Bernie Sanders cut short after 'Black Lives Matter' takes over rally
SEATTLE - Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was shoved aside by several Black Lives Matter activists and eventually left a Social Security Works rally at Westlake Park without giving his speech.
Sanders was just starting to address several thousand people gathered shoulder to shoulder at Westlake Park when two women took over the microphone.
"It's about the people, it's about grassroots movements," Mara Jacqueline Willaford, Black Lives Matter member said after taking the microphone. "The biggest movement right now in the country is the Black Lives Matter movement."
Organizers couldn't persuade the two to wait and agreed to give them a few minutes, prompting boos from some in the crowd.

Cummings Still Weighing Senate Run
A Baltimore Congressman is still weighing a run for Senate.
He says his life is about lifting up the spirits of the people of Maryland, and that’s why Maryland 7th District Congressman Elijah Cummings says he is thinking about his political future including running for the Senate seat now held by Barbara Mikulski.
Mikulski announced in March she would not run for a sixth term.
"It is not about me. It is bigger than me, and as you may know, I am a God-fearing man, and I have asked God for discernment and to show me the way, and I'm sure he will," Cummings told WBAL NewsRadio 1090 on Friday.

"The Only Way The Rich Get Richer Is If The Rest Of Us Get Poorer"
Far too many people have already used lines like “We Are All Greeks Now” for the words to hold on to much if any meaning by now. But it’s still a very accurate description of what awaits us all. Just not for the same reasons most who used it, did.
No, I don’t really want to talk about Greece again. I want to talk about where you live. And about how similar the two will be not too long from now. How Greece is holding up a lesson and a big red flashing warning sign for all of us.
Greece is the mold upon which all of our futures will be based. Quite literally. Greece is a test tube baby rat.

State Police Helicopter Crew Hoists Patient From Cruise Ship In Bay
(TANGIER ISLAND) A Maryland State Police helicopter crew combined their expertise with the abilities of their aircraft last night to successfully hoist a person needing prompt hospital care from a cruise ship underway in the southern section of the Cheasapeake Bay.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m. yesterday, the United States Coast Guard – Sector Baltimore was notified by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line that they had a passenger requiring immediate medical evacuation. Sector Baltimore requested the assistance of the Maryland State Police Aviation Command to perform an aerial hoist from The Grandeur of the Sea to provide medical care to one of their passengers and transport the man to the nearest hospital. The Grandeur of the Sea was located in the Chesapeake Bay approximately 10 miles southwest of Tangier Island and was traveling at approximately 6.2 knots. The Coast Guard requested Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter assistance because Trooper 7, stationed at St. Mary’s County Airport, was the closest aircraft to the ship.
The crew of Trooper 7 launched immediately and headed toward Tangier Island. When they arrived over the ship, the helicopter crew communicated with the crew of The Grandeur of the Sea who advised they were preparing the upper deck starboard side to use as the hoisting area. The crew from Trooper 7 prepared for a challenging hoist using the advanced technology aboard the AW-139 aircraft. While working with the crew of The Grandeur of the Sea, the flight crew began the process of hoisting the patient from the ship. When the patient was secured in the aircraft, the State Police flight crew provided advanced medical care and flew an adult male patient needing cardiac care to Peninsula Regional Medical Center.
State Police Aviation Command crews have conducted several hoists of patients off cargo ships, but they believe this is the first hoist of a patient from a cruise ship. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command has served Maryland citizens since 1970, and operates a fleet of ten helicopters from seven bases throughout Maryland on a 24/7/365 basis. Missions include medevac, law enforcement, search & rescue, homeland security, and disaster assessment. The success of rescues performed by the Aviation Command depends a great deal on the cooperative effort of local fire, rescue, EMS, law enforcement agencies, and our partners in the United States Coast Guard.

Four Ways To Get Your Hospital Bill Reduced
Nearly one in three Americans received a surprise medical bill over the past two years for hospital procedures and healthcare services they believed their insurance policy would cover.
That’s the key finding of a new national survey by Consumer Reports that also found most Americans are so confused about their rights to contest an unexpected health bill that more than half (57 percent) simply pay the bill in full.
“For years we have heard horror stories from consumers hit with surprise medical bills following routine and emergency procedures,” said DeAnn Friedholm, director of the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports.
“Even if you go to a hospital in your network, the unfortunate truth is that there is no guarantee that all your treatment — whether it’s the radiologist, anesthesiologist, or lab work — will be treated as in-network, leaving patients owing thousands of dollars they never anticipated.”
But experts note a handful of negotiating tricks can almost always get you a reduced bill. In fact, a secondConsumer Reports survey found that a whopping 93 percent of people who haggled over medical bills were successful in cutting their final costs.
Here are four tried-and-true negotiation strategies:

Hungary Wants 'Exemplary' Penalty For Migrants Cutting Fence
Hungary's governing Fidesz party says migrants caught cutting through the fence being built to stop them on the border with Serbia should be "punished in an exemplary manner," including prison sentences.
Fidesz parliamentary group leader Antal Rogan said Friday that "it is not enough that illegal immigrants are crossing the country's border unlawfully, on top of it all they are damaging property of the Hungarian state."

Baltimore police and prosecutors struggle with witness cooperation
When it came time to bring to justice the men accused of killing his 1-year-old son, Rashaw Scott wanted nothing to do with the court proceedings.
After Scott refused to come to Baltimore Circuit Court in May, a judge issued a warrant for his arrest. Scott spent the night in jail, took the stand with his hands shackled and refused to answer many of the prosecutor's questions.
Scott never explained his reluctance to testify. But the case has come to symbolize the continuing challenge that Baltimore police and prosecutors face in getting witnesses — and even victims — to cooperate. Of the five defendants in the case, one man was convicted and the jury deadlocked on the other four.

Bloomberg: Fox News Couldn't Kill Trump's Momentum, Made Him Stronger
A few hours before Thursday’s Fox News debate, a friend of Donald Trump’s confided to me that Trump was nervous. Not about the competition — he could handle them. No, Trump worried about Fox News, and in particular, debate moderator Megyn Kelly. She’d been hammering him all week on her show, and he was certain she was out to get him.
He had canceled a Fox News appearance on Monday night, the friend said, in order to avoid her. (Trump’s spokeswoman wouldn’t confirm or deny this.)
It turns out Trump was right. His toughest opponents Thursday night weren’t the candidates up on stage, but the Fox News moderators, who went right after him — none with more gusto than Kelly.
Kelly went straight for the jugular. "You've called women you don't like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals," she admonished Trump. "Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president?"
But Trump saw her coming a mile away and cut her off. "Only Rosie O’Donnell," he barked, drawing cheers from the crowd.
When Kelly tried to point out that he had insulted more women than O’Donnell, Trump, as he would all night, steamrolled right past her. "The big problem this country has is being politically correct," Trump practically shouted, invoking conservatives’ favorite term of disdain. "I’ve been challenged by so many people and I don't frankly have time for total political correctness and to be honest with you this country doesn't have time either." The crowd went wild.

Worcester County picks $4.8M radio system
Preferring a turnkey rather than piecemeal structure and favoring ownership of the core system rather than an ongoing lease arrangement, the Worcester County Commissioners on Tuesday voted to spend $4.8 million on a new radio system with the Harris Corporation of Lynchburg, Va. rather than rival Motorola.
Local vendor Delmarva Two Way Radio’s bid was incomplete, in the county’s estimation, by failing to provide a 15-year operational cost, and therefore unable to be considered.
The Harris bid started with a lump sum of $4.8 million for equipment and associated costs. It allows access to six antenna sites, have a dedicated technician working from the county offices in Snow Hill, replacement radios would be new and the county would own the core, or brain, of the system.

Debate Question: 'Any Word From God?'
(CNSNews) - Near the end of the debate Thursday night, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly asked conservative Republican Sen. Ted Cruz if he'd had "any word from God."
Of the hundreds of questions that could have been asked, Kelly chose "an interesting closing question" for the candidates, suggested by a Facebook user, who said, 'I want to know if any of them have received a word from God on what they should do and take care of first.'
"Senator Cruz, start from you. Any word from God?" Kelly asked.

FBI: Yes, Our Probe Into Hillary's Email Scheme is a Criminal Investigation
With the media understandably focused on the hottest story in politics this week, Hillary Clinton's email troubles have continued to spiral. Lie after provable lie has been exposed over recent weeks, with Team Clinton deflecting, distorting and lashing out with each development. Their latest hobby horse has been flogging the New York Times for 'erroneously' reporting that the Inspectors General-referred federal investigation into Mrs. Clinton's unsecure email scheme is criminal in nature. The Times botched the story, the Clinton camp says, because (a) the probe isn't "criminal," and (b) it's not technically investigating her -- but rather her email arrangement. The latter point is a distinction without a meaningful difference. She ordered the secret server to be set up. She ordered it to be culled. Her inner circle destroyed evidence without supervision. And she's personally made demonstrably false claims about the entire imbroglio at every step. Earlier this week, the New York Post tossed cold water on the former point as well:
The FBI investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s unsecured email account is not just a fact-finding venture — it’s a criminal probe, sources told The Post on Wednesday. The feds are investigating to what extent Clinton relied on her home server and other private devices to send and store classified documents, according to a federal source with knowledge of the inquiry. “It’s definitely a criminal probe,” said the source. “I’m not sure why they’re not calling it a criminal probe. “The DOJ [Department of Justice] and FBI can conduct civil investigations in very limited circumstances,” but that’s not what this is, the source stressed. “In this case, a security violation would lead to criminal charges. Maybe DOJ is trying to protect her campaign.” Clinton’s camp has downplayed the inquiry as civil and fact-finding in nature. Clinton herself has said she is “confident” that she never knowingly sent or received anything that was classified.More
Scam Alert Involving Pets
Folks we need to pass along a warning. This has happened to many other lost and found pet sites but today is a first for us and sadly there are awful people out there attempting to extort money by playing on the sympathies of a distraught owner. Anyone can Google a person to get their contact info and unfortunately there are many scams of this nature out there. You already know that for years we have operated as a no-cost, volunteer community organization. No one has ever been charged for a single thing we have provided.
-
Today one of the owners of a pet received a call from the phone number 213-221-1099. The caller, a female with a foreign accent,
identified herself as Lost Pet PR and stated they had found his dog. This CLEARLY SCREAMS SCAM but in some circumstances and for someone holding out hope, such a tactic could lure in an unsuspecting victim.

Salisbury Fire Station 2, $4 Million Has Already Turned Into $6 Million
It's no wonder County Executive Bob Culver is refusing to pay for a Salisbury Fire Service. Why should the County taxpayers pay to fund all of these outlandish Fire Stations? I support Culver and if the City isn't careful the County will easily see they don't need the City and City taxpayers will lose over $2 million a year when the County walks away.
Tournament hauls in some 10K meals for locals in need
With a total prize purse in upwards of $3.8 million, the 2015 White Marlin Open is expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators to Ocean City during an already busy – and profitable – time of the year.
For the last six years, however, this rich event has also grown to serve a secondary purpose for struggling families on the Eastern Shore, providing 2,000 to 3,000 pounds of high protein food through the Maryland Food Bank.
“This event is really the only time we get protein fish donated,” Food Sourcing Manager Butch Langenfelder said. “The great thing about it is that product stays right here on the Eastern Shore.”
Langenfelder estimated 300 pounds of fillets were donated to the Food Bank on Monday, day one of the tournament, and distributed to Diakonia in West Ocean City. Other local groups should also receive donations this week.

Hunting advocate: Safaris essential to wildlife conservation
Tourist safari hunting is one of the founding supporters of wildlife and wild Africa today.
Wildlife today does not exist by accident or without real management effort. The hunting is a purposefully designed conservation strategy formed by experts to conserve game and habitat and benefit the local people who ultimately determine the survival of the habitat and game.
Hunting areas are far larger than other protected areas. Eliminate the hunting and you eliminate crucial wildlife habitat, particularly lion habitat and lion prey (essential food) — hence most lions.
The hunts are expensive because the hunting is used to fund most of the operating budgets of the wildlife departments and conservation infrastructure. That includes the funding of most anti-poaching. The law enforcement funding pays for community game guards, hunting operator anti-poaching teams and the rangers of the wildlife departments — all three.

Huckabee: Abortion Violates ‘Unborn Child’s 5th and 14th Amendment Rights
(CNSNews) - During Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate in Cleveland, Ohio, Chris Wallace of Fox News asked former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee a question based on Wallace’s premise that favoring constitutional amendments to ban same-sex marriage and abortion raise an “electability question” for Huckabee.
Huckabee countered that what he actually believes is that an unborn baby is a person from the moment of conception and that the next president should “invoke the Fifth and Fourteenth amendments” in protecting their right to due process of law and equal protection of the law.

Illegal Immigrant Sets Police Car on Fire, Declares "War" on America... But It Gets Worse
The Houston, Texas, area was terrorized Saturday by a 16-year-old illegal immigrant on a destructive criminal rampage as part of his own declaration of war against the United States.
The teenager’s rampage began when he set a patrol car on fire outside of the Precinct 4 building in Manvel, on the south side of the sprawling metropolis.
As officers began checking out the scene, they noticed a maroon Ford truck loitering suspiciously near the parking lot. When a deputy approached the truck to check it out, the teenager pointed a .22 caliber rifle out the window at him, forcing the officer to seek cover.
The illegal then took off, leading officers on a high-speed chase around Houston that lasted 35 minutes.
Things took an even worse turn when the illegal teen swerved into two police motorcycles escorting a funeral procession, damaging one of the bikes but causing no injuries.

Attorneys say prosecutors hid evidence in Freddie Gray case
BALTIMORE (AP) — Attorneys for the six police officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death say prosecutors steered investigators away from allegations about Gray’s behavior in past interactions with law enforcement. The attorneys claim detectives were told Gray had a history of participating in “crash-for-cash” schemes in which people hurt themselves to collect settlements — a piece of information attorneys say would be useful for their case.
Gray died on April 19, a week after suffering a critical spinal injury in the back of a police van. Gray’s death spurred days of largely peaceful protests followed by rioting and looting last April 27.
Six officers were charged with crimes ranging from misdemeanor assault to “depraved-heart” murder.
In a motion filed Thursday in Baltimore Circuit Court, defense attorneys allege that investigators for the Baltimore Police Department had information that Gray had a history of intentionally injuring himself in order to collect insurance money. The attorneys allege in the filing that police investigators knew that Gray once injured himself so severely while in a Baltimore jail that he required medical attention. The attorneys say in documents that when police investigators tried to follow up on the evidence, prosecutors in the state’s attorney’s office told them “not to do the defense attorneys’ jobs for them.”

Illegal immigrant Admits Murdering His Pizza Parlor Co-worker
An illegal immigrant from Mexico has admitted to strangling a 30-year-old New Jersey woman he worked with, and setting her body and house on fire to cover up the crime.
Juan Jimenez-Olivera, 30, pleaded guilty Wednesday to murder, aggravated arson, desecrating human remains, theft and related offenses in the slaying of Sviatlana Dranko, his co-worker at a pizzeria.
Jimenez-Olivera admitted in court to strangling Dranko in April 2014 in her Hillsborough home, stealing $6,000 and lying to police about his involvement before turning himself in two days later.
Prosecutors say he put a pillow case over Dranko's face and used a lighter to start the blaze.
In exchange for his guilty pleas, the state has agreed to drop a first-degree aggravated sexual assault charge and recommend a 30-year sentence without the possibility of parole on the murder count.
Jimenez-Olivera is in the country illegally and a judge says he could be deported.

The Going Rate For A 30-Second Super Bowl Commercial Spot Tops $5M
Even though last year’s slate of Super Bowl ads was largely regarded as ho-hum, and even though advertisers are increasingly subverting the “surprise!” effect of Super Bowl sunday commercials by relentlessly teasing their big-ticket spots online days in advance, the NFL’s big game is still TV’s biggest annual draw, and so the cost to be a part of it is going up again.
CNBC reports that CBS, which is airing the game this year, has sold advertising spots for as much as $5 million per 30-seconds of air time.

Redistricting reform: Hogan makes good on his promise
Gov. Larry Hogan took an important step toward fulfilling one of the most important promises of his campaign today by naming a commission to come up with recommendations to reform the process by which Maryland redraws congressional and legislative district maps. Granted, he made a lot of important promises, like boosting Maryland's economy and setting the state's taxation and fiscal policy on a permanently sustainable course. But this one stands out because his administration is in a position to deliver on a fundamental reform for the cause of good government in a way that might never have happened if he hadn't been elected.
Maryland's redistricting process is dominated by the governor, and for the last several decades, that has meant, for all practical purposes, that the lines have been drawn by a small group of Democratic insiders in a way that benefits the Democratic Party. After the 2000 census, then-Gov. Parris Glendening redrew the lines to shift Maryland's House of Representatives delegation from a 4-4 split between the parties to a 6-2 advantage for the Democrats. After the 2010 census, then Gov. Martin O'Malley's redistricting set the stage for Democrats to take seven of the eight seats. So long as Democrats were firmly in control of both the governor's seat and the legislature, there was no reason for anyone to listen to the complaints from good government types about contorted district lines. Allowing politicians to choose their voters rather than the other way around suited the powers-that-be just fine.
But with Governor Hogan, Democrats must face the legitimate possibility that a Republican could still be in control come 2021 — and that he could do unto Democrats what Democrats have done unto Republicans. Mr. Hogan's Democratic opponent, Anthony Brown, also promised redistricting reform, but had he been elected, Democrats in the legislature wouldn't necessarily have cooperated even if he had followed through. But with Mr. Hogan in charge, they have every incentive to pursue real reform.

But with Mr. Hogan in charge, they have every incentive to pursue real reform.

Verizon will drop phone contracts, end discounted phones
NEW YORK (AP) — Verizon, the nation’s largest wireless provider, will stop offering phones at discounted prices when customers sign two-year service contracts.
The move was made in the name of simplification, but it could result in some customers paying more.
All wireless carriers have been trying to wean customers off subsidies, in which a $649 iPhone 6 goes for $200 with a two-year contract. Instead, carriers have been encouraging people to buy phones outright by paying the full retail price in monthly installments. A few carriers, namely Sprint, also offer leasing options for a lower monthly fee, but the customer doesn’t get to keep and resell the phone without additional payments. Verizon is the second national carrier, after T-Mobile, to end subsidies entirely for new customers.

Is Trump The Democrat ‘Wolf’ In GOP Clothing?
Trump has also donated to Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaigns and to the Clinton Foundation
When we earlier noted the change of course for the GOP as RNC Chair Riebus showed Donald Trump much love, we wondered why the sudden shift of attitude and comment on being a Republican nominee? Well, perhaps, just perhaps, there is a reason why Republican leadership is vying for Trump’s ‘support’… As WaPo reports, former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump as he neared a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men. While there are no specifics about the call, we are reminded that Trump has also donated to Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaigns and to the Clinton Foundation.

Demolition Of Old Feed Mill Underway In Berlin
BERLIN – Demolition of the long defunct feed mill at Perdue’s Berlin facility is currently underway.
The feed mill on Bryan Avenue, which has been closed since 2006, is being torn down, according to Perdue officials.
“We just decided to demolish it before it deteriorated any further,” said Perdue spokesperson Julie DeYoung.
DeYoung said the facility would continue to serve as a grain receiving and storage location for Perdue Agribusiness. Farmers bring their grain there and Perdue distributes it.
“That will continue to operate,” DeYoung said.

Again! Houston Pastors Go To Court To Enforce City Charter
Say lesbian mayor's language on transgender ballot issue manipulative
Houston’s lesbian mayor, who once subpoenaed the sermons of local pastors in her fight for a transgender ordinance, apparently isn’t giving up, even though the state Supreme Court recently slapped down her arguments.
Pastors and other members of the city’s No Unequal Rights coalition said Friday they are returning to court against Annise Parker, who was found to be in violation of the city’s charter, with a claim she’s violating the city charter, again, in how she’s chosen to describe that ordinance to residents in the coming election.
Coalition attorney Andy Taylor confirmed an Emergency Motion for Expedited Relief is being filed with the Texas Supreme Court “to seek a mandamus ordering the mayor and city council to submit ballot language for her ‘Equal Rights Ordinance’ that conforms with the city charter.”

The wording adopted by the city for the November election regarding the proposed ordinance that would allow men who describe themselves as women to use women’s facilities in public locations like locker rooms and recreation centers, and vice versa, provides that a vote “in favor” would be to repeal.

Undercover Cops Attack Innocent Woman, Shoot Good Samaritan Who Tried to Save Her
It’s hard enough to tell if a cop is going to rob, injure or kill you these days when they are in uniform, but when they’re dressed in hoodies and approaching people in the dead of night it becomes impossible. On July 30, local media reported that a man was shot by an undercover deputy in suburban Lake Worth and critically injured, nearly dying at the hospital.
The incident happened over an alleged drug deal that quickly turned to chaos before John Valderrama was shot in the leg in “self-defense,” according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s report. However, two sources inside the sheriff’s office have provided information to Jose Lambiet that suggests the three unarmed civilians were victims of poor police logic and excessive force. It seems that Valderrama was shot for trying to help someone whom he thought was being attacked.
Below is the original news report, in which it was immediately assumed that these cops were attacked for doing their jobs. However, as you will read below, that is not the case.
None of the three—John Valderrama, Richard Roll and Regina Betts—have been charged with a crime, and it is unlikely this will happen, according to the sources. The undercover deputies were identified as John Bango and Tom Kabis, who have a history of screwing up. In 2007, they arrested the wrong guy for alleged drug dealing, who wrongfully served eight months before being released.

Toxic sludge turns river in Colorado orange
DURANGO, Colo. -- You can forgive folks in southern Colorado who might have a jaundiced view of government projects after what happened this week.
Crews working for the Environmental Protection Agency were trying to clean up an old mine. But they accidentally sent a million gallons of toxic sludge into the Animas River.
The images from the ground and from the sky of an orange river have Durango residents like Joe Genualdi worried.

Virginia Bans Confederate Flag Plates, But Not Planned Parenthood Plates
State continues to sell "pro-choice" license plates which fund Planned Parenthood
Virginia has banned specialty license plates featuring the Confederate flag but will continue to sell “pro-choice” license plates which fund Planned Parenthood.
The state had previously issued around 1,700 Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates with an image of the Confederate battle flag, but now Virginia is replacing them with plates with a flagless design.
“The affected motorists will be sent new Sons of Confederate Veterans tags along with a letter telling them they have 30 days before the old plate is invalid…,” The Virginian-Pilot reported. “However, the replacement tag doesn’t exist yet.”
“The Dept. of Motor Vehicles will work with the heritage group to come up with a new flagless plate design, [DMV spokesperson] Brubaker said, then the plate has to be manufactured and sent to holders of the specialty plate.”
Virginia, however, will continue to sell pro-abortion “Trust Women, Respect Choice” Planned Parenthood license plates, the proceeds of which help fund the organization, despite the shocking undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood discussing the sale of aborted baby parts for profit.

Hillary Clinton, Top Aides Ignore Court Request
(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced that on Friday the State Department provided a status reportas required by a July 31 federal court order requiring the State Department to request that Hillary Clinton and her top State Department aides Human Abedin and Cheryl Mills confirm, under penalty of perjury, that they have produced all government records in their possession, return any other government records immediately, and describe their use of Hillary Clinton’s email server to conduct government business.
The State Department filing shows that the agency sent the former officials the request and a copy of Judge Sullivan’s order but that both Mills and Abedin, who responded through their attorneys, ignored Judge Sullivan’s request to submit information under penalty of perjury.
The State Department reports that Mrs. Clinton has yet to respond. Contrary to both Judge Sullivan’s order and the State Department’s request, Ms. Mills’ attorney said that she told Ms. Mills to destroy federal records in her possession on Monday, August 10.
Judicial Watch filed an urgent response informing Judge Sullivan of this plan to destroy federal records.
The State Department produced the August 5 letter it sent to Mrs. Clinton, which included a copy of Judge Sullivan’s order.

HISTORICAL COMMENTS BY GEORGE CHEVALLIER 8-8-15
Oystering
Over the years many a man has made his living from the waters west ofWicomico County by tonging up from depths from 10 to 20 feet the elusive bivalve known as the oyster. Through over fishing and the devastating effects of the diseases MSX and Dermo, there are but a few who even bother to go tonging anymore.
When tonging was a way to make a decent living, the oyster boats would be three deep at the dock of H. B. Kennerly Co. in Nanticoke waiting to unload their day’s catch. The state-imposed limit was 25 bushels and the better tongers would often have two of three bushels carried over to be counted on the next day’s tally.
The Nanticoke River is divided up by the state in parcels and leased to various individuals. A lease-holder will stake out their acreage and they were the only one allowed to tong them. Poaching onto another man’s grounds was common practice and the locals could become quite contentious about it. The state does maintain some oyster ground and anyone can tong on it.
Oysters have to adhere to something hard to grow to their legal size of three inches. Since the bottom of the Nanticoke is mostly sand, the Kennerly Company used to save all the shells from our shucking operation and “plant” them every spring. The way they did this was to load them on a flat barge and go to where they were to be put over. They then turned a large hose on them and they went flying everywhere. It was a sight to see.
Oystering is like farming. It gets in a man’s soul and the pursuit of the tasty bivalve drives him to do things that an ordinary man would shirk. Some of the more ardent tongers would take their Privateer boat and skim it over the ice to get in the river when their regular 40-43 foot boat was frozen in the harbor. They might only get four or five bushels, but they figured it was more than they would have had if they had not gone out.
An oysterman is very resourceful. The small keg pictured above is a waterman’s thermos. Since the brackish water of the Nanticoke is not fit to drink, he had to carry fresh water with him. This one is about 100 years old. The last of the tongers carried an ice chest filled with their favorite beverage along with their lunch.
As recently as the 1980’s, a Mr. Pruitt, who was in his 80’s, was out tonging one day when his motor quit. Mr. Pruitt proceeded to pull the piece of carpet he had on the deck for better footing, cut two slits in it with his ever ready pocket knife and run the shafts of his tongs through these holes. He then sailed himself safely back to Nanticoke harbor. He was not only a true waterman for going after oysters but he proved himself a capable sailor.
One day, it was particularly nasty weather-wise. Occasionally a tourist would grace our premises with the thought of “making our day” by spending a few bucks. Now, we were a $25 million dollar business and looked on the cash customer as more of an annoyance than a god-send. One of the tongers came in the office to cash in on his days’ catch. He looked plenty the worse for wear. I remarked to him that it must have been pretty bad out there. The lady said that he was a waterman and was used to it. He told her in no uncertain terms, “Lady, you never get used to being cold and wet.” And that was that!
Mayor Believes New Street Performers’ Regs Working
OCEAN CITY – Mayor Rick Meehan addressed the Boardwalk performers’ protest last week during a code amendment discussion on performers and municipal infractions.
On Monday evening, an ordinance adding the recently implemented street performing regulations to the City Code’s section for municipal infractions, while also revising the list of personnel authorized to issue citations, came before the Mayor and City Council on first reading for approval.
The code currently states, “Any person, partnership, corporation, unincorporated association, or other business entity who shall be deemed to have committed a ‘municipal infraction’ shall be issued a citation for such violation and/or noncompliance … the following listed officials are authorized by the Mayor and City Council to issue citations to violators: police officers, Cadets, Animal Control Officers, the Fire Marshal, members of the fire prevention commissions, fire investigators and fire inspectors, members of the beach patrol, building officials, planning and zoning administrators, licensing investigators and licensing inspectors, city engineers and assistants.”

Bloomberg: Fox Attacks Made Donald Trump Stronger
Kelly, the whip-smart queen of Fox News' blonde stunners, went straight for the jugular.

A Comment Worthy Of A Post on "Rumors & Lies Part III"
Last week a long-time friend of ours was attacked over the condition of 2 of her horses. I too was disturbed by the pictures. Pictures that I might add were posted and shared by her on social media.
After reading some of the comments on face book and in one of the local papers I became even more concerned about why these horses were in this condition. I was also concerned that something just didn’t add up.
Now I know a picture is worth a thousand words…..but are those words the truth or just my perception of what I thought. Instead of putting in my two cents I took a ride down to our friend’s house and visited her, her family & her horses. After our visit I was even more disappointed at how our horse community treated this family and this issue.
Like many of you, I have known this family for years now. I have worked for them, laughed with them and shared holidays with them. We love this family. They have supported many of the local events in our area & let those who have no horse ride/use one or more of theirs. When the “big red bus” came to town with horses, kids (and entry fees, I might add), we knew the event took a closer step to being a success. It was a joy to see them.
These two horses that we were all concerned about were a part of the family’s herd, a herd I might add that is not nearly as large as was stated by some. They do not own 30 some horses. But, if they did, it’s none of my business. After seeing the herd, (and yes they are located in 2 different locations, but not to hide them as insinuated), I noticed how fat most of their horses are. There are a couple that are thinner, but one is and old man and the other has soundness issues that I feel do not need to be compounded by being overweight. Neither are in any danger of being starved to death.
When the topic of the two horses that were the subject of this family’s ridicule came up I saw things in a much different light. The medical condition of these 2 horses - one had a broken rib that punctured a lung and was put down not by the Humane Society as stated, but by the vet and family when it was taken for a second opinion because the first vet couldn’t tell them why their horse was suffering. The 2nd horse is going through detoxification of a drug that was used during his racing career. Now I’m not a vet, but some of my studies have included the effects of some drugs and the withdrawal these effects have, can be devastating to internal organs and therefore the horse as a whole deteriorates.
Before this gets too long I would like to ask some questions. Why would they post the original pictures on a public forum if they were starving them? Why would they pick those 2 horses to starve out of all the horses they have? Both were very well bred, were not cheap and many miles were traveled to obtain them.
Why hasn’t the humane society stepped in? I see some of you have hinted of a conspiracy because of where the owner works. I have worked with SPCA doing hoof care for confiscated horses and I myself have called them when I’ve seen what I felt was abuse. They have always taken action. Just because they didn’t do what I felt should’ve been done didn’t mean that I went public smearing an organization that’s very purpose is to help animals.
This is getting long even though I would like to say much more.

Influential Democratic Senator Says He Will Vote Against Iran Nuclear Deal
Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, who is in line to be Democratic leader when Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada steps down next year, says he will vote against the president's nuclear control deal with Iran.
In a post on Medium, Schumer says after "considerable soul-searching," he has decided he can't support the agreement.
Schumer says among his reservations about the deal is that it does not allow for inspections of Iranian nuclear facilities at any time. He adds:
"Even more troubling is the fact that the U.S. cannot demand inspections unilaterally. By requiring the majority of the 8-member Joint Commission, and assuming that China, Russia, and Iran will not cooperate, inspections would require the votes of all three European members of the P5+1 as well as the EU representative. It is reasonable to fear that, once the Europeans become entangled in lucrative economic relations with Iran, they may well be inclined not to rock the boat by voting to allow inspections."

The Super Common Oil That Science Now Shows Is Worse Than Sugar
If you think that sugar is the unhealthiest thing you can eat, you're wrong. Apparently, the Worst Food on the Planet Award should actually go to soybean oil, suggests new findings published in the journal PLoS One.
Setting up a sort of dietary cage match, researchers fed mice a series of diets each containing 40% fat. The fat in the first diet was primarily saturated and came from coconut oil, while the fat in the second diet was primarily unsaturated and came mostly from soybean oil. The researchers also fed mice two altered versions of the high-fat diets that also contained fructose.
The assumption was that the fructose-eating mice would pack on the most fat and develop the worst insulin resistance. But that's not what happened. Instead, the mice who ate the soybean oil diet without fructose gained the most weight—9% more than the fructose-eating mice and a whopping 25% more than the mice who got their fat from coconut oil. Compared to their fructose-eating counterparts, the mice on the soybean oil diet also had fattier livers and more insulin resistance—both signs of impending diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
"That was a surprise, given that most people think that unsaturated fatty acids [like those found in soybean oil] are supposed to be healthy," says lead study author Poonamjot Deol, Ph.D., a cell biologist at the University of California, Riverside. They're also everywhere. A full half of all the vegetable oil produced in the world is soybean oil. And since it's cheap, the stuff is used in endless packaged foods. It's also a favorite at restaurants—many of which tout the fact that they use soybean oil right on their menus because it's perceived as healthy.
Deol and her colleagues aren't totally sure what makes soybean oil so horrible, but they guess that it could have something to do with the way the stuff influences genes that determine how the liver metabolizes fat. And other processed vegetable oils might not be much better. "We've actually tested corn oil, and we found that it was also causing more obesity than coconut oil, but not as much as soybean oil. We haven't tested canola yet," she says.

One of two men charged in connection with last month's home invasion, rape and fatal bludgeoning of a 64-year-old California woman was in the U.S. illegally and on probation, the News-Press has learned.
Victor Aureliano Martinez Ramirez, 29, who is charged along with Jose Fernando Villagomez, 20, in the July 24 attack in Santa Maria, Calif., was on probation for committing battery against an unidentified woman on May 22, 2014, while in possession of methamphetamine. He was charged twice this year for violating probation, once for possessing a concealed knife and the other for drugs, but a Santa Barbara judge allowed him to enter a substance abuse center in Santa Maria in lieu of jail. According to County Jail officials, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to issue an immigration detainer that would have required local authorities to hold him for deportation.
Police say Marilyn Pharis was beaten with a hammer and sexually assaulted in the morning attack, and died later at a local hospital. An autopsy was set for Thursday.
