music" for his theft of classified information.

Moderator Anderson Cooper asked Clinton: "Secretary Clinton, [is Edward Snowden a] hero or traitor?"

Clinton responded: "He broke the laws of the United States. He could have been a whistleblower. He could have gotten all the protections of being a whistleblower. He could have raised all the issues that he has raised and I think there would have been a positive response to that. In addition, he stole very important information that has unfortunately fallen into a lot of the wrong hands. So, I don't think he should be brought back home without facing the music."

At another moment in the debate, Cooper asked Clinton about the fact that she will be testifying next week in a congressional committee about conducting her email business as secretary of state on a private server.

“Well, I’ve taken responsibility for it. I did say it was a mistake. What I did was allowed by the State Department," said Clinton.

Planned Parenthood to stop taking money for fetal-tissue donation

After having spent months saying that its officials were doing nothing unethical in undercover videos showing them haggling over the price for aborted fetal organs, Planned Parenthood’s leader said Tuesday the group will no longer accept any payment for the parts.

Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, called the new policy an effort to end the scandal over what she has called edited and misleading videos.

But there was no sign she would succeed as Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill said their investigations would go on and continued to denounce the practice of harvesting aborted fetal tissue as barbaric, whether done for profit or not.

“Our Federation has decided, going forward, that any Planned Parenthood health center that is involved in donating tissue after an abortion for medical research will follow the model already in place” at one affiliate, in which “no reimbursement for its reasonable expenses” is accepted, Ms. Richards said in a letter dated Tuesday to Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health.

The letter was also sent to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell.

The Clinton email scandal is serious enough. Nonetheless, it is useful to remember what exactly Mrs. Clinton was trying to hide before our litigation forced the disclosure of her separate email system.

Judicial Watch is in the lead in uncovering these Clinton cash abuses.

Recently, we released 789 pages of State Department “ethics” review documents concerning former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, revealing that at least one speech by Bill Clinton appeared to take place without the required State Department ethics approval.

Maryland To Be Third State To Phase Out Confederate Flag License Plates

Joining Texas and Virginia, Maryland will phase out the sale of license plates featuring the Confederate battle flag, following a ruling by a federal judge.

Reuters reports that "U.S. District Judge Marvin Garbis issued the order on Thursday, lifting a 1997 injunction at Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh's request." It adds that the order will go into effect on Nov. 17.

"I look forward to the day when these plates are no longer on the road," Frosh said in a statement. "This flag is a painful symbol that divides us, conjuring images of hate and subjugation. It has no place in any contemporary government use."

After a legal battle that rose all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, Texas became the first state to end the sale of "Sons of Confederate Veterans" license plates in June. Aswe reported at the time, the 5-4 decision meant "that the state of Texas was legally justified in refusing to issue a proposed specialty license plate for members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans."

"The court ruled in Walker v. Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Inc. that the license plate design constitutes government speech and therefore Texas is entitled to choose which messages it approves. Texas had rejected the proposed plate, which includes a Confederate battle flag, arguing that it was offensive to a 'significant portion' of the public."

Have Measures Worked In Ocean Pines To Control Geese Population?

BERLIN – While it’s too early to say if the efforts are working, the Ocean Pines Association has taken a multi-faceted approach to reducing the number of geese taking up residence in the community.

While the area is full of Canada geese in the midst of their annual fall migration, the Ocean Pines Association (OPA) has spent much of the past year targeting the non-migratory Canada geese that have settled around the ponds in the community. Following concerns about the effect the birds would have on water quality put forth by the Environmental and Natural Asset Advisory Committee, association officials last fall decided on a three-tiered system to discourage geese from settling in the area.

“The board decided on a multi-pronged approach to effectively manage the goose population,” OPA General Manager Bob Thompson said.

AP FACT CHECK: Clinton, Sanders revise history in debate

Hillary Rodham Clinton revised history in the Democratic debate when insisting she's not a flip-flopper on a trade deal she promoted as secretary of state but turned against as a presidential candidate.

Bernie Sanders overstated the share of wealth being taken by the richest Americans, a subject that goes to the core of his campaign.

A look at some of the claims in the debate among Democratic rivals Tuesday night and how they compare with the facts:

THE FACTS: Clinton did not say anything about mere hope in her speeches around the world in support of the trade deal. She roundly endorsed the deal taking shape.

In a November 2012 speech in Australia, she declared the Trans-Pacific deal "sets the gold standard in trade agreements," a sentiment she echoed in many venues.

Clinton said in the debate that when she looked at the final agreement last week, "it didn't meet my standards."

The final agreement, however, dropped or changed some provisions that liberal activist groups — the wing of the party she is assiduously courting at this stage of the campaign — had strongly criticized.

Sketchy 10% Of Doctors Are Writing More Than 50% Of Painkiller Prescriptions

While most doctors try to honor their oath to do no harm, some physicians just want to be paid (or are really, really, just horrible at their jobs). Take, for example, the 1-in-10 doctors responsible for writing the majority of painkiller prescriptions.

Fall season of giving for local nonprofit orgs

Local nonprofits are gearing up for their version of summer as fundraising efforts and events make their final press to find donors and solicit money before the end of the tax, and calendar, year.

According to GuideStar.org, itself a nonprofit dedicated to collecting records for all organizations registered as nonprofits with the Internal Revenue Service, there are close to 200 nonprofits registered in northern Worcester County — 81 in Ocean City and 113 in Berlin.

“The season begins in earnest on Oct. 1,” said Gee Williams, marketing director of the nonprofit Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, and mayor of Berlin. “We try to attend as many events as we can and it feels like there’s one every weekend from mid-September to early December.”

The Community Foundation uses donated funds or gifts to establish permanent endowments. As these endowments grow in value over time, the produced income funds grants to local charitable organizations. Though headquartered in Salisbury, CFES serves Worcester, Wicomico and Somerset counties and partners with dozens of charitable and faith-based organizations.

Democrats in debate propose trillions in new spending

The five Democratic presidential candidates pushed proposals in their first debate that would cost trillions in new spending, from free college tuition to single-payer health care.

Sen. Bernard Sanders of Vermont is the biggest spender of the group, championing universal government-run health care, expanded Social Security and free tuition at public colleges in a platform that The Wall Street Journal estimated last month would cost $18 trillion over 10 years.

The “College for All Act” advocated by Mr. Sanders would cost $109.9 billion in its first year, according to the National Taxpayers Union.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is proposing a plan to make college more affordable that will cost taxpayers roughly $350 billion over 10 years, NTU said. Her campaign said it would be fully paid for by limiting tax breaks for certain high-income taxpayers.

The Republican National Committee said Mrs. Clinton proposed $515 billion in new domestic spending over 10 years in the debate Tuesday night, on initiatives ranging from energy to education.

One of the Republican candidates for president, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, called the Democrats’ event Tuesday night “a liberal versus liberal debate about who was going to give away the most free stuff.”

Will Beyonce Replace Hamilton on the $10 Bill?

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew wants the American people to pick the woman whose face will replace Founding Father Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill, but will he listen to them if they pick, for example, Beyonce?

That’s right, Lew and other Obama administration officials have invited folks to nominate the woman they think most represents the theme “An Era of Democracy” by tweeting their choice using the hashtag #TheNew10.

And so far, the winner seems to be pop superstar Beyonce.

“Who else wants Beyonce on the new $10 bill?” one tweet said.

Of course Beyonce isn’t the only woman Americans would like to see on U.S. currency. The website StyleCaster nominated six women on Twitter for the honor, including Beyonce. The others are Joan Didion, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, Gloria Steinem, and Coco Chanel.

6M More Students With Bachelor's Than Jobs Available

Expert says one-third of those with bachelor’s degrees are in jobs that don’t require them

There are 6,455,300 more students with bachelor’s degrees today than jobs available for them, including jobs that would be created in the next seven years, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the National Center for Education Statistics.

According to the education statistics, therewere 35,632,000 Americans holding bachelor’s degrees from the age 25 to 64 in 2014. That number grows to 45,176,000 if you include those who are 20-24 and 65 years and older.

The BLS, which produces employment projections, calculates how many jobs will be added in the next 10 years with a breakdown by education level.

According to the BLS, there were 26,033,000 jobs that required a bachelor’s degree upon entry in 2012. That number is expected to grow to 29,176,700 jobs by 2022.

This means that the number of Americans who hold bachelor’s degrees now, in their working years, exceeds the number of jobs created by 2022 for bachelor’s degrees by 6,458,300.

Dead Freddies case adds plaintiff, defendant

Another former employee of Dead Freddies, Yvonne Hothouse of Ocean City, has joined a developing class action suit against OC Freddies LLC, which now names Steve Carullo, a co-owner of the business, as a defendant.

The lawsuit was filed Aug. 27 in federal court in Baltimore, alleging numerous wage and overtime violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, Maryland Wage and Hour Law and the Maryland Wage Payment and Collection Law.

While the defendants have until Monday to respond, the only document filed by the defense with the court is a motion to dismiss the claims of two plaintiffs, Desmond Dale of Ocean City and Salman Afridi of Salisbury.

On Tuesday Judge Ellen Hollander denied the motion to dismiss, as the plaintiffs had filed an amended complaint addressing the issues to the court’s satisfaction earlier that day.

Why Is Hillary So Unhappy?

Why is Hillary Clinton so unhappy? According to her, when she and her husband left the White House, they were dead broke. Yet they left with a truckload of valuable furniture, dinnerware and flatware that was the property of the federal government, for which they were never prosecuted.

They also left with contracts for lectures and speeches worth between $20 million and $30 million in the ensuing years. And they have done quite well financially. According to The Washington Post, between the time Bill Clinton left office in 2001 and January 2013, when Hillary Clinton stepped down as secretary of state, Bill alone made $104.9 million for speeches, and Hillary’s standard speaking fee is $200,000 a pop.

Why is Hillary so unhappy? We can start with the fact that she is her own worst enemy. No Republican dirty trickster could have put her into the legal and political mess into which she has put herself. Her surreptitious refusal to follow federal law and her congenital lying about it have caught up with her.

By using her own computer server instead of the government’s in the four years of her tenure as secretary of state, she knowingly compromised the national security of the United States. She did this by receiving and sending at least 400 emails that contained information that under federal law was confidential, secret or top-secret, which is a felony.

The failure to preserve data of that nature is a federal crime, whether it is stamped with an official secret denomination, whether one has read it and perceived its secret nature, and whether it has fallen into enemy hands or not. Gen. David Petraeus was convicted of retaining the printed versions of secret and top-secret data in a desk drawer in his guarded home. It was alleged — but not proved — that he shared this data with one of his subordinates. Even though the subordinate had a security clearance, Petraeus was prosecuted.

The burning question that no one asked Hillary Clinton in the debate

The Democratic candidates for president hashed out their differences on gun control, the Iraq war and more in CNN's primary debate Wednesday night. Yet the minimum wage, one of the most important divisions between the contenders, came up only in passing.

The foremost candidates -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley, and former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton -- all believe the national minimum wage of $7.25 an hour should be raised. The issue is by how much.

Sanders and O'Malley have thrown their support behind a national movement to set the floor at $15 an hour. This movement has galvanized workers both in and out of unions in cities across the country, and has already claimed victory in the Pacific cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

While Clinton agrees the national minimum wage should be higher than it is now, she hasn't said to what specific level she thinks it should be raised. Earlier this year, she called into a conference of labor organizers who had gathered in Detroit to advocate for the $15 hourly minimum, but she didn't specifically endorse their goal, and she hasn't since then, either. She's spoken approvingly of legislation in Congress that would increase the minimum wage to $12 an hour nationwide, but whether she would support a minimum wage above that figure is an open question -- a question no one asked her during the debate.

Clinton might have good reasons for her reticence. While a large body of economic evidence suggests that raising the minimum wage really does benefit workers, those studies have focused on relatively small changes. Raising the national minimum wage to $15 would more than double the amount that employers must pay their workers in many areas.

Shoe Stores

The history of shoe stores in Salisbury goes back to at least 1878. In those days, the shoemaker was an accomplished leather worker. He probably worked on many of the leather accessories associated with horses. There are three listed for Salisbury in the 1878 Maryland Directory. In the 1891 Peninsula Directory, there are four establishments listed under “Boot and Shoemakers and Dealers” in Salisbury and neither of them are one of the three that were in business in 1878.

1899 saw seven stores selling boots and shoes, one of them being R. E. Powell Co. which many of us recall as still being in business through the 1960’s. How many remember the contraption they had where you put your feet in a large wooden box on a stand and it would show a green outline of your foot in the shoe you were contemplating purchasing to see if the fit was correct. There were also six businesses calling themselves “Shoemakers”, two of which were owned by African-Americans.

The E. Homer White Shoe Co. first appeared in the 1907 Salisbury Directory. The “Big Shoe” in front of the store was a Main St. icon. E. Homer White purchased a half interest in the shoe business of Homer Dickerson in 1896 and bought him out in 1898. The shoe store was in business until 1964 when E. Homer White, Jr. died.

Lacy Thoroughgood had a clothing store on Main St, and the button puller was an advertising give-away. The early high button shoes were easier to get on if you had one of these button pullers. This is from around 1910.

Another full line clothing and shoe store was Harvey Whitely, who advertised himself on the shoe horn as “the shoe man”. He was in business on S. Division St. from at least 1907 to 1921.

A shoe repair business that survived at least from 1916 to 1961 was the Arcade Shoe Repair Co., owned by Christus G. Chames I remember the business as being on E. Main St. near the Hubert R. White Hardware Store. He also had a hat blocking service which is unheard of these days. Another shoe repair business that many remember was the Ace Shoe Service near Watson’s Smoke House on W. Main St. Mr. Phillips opened the business in at least 1940 and was still in business in 1961.

Other shoe stores that have been a large part of the Salisbury business community were Edward’s (run by Eddie Shilkret at least from 1940) and the Vernon H. Powell Shoe Co. (still operating as VP Shoes and the Athlete). Vernon Powell started this business at least as far back as 1940. I remember my grandmother always shopped from Vernon Powell. Being deaf, there was no conversation between her and Mr. Powell. She would just walk in and tap him on the shoulder. He would just drop whatever he was doing and get her the two pairs of shoes she wanted. The style was always the same and she always bought a size 7 and a size 7 ½. She would start the day with the 7’s and after lunch she would put on the 7 ½’s, claiming her feet had swelled during the day. Makes sense to me.

CLARKE: DEM DEBATE ‘PLANTATION POLITICS,’ EMOTIONAL ‘ENSLAVEMENT OF BLACK PEOPLE,’ AND ‘WHORING FOR VOTES

Milwaukee County, WI Sheriff David Clarke (D) declared the Democratic presidential debate “plantation politics in its finest hour, the continued enslavement of black people, emotionally by the Democrat Party” and “whoring for votes” on Wednesday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel.

Clarke stated [relevant remarks begin around 1:50] “Sean, it was a pathetic display. It was plantation politics in its finest hour, the continued enslavement of black people, emotionally by the Democrat Party with this destructive liberal ideology, and they know it. They’re whoring for votes. They know that’s what they’re doing. The liberal ideology has been very destructive for the black community for the last 50 or 60 years. Poverty is now generational, it’s a lifestyle. The unemployment is obscene. They have to send their kids to failing public schools, drug and alcohol addiction, neighborhoods that are crumbling, all under Democrat control. They need to get off their knees and stop this stuff, and take a real message to the American people, and especially the black community that what they have done, they deserve an apology for from the Democrat Party.”

Juan Williams, columnist for the Hill and Fox News Political Analyst said it’s “pandering when you can’t say ‘All lives matter,’ but the reason for it is purely political. There is a real issue of excessive use of force in the country.” Clarke cut in to deny that there is an issue of excessive force. Williams also argued that the economic problems of the black community were not solely the result of Democrats.

Ben Carson tops GOP field in fundraising as Donald Trump rakes in unsolicited cash

Ben Carson topped the rest of the Republican presidential field in fundraising for the third quarter, with Jeb Bush placing second — a critical showing for the former Florida governor whose White House bid has faltered in recent weeks.

Although billionaire front-runner Donald Trump is self-financing his campaign and does not actively seek donations, the real estate tycoon took in more cash unsolicited than did some of his rivals who need donations to keep their campaigns running.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, meanwhile, reported the most cash on hand, arguing that he has been able to keep his spending low, leaving him well-positioned as the campaign hits the stretch before the Iowa caucuses in February that kick off the primary season.

Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, said he raised $20.7 million from July 1 through Sept. 30, followed by Mr. Bush’s $13.4 million and Sen. Ted Cruz’s $12.2 million haul, according to records filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission.

Businesswoman Carly Fiorina raised about $7 million, Mr. Rubio raised $6 million, Ohio Gov. John Kasich collected $4.4 million and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie brought in $4.2 million. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky reported a $2.5 million haul as he fights to be included on the next debate’s main stage amid declining poll numbers.

“We’re in it for the long haul,” Mr. Paul insisted in an interview on CNN. “We have planned and we have organized in all 50 states. I wouldn’t waste two years of my life trying to put this message out if I did not plan on being there when they voted, so we plan on being there when they vote.”

His $2.5 million was a major drop from the $7 million he raised in the second quarter, which ran from April 1 to June 30, but Mr. Paul said he has seen a surge in October and is comfortable with the $2 million in cash he had on hand.

But that $2.5 million take is less than what Mr. Trump raised with neither effort nor need.

Federal Prison Pork Ban Revoked

Just one week after the federal Bureau of Prisons banned pork products from its 122 prisons, pork roast will return to the dinner lines, officials said Friday.

The reversal came just hours after Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley, who represents the farm-strong state of Iowa, wrote to complain about the decision.

"The pork industry is responsible for 547,800 jobs, which creates $22.3 billion in personal incomes and contributes $39 billion to the gross domestic product," Grassley wrote to Bureau of Prisons Director Charles E. Samuels, Jr., reports The Washington Post, complaining that the "unprecedented" decision to take away pork could harm Americans employed in the industry.

Grassley chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees federal prisons, and said he was skeptical of claims made by a spokesman for the Bureau of Prisons, who said a survey showed pork was the inmates' lowest-rated food.

Police: Mom, daughter charged in love triangle slaying

LOTHIAN, Md. (AP) — A woman who shared a female lover with her husband decided to kill them both after she fell out of the love triangle, and she recruited her teenage daughter and the daughter’s boyfriend to help her do it, police and a relative said Friday.

The woman and her husband had both been involved with Jacqueline Riggs, but the couple’s 18-year marriage, which was “fraught with conflict and domestic abuse,” became more strained as the wife fell out of the love triangle, according to charging documents.

The mother and daughter recruited the girl’s boyfriend, 18-year-old Gabriel Struss, to help with the slayings, police said. The woman initially told police her husband committed suicide, but authorities said the cover-up unraveled as investigators learned the evidence didn’t match her story.

Now the 42-year-old mother, her daughter and the boyfriend face first-degree murder charges. The girl is charged as a juvenile. The Associated Press generally does not identify juveniles charged with crimes and is not naming her parents to avoid identifying the girl.

Oath Keepers to Train Students to 'Fight Back'

The controversial militia group Oath Keepers wants to train students to "fight back" at every college in the nation, saying it will offer training "with and without arms" in the wake of recent deadly massacres on campuses around the nation.

The Students Taking Over Protection program will start in Oregon, where nine people died at Umpqua Community College in the latest slaughter, the group announced on its website.

"Just as post 9/11, where people no longer submit and cooperate in their own murders on planes, the obvious answer to school shootings on college and high school campuses is that the students must stop submitting and cooperating in their own murders," Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and media director Jason Van Tatenhove wrote on the website.

"They must fight back, and we will show them how."

Cruz Demands Kerry Resign for Bashing Israel

In response to a slew of critical comments by US Secretary of State John Kerry and his spokesman against Israel as it defends itself from a wave of Arab terror, Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Friday demanded Kerry's immediate resignation.

Cruz's call comes in response to Kerry blaming the terrorism on "Israeli settlements" in an interview Tuesday, a statement his spokesperson John Kirby later tried to backtrack on.

Kirby himself had to issue a semi-retraction after falsely blaming the terrorism on Israel for changing the "status quo" on the Temple Mount on Wednesday, and likewise delegitimizing Israeli self-defense by claiming there are "credible reports" of Israeli "excessive force."

The State Department spokesperson also accused Israel of "terrorism," saying "individuals on both sides of this divide are - have proven capable of, and in our view, are guilty of acts of terrorism."

"Once again Sec. Kerry and his staff have proven themselves utterly unfit for the positions they hold,” Cruz told the Washington Free Beacon on Friday.
